FROM THE PASTORFROM THE PASTORFROM THE PASTORFROM THE PASTOR
Elections
This has been one of the weirdest elections ever. I
think most people agree on that no matter who
they’re voting for. The strangest words are now
commonplace on the news. Racism has become an
acceptable platform. Candidates are not only calling
out their opponent, but their opponent’s supporters.
Every election cycle, we get to this place in the
conversation where we’re all doomed if the other side
wins. This time, it got there pretty quickly and has
been growing ever since. Each side is convinced that
the other will absolutely destroy the country, if not
the entire world.
Obviously, hyperbole is one of the main tactics of
elections, and no one is innocent of it. But this year in
particular, the hostility is palpable. In the last debate
the candidates didn’t even shake hands and it
sincerely feels like the biggest enemy is not anyone
outside our country that might threaten us, the
biggest enemy is the other political party inside our
country.
As people of faith, voting is our responsibility. It is our
call as citizens of this world to make sure our leaders
are working for justice for all people. And certainly,
some candidates have had ideas and goals that have
gone against God’s will and vision, and we have a
responsibility to vote and to speak out against ideas
and goals that are unjust.
But as people of faith, it is also our responsibility not
to get drawn up in the hate and vitriol that is present
in any election. We have a responsibility to see those
we don’t agree with – even those who might do
terrible things – as human beings. Listening,
understanding, reconciliation, forgiveness, loving your
enemy – these are all terms we bandy about as
Christians. And we need to do all of these things in
easy times and in the hardest times – election years
included.
On November 9th, the voting will be over, the
commercials will end, and the campaign managers
won’t need us anymore. And we still have to come
together and work, and worship, and even live with
people who voted differently. We’ll still need to go
and eat Thanksgiving dinner with our family. And
someone will probably say something that will
infuriate us and maybe we will feel compelled to say
something in return.
But in the end, the biggest testament to our Christian
faith may not be how we voted, it may be our ability
to love those we disagree with.

Moving from Welcoming to Inviting
Pastor Grant Eckart
Please make plans to attend our yearly discussion of
outreach during the November 6 Lifetime Learning
hour. While as individuals and as a congregation we
do a good job in welcoming others into Gethsemane,
there is always opportunity for improvement. Pastor
Grant Eckhart will lead the discussion centered upon
moving from "Welcoming" to "Inviting". Pastor
Eckhart currently serves as minister at Jacob’s Porch,
our Lutheran congregation for OSU students and
associates. Pastor Eckhart will also be preaching
during our worship service that morning.

Welcome Our Children’s
Ministry Assistant
Julia Wiebe is a junior at Capital University major-
ing in International Studies with minors in History
and Spanish. Her favorite thing about Capital is
the Yarn Club. They meet once a week to knit,
crochet, and share community. Before joining she
knew how to knit but didn’t do it very much. Now
Julia knits probably more than she should, espe-
cially during exams. She is originally from Kewas-
kum, Wisconsin, a small town about an hour
north of Milwaukee. When at home, she loves
watching hockey and cheesy movies, baking,
reading, and playing with the family’s three dogs.
She seems to embody many Wisconsinite stereo-
types as she loves cheese, winter, and the Green
Bay Packers! During the summer, she works at
the same Lutheran camp that she grew up going
to in the woods of northern Wisconsin. She loves
helping kids to grow in their faith and have fun
while doing it! After college, she hopes to travel
abroad with the ELCA’s Young Adults in Global
Mission program and to continue to do God’s
work in the world however she is called.

Adejoke Adesodn
200 Broad Meadows Boulevard
Apt. 5
Columbus, OH 43214
614-316-5321
Adejoke, who prefers to be called Ade, moved to the United States from
Nigeria. She was baptized and confirmed as a Pentecostal, but we are
happy to have her join us in the Lutheran faith at Gethsemane through
Affirmation of Faith. She graduated with a degree in statistics from a college in Nigeria.
Erin Carlile (Glyn)
Clara, Rory
6393 Ridge Lake Court
Westerville, OH 43082
614-736-0538
Erin is a cradle Lutheran who has spent her adulthood thus far
enthusiastically church hopping. Since moving to Columbus ten years
ago, she has visited or attended 20 different churches! Which makes
her all the more thrilled to finally, finally call Gethsemane "home."
Erin is a native of San Antonio, Texas and has strong German-Texan-Lutheran roots, which is probably why all
those non-Lutheran churches she visited over the years never felt quite right. She is married to a handsome
British guy named Glyn, who you may see each year on Christmas Eve. Glyn was raised to be suspicious of the
state-sanctioned Anglican Church, and his own father fervently believes that all churches in England should be
turned into pubs, so the fact that he supports Erin and the kids in their desire to be part of a church community is
no small thing. Children Clara and Rory are the only true Buckeyes in the family, and seem quite proud of that. The
whole family lives in Westerville with their two dogs, Mr. Bounds and Toffee.
Rick and Dianne Nelson
521 Sioux Drive
Westerville, OH 43081
614-891-3192
Rick and Dianne transferred from Grace Lutheran Church in Westerville.
They had been members of Gethsemane many years ago until they
moved to Westerville to be closer to the high school. Dianne was
baptized, their oldest daughter Kristine was confirmed and their two
other children Eric and Melinda were baptized at Gethsemane. Rick and Dianne enjoy taking trips, reading and
going to movies. They have three adult grandchildren – Kandace, Kody, and Justice.

7979 Cedar View Boulevard
Westerville, OH 43081
Kreig – 814-282-8380
Deidre – 614-779-6857
Kreig Spahn grew up in northwestern Pennsylvania, about 1.5 hours
north of Pittsburgh. He went to college at Wittenberg University, and
graduated with a degree in Mathematics. He then went to Bowling
Green State University, where he got his Masters Degree in Analytics. He currently works as an AML (Anti-Money
Laundering) Investigator. In his spare time, he likes to read and cheer on Pittsburgh sports teams. Kreig grew up in
the Lutheran church, and is excited to join the Gethsemane congregation!
Deidre Hooley is very excited to be here at Gethsemane. She grew up in Columbus and lived in Grandview
Heights. She went to Wittenberg University and got her bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. She
currently is a Kindergarten teacher at a school where all of the children are from Africa. In her spare time she likes
to sing, read, and spend time with her cat, Dexter. Deidre’s parents still live in Grandview and she has an older
sister and two little brothers, one who is 11 and the other who is 4. They just moved to the area recently and
found Gethsemane online as a Lutheran church nearby. She is so glad they decided to come and check us out,
because it is now their new home! Deidre is looking forward to meeting everyone and becoming an active
member in the church.
Diane Spink
4459 Wrangell Place
Columbus, OH 43230
614-471-2330
Diane Spink was born in northwestern Minnesota where she was
baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She graduated second in
her class and attended college in North Dakota where she double
majored in mathematics and computer science. She was also a member
of the scholars program there. Later she became a member of Mensa.
Diane moved to Columbus in the 70s and married Gary Spink. They have no children.
She was a computer programmer/systems analyst for several companies, obtained an F.L.M.I. life insurance
degree, created a greeting card business using her own photography, worked for a bookstore, and is currently
working for a craft store as a guest service clerk.
Diane loves music and plays many instruments both by music and by ear. She loves reading non-fiction books,
especially in the areas of comparative religion and psychology. As a storyteller, she loves to read and listen to
stories and then pass them on. She also enjoys creating craft projects to donate in areas such as knitting, sewing,
and embroidery.
