Theheliumcorecontractsandheatsup;hydrogenburninghappensinashellaroundthecoreatafuriouspace.Thestarbecomesluminousandswellsup,becomingaredgiant.
Whenthecorecontractsandheatsenoughtobeginfusingheliumintocarbonandoxygen,thatenergyreleaseexpandsthecore,reducingthenuclearreactionratesandcausingthestartoevolveofftheRGBandontothehorizontalbranch.
TheRGB“Tip”isthebrightestluminosityaRGBstarcanattaininitsevolution.Ifagalaxyiscloseenoughforustoseeindividualstars,wecanuseTRGBtogetadistance.
