IntroductionFive Days is a drama in six episodes, each
approximately ten minutes long. Each episode
is divided into three, four, or five scenes. The
story uses contemporary characters, up-to-date
situations, and an interesting storyline to appeal to
teenage viewers.
Story OverviewFive Days is the story of four teenage students,
Nina, Simon, Harry, and Rachel, who have five
days to make a TV program about London for a
competition.
– Nina, an American student studying in London,
is the director of the program.
– Simon, also an American student, is the
cameraman.
– Harry is the presenter.
– Rachel is the production assistant.
The friends plan the activities of each day well,
but there are always problems. These problems
are usually the result of Rachel’s forgetfulness
or carelessness. Nina, Simon, and Harry begin
to wonder if Rachel is deliberately making
mistakes. They only discover the truth on the last
day—Rachel has been taking care of her disabled
mother and sick brother, so she hasn’t been
able to concentrate on the program. Fortunately,
there’s still time to finish the program. A week
later, the four friends hear that they have won the
competition.
Plot SummaryEpisode 1 (Day 1) Monday
Nina and Simon have advertised for a presenter
for the program. Two boys and six girls have
applied. Nina and Simon hold auditions and
film each of the applicants talking about
themselves. None of them are suitable. The last
person, Rachel, arrives late. She seems good
at first, but her cell phone rings in the middle of
the audition. She has to leave, and she doesn’t
give an explanation.
Nina and Simon have almost given up hope
when Harry walks in and asks what they are
doing. They explain and ask Harry if he’s
interested. When they film him, Nina and Simon
realize Harry’s perfect for the presenter’s job.
Nina, Simon, and Harry are leaving the school
when Rachel comes back. She wants another
chance to do the audition, but Nina and Simon
explain that they have already chosen Harry as
the presenter. Rachel is very disappointed.
Episode 2 (Day 2) Tuesday
Simon’s father is going to show the friends
around the television company where he works.
Harry is surprised when Rachel arrives with Nina.
Simon explains to Harry that Rachel is going to
be the production assistant.
Simon’s father shows the friends around the
television company. They see the production
office, the control room, the television studio,
and the editing room. After this, the friends
go to a café to plan what to include in their
program. While they are discussing their ideas,
Rachel looks at her watch and says that she
has to go. Again, she leaves in a hurry, without
an explanation. Nina, Simon, and Harry are
beginning to find her behavior rather strange.
Episode 3 (Day 3) Wednesday
The friends meet at the office where they are
going to film the introduction to the show.
Rachel called the office the day before to make
an appointment, but she made it for the wrong
day. It looks as though they won’t be able to
film the introduction. Fortunately, Harry is able
to sort out the situation, and they go up to the
office to start filming.
After this, they go to Leicester Square to do a
section about theaters and movies in London.
They watch the movie that is currently the most
popular in London, and then Harry films a review
about it outside the movie theater. Unfortunately,
Rachel’s phone rings in the middle of filming
and they have to stop. Just like she did before,
Rachel leaves in a hurry, without an explanation.
Nina, Simon, and Harry have to film the section
again. Nina, Simon, and Harry are having serious
doubts about Rachel now.

Episode 4 (Day 4) Thursday
It’s the last day of filming. The friends meet at
Nina’s house to plan the day. First, they are
going to film what teenagers are wearing on
the streets of London, and then they are going
to film a sequence in an Indian restaurant. The
fashion section goes well, but when they get to
the Indian restaurant, they find that their table
was booked for an hour earlier. Rachel tries
to tell them that she made the booking for the
correct time, but the friends aren’t convinced.
They have to quickly change their plan. They
decide to film short sections in different parts
of London. They start outside the Houses of
Parliament. Simon asks Rachel to carry his
laptop bag while he films Harry. They film this
section and then go on to film at different
London landmarks. At the final location, Hyde
Park, Simon asks for his laptop bag. When he
opens the bag, he sees that Rachel put her
water bottle next to the laptop and the bottle
leaked. The laptop is ruined. Simon lost all the
film that he edited on the laptop. Simon is too
upset to speak and walks off. Rachel tries to
apologize, but Nina and Harry don’t want to
listen.
Episode 5 (Day 5 part 1) Friday
It’s the final day. The edited program has to be
handed in by six o’clock. Simon is trying to fix
his laptop. His father tries to help him, but it’s
beyond repair. In the meantime, Nina and Harry
are choosing music for the program. When they
get to Simon’s house, he shows them the new
laptop which his father has lent him. He can use
it to make a new edited version of the program.
Unfortunately, there’s still a problem: Rachel has
the original tapes of the program. They call her
and explain that they need the tapes. She says
she has them in one of her bags and offers to
take them to Simon’s house. She’s just about
to leave when her mother calls her. She grabs a
bag and rushes out to speak to her mother.
Nina, Simon, and Harry wait for Rachel at
Simon’s house. She arrives an hour late and
has the wrong bag—the tapes aren’t in it. The
friends finally lose patience with her and accuse
her of deliberately trying to cause problems. She
tries to explain, but they don’t want to listen,
and they tell her to go.
After Rachel leaves, they realize that they still
have a problem. Rachel still has the tapes, and
the friends need them to make a new edited
version of the program.
Episode 6 (Day 5 part 2) Friday
Nina, Simon, and Harry go to Rachel’s house
to get the tapes. Rachel’s mother answers the
door, and they’re surprised to see that she’s
in a wheelchair. Rachel is at the store, so they
wait for her. Rachel’s mother tells Nina, Simon,
and Harry how difficult things are for Rachel at
the moment. She has to do the housework for
her mother and take care of her sick brother
because her father is away on business. The
friends realize that this is why Rachel has been
making so many mistakes.
When Rachel gets back, she gives them the
tapes. They stay at Rachel’s house while Simon
edits a new version of the program on his
laptop. By the time he is finished, it’s almost
the deadline for handing in the program. Rachel
takes it to the office on her bike and arrives just
in time.
A week later the friends are at Rachel’s house
again. They’re waiting to see which program
won the competition. The winning program will
be shown on television. The program starts, and
they hear Harry’s voice doing the introduction.
They have won the competition!
The complete scripts for the episodes can be
found on pages 35–45.
Why use the Five Days DVD in the classroom?Five Days gives students the opportunity to:
• hear real English used by their own age group
• hear the English they have learned in class in
real situations
• develop their listening skills, in particular,
listening for gist, listening for inference, and
intensive listening
• get used to hearing and understanding a variety
of accents, especially British and American
• develop a feel for using English in
conversational situations
In addition, Five Days provides a break from the
standard book-based activities of the class.

How are the DVD worksheets organized? There are four pages of worksheets for each of the
six episodes. Each group of worksheets provides
enough material for at least one forty-minute
lesson. The Language Summary contains lists of
the language used in each episode, divided into
grammar, vocabulary, and functions.
The worksheet activities for each episode are
divided into three sections: Before watching, While
watching, and After watching.
The first section, Before watching, can be done
in the class before watching the DVD, or for
homework before watching. The final section,
After watching, can be done following class or for
homework.
Before watchingStudents do these activities before they watch
the episode. The activities are designed to help
students recall the story so far, and to set the
scene for the episode they are about to watch.
While watchingFirst, students watch the whole episode and do
one or two activities about it. This part is designed
to familiarize the students with the general content
of the episode.
Then students watch each scene in detail and do
one or two activities about it. This part is designed
to help students with detailed understanding of
each scene.
After watchingThese activities focus on specific language points
in the episode (useful expressions), and on writing
a summary of the episode. The final activity is a
roleplay based on a scene similar to the one in the
episode.

Basic video techniquesin the classroom
PredictionBefore students watch the DVD, give them some
information about it and encourage them to
predict what they are going to see. For example,
you could say; This is the story of four students.
They’re filming a TV program . . . , then encourage
students to speculate what the program is about,
why the characters in the DVD are making it,
what problems they will have, etc. You can guide
students’ answers so that their predictions are
more or less along the right lines.
Prediction activities involve students in the video
right from the start. Prediction also encourages
more active participation because students have a
reason to watch it—to see if their predictions were
correct. This gives better results than if students
just sit back and watch the story.
Silent listeningWatching a section of the video without sound
involves another type of prediction. Students
can see what is happening, but they don’t know
exactly what is being said. By asking them to
guess what is being said, students use all the
visual cues, and the English they have learned in
class so far.
Listening without subtitlesMost of the video should be watched with sound,
but without subtitles. This way, students are
encouraged to develop their listening skills. This
type of listening can be exploited in many ways.
The DVD worksheets contain a wide range of
activities based on viewing individual scenes in
each episode with sound.
Listening with subtitlesThe subtitles should only be turned on during the
last viewing of the video. If they are turned on
earlier, students focus on reading the subtitles,
not on listening. However, once students have
done all the listening work they can do, it’s a good
idea to let them watch the video with subtitles.
This allows students to make sure they have
understood the episode and gives them a chance
to review parts that they haven’t understood.
Listening for gistStudents should be allowed to watch each
episode of the story from start to finish, before
they watch the individual scenes in the episode.
This allows students to get a general idea of the
episode, which will help them to later understand
in detail what happens in each scene.
Intensive listeningAfter watching the complete episode, students
should watch the individual scenes of the
episode. At this stage, students are practicing
intensive listening. They are listening for detailed
information such as times, places, and particular
expressions or utterances.
Listening for inferenceA DVD is the ideal means for practicing listening
for inference. Students are not simply listening to
what is said, but are also getting information about
how it is said, and how the characters are acting
and reacting. In this way, students learn to “read
between the lines,” speculating about how the
characters feel about the events and each other.
Follow-up activitiesThe learning process doesn’t stop when the DVD
ends. There should always be time for follow-up
activities, such as summarizing what happened
in the episode, and doing roleplays based on
the situations in the episode. These activities
encourage students to use the language they
have seen and heard in the episode for their own
communication.
Tips for using Five Daysin the classroom
Use a variety of techniquesWhen students are watching an episode for
the first time, encourage listening for gist. It’s
important for students to get a general idea of
what is happening in the episode. This helps
students to see that they can understand the
episode without understanding everything the
characters say.
When students are watching individual scenes in
each episode, make sure that they understand
what has happened in each scene. This means
8 Copyright © 2011 by Pearson Education, Inc. Permission granted to reproduce for classroom use.
understanding the implications of each event as
well as the simple details.
Encourage active participationEncourage students to interpret what they see
and predict what they think is going to happen.
Encourage the use of visual informationAsk students questions focusing on how the
people in the video look, what they think the
people are feeling, etc.
Encourage the use of audio informationAsk students to focus on the way the characters
say things, for example, the way they express
excitement, interest, disappointment, anger, etc.
Point out that meaning is often carried by the
way in which words are spoken, rather than in the
words themselves.
Limit the use of subtitlesIn the worksheets, teachers are only asked to turn
the subtitles on in the last section. If students are
allowed to see the subtitles earlier, their attention
will be focused on the subtitles, and they will miss
visual cues and listening practice.
Encourage personalizationInvolve students by asking
• what they would do in a certain situation
• what they would feel
• how they would react, etc.
It’s important for students to see the story as real
people in real situations. The final activity of the
worksheet for each episode includes a roleplay
activity designed to relate what happens in the
story to students’ own experience.
Make it enjoyableAbove all, remember that watching a DVD
story like Five Days should be an enjoyable
activity. Encourage students to identify with the
characters, to sympathize with them, and even
to criticize them, just as they do with people their
own age whom they meet in their everyday lives.
This way, they can see that English is a living, real
language used by teenagers like themselves in real
situations. As a result, Five Days will show learning
English to be a relevant, useful, and enjoyable
experience.

EPISODE 1
Scene 1
Nina: Are there any boys?
Simon: Let’s see . . . one, . . . two.
Nina: How many girls?
Simon: A lot. Six. Now she’s interesting.
Nina: Rachel Farmer? Do I know her?
Simon: Yeah, she’s in 10th grade. She acts in school
plays. And her dream job?—a TV presenter!
Nina: She sounds great.
Simon: Nina? Are there any cookies?
Nina: Cookies? You’re joking, right?
Simon: No, not for me. For . . .
Nina: There are some cookies in my bag.
Simon: Thanks.
Nina: Is it working?
Simon: Yes.
Nina: Are you sure?
Simon: Of course! My dad works in TV, remember?
See.
Nina: Are you fi lming me?
Simon: Yeah, let’s practice. You can do an audition.
Nina: No way! I’m the director, not the presenter!
Simon: Come on . . . It’s just for fun.
Scene 2
Nina: OK, then . . . My name’s Nina. Nina Javed
and my mom and dad are from India. I have
two brothers. And . . . what else?
Simon: Who are your friends?
Nina: You . . . and Tony, Avein, Serena, Anwen,
Manjinder, Bob, Darren, Naomi, and . . .
Simon: OK, OK! And what do you do in your free
time?
Nina: I go to galleries and museums . . . and malls
and restaurants . . .
Simon: What about the school magazine?
Nina: Oh yes, I edit the school magazine. And . . .
that’s it. That’s me. Cut! So? What do you
think? Am I a great TV presenter?
Simon: Um . . . let’s see the others.
Nina: Good idea . . .
Scene 3
Nina: Hi Linda.
Linda: Hi.
Nina: OK. We’re making a TV program, for a
competition for schools. It’s about the city
you live in. We have one week to make it.
I’m the director. And that’s Simon. He’s
fi lming you. Right now, we’re looking for a
good, really confi dent presenter. Ready?
Linda: OK.
Nina: Good luck!
Linda: I get up every day at half past seven. I
always have a shower, then I get dressed. At
eight o’clock, I have my breakfast. I always
have toast. I sometimes have cereal, too.
And a cup of tea . . .
Nina: What do you do in your free time?
Mark: In my free time? What free time? I’m busy,
busy, busy. I listen to music, I watch DVDs,
I surf the net, I play computer games, I chat
on the phone, I hang out with my friends.
We play music, we go to the internet café,
we go to the cinema, we go shopping, we
go to gigs . . .
Kirsty: I play netball every Monday. On Tuesdays,
I practise the violin. On Wednesdays, I play
hockey. On Thursdays, I go to art club.
On Fridays, I have riding lessons. On
Saturdays . . .
Nathan: Nice biscuits . . . Mmmm . . . Can I have
another one?
Fran: My dream job? That’s a good question. Let’s
see . . . A hairdresser. No, no . . . maybe a
chef? Maybe a musician. No, wait! I really
want to be a dentist. A dentist . . . Maybe a
teacher? Wow. That’s a good question . . .
Trish: Whatever.
Nina: ’Bye!
Simon: [imitating British accent] “Whatever . . .” Is
that it?
Nina: Where’s Rachel?
Rachel: Hello!

Scene 4
Rachel: Right. I’m Rachel. And I, um . . . want to be on
TV. Oops . . . Sorry . . . What’s the question?
Nina: What do you do in your free time?
Rachel: Acting. I act in school plays.
Nina: What play are you doing at the moment?
Rachel: Oh . . . um . . . nothing right now. I’m a bit,
um . . . I love TV! I watch it . . . a lot. My dream
job is to be a TV presenter. I also . . . oh!
Nina: Whose phone is that? Simon, is that your
phone?
Simon: No, is it yours?
Rachel: It’s mine! Sorry . . . Hello . . .? I can’t talk right
now, I’m doing an audition . . . What?. . . Oh
no . . . I’m coming . . . , I’m coming right now.
OK, bye. Sorry. That’s my . . . Sorry.
Scene 5
Simon: Nathan?
Nina: No! What about . . .? No . . . What do we do?
Harry: Sorry! My ball . . . What are you doing?
Nina: Sorry?
Harry: The camera?
Nina: Oh, yeah. We’re making a TV program. We’re
looking for a presenter.
Harry: Cool. Right. Um . . . Can I try?
Nina: OK. Why not?
Harry: My dream job? I have no idea. I’m only
fi fteen. Do I want to be a footballer? Yes!
Do I want to be an actor, a big fi lm star?
Yes again! Do I want to be a musician, in a
rock band? Of course! But am I brilliant at
football? Am I an amazing actor? Can I sing
or play music? No, no, and defi nitely no.
What about TV? Do I want to be a presenter?
I don’t know. I’m talking to you right now, but
I don’t know what to say. My name’s Harry,
by the way . . . Well?
Rachel: Hi. Again.
Simon: Hi.
Rachel: Look, I’m really, really sorry about the phone,
and everything. It’s . . . Anyway, look, can you
give me another chance? Please? I really,
really want to be your presenter. Please!
Harry: Hi. I’m Harry.
Rachel: Hi.
Nina: Yes, Harry is . . . well, actually, Harry’s our
new presenter.
Rachel: Your what?
Nina: Sorry, Rachel.
Rachel: Oh. That’s OK. Well done!
Harry: Thanks.
Rachel: That’s great.
EPISODE 2
Nina: Hi, I’m Nina. That’s me. And that’s my
friend, Simon. We’re making a TV program
for a competition. It’s about the city we live
in—London. We have only one week to make
it. I’m the director. That’s Harry, he’s our new
presenter. And that’s Rachel. She’s . . . well,
why don’t you watch . . .?
Scene 1
Harry: So your dad works here?
Simon: Yeah. He’s a TV director.
Harry: It’s great that he can show us round.
Simon: I know! He’s usually really busy.
Harry: What’s she doing here?
Simon: Who?
Harry: Rachel. Why is she with Nina? I’m the
presenter, not her!
Simon: Relax. She’s our production assistant.
Harry: Our what?
Simon: Production assistant. She’s going to help us
make the program. It’s a really important job.
Harry: More important than the presenter?
Rachel: Hi!
Harry: Hi.
Simon: Hi Dad.
Dad: Hi. Is everyone ready? Follow me. And don’t
touch anything!
Nina: Is it all right if we ask questions?
Dad: Sure. But not a lot of questions. I have only
30 minutes. This way!

Dad: This is the production offi ce. We plan the
programs here.
Nina: It’s just like a normal offi ce.
Dad: This way!
Dad: This is the control room. The director sits here.
Rachel: Wow! There are a lot of buttons. What’s this
one?
Dad: Don’t touch it!
Rachel: Sorry.
Simon: You shouldn’t touch, Rachel. All these cost
a lot of money.
Harry: How much money?
Dad: A lot. Come on.
Harry: Wow—a real TV studio.
Dad: Why don’t you walk around?
Harry: Is it all right if I go on the set?
OK, hello and welcome to . . . The Sports
Programme! Today, we’re going to show
you all your favourite sports – like football,
rugby, basketball, boxing . . .
Rachel: What about swimming?
Harry: And swimming!
Dad: This is the editing room.
Harry: Who’s going to edit our programme?
Simon: Me! I’m going to use my laptop.
Harry: Cool.
Dad: OK, almost fi nished. Any questions?
Scene 2
Harry: Listen, Simon’s dad is brilliant, right?
Nina: Yes.
Harry: And he’s a TV director?
Rachel: So?
Harry: So why don’t we ask him to help us? We
can use the studio here, the editing suite.
Just think about it!
Rachel: Isn’t that cheating?
Harry: No! We’re just asking him to help us.
Nina: That is cheating.
Harry: OK, maybe a little bit. We want to win the
competition, don’t we?
Nina: Of course. But we’re going to win without
any help.
Harry: Yes, but . . .
Nina: No.
Scene 3
Nina: OK. Let’s start. You all know your jobs?
Harry: Presenter.
Simon: Cameraman and editor.
Rachel: Production Assistant.
Nina: And I’m the director and producer.
Harry: The big boss!
Nina: And don’t forget it. Now remember—our
program is about “My City.”
Simon: London.
Nina: London. And we have to fi nish it by the
end of the week, Friday at 6 o’clock. So we
need some ideas. What should we do?
Simon: Movies! Why don’t we go to one of the big
theaters in Leicester Square? And we can
review the number one movie in London
right now.
Nina: Good idea. Rachel?
Rachel: Um. How about looking round a typical
London house? We can look in the kitchen,
the living room . . .
Harry: The bathroom, the bedroom . . .
Simon: Look in all the closets . . .
Harry: I love looking on people’s bookshelves!
Nina: OK. What about your house, Rachel?
Rachel: Oh . . . I’m not sure.
Nina: Why not?
Rachel: I’m just not . . . Sorry.
Nina: Oh, OK.
Harry: I’ve got an idea—football. We can go to
Wembley Stadium.
Nina: Boring!
Harry: What’s your big idea then?
Nina: Food. We can visit London’s different
restaurants . . . Chinese, Indian, Thai . . .
Harry: Boring!
Nina: People love eating.
Harry: They love watching sports.
Nina: Which do you prefer—food . . . ?
Harry: Or sports?
Rachel: Um . . . both?
38 Copyright © 2011 by Pearson Education, Inc. Permission granted to reproduce for classroom use.
Simon: Exactly. Let’s try both ideas.
Nina: OK.
Harry: Fine with me.
Simon: Now one more question—how are we going
to start the program?
Harry: I know! I know! Sarah.
Nina: Sarah?
Harry: She’s my sister’s best friend. She works
right in the center of London.
Simon: And . . . ?
Harry: And she works in this fantastic building—it’s
really tall—the view from the top is amazing,
the best in London.
Rachel: Better than the London Eye?
Harry: Much better! Let’s fi lm up there. For the
start of our program.
Simon: Sounds good.
Rachel: Why don’t I ring her to arrange the visit?
Harry: You?
Rachel: I am the Production Assistant.
Harry: OK. Thanks. Here—this is her number.
Nina: Rachel, can you arrange a visit for tomorrow
morning? Ten o’clock?
Rachel: Sure.
Nina: Great! There’s a lot to do before
tomorrow. Harry—you’re going to write an
introduction, something about London.
Harry: Great!
Nina: Rachel?
Rachel: Oh no!
Nina: What’s the matter?
Rachel: I’ve got to go!
Nina: But we’re almost fi nished. Can’t you stay a
bit longer?
Rachel: I can’t, I’m sorry. I really must . . . right now.
Harry: Wait! Sarah’s number . . .
Rachel: Sorry . . .
Simon: So, do you think Rachel is OK?
Harry: Boyfriend trouble?
Simon: Maybe.
Nina: Come on. There’s a lot to do . . .
EPISODE 3
Nina: Hi, I’m Nina. We’re making a TV program
for a competition. It’s about the city we
live in—London. We have only one week
to make it! I’m the director. Simon’s the
cameraman. Harry’s our TV presenter.
And Rachel’s our production assistant.
Yesterday Simon’s dad showed us around
a TV studio. Then we went to a café. We
were talking about our ideas—when Rachel
left early. I hope she’s OK . . .
Scene 1
Simon: Can you take care of the tapes for me?
Rachel: Of course.
Simon: When I fi nish a tape, could you keep it, and
give me a new one?
Rachel: Sure. This is really exciting! I can’t wait to
start fi lming.
Harry: Rachel. We haven’t got an appointment.
Rachel: What?
Harry: Did you phone Sarah, my sister’s friend?
Rachel: I spoke to her yesterday, we arranged an
appointment. She said that was fi ne.
Nina: Are you sure?
Rachel: Of course I’m sure. Let me ask. Excuse me?
Receptionist: Yes?
Rachel: I think there’s a mistake. I made an
appointment with Sarah Matthews for ten
o’clock. I spoke to her yesterday afternoon.
Receptionist: There’s nothing in the diary. Wait. There
is something. Ten o’clock . . .
Rachel: I told you!
Receptionist: For tomorrow morning.
Harry: Tomorrow? You arranged it for the wrong
day!
Rachel: Oh.
Nina: Rachel . . .
Rachel: I’m sorry. I was really busy yesterday.
Nina: So what are we going to do?
Simon: Why don’t you call her? And explain the
problem?
Harry: Me? Right now? OK. Excuse me? Can I
speak to Sarah?
Receptionist: Sure.
Harry: Hi. Sarah?

Scene 2
Simon: Good job!
Harry: Thanks. Sarah was fi ne about it.
Rachel: Sorry. Again.
Nina: Don’t worry.
Harry: OK. Here we are. The view from the top . . .
Harry: Good, eh?
Rachel: It’s perfect.
Nina: What a great idea, Harry.
Harry: I’m king of the world!
Nina: OK, guys. Let’s shoot our introduction!
Simon?
Simon: Almost ready.
Nina: Harry? Do you know what you’re going to
say?
Harry: Every word.
Harry: Up here, it’s nice and peaceful. But down
there is one of the busiest cities in the
world . . . London. Red buses, black taxis.
Over there, the Houses of Parliament,
with Big Ben. The River Thames, running
through the heart of the city . . . And there,
the famous, fantastic London Eye. This is
my city. This is London.
Nina: Good job, Harry.
Harry: How was I?
Simon: Very professional!
Harry: Thanks guys.
Rachel: Do you need a new tape?
Simon: No, this one’s fi ne. Thanks.
Harry: What’s next?
Nina: It’s time for Simon’s idea. London’s number
one fi lm.
Simon: Fantastic. That means . . .
Rachel: Leicester Square?
Simon: Leicester Square . . .
Scene 3
Simon: So, what’s the number one movie in
London right now?
Harry: I hope it’s an action fi lm!
Nina: No.
Harry: A spy fi lm? A thriller?
Nina: No.
Harry: Is it a horror fi lm? Science-fi ction?
Nina: No, it’s called Love Sick—it’s a romance!
Harry: Ugh.
Nina: It’s a comedy, too.
Rachel: I think that sounds great.
Simon: Me, too.
Harry: Can’t we see London’s number two fi lm?
Nina: No! Come on.
Simon: And you can buy the tickets, Harry.
Harry: What?!
Harry: Hi, can we have four tickets for Love Sick
please?
Cashier: Sorry, what did you say?
Harry: Four for Love Sick.
Cashier: Which performance?
Harry: The 12:30. Thanks.
Simon: I bought you some popcorn.
Scene 4
Harry: Here we are in Leicester Square. Most of
London’s biggest cinemas are here. And
what’s the most popular fi lm in London
right now? Love Sick, a romantic comedy.
It’s about a boy and a girl who really like
each other. Then they move to New York,
where things go wrong. He takes her to
dinner and makes her sick. And she takes
him to the zoo where a monkey bites him. It
was really funny. I was sitting there, eating
my popcorn, when I suddenly thought—
Rachel: Oh no! Sorry!
Harry: Rachel?!
Nina: Cut!

Harry: What are you doing?
Rachel: Hang on . . .
Harry: What’s she . . . ? She ruined my fi lm review!
I was doing really well, when she ruined it.
Nina: She didn’t mean to.
Harry: Is she trying to ruin the program on
purpose? She wanted to be presenter,
didn’t she? Maybe she’s jealous?
Simon: That’s silly.
Harry: Is it?
Rachel: Listen, I’ve got to go.
Harry: You see!
Rachel: I’m sorry.
Harry: What’s your problem, Rachel? What’s
going on?
Rachel: My life is really diffi cult right now.
Harry: How?
Rachel: It’s . . . I can’t say.
Harry: You can’t say?
Rachel: Please, believe me.
Harry: Not again!
Rachel: Listen. I really must go. Right now.
Nina: But we’re still fi lming!
Rachel: I’m sorry . . .
Harry: I told you!
Nina: What was that about?
Harry: Who cares? We need to fi lm my bit again . . .
EPISODE 4
Nina: Hi, I’m Nina. And that’s Simon, Harry, and
Rachel. We’re making a TV program for
a competition. It’s about the city we live
in—London. We have one week to make it.
Yesterday we had a great start . . . Then we
went to Leicester Square to review a movie.
But while we were fi lming, Rachel’s phone
rang and Harry wasn’t happy. And now
there are only two days to go!
Scene 1
Nina: OK everyone. Tomorrow, at 6 P.M., is the
deadline for the competition.
Simon: Ah—fi nished. Can you pass me another
tape?
Nina: Can that wait, Simon?
Simon: Sorry, no.
Nina: The two ideas for today are “London
fashion” and “London food.”
Harry: What’s “London fashion”?
Nina: We’re going into the West End. We’re
fi lming some young people and looking at
what they’re wearing.
Harry: What about me? What am I doing?
Nina: You’re doing the voice-over. You’re talking
about their clothes, you know, what they
look like.
Harry: OK. Easy.
Nina: And then, we’re all having lunch at a
fantastic Indian restaurant.
Harry: They do great food!
Nina: And Harry’s talking about all the different
types of food you can eat in London—while
he’s eating!
Simon: What time are we having lunch?
Nina: I’m not sure—one o’clock? Two? Rachel?
Rachel: Um . . .
Nina: What’s the matter?
Rachel: I forgot to book a table.
Harry: Rachel!
Rachel: It’s OK, it’s OK. I can book it now.
Harry: Not again.
Nina: Don’t worry. She’s fi ne.
Scene 2
Harry: Are you ready, Simon? OK. Let’s start. This
is “London Fashion.”
London is Britain’s fashion capital. And
what are young people wearing right now?
Let’s fi nd out . . . Not in the shops, but on
the streets! Pink’s a popular color. And she’s
wearing a great scarf. And look at her. She’s
wearing a big belt. He’s wearing jeans and
a cool T-shirt. I love those sunglasses. And
she’s got interesting hair, too! And she’s
wearing a very pretty dress. If you’re tall or
short . . . if you’re fat or thin . . . young or
old, blonde or dark . . . it doesn’t matter.
Wear what you like. Be what you like. This is
London.

Scene 3
Harry: What are you going to have for lunch?
Nina: Well, I was thinking . . .
Harry: I’m going to have chicken curry.
Nina: I’d like vegetable curry.
Harry: With rice or bread?
Nina: Rice. What about you?
Harry: Rice . . . no, bread. No, rice, defi nitely rice!
Nina: Look! There it is!
Rachel: Hello.
Waiter: Hello.
Rachel: We’ve booked a table for four people. My
name’s Rachel Farmer.
Waiter: I’m sorry, Miss. You’re too late.
Rachel: But I booked it for two o’clock. It’s two
o’clock now.
Waiter: No, no. You booked it for one o’clock.
See . . .
Rachel: I’m sure I said two. I said two on the phone.
Can we still get a table?
Waiter: I’m sorry, Miss. We’re completely full.
Rachel: It wasn’t me this time. I said two o’clock.
I’m sure I did.
Nina: This is the third time, Rachel. What’s
wrong?
Rachel: Nothing’s wrong. It just wasn’t my fault.
Harry: This is too important to mess up.
Rachel: But I didn’t.
Nina: OK. Let’s forget lunch.
Harry: Forget lunch?
Nina: Let’s forget about food all together. We
need a new idea and fast.
Simon: I know what we could do . . .
Scene 4
Nina: Let’s start over there. Harry?
Harry: Perfect.
Simon: Can you take care of the laptop again?
Rachel: Sure.
Simon: Thanks.
Nina: Come on, Rachel!
Rachel: I’m coming!
Harry: When you say “London,” most people
think of places like this. The Houses of
Parliament. And of course . . .
Harry: Big Ben . . .
Harry: The amazing London Eye . . .
Harry: Or Buckingham Palace . . .
Harry: But there’s more to London than these
famous sights. There are places like Covent
Garden, with its cafés, shops, and
buskers . . .
Harry: Or the South Bank, where you can
skateboard . . .
Harry: Amazing art galleries like the Tate
Modern . . .
Harry: Museums like the Natural History
Museum . . .
Harry: And don’t forget Hyde Park!
Scene 5
Harry: I am exhausted!
Nina: Me, too.
Simon: Can you hand me the laptop? Thanks.
What’s this?
Rachel: It’s my water. But it wasn’t empty . . . Oh no.
Nina: What is it? Simon?
Simon: Come on, come on . . .
Harry: Is it working?
Simon: Nope. It’s broken.
Rachel: It can’t be.
Simon: This is a nightmare. We can’t fi nish the
program.
Harry: I don’t understand?
Simon: I was editing it all on here. All our work.
Rachel: I’m sorry . . .
Simon: Don’t say it!
Rachel: Simon, wait!

EPISODE 5
Nina: Hi, I’m Nina. And that’s Simon, Harry, and
Rachel. We’re making a TV program for
a competition. It’s about the city we live
in—London. We have one week to make it.
But we don’t have much time—today’s the
last day. Yesterday, our laptop broke—with
all our work on it. What a disaster!
Scene 1
Dad: I’m off to work . . . Haven’t you fi xed that yet?
Simon: I’ve tried and I’ve tried. I don’t know what to
do.
Dad: When’s the deadline for the competition?
Simon: 6 P.M.
Dad: Today?
Simon: Today.
Dad: In that case, move over.
Scene 2
Nina: Who are you listening to?
Harry: Green Day.
Nina: It’s a bit . . . heavy metal?
Harry: It’s not heavy metal!
Nina: It’s not right. Not for the start of the show.
Harry: Have you found anything yet?
Nina: Nothing.
Harry: Where have you looked?
Nina: Classical. Then jazz.
Harry: Jazz? It’s for old people.
Nina: No, it isn’t!
Harry: How about some hip-hop?
Nina: I don’t think so.
Harry: OK. What about . . . country and western?
Listen, let’s forget it.
Nina: Why?
Harry: Even if we fi nd the right music, there’ll be no
point.
Nina: Yes, there will.
Harry: No, there won’t. If Simon’s laptop is broken,
we won’t fi nish the show.
Nina: But I think Simon will fi x it. I’m sure he will.
And if he fi xes it, we’ll need some music. So
hurry up!
Harry: OK, OK. How about some soul?
Nina: Great idea.
Scene 3
Simon: Is it OK? Is it working?
Dad: Well, the keyboard’s working.
Simon: That’s good.
Dad: And the screen.
Simon: What about the software—the editing
software?
Dad: I’m trying to open it. It will take a few
minutes. How did it break?
Simon: It was Rachel. She was taking care of it.
Dad: And . . . ?
Simon: And she had a bottle of water, she put it in
the laptop bag. And the water went
everywhere . . . How stupid!
Dad: Where is she now? Didn’t she want to help
fi x it?
Simon: And, she offered to help. But . . . I didn’t
want her to.
Dad: But it was an accident, wasn’t it?
Simon: I suppose.
Scene 4
Nina: Hi.
Simon: Hi. So, there’s good news. And there’s bad
news.
Harry: What’s the bad news?
Simon: I haven’t fi xed the laptop. We’ve lost all the
work I had on there.
Nina: What’s the good news . . . ?
Simon: I’ll show you.
Simon: Ta-dah!
Harry: Wow.
Nina: Where did you get that?
Simon: It’s my dad’s. He said we could borrow it.
Harry: And if we break it . . . ?
Simon: He’ll kill us.
Nina: But what about all our work? The scenes
we’ve already fi lmed? They’re not on that
laptop, are they?
Simon: No. But we just need the tapes.
Harry: That’s brilliant!
43Copyright © 2011 by Pearson Education, Inc. Permission granted to reproduce for classroom use.
Simon: But there’s one small problem.
Nina: What?
Simon: Rachel has the tapes.
Harry: Ah.
Nina: Who’s going to call her?
Simon: I will.
Scene 5
Rachel: Hello? Hi, Simon, that’s OK . . . I’m sorry,
too, I feel awful about it. You’ve what? How
nice of him . . . Yeah, I’ve got them. They’re
here in my room . . . Of course! I’ll come
over right now, I’ll be about fi fteen minutes.
OK, bye!
Rachel’s Mom: Rachel!
Rachel: What is it, Mum?
Mom: Rachel! Quick!
Rachel: I’m coming.
Simon: It’s her voicemail again . . . Rachel? Where
are you? It’s been an hour. We’re really
worried. Please call us.
Harry: We’ve already left two messages. Why
hasn’t she phoned us?
Nina: Why hasn’t she arrived yet?
Harry: And she broke your laptop.
Simon: Maybe it’s not her fault? Maybe something’s
wrong?
Nina: Is she hiding something?
Simon: Are you OK?
Rachel: I’m so, so sorry.
Harry: Don’t worry about that. Have you got the
tapes?
Simon: Is this a joke?
Rachel: What?
Nina: Where are the tapes?
Rachel: It’s the wrong bag. The other one’s in my
room.
Harry: Rachel!
Rachel: I’ll go home, right now! I’ll be really quick.
Nina: Don’t bother.
Rachel: What?
Nina: You know what I think? You’re jealous of
Harry!
Harry: I told you!
Nina: You’ve never wanted us to fi nish the show.
Thanks a lot. I hope you’re happy.
Rachel: You don’t understand.
Nina: We don’t want to know. Bye!
Well. That’s it.
Harry: We won’t see her again.
Simon: Are you forgetting something?
Nina: What?
Simon: We still need the tapes. And they’re at
Rachel’s house. If we don’t get the tapes,
we won’t fi nish the show.
Harry: So what? I don’t care about the show any
more.
Simon: I do! What about you, Nina? Do you want
to give up? After all the work we’ve done?
Well? What do you want to do?
EPISODE 6
Nina: Hi, I’m Nina. And that’s Simon, Harry, and
Rachel. We’re making a TV program for
a competition. It’s about the city we live
in—London. We had one week to make it.
But not any more. The deadline is today—at
6 o’clock! This morning, Rachel made
another mistake, and we told her to go. But
she still has the tapes—and we need them
to fi nish our show. What should we do . . . ?
Scene 1
Nina: Maybe we should walk?
Simon: I’d rather take the bus. It’s quicker.
Harry: I’d rather stay here.
Nina: We have to go to Rachel’s.
Harry: There’s no point. She’s ruined the show.
Nina: So you’d rather give up?
Harry: No, but . . .
Nina: Exactly. That’s why we have to go. There’s
no choice.
Simon: What are we going to say to her?
Nina: What do you mean?
Simon: Well, maybe we should say we’re sorry?
Harry: Why? She forgot the tapes. She left them
at home.
Simon: I know, but . . . We were really horrible to her.

Nina: The bus. So, are you coming or not?
Harry: Do I have to?
Simon: Yes, we’re a team.
Scene 2
Nina: This is the street . . . What number is
Rachel’s house?
Simon: Ninety-four.
Nina: It must be that side.
Rachel’s Mom: Wait a minute! Hello?
Nina: Is, um, is Rachel in, please?
Mom: She’s out shopping.
Nina: Oh.
Mom: She’ll be back soon. Are you friends of
hers?
Nina: Yes. I’m Nina.
Simon: I’m Simon.
Harry: Harry. Hi.
Mom: Oh, you’re working on the TV show with
Rachel?
Nina: That’s right.
Mom: She’s told me all about you. Come in!
Nina: Are you sure? Is that OK?
Mom: Of course.
Scene 3
Mom: Would you like a cup of tea?
Nina: We’re fi ne. Thanks.
Mom: I’m sure Rachel won’t be long. She’s a great
help. She helps with the shopping, the
washing, the cleaning, the cooking . . .
Simon: We had no idea.
Mom: And this has been such a diffi cult week for
her.
Nina: Why?
Mom: Her dad’s away, on business. And her
brother, Michael, he’s got terrible fl u and a
really high temperature.
Nina: So does Rachel have to do everything?
Mom: Everything.
Harry: Ah.
Mom: She’s been so busy! And I haven’t made
it any easier, I’m sure. I’ve rung her all the
time, or texted her.
Rachel: Sorry.
Simon: It was you on the phone!
Mom: Sorry . . . she enjoys working on the TV
show. She loves it. She says how nice you
all are.
Rachel: Mum! I’m home!
Harry: Sorry, again.
Nina: We didn’t know.
Rachel: Don’t be silly. I should be sorry. I didn’t say
anything!
Nina: You’re amazing. You help your mom, you
look after your brother, and you’re working
on our TV program.
Rachel: I wasn’t a lot of help.
Simon: You were.
Rachel: Hey, I’ll get the tapes. There’s still time to
fi nish our show.
Mom: When’s the deadline?
Nina: 6 P.M.
Simon: It’s 12:30 now.
Harry: We’ll never make it.
Simon: We will—if we do it here. If we can?
Mom: Of course.
Rachel: The tapes! Oh, nice laptop.
Simon: You can help if you like.
Rachel: Are you sure that’s a good idea?
Simon: I think it’s a great idea. Come on.
Scene 4
Harry: London. Red buses, black taxis.
Nina: That’s really good.
Harry: And of course . . . Big Ben.
Rachel: I love this bit.
Nina: It’s such a great part of the show.
Harry: Sandwiches! Hey, my sports report!
Simon: One more to go . . .
Rachel: Here.
Simon: Come on, come on . . .
Harry: Here we are in Leicester Square.
Simon: What time is it?
Harry: Ten past fi ve!
Rachel: Nearly there . . .

All: 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 . . .
Simon: That’s it! It’s ready!
Harry: We’ve got half an hour.
Rachel: I’ll take it. I’ll go on my bike. It’s the quickest
way.
Nina: Be careful.
Rachel: Don’t worry, I’ll be fi ne.
Rachel: For the competition. I’m not too late!
Receptionist: You’re just in time.
Rachel: Yes!
Scene 5
Simon: I hate waiting like this.
Nina: It’s horrible. I’d rather fi nd out by phone.
Or e-mail.
Harry: No, this is much better. More exciting.
Mom: So if you win, then your program is the one
they show?
Rachel: Yes.
Mom: Harry’s right. That is exciting.
Nina: How much longer?
Simon: It should start any . . . minute . . . now.
TV Announcer: And now, the winning programme in
the “My City” competition.
Nina: That’s . . .
Harry: Our music.
Simon: It’s us!
Harry: Up here, it’s nice and peaceful. But down
there is one of the busiest cities in the
world . . . London. Red buses, black taxis.
Over there, the Houses of Parliament,
with Big Ben. The River Thames, running
through the heart of the city . . . And there,
the famous, fantastic London Eye. This is
my city. This is London.
