THE MERCILESS DUO Article 72 of our good old Constitution must have

imagined that fellows like me sitting in the RashtrapathiBhavan, charged with love for mankind, binning the mererantings of the fly-by-night Home Minister who lovesblood. 6 ropes in 6 months is a rush job in terms of produce, but throws this magnificent land of spiritual heritage ontop of crass Hitlerism, Stalinism and the coping stone onthe tomb of Humanism, fashioned by the great Demo-cratic warrior of World War II fame Harry Truman who, sitting in his posh White House, threw a ‘Little Boy’ onHiroshima and a ‘Fat Boy’ on Nagasaki, killing a measly2,50,000 Japanese, justifying it by the international codewhich proclaims that all is fair in love and warfare.

That code begs the question Are we at war now?Well, the shiny pated Shinde, the most successful Home

Minister, presides over the destines of the condemnedprisoners, secure in the knowledge that Pranab is havinga whale of a time in Rashtrapathi Bhavan. The duo haveboosted the production and sale of fhe Manila rope, whichis a superior product, unlike the one used for hanging thehalf-brother of Saddam Hussain - Barzan Hassan - inIraq, which snapped while decapitating him. It might bethat the act was not accidental but a barbarous facet ofunfairness in war.

Well, are the aforesaid duo at war with the seeker ofmercy? I can picture B.R.Ambedkar tearing his hair at theassumption of the duo that Article 72 got slipped inunnoticed when he was presiding over the tenuous job offraming this mercy provision. Some more mercy seekersare in the queue before the deadly duo, who have provedbeyond doubt that Article 72 is a constitutional aberra-tion. At least the Supreme Court can now intervene and,in all cases of capital sentences, reduce the punishmentto life sentence since mercy is in short supply in thepolitical labyrinth.

Sir, I am resident of Sowbagya Colony. There are a numberof apartments in our block. About 9 days back, a huge pitwas dug in front of our apartment in Block 96 by ElectricityDepartment to rectify a fault in the power cable whichcaused a blackout in the apartment six blocks away.

The pit has completely blocked our access to the road. Nointimation was given to the six residents of our block aboutthe plan and duration of repair work.

We are unable to move out our vehicles, which is causinga lot of discomfort.

Careless digging using a JCB machine has resulted indamage to the sewage chamber, BSNL cable and street lightconnections.

Even though the work has been completed, the pit has notbeen refilled, blocking our access to the road. I request the EBofficials to take immediate action and close the pit properly.– T. G. Parthasarathy, Block 96, Sowbagya Colony,Anna Main Road, K. K. Nagar, Ph: 97909 49940

Pit dug by EB workers causes hardship to residents

Stray dogs threaten street residentsSir, I am a resident of Brindavan Street (West Mambalam).

There is a severe street dog menace on our street and itsbylanes. They have recently proliferated in great numbers. Many of them are unfriendly and often chase pedestrians andvehicles. Residents, especially children and senior citizens, are at a high risk of getting bit and getting infected by rabies. With the increasing summer heat, they often venture intothe compounds of residents for shade. We have appealed toChennai Corporation to catch and take them away, but noaction has been taken so far. We through Mambalam Times, request the concerned authorities to take immediate actionand rid our streets of the dog menace. — Y. SampathKumar, 68/38, Brindavan Street, West Mambalam, Ph:2472 9249

Chaos at NPR enrolment camp in Ward 127Sir, It appears that getting NPR based UID number

for senior citizens is near impossible. In Ward 127, thebooth setup at Corporation Office (next to Shiva Vishutemple) is totally disorganized.

Persons like me with valid NPR token issued at thetime of census in 2010 are sidelined and only persons withtoken issued by the booth staff are being enrolled.

For the past three days, I have stood in vain in thequeue from 9 am onwards.

Family members of the persons who have been issuedtokens in the booth come in batches and are sent aheadand persons like me with token issued during census arepushed back.

A separate senior citizen’s desk was started yester-day morning but was abandoned midway.

I suggest let there be two separate queues and booths, one for persons already having NPR token and the otherfor those issued by the booth staff. There should be aseparate counter for senior citizens and the disabled.

I appeal to the concerned authorities to take propermeasures to make it easier for citizens in processing theNPR formalities.—M. D. Rajendran, Ayappa Flats,15 Rangan Street, T. Nagar.

Raised manhole causes fatal accidentSir, I am a resident of Ashok Nagar. There is a raised

manhole near Pudur High School bus stop which posesa risk to road users.

On April 29, a biker lost control of his vehicle afterbumping on the manhole and hit an old man walkingalongside.

The old man later succumbed to his injuries.I request the concerned authorities to take immediate

action and flatten the manhole to road height to preventany further such accidents. – S. Vinoaj, Ashok Nagar.
