tended the ‘Sidewalk Astro-nomy’ event conducted byTamilnadu Astronomical So-ciety in Corporation Play-ground (9th Avenue, AshokNagar) last week.

The participants were givena guided tour of stars and con-stellations. Three telescopeswere used to view the Moonand the planets Jupiter andSaturn.

Sidewalk Astronomy was aconcept created by the wellknown amateur astrono-mer John Dobson. He is cred-ited with making astronomyaccessible to common man.

He invented the famousDobsonian model telescope,which is portable and cheap tomanufacture. He made as-tronomy popular by setting upDobsonian telescopes on side-walks during clear evenings andoffering to show and explainthe night sky to passersby.

Haripriya, a young memberwho was volunteering at theevent, said that it was one suchsidewalk astronomy event that

Sir, The service lanes of Usman Road flyover (T. Nagar) are encroachedupon by hawkers.

Free flow of traffic is disrupted leading to regular traffic jams,especially during peak hours.

Autorickshaws either strut along or wait in the lane looking forpotential customers thereby further blocking the traffic and alsocausing inconvenience to pedestrians.

Adding to the woes, shoppers park their vehicles on the side lanes ofUsman Road thereby reducing its width and causing nuisance to theresidents.

Sir, I am resident of Kamakoti Street (off Lake View Road, WestMambalam). For the past three months, the residents of KamakotiFlats which is at the beginning of the street are parking their twowheelers on the road itself, which blocks almost 50% of the road width.At any given time there are a minimum of 20 vehicles parked on theroad outside the flats.

This is causing a severe traffic problem on the street and also on theadjacent lanes.
