FROM THE PASTORFROM THE PASTORFROM THE PASTORFROM THE PASTOR

500 Years of Reformation

So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything

old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

2 Corinthians 5:17

Twenty Seventeen is a big year! This October marks

the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation.

Churches around the world (not just Lutheran) have

been preparing and celebrating for a couple of years

now. The

Reformation was

not just an

important time

for Lutherans, it

was important

for everyone. The

Reformation of

the church in

Germany was a

catalyst for the

creation of other denominations and for changes

within the Roman Catholic Church. It also changed the

way people think about religion, faith, politics,

authority, hierarchy, class, and so many other

important things. Some say that the Reformation

saved Europe from the Dark Ages, and some say that

the Reformation happened because Europe left the

Dark Ages. Either way, October 31, 1517, the day that

Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses to the door of the

church in Wittenberg, is understood as a turning point

for all of the Western World.

There are lots of events in our Synod centering around

the Reformation: movies, TV shows, plays, classes,

discussions and worship services. And Gethsemane is

having our own events: From October 8th-22nd, we

will focus in worship on some different aspects of the

Reformation and what it means to us. During that

time, we will also have a Reformation Book Fair. You

can order from a selection of new Augsburg Fortress

books about the Reformation at a discount. On

October 8th, Gethsemane will have a hymn festival

Evening and Morning: Celebrating 410 Years of the

Hymnody of Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676) who was a

prolific hymn writer for the newly founded Lutheran

church in Germany. And our celebration will culminate

on October 29th with a Reformation Worship

(including three confirmations!) followed by a

Reformation Celebration with a pot-luck and Jell-O

Contest!

I hope you can join us for all or some of our

Reformation Celebration this October!

“Luther and the Reformation”

Sharon and Eric Walton

ALL AGES INVITED to the SANCTUARY

Travel expert Rick Steves sheds light on the 500th

anniversary of the Reformation by visiting key sites

(including Erfurt, Wittenberg and Rome), and explores

the complicated political world of 16th-century

Europe, from indulgences to iconoclasts, and from the

printing press to the Counter-Reformation. It’s a story

of power, rebellion and faith that precipitated change

in Europe and Christianity forever, and contributed to

the birth of our modern world.
