Superintendent’s Message to the Community

Jon A. Felske,SuperintendentMuskegon PublicSchools

A small, energetic group of Muskegon High School students have spent hours after school and at weekend competitions learning numerous skills which could land them college scholarships and pave the way for future careers. They are the first-ever Robotics Club members.

The club’s advisor, Bill Goericke, loved to tinker with mechanical things as a kid. When the club opportunity arose, he jumped on board. With initial funding from FIRST Robotics Corporation (FRC), a corporation-funded charitable

organization, members designed, built, programmed and tested their robot to enter the “Recycle Rush” state-wide competition in January. Robots had to pick up and stack plastic, lidded storage containers within time parameters and compete against the robots of 39 other teams. Teams had “pit crews”, banners and tools; the excitement Goericke likened to NASCAR competition.

Club members used team-building strategies, physics and engineering principles, and learned to think

Muskegon Public Schools has a long history of supporting and providing educational opportunities to tens of thousands of students who have graduated from Muskegon Public Schools over the past hundred plus years.

On Tuesday, August 4, 2015, the Muskegon Public Schools District community will be asked to support a Sinking Fund Request which would generate an estimated $750,000 a year for the next ten years starting in January of 2016. The purpose of this request is to address district wide facilities needs including resurfacing parking lots, auditorium renovations,

bathroom remodeling, plaster repairs, playground equipment purchases and athletic field upgrades. The total tax increase requested to generate $7,500,000 will cost a district resident of a $100,000 market value home $50 per year over the next ten years.

Your support will allow Muskegon Public Schools to continue to provide the needed attention to all of our facilities and will positively affect the learning environment for every student for the next generation.

Thank you Muskegon Public School Community for your unwavering support of our students, staff and programs through the years. For additional information or questions, please call my office at 720-2001 or visit our website at www.muskegonpublicschools.org

outside the box. “Getting kids started with engineering concepts and to think about how technology can solve everyday problems is the key,” Goericke stated. MHS sophomore and team captain, Marcus Cole summed up his experience: “One of the things I learned was that there is a big future in robotics. There are so many careers that are opening up. This is a career future that I think I may pursue.”

She’s Valedictorian – number one in the Muskegon High School (MHS) Class of 2015. Soft-spoken Tia Burton has a simple but powerful motto: “Lead by example”. And she has lived up to it thus far.

Tia’s accomplishments are impressive, but she has had to work hard, stay focused and rise above many of life’s challenges at a young age. She was the victim of bullying which caused her to withdraw and lack friends at an early age. Also, she lost her dad to cancer when she was a freshman. But she had the support, strength

and encouragement from her mom, Yvette Burton, and grandmother, Eleanore Harris, who Tia “loves to death. She’s my hero.” Harris has become a successful, local businesswoman who owns Steve’s

Foxy Boutique which is located next to the Muskegon Heights Post Office. She is her granddaughter Tia’s role model.

“It takes determination to meet goals…” words taken from Tia’s Commencement Address. Her determination to succeed began with her 9th grade softball coach, Laurie Bishop, who “believed” in Tia. “Softball, the game and Coach Bishop and Varsity Coach Kimberly Woods, helped bring me out of my quiet zone,” Tia recalls. It’s where she first made lasting high school friendships and where those changes gave her the motivation to succeed in future life and academic decisions.

Tia set high academic goals for herself and her 4.25 GPA speaks to her success. In her senior year she took five Advance Placement Exams: Spanish, English & Composition, Calculus, Physics and Government/Politics, which, when passed, will earn her college credit. In addition to a rigorous class schedule throughout her high school career, Tia was also a member of the National Honor Society, a cheerleader, Varsity Softball 3rd base player, an Upward Bound member, and she volunteered at the Muskegon Heights Police Department,

Mission for Area People Supper House, Rescue Mission Thanksgiving Dinner and ran with Nelson Elementary’s Girls on the Run team on May 16.

“There will be some days that you will make mistakes and struggle to recover, but you have done great things thus far. This day, among many more, proves that you can attain anything you set your mind to,” Tia told the Class of 2015. And she has shown them what accomplishing great things have brought her. She received scholarships totaling over $93,000 including full tuition to University of Michigan for four years to study Bio-Molecular Sciences. Her career goal is to become an Oncologist. Plus, she was awarded the Muskegon High School Academic Cup on which her name is engraved and makes her a part of MHS history and tradition of excellence. She also promised to Facebook post the selfie with her Class and caption it, “Once a Big Red, always a Big Red!”

Tia looks forward to meeting new people and starting the next phase of her life on U of M’s campus this summer, taking her advice to heart: “Take a deep breath and keep moving forward.”

Against All Odds By Marti Johnson

It’s More Than Just RunningBy Marti Johnson

The odds of graduating with his Class of 2015 were not in Colton Parker’s favor when he entered the credit recovery program at the Muskegon Community Education Center (MCEC) last fall. According to counselor Tom Ellis, Colton was not only behind in credits, but his attendance had been poor since midway through his sophomore year. Even enrolling in a cyber academy didn’t work. However, Ellis laid out a plan using the Michigan Merit Curriculum which “changed Colton’s graduation outlook from requiring an extra semester of school

to graduating on time. Colton also had the opportunity to attend the Muskegon Area Career Tech Center (MACTC),” Ellis continued, “an option not feasible without MCEC’s credit recovery program.”

Allied Health Technology at MACTC caught Colton’s interest, and with teacher Kathy VanTil’s guidance and instruction, Colton chose Athletic Training as his focus career. He joined HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) whose competition components were integrated into the curriculum and began preparing

for competition. Colton scored high enough in Regionals to attend State competition in Traverse City.

“Colton has a bright future ahead of him,” VanTil elaborated. “While experiencing challenges and obstacles, he used his MACTC class and HOSA membership to polish the skills he will need in his future health care job.”

Colton plans to pursue his Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing degree.

The girls ran. They ran 5K (or 3.1 miles). Girls from Muskegon Middle (MMS), Lakeside and Nelson Elementary schools joined hundreds of other third through eighth graders from schools throughout the County on May 16th to participate in the Girls OnThe Run (GOTR) Celebration 5K. GOTR is an international program which “inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experienced-based curriculum which creatively integrates running…to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness”. With the support of several

sponsors, Every Woman’s Place hosts this program each year to encourage physical, mental and emotional health.

The MMS team, Girls On Track, was sponsored for the seventh year by Hackley Community Care Wellness Program and located at the middle school. Their 10-week training began in early March and included two

meetings per week. Joy Evans, School Wellness Program Coordinator, explained how “the curriculum allows for more mature processing around certain topics including eating disorders, internet safety, relationships, cyber-bullying, tobacco & alcohol use. Since this year’s MMS group was smaller,” Evans stated, “we chose to invest in the quality of the interactions not just the number of participants.”

It’s fun to run! Encourage your daughter to join one of next year’s teams.

We believe that every girl

can embrace who she is,

can define who she wants to be,

can rise to any challenge,

can change the world.

Can.
