3. How can the iPhone help?
3 Case Studies

Personalised Learning Environment (PLE)
4. Mobile Video Sharing
Group of students studying Nursing
Part of course is a placement at regional hospitals
Each student has a different experience on placement
This means witnessing different operations and procedures
So, the overall experience of the class is rich, but the experience of individual students will vary
How can we ensure a rich experience for every student?
5. Mobile Video Sharing
Placement A
Placement B
Placement C
6. Geo-Sensitive Learning Objects
Group of students studying Geology
Part of the course is a fieldtrip to the beach
Students do not seem to get much out of the fieldtrip:
It is difficult to make useful notes on the beach;
It is hard to take books down to the beach;
It is hard to give a lecture on the beach (being heard etc.);
It is hard to spend quality time with each student;
How can we improve the learning process?
7. Geo-Sensitive Learning Objects
An App is created with maps, markers and links to further resources
When the student steps into the GPS hot zone, further information and multimedia learning objects pop up
These learning objects could be animations, videos, audio, quizzes, images or text
Students can self-guide around the fieldtrip
Learning is experiential
Lecturer has time for focussed questions
8. Personalised Learning Environment
I am a student doing an undergraduate degree in Philosophy
I can access lecture notes and discussions on my iPhone
I get internet access on my iPhone
I can record the lectures with my iPhone
I have RSS feeds from variety of journals
I can download other Apps
Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy
Wikipaedia
TED talks...
I can search iTunes U for other Philosophy podcasts
I can read e-books
I can connect with others on the course e.g. Facebook, Twitter
I can keep all this information in the palm of my hand
