• Makes head test print.

• Prints test image on top 2 or 3 medias as a base line reference with the currently used competition

• Documents all details with the competition ink.

CIELab model

The CIELab model is an internationally recognised standard that mathematically describes colour in terms of three coordinates. These are L (light/dark), a (red/green) and b (yellow/blue). The CIELab model describe colours in terms of a colour space,represented by the sphere shown above. Thistheoretically describes all colours that are visible to the human eyes. In practice however, as the human eye does not work in a linear fashion, somecolours on the extremities of this colour space are not visible.

Although the sphere shown in model covers all colours that can theoretically exist, printers and other devices cannot actually produce all of them. What is now to be considered is the colour gamut, that is the range of colours that a device can actually produce.

Why is gamut important?

In order to match the colours that the designer has selected on his screen, the printer has to actually be capable of reproducing the colours. To make matters more difficult, colours on the edge of the gamut are bright and saturated – exactly the colours chosen by many brands.

As you can see in this image, Red and Purple (represented in white circles) are right on the outer edge of the RGB wireframe colour gamut. It would not be possible to print these with the reduced gamut from the desktop inkjet printer. So, wide colour gamut is important. But how

do we get this? Why not just print more ink?

Why printing more ink to achieve accurate colour gamut is a bad idea?

We need to understand that whether ink layer is applied to a paper or plastic, they have to be dried or cured at some point. Applying an excessive amount of ink inevitably leads to curing /drying problems and therefore it should be avoided. A rule of thumb with UV inks is that a 10% increase in ink deposit requires double the UV energy to get the same level of cure.

Similar factors apply with solvent inks where higher ink deposit increases drying time.

Secondly, increase in ink deposit does not help with colour gamut past a certain point. Once a certaincolour saturation is reached, further increase inink deposit simply makes the ink go darker rather than brighter. One can see this effect by lookingat a cyan or magenta inkjet ink in its container.

In order to have the best chance of producing exact colours, the inks should be capable of reproducing a wide colour gamut but this is just something that is needed in order to qualify for the next stage of the process.

In order to match the output of the device and match them to an accepted standard, a profile needs to be attached to the source (monitor) and the destination (printer). Colour profiles are usually made to conform to the International ColourConsortium (ICC) standard that ensures compatibility.

A profile is essentially a group of data that defines how much cyan, magenta, yellow and black should be present in a specific colour. This data is calculatedfor a number of colours that together represent a standardised colour gamut.

Linearization

After profiling, linearization should be done because producing prints that are a good visual match requires good greys as the human eye is extremely fussy when looking at grey colours.

Linearisation has number of functions

• To set ink limits – (maximum amount of each colour that can be applied) Ink limits are set because all industrial printers can apply far more ink to the substrate than it is needed.

• Adjusting the tonal curve so that all points within that curve are evenly spread.

• Adjusting the grey balance so that the prints from different devices match.

Control Strip Measurement Linearization

This is a process where a control strip is printed. This contains halftone patches at 10%, 20% up to 90% and 100%. Once printed, this is read by a densitometer. The software reads the density and applies a suitable correction.

This stage is to harmonise the grey balance between print devices.

Before swapping the color+ ink, you need to take default head test prints to understand the present head nozzle condition.

Then you need to clean all CMYK ink channels or ink tubes by passing existing flushing solution & remove the same by passing air from ink lines.

Then once again you need to clean the ink tubes by passing color+ flushing solution until all ink particles are thoroughly cleaned

After this process, you need to load color+ ink in main tank, purge all the heads one by one to remove the flushing solution completely. While purging inks from the printheads, make sure there is no ink overflow in the air tank or safety tank.

Take proper head nozzle test & one long run CMYK colour print.

Check negative pressure where applicable.

Check the ink tubings and clamps to ensure pressure is not leaking.

Ensure during standby mode, the printheads are ‘spitting’.

If printer is not going to be in operation for long time then printer should be shut down with proper cleaning of all heads.

All printheads must be cleaned by flushing solution.

Head parking should be covered with lint free cloth soaked in flushing solution. All ink tubings should be completely primed with flushing solution.

If final prints are not good or colours are not coming out with desired file tone, then you need to adjust colour curves in the ripping software or adjust the ink limit.

Also do colour calibration or colour profiling.

Check whether all heaters are properly heating the printing substrate.

Check whether dryer fan is working.

Ensure that substrates do not contain moisture on printing side.

Maximum outdoor life of the ink is achieved with 100% colour saturation.

The standard way of head cleaning is daily flushing the printheads after the printer is switched on & switched off (shut down).

Once in every month, you need to clean the complete ink line with flushing solution from main tank to the printheads.

If printhead nozzles are blocked, heads can be cleaned ultrasonically.

You can also clean by continuously jetting the solvent from printheads by using Dr. Solvent Head Cleaner.
