Offering Ourselves To God

This year our church is celebrating its 60th An-niversary. We remember and thank God for the blessings He has bestowed

on our beloved Holy Apostles Church. The Twelve Holy Apostles is our theme for the year. At the conclusion of each Divine Liturgy, we commemorate these Saints. We remember the Synaxis (or gathering) of the 12 Apostles. Although we hear this phrase many times, do we understand who these people were? What did they do? Simon Peter is the first apostle men-tioned in the Bible. We remember Peter’s denial of Christ during Holy Week. Petros (Peter) is a Greek name meaning rock. Jesus gave him that name because he was the rock or foundation of the church. Peter was the leader of the group. He was the first person to publicly proclaim, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:16) Later, in the Book of Acts, he preached a very spirited mes-sage and 3,000 people were converted to Christ. He did not have Paul’s scholarly resume or Luke’s writing skills. He made mistakes just like us. We don’t need a long list of academic achievements to serve the Lord. It is not about our ability but rather our availability to serve God. Peter made himself available! Peter’s brother, Andrew, is the “first-called” apostle. With mixed emotions, we bid farewell to our beloved Fr. Panayiotis, Presvytera Nikolia and their children as they leave us to serve at the St. Demetrios Church of Chicago. During his two years at Holy Apostles, we witnessed Fr. Panayiotis’ journey from the laity through the deaconate to the priesthood, becoming the energetic and loving priest whom we cherish. We thank him for his ministry to our parish and offer prayers for abundant blessings as he continues his service in Christ’s vineyard.

different ways. We can bring our friends and relatives to the Lord and the Church. The next two apostles, James and John of Zebedee, were called “sons of thun-der.” (Mark 3:17) They were bold and impetuous. There was nothing slight or gentlemanly about them! They worked the night shift on boats, throwing out nets and cranking them in by hand. These fishermen had no compass, electric lights, glass windows, motor, radar, or fish-finder. John wrote the Gospel of John, three Epis-tles, and the Book of Revelation. He was one of three who were with the Lord at the raising of Jairus’ daughter, at the Mount of Transfiguration, and in Gethsemane. He refers to himself as the disciple whom Je-sus loved and as the “other disciple.” John was later banished to Patmos where he wrote the Book of Revelation. Even though these brothers were not perfect and often

acted rashly, they served the Lord dili-gently with deep love. The apostle Phillip is best remembered for misunderstanding the Lord’s divinity. He viewed Christ as a wonderful human being, but he was not fully aware of Christ’s divinity. So, the Lord taught him. Jesus wanted to miraculously feed 5,000 people with five loaves and two fish. He tested Phillip by asking him where they should buy the bread. Phillip indi-cated that even lots of money could not buy enough bread to feed all these people. Then he and the other disciples told Jesus to send the crowds away because they did not have enough food. Jesus’ divinity mul-tiplied the loaves to feed all those people. Phillip finally understood Christ’s divinity. This apostle’s life reminds all of us that we are constantly learning and growing. We do not have all the answers about God. ...See Fr. Nicholas P. 6

Welcome to the Tsikalas Family

We are very excited to welcome John and Kahlee Tsikalas to the Holy Apostles family. They will soon be moving from Boston to Westchester to join our community. On June 1, John will begin as our Associate Pastor. John has completed his final year of the seminary at Holy Cross School of Theology in Boston. Originally from St. Louis, Mis-souri, he felt the call to serve his faith from a young age, yet wanted to confirm that it was the right decision. John first attended the University of Missouri where he studied Political Science, Psychology and Spanish. John is quite thankful that he decided to at-tend Mizzou as it led him to his wife, Kahlee. During his three summers in college, John volunteered at Project Mexico & St. Inno-cent Orphanage, an Orthodox Christian run orphanage and philanthropic organization. It was partially due to his mission experi-ences in Mexico that John firmly decided to pursue the holy priesthood. His role models from throughout the Archdiocese and other Orthodox jurisdictions further inspired him to follow the calling and he enrolled at Holy Cross in August 2015. John was involved in many aspects of Holy Cross. His roles included being a staff member for the CrossRoad summer program, an administrative assistant for the library, and serving as an Ecclesiarch, a posi-tion that oversees the daily operation of the school’s chapel. Academically, John thrived in his studies while particularly enjoying the courses in Church History, Ethics and Patristics. The Tsikalas family appreciated spending time with the other seminarian families and exploring New England’s beautiful small towns. John enjoys reading, playing board games and watching the St. Louis Cardinals (Chicago will be an adjustment!). Kahlee loves gardening, hosting tea gatherings and utilizing her calligraphy skills. John and Kahlee have a fifteen month old daughter, Aimiliane, who will soon become a big sister! John, Kahlee, and Aimiliane feel incred-ibly fortunate to make a new life in West-chester with such a vibrant, enthusiastic, and loving parish.

Scout, James must complete a service project. When he asked the Retreat Center if we could be the site for his project, we happily agreed and decided that the relocation of the bonfire pit would be the perfect task. James is designingand building the new fire ring and reinstallingthe benches originally built by Fanari. James is helping reignite the Fanari flame, a symbol of faith and a representation of our beloved camping ministry that will be a source of illumination for many generations. If you would like to support James in his diakonia project, please make checks payable to “Troop 117” and include “James Clohessy Eagle Project” in the memo. Donations collected will be used towards the project of the relocation of the bonfire pit. Any donations exceeding the amount of the project costs will be donated to the St. Iakovos Retreat Center. An essential part of every camping facility and retreat center is a bonfire pit. The flames and warmth produced from the bonfire provide every group with a certain character that is unable to be replicated through another source. Bonfires bring fun and joy to the event whether it be making s’mores or singing your favorite camp songs with your best friends. In a more serious setting, a bonfire can be the focal point for a deep and moving discussion for groups of all ages. The bonfire pit at the St. Iakovos Retreat Center holds even more significance because it is a byproduct of the labors of our very own Fanari campers. The first summer Fanari moved into their home in 2015, the campers participated in a beautiful and meaningful dia-konia project that will serve every generation of Fanari after them. The campers of 2015 worked together to design and build the semi-permanent bonfire pit which included the con-struction of the benches as well as the bonfire pit itself. Fortunately the Retreat Center is ex-panding and growing. Due to the generous do-nation of the newly installed playground by the Kulis Foundation, the bonfire pit needed to be moved to its new permanent location near the Chapel of the Life-Giving Spring. This is where things start to come full circle. James Clohessy, one of the Fanari campers who helped build the bonfire pit in 2015 is a Life Scout with Troop 117 in Elmhurst. James is also a parishioner and Altar Boy at Holy Apostles Orthodox Church in Westches-ter. Through his love of service to the Church, his troop, and commitment of diakonia to the Faith and to the Fanari Camping Minis-try, James approached the St. Iakovos Retreat Center inquiring if we could be the site of his Eagle Scout project. Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Boy Scouts and is only completed by 4% of the Scouts. In order to reach the rank of Eagle

MIST DOESN’T DAMPEN PHILANTHROPIC MISSION

The 14th Annual Holy Apostles 5K Family Run & Walk was held on Sat-urday, May 11. Once again, it was an unseasonably cool and misty morning, which limited the participation to a small group of devoted runners and walkers. Crossing the finish line at 21:37 was our overall winner, Katherin Rehn. Diana Kafkes took second place, with Lou Kaf-kes placing third. The Philoxenia House, which is located in Rochester, MN, was the beneficiary from the proceeds of this event. The House provides free lodging and meals to patients and their families whom receive medical treatment at the Mayo Clinic. To date, Holy Apostles has donated over $98,000 to this outstanding organization since the 5K Family Run & Walk’s incep-tion in 2006. A special thank you to our generous sponsors, donors, volunteers, runners and walkers for making this annual event a huge success. Rain or shine, we hope to see many more of our parishioners participate in next year’s 5K Family Run & Walk!

PHILOPTOCHOS NEWSHoly Apostles Vespers Service and Feast Day Celebration

Saturday, June 29 – Vespers Service; Sunday, June 30 – Divine Liturgy

Save the Date - Saturday, October 19 Please mark your calendars for our Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show, An Afternoon in Provence, at The Abbington in Glen Ellyn on Saturday, October 19. Tickets will go on sale in early September. This is our main fundraiser, with proceeds from this event primarily benefitting the DuPage PADS medical respite program and the St. Iakovos Retreat Center, along with many other philanthropic endeavors.

Founded in 1985, DuPage PADS is the largest provider of interim and permanent housing, coupled with support services, to help individuals work toward becoming self-sufficient. A por-tion of the proceeds from this year’s fashion show will go towards their medical respite program, a short-term housing program for DuPage PADS clients with acute medical issues. This program provides a place for homeless clients to recuperate and recover by giving them a secure place to sleep while also serving as a place to store food, clothing and medications. The medical respite program also provides case management to ensure continued medical attention and support ser-vices which are necessary for managing the client’s health long term.

The St. Iakovos Retreat Center is where faith and lifelong friendships are formed and fostered across the Orthodox community. This beautiful center in Kenosha County, Wisconsin is operated by the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago. It is nestled between acres of pinewood forests and Friendship Lake. It offers a peaceful respite from the distractions of everyday life. The Retreat Center strives to provide an environment for people to strengthen their relationship with Christ, while also growing closer to one another. Since its opening in 2015, the Retreat Center has been home to well over 2,000 Fanari Camp participants, nearly 50 parish retreats and over thirty min-istry events for the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago. A portion of the proceeds from the fashion show will go towards sustaining the Retreat Center and to future ministries.

Philoptochos hopes to further the efforts of these charities with a successful fashion show. We could not do this without the generous support of our Holy Apostles community. All are welcome to attend! We look forward to a wonderful afternoon while supporting these worthy beneficiaries.

Thomas is known for doubting. We remember him on the second Sunday of Pascha. When all of the other apostles confessed that Christ had risen, the apostle Thomas said, “I need more proof.” When Jesus provided proof, he then realized that Jesus, indeed, was alive. Thomas joyously exclaimed, “My Lord and my God.” He took the Gospel of Christ all the way to India. We all have great potential to serve the Lord. Sometimes we just need a little more encour-agement or love. Earnest, heartfelt questions about God can lead us to a deeper faith. Matthew is another apostle. He was a wealthy tax collector. Matthew abruptly abandoned his profitable profession so that he could follow the Lord. He was willing to do whatever the Lord asked of him. Simon the Zealot is another apos-tle. Zealots were extremists who were staunchly anti-government. On the other hand, Matthew must have been pro-government because he worked as a government tax collector. Although both of these men were from opposite sides, they found common ground in the Lord. The other apostles were Bartholomew; Thaddeus, (Judas, the son of James); James, the son of Alphaeus; and Matthias, who replaced Judas Iscariot. Upon studying these apostles, we realize they came from varied backgrounds and had different personalities. Each apostle had different levels of understanding and knowl-edge of the Lord. Despite their weaknesses and misunderstandings, the Lord brought them together and utilized them in mighty ways. St. John Chrysostom wrote: “For the good deeds which tax collectors and fishermen were able to accomplish by God’s grace, are beyond the imagination of philosophers, rulers, and the countless multitudes.” Paul had this in mind when he said: The weakness of God is stronger than people. That the preaching of these men was indeed divine is brought home to us in the same way. For how otherwise could twelve uneducated men, who lived on lakes and rivers and wastelands, conceive the idea for such an immense enterprise? How could men who per-haps had never been in a city or a public square think of setting out to do battle with the whole world? That they were fearful, timid men, the evangelist makes clear; He did not reject the fact or try to hide their weaknesses. Indeed he turned these into a proof of the truth. This entire year and especially this month, on June 30th, we will remember and commemo-rate these 12 apostles. Although they were weak and had many shortcomings, the Lord worked powerfully through them. They were sent out to spread the Gospel. The Good News of the Gospel eventually spread throughout the entire world.

It all started with these 12 people. They were ordinary people that, by the grace of God, did extraordinary things. Although they were diverse and were even weak at times, they offered themselves to the Lord’s service and He fully utilized their talents. Our Holy Apostles Church was built by people faithfully offering themselves to God. We can do the same by fol-lowing in their footsteps and offering our time and talents to God!
