Greeted by a Funeral ProcessionLuke 7:11-12 ESV Soon afterward he went to a town called Nain, and

his disciples and a great crowd went with him. (12) As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her.

The gates of a 1st Century City The Jews of the day buried all except kings outside the

walls of the gates

Heb 13:12 ESV So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood.

Luke 7:11-12 ESV Soon afterward he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. (12) As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her.

This followed the healing of the Centurion’s Slave. Nain was a small village about 2 miles south of Mt. Tabor, located

originally in the tribe of Issachar, not far from Capernaum. Only time mentioned in all of the Bible. Only Luke records this event.

Great Compassion from the LordLuk 7:12-13 ESV As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a

man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. (13) And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep."

A Widow and Mom Loses Her Son (He would have been her life). A considerable crowd from the town was with her. When Jesus saw her, He had compassion on her. “Do not weep.” (klaio) to wail out loud.

bowels, hence to be moved with compassion, have compassion (for the bowels were thought to be the seat of love and pity) (Thayer)

God Has Visited His PeopleLuk 7:14-16 ESV Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers

stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." (15) And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. (16) Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"

A Dead Man sits up and speaks. The crowd glorified God! Recognized Jesus sent by God!

God Has Visited His PeopleMat 16:15-17 ESV He said to them, "But who do

you say that I am?" (16) Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." (17) And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

Joh 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
