The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission on Monday launched e seva centres for online certificate verification. Candidates who have passed various exams conducted by TNPSC can upload their certificates for verifications through 209 e seva centres in Chennai. They should pay Rs 5 for scanning per sheet.

Chennai collector who launched the online procedure said the same will be adopted in the future so that the candidates need not go to TNPSC main office for cer-tificate verification.

Four years after the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion announced grandiose plans to open the city’s first flea market – as part of the Amma brand of products and services – in Mogap-pair East, residents are still awaiting any visible prog-ress on the civic body’s promise.

In October 2014, at the

meeting of the Greater Chennai Corporation Council, the then Mayor of Chennai Saidai Duraisamy had announced that an Amma weekly flea market will be established in Mogappair East. The flea market was to function on weekends. He had said that the flea market would offer more than 600 varieties of products at subsidised rates and an assortment of prod-

ucts ranging from shoes, clothes, furniture to jewel-lery and sarees would be sold at reasonable prices at the location.

“I remember that the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion had even said that the Tamil Nadu Housing Board had handed over a vacant land measuring to an extent of 3.94 acres for the purpose of establishing the Amma flea market

along with an Amma cin-ema theatre where tickets would be priced at below Rs 25 per patron. It was to benefit at least 10,000 fam-ilies living in Mogappair East, Mogappair West and its surroundings. But after the announcement nothing much has moved,This is sad” said Kumaraguru, a middle-class resident of Mogappair East, who was eagerly looking forward to the opening of the flea market. Chennai as a whole does not have prop-er flea markets though many shops function at Moore Market, Broadway,

T Nagar and Pallavaram (weekly shandy). “In that sense, I must say that the Amma flea market is the need of the day. I have lived in Mumbai where you have a flea market and in Delhi you have the Chor Bazaar (Thief Market, a euphe-mism for the availability of some stolen goods) that is set up in Chandini Chowk every Sunday where you can find a whole range of knick knacks and house-hold and personal items at cheap rates. I hope the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion takes some steps to revive this concept of

Amma flea market and operationalises the same soon,” said Mukesh, a north Indian, who had settled in Chennai five years ago and is now a resident of Mogappair West.

When contacted an of-ficial of the Greater Chen-nai Corporation’s Ambat-tur Zone under whose ju-risdiction Mogappair falls, said any further steps on setting up the flea market could be taken only after an elected council is in place. For that the local body elections must be con-ducted first.

Now unreserved tickets at five stations in Tamil Nadu including Chennai Central have journey de-tails printed in Tamil, apart from Hindi and English. The system has been introduced at Chennai Cen-

tral, Egmore, Trichy, Salem and Madurai stations. The tickets issued at Thiruvananthapuram, Er-nakulam, Palakkad and Kozhikode will have journey details printed in Malayalam, Southern Railway sources said. One counter at each station has been earmarked for this purpose.

This is a trial measure intro-duced by Southern Railway for the benefit of lakhs of commuters who don’t know Hindi or English.

One of the pillars of the Anna Nagar Flyover on the

100 Feet Road that passes through Thirumangalam has been used by members of a voluntary organisation to send across a colourful and pleasing awareness message to the people on autism.

The pillar near the Thi-rumangalam-Ambattur Industrial Estate Road Junction has been painted with colourful images of palm prints with the mes-sage ‘Support Autism’ written on it. However, there is no information on which voluntary group had turned the pillar colourful.

Inquiries with a traffic police personnel posted near the Thirumangalam

revealed the colourful palm prints were painted earlier this month to commemo-rate the World Autism Day, which fell on April 2 globally. “I was not aware much about autism though I have occasionally come across the term. I thought it was some kind of incur-able personality disorder. Only after coming across this pillar and reading the words ‘Support Autism’

recently I did some search-es on Google and read up about it and felt enlight-ened,” said Ashok Kumar, who identified himself as a resident of Thirumagal Colony in Anna Nagar Western Extension near Thirumangalam.

Many people passing by this stretch have spotted the difference. “I haven’t both-ered to read the message on autism because of the mov-ing traffic here. But none-theless, I find this colourful pillar far more attractive. It really stands out and I think we should in any case have more colour on our flyover walls,” said a mid-dle-aged man, who chose to remain anonymous, but appeared to care more for visual appeal than for the message that the voluntary group chose to highlight with great efforts.

Vaishnavi, a student of Masters of Social Work at a leading self-financing educational institution in Chennai, however feels that such paintings could actually help in silently spreading the message and creating a great deal of awareness on autism. “The

impact of such campaigns is usually not immediate. This would hold good for any campaign on any so-cial cause. However, over a period of time when peo-ple, who get caught in traf-

Annamalai Varsity begins online admission for UG

Annamalai University in Tam-il Nadu has commenced online admission for undergraduate and five-year integrated degree pro-grammes in various disciplines for the academic year 2018-19. The last date for submission of online application is May 31.

The university offers under-graduate programmes in the dis-ciplines of nursing, pharmacy, agriculture, horticulture, physio-therapy, occupational therapy and fisheries and five-year integrated programmes in arts, Indian lan-guages, sciences, marine sciences and education (clinical psycholo-gy). The university will select

candidates based on the marks secured by the students in the relevant subjects of the higher secondary examination conducted by the Tamil Nadu state board or any other equivalent board. The university will follow the rule of reservation of the Tamil Nadu government.

From preparing your hair to ap-plying conditioner after the wash, it is important to take note of how to do it right to get healthy hair.

PREPaRE YouR HaIR: To prepare your hair for the wash, oil it two to three hours beforehand. An oil massage opens pores and enables better absorption of oil nutrients. Oil your hair from roots to tips and don’t massage too hard. You can use coconut, mustard or olive oil and even a combination for your pre-shampooing routine.

RINSE gENTLY: Start by rinsing your hair with lukewarm water. This will remove extra oil from hair and scalp and wash off dry skin on the scalp. It will further help open the cuticles and soften the hair. When rinsing, keep in mind to not start rubbing hair immediately but wait for your hair to be soaking wet.

SHaMPoo YouR HaIR: Choosing the right shampoo is important if you

want your hair’s natural shine and moisture to stay intact. For dry and damaged hair, it’s best to opt for sulfate and paraben-free sham-poo. Whereas for thin hair, go for a volumising shampoo. In any case, avoid shampoo with syn-thetic ingredients so that your hair doesn’t get damaged. Don’t rinse off the shampoo with warm water.

aPPLY CoNDITIoNER: Hair condi-tioner is applied after you have rinsed out the shampoo com-pletely. It helps in retaining mois-ture and binding hair cuticles. Apply it evenly along the length of hair (but not the scalp). Leave it on for a minute or so and then rinse it off with cold water.

S Wash your hair with lukewarm water as hot water is bad for your hair.

S Apply a conditioning mask once a week - a hair mask can offer

deeper hydration and repair, leav-ing hair lush and shiny.

S Let your hair dry, the best way is to take a towel and wrap it around your head and soak all the extra water.

S Understand your hair type. Go to a professional if need be and find out if you have a combination scalp, an oily one or the one that is prone to dryness.

S Accordingly choose your hair products. Many people do not choose the correct shampoo and conditioner type for themselves.

S Never wash your hair daily; experts suggest washing hair at least thrice a week and oiling at least two times a week.

S Do not ignore dandruff. Use an anti-dandruff shampoo and alter-nate it with your regular shampoo till dandruff persists.

S Do not switch between brands. Using different brands may show you different results but can also damage your hair.

he road at Aslat-hamman Koi l Street in Mogap-pair is in a state of

neglect for the past many months and requires relay-ing. The Aslathamman Koil Street, named after the existence of a temple in the vicinity, is also known as the Mogappair Road or the Vellalar Street. I t connects the busy Mogappair-Thiruman-galam Road (ahead of Wavin India Ltd) with the winding road that eventu-ally leads to the Mogap-pair West Bus Depot and beyond.

Many private vehicles and share auto rickshaws ply on this road with great-er frequency on a daily basis. But the road is un-even making the ride far from a smooth experience.

Regular users of the road point out that con-tractors engaged by a civic agency last year had dug up the road but failed to relay it properly. “Instead of relaying the road with bitumen and tar, the work-ers engaged by the con-tractors simply covered the dug up portion of the road with mounds of earth and left. Now the road surface is highly uneven and at many places you have stones protruding on the road making it very diffi-cult to drive on this

stretch,” says Mohan Ran-gan, a resident of Mogap-pair West, who hits the road on a regular basis to reach the Ambattur Indus-trial Estate where he works in a private company.

Two-wheeler riders complain that they are finding it extremely diffi-cult to balance their vehi-cles while driving on the road, especially with a pillion seated. “I usually take my family on a two-wheeler on this road and find that balancing is quite tricky as the stretch is very uneven. At one place, you are on a slight elevation and the very next moment you are riding at a differ-ent surface. The road should be re-laid immedi-ately to prevent any acci-dent,” said Babu, a blue collar worker in Manur-pet, who takes this road as he is a resident of Vellalar Street.”

Elumalai, who operates a share auto rickshaw on this stretch on a regular basis, laments that he has to frequently spend on the upkeep of the vehicle due to the bad condition of the road. “Considering that we normally carry eight to 10 passengers in our ve-hicles, the uneven road causes more damage to our vehicles and the screws loosen up quite often. We are forced to visit a me-chanic quite often because of this,” he complained.
