“The Friendliest Guy in Berks County” by Matt Brophy
Mike Reddy, a lifelong Berks County resident, first started to get serious about running in 2010. At that point, approach-ing his 50s, he was looking for something a little more “intense” than bicycling, tennis, or golf. Some of his relatives were long-distance runners, but it was hard for him to imag-ine having much fun running around the streets of his neigh-borhood in Wyomissing. That's when he discovered the trails—and the Pagoda Pac-ers. While road running held little appeal for Reddy, trail running ignited something “primal” within him. To be out in the woods, amidst nature, in the clean air, was somehow much more invigorating than hitting the pavement. Running with the Pacers motivated Mike to quickly up his game from a guy who could barely make it through a five-mile run at Blue Marsh (his first Wednesday Night with the club) to a confident runner who can hammer out a 50k at a steady clip. Reddy fondly recalled a strong performance at the HAT 50k in 2014 (finishing 60th in a field of over 380) in which he proudly realized he could hang in there with many of the clubs more experienced ultra runners. Other memorable races for Reddy include the North Face Bear Mountain 50k (which he did in 2014 and 2016) as well as the races he ran in Poland with his partner, Anna Pis-
korska. These latter races, he told me, had fewer aid stations, forcing runners to be more self-sufficient—carrying more food and water, and strategizing with drop bags. Reddy also has an affinity for night running. Pretzel City's “Dark & Dirty Trail Run” was his first race, and he still runs it nearly every year. He also enjoys pacing other runners through the night who are competing in more extreme events, such as 100-milers. In fact, when I asked him about memora-ble races, he told me that he actually has fonder memories of pacing other runners rather than racing for himself. In 2013, for example, he paced his nephew at the Leadville 100, and the following year he paced Piskorska at the iconic Western States 100. Most recently, he paced a runner who reached out for support at the Tahoe 200 Endurance Run. For those who know Reddy, this comes as no surprise. He seems to love to chat—with pretty much anyone—as much as he loves to run. While he pushes himself out on the course, it's not so much an aggressive spirit of competition (that's in the past, with his boyhood hockey days) as a relentless curi-osity about other runners. He finds himself running from one interesting conversation to the next, eager to catch up to a new runner and make a new friend. It's this radiant friendliness that makes Reddy such a great Pagoda Pacer. The club received him, not so long ago, with a spirit of acceptance, and inspired him to become the runner he is now, and he seems committed to replicating that spirit. Nothing feels better, he told me, than to be surrounded by like-minded people, gathered “for the love of the run.” Where else can one run alongside such talented athletes as Jim Bland-ford, Mike Yoder, and Donny Mengel, without being made to feel “less than”? Not to mention running alongside the great Anna Piskorska. During the four years that they've been together, Reddy cred-its his champion partner with having taught him many invalua-ble lessons about training, nutrition, and most of all toughness. “She's the toughest runner I know,” Reddy said. Other important people in Reddy's life include his son, Tyler, currently in law school, and his daughter, Lauren, an 11th grade English teacher at Berks Catholic High School. Lauren also coaches tennis for the school, and Reddy helps out as her assistant. When Reddy's not running with his legs, he's running his busi-ness—with his hands. For the past thirty years, he's been crafting prosthetic teeth for local dentists. The job allows him to satisfy his artistic side, be his own boss, and work from home. The only down side is that, when he's working, he's stuck inside by himself—for an extrovert like Reddy, so many hours cooped up alone can be a little taxing.
All the more reason that, once out of the house and on the trails, he'll eagerly invite you to join him at a conversational pace.
Mike Reddy, left, making new friends on trail during a
September visit to the Tahoe 200 Endurance Run Ultra.

A Note from Jackie Merritt—
So I started running for Milestone Sports athlete team. They make these little pods that attach to your shoe and give you metrics about your running mechanics that can be really useful for in-jury recovery and preven-tion and running efficiency. They also give data on dis-tance of run, pace, etc., like GPS. I asked the company if my trail running groups could get a special discount if they wanted to buy a Pod to try, and they agreed! The Pod retails for $24.95 and all Pagoda Pacers members can use the code Jackie20 to get 20% off if they want one.
Here is their website http://www.milestonepod.com/
No end date set. 20% off orders on our website. Limited to one order per customer (unlimited # of Pods in that order).
