Pop Art Inspired LichtensteinIf you are a fan of pop art then you're probably already well acquainted with the work Roy Lichtenstein. Roy Lichtenstein became one of the leading pop artists of the sixties with his comic-strip paintings. Drowning Girl 1963, shown left, is one of his better known works and is a good example of the design features in his most famous pieces. His work contains the thick lines, bold colors, and thought bubble. It also often included boxed captions and words such as "WHAAM!", commonly found in comic books.

Benday dots were Lichtenstein's trademark. Benday dots are a printing process which combines two (or more) different small, colored dots to create a third color. Back in the day, pulp comic books used benday dots in primary colors to inexpensively create the secondary colors such as flesh tone. The inspired Pop Art portrait incorporate the use of Layer

Masking, Brush tool, Paint bucket and some selecting. Most of the drastic image manipulations come directly from the Image – Adjustments options. The use of the Pop Art technique could be applied to projects intended on containing illustration effects. This procedure can easily change an image into an interesting work using a popular artistic method.

Procedure

1. Remove the background by selecting the background and deleting from the original image.

2. Desaturate the original image and apply a Threshold using Image > Adjustments > Threshold. Name the layer Threshold Image.

3. Duplicate the Threshold Image layer to a New document4. In the New document, change the Threshold Image Mode to Grayscale and Don’t Merge5. Change Mode again to Bitmap and begin with the following settings

6. Experiment by adjusting the frequency. Make sure it is set to Round as well.

7. When you find a setting you like change the mode back to Grayscale, set the size ratio to 1.

8. Duplicate the layer Threshold Image back to the original document. Rename this layer to Dot Image9. Create a clipping mask using the Dot Image over top of the Threshold Image.

10. Apply Solid Fill layers for each facial feature including the clothing.

11. Apply Black using the Paint Bucket to the Layer Mask of the Solid Fill color. Use White to paint over each facial feature or article of clothing. Use this process for applying color. Keep the Dot Image on top of each Solid Fill color.
