Now midnight marches by police at AmbatturBy N Rathi Chithra

If you are one of those night owls in Ambattur, chances are that you might have noticed police person-nel on motorcycles zipping past on the streets of the neighbourhood past mid-night. Well, this is part of the “midnight marches” of midnight patrol initiative that has been introduced in the Ambattur Police Dis-trict from early this month.

Under the initiative, more than a hundred police personnel would do the rounds of the entire neigh-bourhood under the juris-diction of the Ambattur Police District, between 12 midnight and 1.30 am daily. This was introduced as a

means of “visible policing” in the area, particularly in areas prone to crimes. Not just motorcycles, you would also see policemen in patrol jeeps.

According to a police officer in Ambattur Police District, the midnight marches were revived by Deepa Satyan, the recently posted Deputy Commis-

sioner of Police (Ambat-tur). On occasions, she herself would join the mid-night rounds.

The reasons why she revived the night beat was to deter criminals on the prowl under the cover of darkness. “This would not only instill fear among the wrong doers but also in-spire confidence among the

local residents that the personnel in khaki are there to safeguard them,” said the police officer.

A police officer in Am-battur Police District claimed that there were no incidences of crime when the midnight beats are con-ducted.

The officer added that a WhatsApp group has also been created in the Ambat-tur Police District for all the beat officers to exchange messages and effectively act on any leads. “The Ambat-tur Police District is the largest in the Greater Chen-nai Police. It has 16 police stations in its jurisdiction. So such exchange of infor-mation will help in effec-tively monitoring crime,” he

added.Besides, while now po-

lice personnel on night rounds, sign registers in Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) and banks, soon in Ambattur you could see them scanning QR codes at these places on mobile phones as part of an e-beat system.

Some of the residents welcomed the initiative. “Ambattur, as a neighbour-hood is expanding. Now we have apartments coming up here. Therefore, we need effective policing and this is a good initiative, I feel,” said Harichandan, who is a resident of an apartment complex on the Chennai-Tiruvallur High Road in Ambattur.

zones of the Greater Chennai Corporation wit-nessing more number of patients with novel coro-navirus disease (COV-ID-19) infection, it is vital to know information about the COVID-19 con-tainment zones and fever camps to detect the virus in the neighbourhoods.

According to Greater Chennai Corporation of-ficials, the information about these are available at just the click of the mouse or keypad. “The website of the Greater Chennai Corporation regularly updates infor-mation about the COV-ID-19 containment zones so that outsiders can avoid stepping into those areas,” said an official of the

civic body’s Anna Nagar Zone.

Another official work-ing in the Ambattur Zone of the Greater Chennai

Corporation explained that in the weeks immedi-ately after the outbreak of the global pandemic, if a resident of a locality test-

ed positive for novel coro-navirus, then the entire street was declared a CO-VID-19 containment zone by the civic body. How-ever, that strategy has since been changed as per the protocol advised by the Tamil Nadu Govern-ment. Now if a resident tests positive for COV-ID-19 then only that par-ticular building or a por-tion of it is barricaded. Only in streets where there are high incidences of COVID-19 infection, the entire street is declared a COVID-19 containment zone, he explained.

“That is why in the earlier months, you would have seen many streets in Mogappair, Nolambur and other places being barricaded to prevent en-try of outsiders and also restrict the patients or their contacts from step-ping out. Now you don’t

Know your COVID-19 Containment Zones, Fever Camps in your neighbourhood

have such barricades in many places,” he pointed out.

“In fact, now as of Saturday there are only 11 declared COVID-19 con-tainment zones in the whole of Greater Chennai Corporation limits. Of these two are in the Anna Nagar zone – the Palani Andavar Koil Street in Anna Nagar East and Ramasamy Street. These two streets were declared

as containment zones on August 30,” he said.

These details are up-loaded on the Greater Chennai Corporation website. Likewise, the civic agency also puts out information on proposed fever clinics on a regular basis in various localities. “People with symptoms could approach these fe-ver clinics and get them-selves tested,” the official explained.

‘Hello police’ helplinestarted in Tiruvallur

The Tiruvallur district police have started ‘Hello Police’. This is a move to crack down on illegal activ-ity, including sand mining and ganja and gutkha smug-gling, with the help of information from residents. A separate number for these purpose will be operated at the control room. The number is 90033 90050.

A control room with four police personnel has been set up in the Tiruvallur SP office for Hello Police initia-tive. Five special teams that function directly under the SP would investigate the complaints received through the number instead of the local police station to main-tain secrecy and keep the informer’s details confiden-tial. They will rush to the spot and conduct a raid. If it is a false information, they will contact the caller again to verify, otherwise they won’t be disturbed.

Hyacinth,the unstoppable menace

With broad green leaves and purple flowers, water hyacinth con-

taminates water bodies, blocks the passage of sunlight and sub-sequently destroys the aquatic ecosystem. Weeding out these species permanently is a never ending process despite the use of scientific technology and study of the hydrology of water bodies.

Water hyacinth is a killer spe-

cies. Though the Greater Chen-nai Corporation claims to be re-peatedly removing these destruc-tive aquatic plants, It is supposed to be an annual affair, undertaken before the commencement of the northeast monsoon rains.

Water hyacinth is cleared when there are complaints of mosquito menace in the locality.

The reason for the growth of water hyacinth is attributed to the

sewage and grey water that is often let out into these water bod-ies. However the government should look out for long term solutions instead of resorting to temporary stop-gap measures. Only the stoppage of sewage into these water bodies can bring about a change but this does not look like happening in the new future.

The one thing the pan-demic has been unable to disrupt is the sweet taste and many have thrown caution to the wind. With more functions coming up and celebrations to follow, sweets are very much on the top of one’s mind.

In India, sweets are positively entrenched in one’s culture as happy celebration foods. It start-ed with Ganesh Chaturthi, followed by the Kerala festival Onam and the list goes on.

But one can build im-munity and maintain a fit lifestyle if they limit calo-ries and consume wisely.

Over indulgence in sweets can lead to a lot of health drawbacks. Exces-sive sugar calories can push one back on their diet/fitness regimen by adding empty calories, in the current situation main-taining one’s general fit-ness is of utmost priority. At the same time, one cannot forego sweets en-tirely as festive celebra-tions would be dull with-out them.

Nutritionists suggest ways to smartly consume sweets this festival season.

Portion control: It’s al-ways better to take small helpings of your favourite

meals and treats rather than depriving yourself of it. Monitor your portions and don’t overeat. Com-pensate when you can if you have had two helpings of laddoo’s for lunch, give it a skip during dinner.

Don’t forget to exercise: Remove a small amount of time during the day to burn the excess-calorie intake. It does not have to be a heavy session. Even light exercise is a must and should not be skipped! Even a thirty minute work-out can go a long way!

Cook smartly: Sugar and calories go hand in hand. Therefore, resorting to sugar alternatives like low calorie sweeteners is a smart way to celebrate this fest ival. Low calorie sweeteners provide sweet-ness with minimal calories and you don’t have to compromise on your crav-ing! In addition to it, low calorie sweeteners are ab-solutely safe to consume as well.

Lastly, don’t hold back on the celebrations, espe-cially with your family and loved ones. The boost of love and warmth is defi-nitely needed during try-ing times like these.

Agencies

Smart ways to keep a check on calories

The huge park sandwiched between Pari Salai and the EB Road is now open but people have not started to use it in good numbers. While the members tentatively restarted their fitness regimen, particularly walking regular users claimed that the focus was on social distancing, personal hygiene and strict adherence to safety protocols mentioned in the guidelines issued by the state. The yoga platform which was under construction is at a standstill due to the pandemic (left) while on the other side, the kids play area has been cordoned off as a precautionary measure and minor repairs are being done.

Patch up work at Annamalai AvenueThe civic authority has

started repairing of roads which were been damaged by the recent showers. Patch up work is on near the four road junction of Chanakyan Main road in Annamalai Avenue in West Mogappair. “They are only concentrating on repairing potholes and major roadworks will be undertaken only after the monsoon,” said an offi-cial. These measures will make the damaged roads at least motorable now.

Akshay Kumar:I drink cow urine every day

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar has revealed that he drinks cow urine ev-ery day for ayurvedic reasons.

The actor, who is cur-rently shooting in Scot-land for his upcoming film “BellBottom” with Huma Qureshi and Lara Dutta Bhupathi, joined British adventurer and host Bear Grylls for an Instagram Live, to talk about going on a jungle adventure with him.

When Huma asked Akshay how he convinced himself to drink elephant poop tea on the show, Akshay said: “I wasn’t

Enlarged, twisted veins commonly found on the legs are called varicose veins. Although these are not considered to be a seri-ous medical condition, they are an uncomfortable sight and are a sign of rest-less legs. Having varicose veins isn’t uncommon and yet, people are not sure of what causes them, or how they are treated.

Varicose veins are not limited to a specific gen-der, age group, or even a profession. More often, people with prolonged standing requirements fall prey to this disorder where veins of lower limbs en-large due to malfunction of their valves causing improper flow of blood, and thereby pooling. At

the point when the valves that help push oxygenated blood back to our heart are exhausted, they can quit working altogether. Feeble valves can prompt a rein-forcement of blood, mak-ing our veins twist and swell. It is what science calls varicose veins.

In other words, there is an ensuing danger for hav-ing varicose veins if you are elderly, sit or stand for long stretches, have an inert way of life, have obesity, or have a family background of varicose veins.

They are discomfort and unattractive, but vari-cose veins can also be risky to our internal health. Untreated veins can blast and cause draining or ex-

cruciating ulcers. Some-times, varicose veins may add to the advancement of blood clusters. These clots could reach the heart, causing prolonged medi-cal problems. One of the dangerous side effects of

varicose veins is that they can lead to ulcers. They frequently cause a dull ache, a substantial inclina-tion, or a pressure close to the skin. Yet, in more se-

As bars, restaurants and house parties continue to play significant roles in spreading COVID-19, some alcohol lovers feel that drinking in public is a safer alternative. Public in this context, drinkers refer to outdoor spaces such as roads, walkways or parks, or in a moving vehicle. Having a cold beer on the roadside or while driving maybe a good substitution if only it wasn’t illegal in this country. A narrow park on the roadside near the Dr Ambedkar ground is an ideal cozy spot for drinkers. A few stop their vehicles on the roadside and use the bonnet as a serving table. Yet a few

stand on the roadside have a quick knock and dispose the bottle and tumblers inside the park. Small time vendors on the roadside are unavailable after dusk and their areas are used to their advantage.

To add to their comfort a closeby restaurant serves side dishes in disposable plates. The residents have no say in this wrong do-ings but remain silent spectators. A resident had put up a board stating ‘no drinking, no smoking etc’ but this is of no use. Drink-ing among friends in open spaces — where there’s much more room to phys-ically distance — can keep people away from danger-ously crowded indoor gatherings, is a safer bet

vere cases, they can like-wise cause ulcers.

At the point when a hard, swelling vein makes a sore on your skin, a ve-nous ulcer can create. Ul-cers most normally hap-pen around your lower legs, and they can turn out to be very traumatizing ‘ and even contaminated ‘ if left untreated. In fact, the varicose veins are also linked with having too many blood clots. At the point when a lot of blood gathers in a vein, it can go on to become a clot. If that happens in a vein inside your body, it is called a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Blood clots are dangerous as they can go reach our lungs, causing a possibly lethal respiratory embolism.

While the COVID-19 lockdown has been lifted for all practical purposes and very few restrictions remain, domestic maids are still finding it difficult to get back to work in many places including the neigh-bourhoods of Mogappair and Anna Nagar.

Almost all commercial establishments and offices have started functioning in the neighbourhood since the relaxations in the novel coronavirus lockdown con-ditions. However, since the workplace of domestic maids are houses, they are encountering difficulties in returning to work to earn their livelihood.

Many res idents in Mogappair and Anna Nagar are hesitant to en-gage domestic maids fear-ing that they could be po-tential carriers of novel coronavirus disease. A section of residents, how-ever, has no such qualms, and has been allowing maids to work.

“I am healthy and have no symptoms of COV-ID-19 and want to return

Lockdown lifted but domestic maidsfind it difficult to get back to work

to work to earn income to run my family. But none of my three employers, in whose households I used to work till March, have called me back. One of them has been kind enough to pay me half my month-ly salary during all these months. She said she would call me back once the pandemic is over. The other two employers gave me full salary for April, though I did not work, but thereafter disengaged me,” said Kavita, a domestic maid in Padi Kuppam near

Mogappair East.Some employers like

Ranjini of Anna Nagar, have given partial employ-ment to domestic maids. “Earlier I would engage my maid to all household work including cooking and sweeping. But now I don’t allow her inside my house for fear of the virus spreading," she said. Some of the domestic maids said that their employers want them back but they faced opposition from residential welfare associations of gated communities.
