Medical Restorative Massage Therapy (MRMT) is the advanced practice of:

– Reducing chronic pain and restoring physical function,

– Through the passive and active application of blended massage therapy techniques,

– Within the structure of a medical model.

Medical Restorative Massage Therapy®

• Assess the patient’s condition and identify specific dysfunction(s) continuously during the course of treatment.

• Develop an individualized Plan of Care.

• Execute the Plan of Care, including patient self-care regarding behaviors or lifestyle issues that impact current pain and diminished physical function.

• Maintain records and charts to monitor progress and adjust the Plan of Care as appropriate.

• Collaborate and communicate with physicians and other medical professionals to function as part of each patient’s healthcare team.

• MRMT focuses on when and why to apply a fundamental technique to reduce

pain and / or restore physical function.

• The following techniques are incorporated into the training and practice of MRMT:

- Structural and Postural Integration Approaches - Dr. Kellogg’s The Art of Massage, Swedish Massage

- Emphasis on active joint movements

- Neuromuscular Approaches- Neuromuscular Techniques, Orthorelease, Trigger Point Therapy

• Started in 1997 as Thuy, a table and a room.• First opened the Clinic, and later began training new

therapists.• M. T. Wellness Clinic:

– Provides Medical Restorative Massage Therapy® to clients experiencing chronic pain and / or loss of physical function.

– Extremely successful – we have too many patients!• M. T. Wellness Training Center:

– Initially offered two programs: one for basic massage and one for advanced training and certification

– MRMT® Program combines basic and advanced training for licensed massage therapists and certification in MRMT.

• 1,092 clock hours of instruction in:

– Anatomy, physiology, pathology,

– Basic Kellogg procedures,

– Passive Pain Management Techniques,

– Active Restorative Function Techniques™,

– Medical courses, including documentation, communication and

overview of health care systems, and

– Professional development courses, including business organization,

ethics, leadership.

MRMT® Program

• Level 1 Student Clinic

– Practice passive pain management techniques in a clinical setting.

– Learn how to interact with patients.

– Assessment, documentation and evaluation.

– We use real patients, not your classmates.

• Level 2 Student Clinic

– Practice Active Restorative Function Techniques™.

– Train for daily life as a CMRMT.

– Work on complex issues with real chronic pain patients.

MRMT® Program

• 18 months, beginning May 2011, ending October 2012

– 6 terms, each 12 weeks long

– 7-12 days of break between terms

– Eligible for December 2012 exam

• Tuesday and Thursday from 8am-5pm

– Allows for students to work part-time while in school.

– Student clinics will be scheduled according to availability.

• Tuition: $2,912 per term, or $971 per month

• Application fee: $100

• Other costs– School uniform shirts

– Textbooks (about $350 for the entire program, not per term)

– State Medical Board-required fees

• Materials such as sheets, tables and other massage supplies will

be provided by M. T. Wellness.
