White Tailed DeerWhite Tailed Deer Chosen as the State Game Mammal in 1997 by a

group of Zeeland 4th graders Found in every county in Michigan

An important natural and economic resource A buck grows new antlers each year.

White-tailed deer can run at 35 mph for short distances and for 25 mph over longer distances. The deer’s winter coat provides such good insulation that snow will stay on a deer’s back without melting for extended periods of time. Deer can eat 5-9 pounds of food per day.

Deer have a keen sense of smell and hearing. Part of the white-tailed deer’s diet is often poison

ivy.
