INVOCATION
M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
A: Amen.
CONFESSION OF SINS
M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him
in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.
A: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my
thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve
your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior
Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for
our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name
of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
A: Amen.
THE PRAYER OF THE DAY
M: Let us pray.
The minister offers the Prayer of the Day.

THE READING OF GOD’S WORD
FIRST LESSON: 1 Samuel 17:1-11, 34-37, 45-50
Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war and assembled at Sokoh in Judah. They pitched camp at Ephes
Dammim, between Sokoh and Azekah. 2 Saul and the Israelites assembled and camped in the Valley of Elah and
drew up their battle line to meet the Philistines. 3 The Philistines occupied one hill and the Israelites another,
with the valley between them. 4 A champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine
camp. His height was six cubits and a span. 5 He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armor
of bronze weighing five thousand shekels; 6 on his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin was slung
on his back. 7 His spear shaft was like a weaver’s rod, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels.[c] His
shield bearer went ahead of him. 8 Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and
line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come
down to me. 9 If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill
him, you will become our subjects and serve us.” 10 Then the Philistine said, “This day I defy the armies of
Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other.” 11 On hearing the Philistine’s words, Saul and all the
Israelites were dismayed and terrified….34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s
sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued
the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has
killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied
the armies of the living God. 37 The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will
rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you.”…. 45 David said
to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of
the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you
into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the
Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the
Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” 48 As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran
quickly toward the battle line to meet him. 49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck
the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground. 50 So David
triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine
and killed him.
SECOND LESSON: Romans 8:28-39
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called
according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his
Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called;
those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. 31 What, then, shall we say in response to
these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for
us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against
those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ
Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for
us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or
nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered
as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future,
nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the
love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

THE NICENE CREED
A: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is,
seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and became fully human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

MESSAGE:
“Because Jesus Lives: I Am Not Overwhelmed”
based on John 6:1-13
John 6:1-13
Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a
great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then
Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near. 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy
bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to
do. 7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to
have a bite!” 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five
small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the
people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were
there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they
wanted. He did the same with the fish. 12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather
the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the
pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
