LETTERS FROM A PASTOR TO HIS PEOPLE

For previous letters go to stjuliana.org/letters

Dear Parishioners, God can pour out his grace upon anyone. Secular authori es, professional athletes or ar sts, people of different religions can make God known.

This is what we hear in the opening of our first reading from Isaiah today. "Thus says the LORD to his anointed, Cyrus, whose right hand I grasp..." (Is 45:1). Cyrus was the Persian King. He was not Jewish. He could even have been seen as an enemy of Israel. Yet, we hear God not only speaks to Cyrus, but he considers him his anointed! Let me repeat: a pagan, non-Israelite is God's cho-sen. "I have called you by your name, giving you a tle, though you knew me not."

Why does God in the Old Testament do this? It is to show the people how great and generous he is. God can work his grace in the most unexpected of places, in the least likely of people. Keep an eye out in the world for God's presence!

We pray frequently for voca ons. Pray-er is powerful and we have here in our com-

munity fruit of that prayer. Mr. Tom Dombai, a lifelong pa-rishioner of Saint Juliana, has answered the call to become a permanent deacon in the Catholic Church! Tom and his wife Marie have been par cipa ng in the archdiocese diaco-nate program for over a year now. On October 1st, Tom was officially accepted by the bishop as a candidate for the diac-onate in what is known as the 'Rite of Candidacy.' This cere-mony was held at Mundelein Seminary, and he was one of 27 men throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago to be for-mally enrolled as deacon candidates. Tom must complete three addi onal years of discernment, educa on, and field experiences before he is ordained a deacon, which will oc-cur in May of 2020. Please keep Tom and Marie in your prayers as they con nue to answer God's call in their lives. This is a blessing for the Dombai family and for the en re St. Juliana parish family. We are proud of you, Tom, and look forward to the day when you will assist us at the altar as a deacon!

Yesterday, October 21st, we celebrated the funeral Mass of Mr. William Schaul. Bill was our parish and school's long-

me director of maintenance. Born and raised at St. Juliana, and a ending St. Juliana School, Bill loved and was truly dedicated to our parish. He was handy and a genuine cra s-man. Our prayers and condolences go out to Bill's family. His memory will live on in the campus of St. Juliana. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.

Also yesterday, at the 5pm Mass, we dedicated two statues, one of Mary and the other of Joseph, that were donated to our parish by Mr. Vito Gargano, in memory of his late wife Teresa Gargano. Thank you to the Gargano family for the beau ful addi ons to our church.

This weekend is World Mission Sunday. Envelopes for this collec on are in the back of the Church. Proceeds go to support the Missionary work of the Catholic Church. Thank you for your generosity.

The Tuesday Night Theology session this week, at 7pm in the Ministry Center Chapel, will be on the parables of Je-sus. All are invited. Yours in Christ, Fr. James

The musical composi on known as the fugue, from the La n 'fugare' meaning 'to chase', is centered around one or two themes. These themes are repeated throughout the piece, but as the piece progresses, the themes, while maintaining their fundamental structure, become more elaborate. More voices and pitches enter the composi on, mimicking the basic theme, though with slightly altered elements. This middle sec on of the fugue is referred to as the 'development.' The overall piece never strays from the source, yet is always evolving so as not to remain repe ve. It is almost as if the main theme is chasing the subsequent episodes. Or, it could be seen that the episodes are running away from the main theme. Fugue also derives from 'fugere' in La n, meaning 'to flee.' The conclusion of the fugue, typically called the 'final entry' or some mes the 'recapitula on,' contains a return to the tonic key of the main theme.

Perhaps the most famous fugue ever composed, so popular this me of year, is Johann Sebas an Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. Bach's Fugue in G Minor is another one of my favorites. Pachelbel's Canon in D is yet another piece to which you could listen for a further illustra on, though you have probably heard it if you were recently at a wedding.

Repe on amidst development is the fugal concept to be applied spiritually, and Mary is our tonic key. Mary's total surrender to God is the main theme. Our subsequent acts of trust in God, in imita on of her, are the development of the subject. And in the end our bodies will be reunited to our souls in bea tude, as hers is now, comple ng the beau ful piece. Rev. James Wallace

TASSEL OF THE CLOAK

THE

CHRIST IN CHICAGO REFLECTIONS FROM ST. JULIANA PARISHIONERS

In 1956, my Dad and Mom moved our family from Queen of Angels to St. Juliana. As my three brothers, one sister and I made our way through St. Juliana School, there were as many as 1300 students (with no pre-school). There were over 20 Franciscan Sisters. Even with that large student popula on, there was one football team, one basketball team and one hardball team. Girls could cheerlead in 7th and 8th grade. Only boys could act as altar servers. Only men could serve as lectors/commentators. Obviously, many things have changed in the Parish over the last 61 years, largely for the be er, par cularly the inclusion of girls/women and the increased involvement of laity.

I was asked to speak at our 8th Grade gradua on breakfast. I remember thanking the Pastor, the nuns, teachers and the parish, for the educa on of our minds and forma on of our faith, in the context of which I noted for my classmates that the values we held as young adults would be values we held throughout our lives. I think I was right (that may have been the last me). Some simple lessons long ago drilled into my consciousness by mentors including the good Sisters, remain the cornerstones of my spiritual life, which for me includes service to the parish/school community:

. . . . “Pray” in some fashion every day. . . . . Do not be a bully. . . . . Watch out for the bullied. . . . .Give of your me and talent for the benefit of

others.

One of my mentors was the great Joe Roddy. He explained a good life and avoidance of sin in these simplest terms: “don’t screw over anybody”; and, “even if you possess the power to do so, never go out of your way to hurt anybody”. In its own way, this is a summa on of Christ’s message, and a beau ful philosophy. Because we do not possess the ability to experience God in a physical sense, we experience God through our fellow women and men. I am grateful for St. Juliana Parish which has been the center of my faith life.

Tom Draths, a lawyer, has been a parishioner of St. Juliana for over 60 years, and he and his wife Cathy have raised here their three children: John William, Tom, and Mary Frances.

YOUR WORSHIP AID

CONFITEOR

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (strike breast) through my fault, through my fault, through my most griev-ous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

GLORIA

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Be-go en Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Fa-ther, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

SUNDAY

READING I: ISAIAH 45:1,4-7

Thus says the LORD to his anointed, Cyrus, whose right hand I grasp, subduing na ons before him, and making kings run in his service, opening doors before him and leaving the gates unbarred: For the sake of Jacob, my servant, of Israel, my chosen one, I have called you by your name, giving you a

tle, though you knew me not. I am the LORD and there is no other, there is no God besides me. It is I who arm you, though you know me not, so that toward the rising and the se ng of the sun people may know that there is none besides me.

READING 2: THESSALONIANS 1:1-5B

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: grace to you and peace. We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers, unceasingly calling to mind your work of faith and labor of love and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father, knowing, brothers and sisters loved by God, how you were chosen. For our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with much convic on.

In the first reading, something extraordinary happens. God has chosen a pagan king to defeat the enemies of Israel and return the exiles to their homeland. The prophet calls king Cyrus “God’s anointed,” which means “messiah.” Some Bible scholars think that most likely this prophecy brought Isaiah to martyrdom. For the next five weeks, the second reading will be from Paul’s first le er to the Thessalonians. The tone of the book is warm, tender and posi ve. Paul obviously has great affec on for this par cular Chris an community. In today’s Gospel, the Pharisees seek to trap Jesus in his teachings. The ques on is asked to see whether he de-clares himself on the side of those who oppose paying taxes to the Romans (the Pharisees), or on the side of those who collaborate with the Romans (the Herodians). If Jesus concedes to the payment of taxes to Caesar, he loses the esteem of ordinary Jews who very much resent the payment of taxes to the Romans. On the oth-er hand, if he opposes it, he could be accused of ins ga ng rebellion against the Romans. We know Jesus’s response: “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”

GOSPEL: MATTHEW 22: 15-21

The Pharisees went off and plo ed how they might entrap Jesus in speech.

They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone's opinion, for you do not regard a person's status. Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?"

Knowing their malice, Jesus said, "Why are you tes ng me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax."

Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, "Whose image is this and

whose inscrip on?" They replied, "Caesar's." At that he said to them, "Then repay to

Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God."

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Bego en Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, bego en, not made, consubstan al with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salva on He came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pon us Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Bap sm for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrec on of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

WORSHIP AID FOR CHILDREN

DEAR CHILDREN & PARENTS We are so happy you are here at Saint Juliana for Mass! We encourage you to sit up in the front pews so you can see what is happening. Also feel free to sit up in the balcony. Parents, don’t worry if you come in late or need to go to the back for a meout, and especially don’t worry if you make noise during the service. Your presence adds so much to our community. Children, feel free to use this page to color during Mass and take home with you. We hope your family experiences Jesus!
