The Maraimalai Adi-ga la r S t ree t in Mogappair East is

badly in need of a good motorable road. The exist-ing road in Maraimalai Adigalar Street was dug up by contractors of multiple civic agencies leaving it in a shambles. Now the road is filled with large potholes, uneven surface and pro-truding stones. It is all but motorable.

According to residents, the Maraimalai Adigalar Street is a key link for resi-dents to go to the Koy-ambedu-Maduravoyal High Road via Padi Pudu Nagar and Rail Nagar Bridge. While the connect-

ing roads, which too were dug up by contractors of civic agencies, have since been re-laid, the Maraima-lai Adigalar Street alone has been left unattended by the authorities concerned much to the discomfort and chagrin of the local residents and other vehicle users.

“Simply put we do not have a road at all. What we have here is only a path-way, if you could call it that,” says a frustrated resident pointing to uneven surface. “This has been the state of affairs here for the past many, many months. We have no clue why we are being treated like sec-ond class citizens and not being given access to a

motorable road,” the resi-dent, who wished to re-main anonymous for this report, laments.

His lament is under-standable considering that people end up frequently damaging their personal vehicles – be it cars or two-wheelers – while passing through the stretch. Own-ers of cars complain that the chassis of their vehicle gets damaged when the underbelly of the car hits a large protruding stone on the surface of the road. “There is no way one can avoid the damage to the four-wheeled vehicles as however carefully you drive you are bound to run into a pothole. When the vehicle shakes, the under-

belly gets hit and conse-quently damaged. This is just one side of the prob-lem. We also are forced to check the alignment of the

wheels frequently as driv-ing on the uneven surface affects the fitting of the wheels,” complained So-laiappan, who owns a taxi

which he drives in collabo-ration with a leading app-based cab aggregator.

The residents are keep-ing their fingers crossed hoping that authorities would take notice and relay the road at the earliest.

PradeeP - athlete with immense PotentialBy Our Correspondent

When Pradeep Senthilkumar of the Velam-

mal Matriculation Higher Secondary School (west) won his first athletics med-al at the age of five, little did one know that he would some day make his school and state proud. Having started his interests in long jump, triple jump, 100m and 200m finally zeroed in on 400 and 800m. However his better staying power and endur-ance enabled him to take up 800m as his pet event. He was spotted at the right time and groomed by non other than his Physical Education Teacher Mr Prasanth, a former athlete himself with a masters degree in Physical Educa-tion. The introduction of the Reliance Youth Foun-dation of Sports in India as done a world of good for many spor tspersons.

Pradeep is one such up-coming athlete who has been benefited by the events conducted by Reli-ance. As a ninth standard student he won a bronze in the very first meet held in Mumbai. The following year in 2018 he grabbed silver in the 400 and 800m in the same event.

Moving to the 10th standard, Pradeep grew up

to become a tough com-petitor and so was his competitions too. Though he drew a blank in the 800m at the Schools Games Federation of In-dia meet in New Delhi, made amends and went on to win a silver with a per-sonal best at the South Zone Meet conducted by Acharya University, in Guntur.

Winning medals in one meet or the other became an habit for this unassum-ing lad. He was only 16 when he took part in the Junior Open Nationals (under-18 category) con-ducted by the Athletics Federation of India. He finished with a personal best timing of 1:53.6secs to take the silver. In Dec 2019 Pradeep won a bronze (400m) and silver (800m) at the SGFI Games held in Punjab.

His crowning glory was at the Khelo India, con-ducted by the Ministry of Sports as he bettered the meet record with a timing of 1:52.5secs for the gold and added one more gold by running the final leg of the 4x400 relay for Tamil Nadu. Pradeep’s father works as a a goldsmith on daily wages and mother is a typist at a school in Ayanambakkam.

This half miler is happy that he gets adequate sup-port from his school and his teachers. He is on the right track and with im-mense potential. It is only a matter of time before he sets foot on foreign soil.

damaged play equipment poses threat to children

Many of p lay e q u i p m e n t meant for use by

children at the EB Road Park in Mogappair East are in a damaged condition posing a serious threat to the safety of the young us-ers. The play equipment such as slide and see-saw were installed at the park some months after its inau-guration over two years ago. However, within a short time they have been damaged and rendered unusable or unsafe. Park users complain that lack of maintenance and supervi-sion has led to the damage in addition to poor quality of the components used in manufacturing them.

A visit to the EB Road Park, which is maintained by the Greater Chennai Corporation, showed that the seats in the see-saw are missing or badly damaged. Likewise, while the landing

edge in one of the slides has been significantly dam-aged virtually making it

unusable, in another slide large holes have emerged exposing children to the threat of getting bruised while sliding. Also, the swings are not in the best of condition.

“I usually come here to play but now I find that most of the equipment are damaged. This is very dis-appointing. One of the

slides is not usable and the other one is partially dam-aged but there is a queue of children wanting to use it. We are unable to play on the see-saw too as it does not have seats. What is the purpose of us coming to the park if we cannot play,” complains Iniya Ilamugi-lan, a seven year old class II student, who stays in an apartment close to the EB

Road Park.His mother, Nila Part-

hiban, says, “We can’t af-ford to take our children to play stations in shopping malls as it is a very expen-sive affair. The play station managers insist on us buy-ing flat tickets for Rs 1,000, which is certainly not af-fordable for middle class families like us. So we usually bring our child to

the park but here the play equipment are broken thereby posing a challenge for us.” Other parents at the park said that taking a serious view of the safety of children who visit the place, the officials of the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion must intervene and ensure that the damaged equipment are replaced at the earliest.

A canal that runs across Mogappair West was concretised sometime back. But due to unforeseen reasons the work took a longer time than expected. There was utter traffic chaos on the road leading to the West Mogappair terminus from East as one half of the road was shut. It has now been reopened which is a great relief particularly to the motorists.

Shooting in Mettukal, a small hamlet near Kotha-giri, Ramesh said the best part was in able to finish the shoot in 20 days, spread over two schedules. “The lead pair of Immaika Na-dodigal-fame Vinoth Kis-han and Ammu Abirami (her first lead role) were in no mood to let slip the huge platform, basking in the company of an ensembled gathering. Commercial ele-ments had not been thrust-ed in a script giving good leverage to RNK Manohar as the bad element. Debu-tant Sarath’s score is an apt reflection of the spirit with which the movie had been made.”

Absence of bus route numbers WORRy COMMUTERS

Commuters travelling by bus services operated by the Metropolitan Trans-port Corporation are being put to unnecessary trouble by the absence of route numbers at various bus stops in the neighbour-hoods of Anna Nagar and Mogappair.

The bus shelters, in-stalled at designated bus stops either by the Metro-politan Transport Corpora-tion (popularly MTC, which operates the bus fleet) or the Greater Chen-nai Corporation as the case may be, are supposed to have the bus route numbers prominently displayed on them.

However, of late com-muters complain that at many bus shelters they find that there is no signage showing the bus route numbers that would pass by that route or buses that would stop at the shelters. Those commuting by MTC bus for a long time recalled that the first thing that comes to mind at a bus stop is the signboards displaying the bus route numbers.

“Displaying of the bus route numbers at bus stops is the most basic require-ment. This is not some-thing that was never in

vogue. I vividly recall that even during the time the MTC was known as PTC – Pallavan Transport Cor-poration (PTC) and subse-quently as Dr Ambedkar Transport Corporation (DATC) – the bus route numbers would be promi-nently displayed at ever bus stop. This is to help com-muters identify if their route buses would pass by the stretch and stop there,” pointed out Manimaran, a resident of Anna Nagar West.

However, now at some of the bus stops there is no indication whatsoever about the bus route num-bers. This makes it difficult for commuters, not just the new comers to the neigh-bourhood but also those

who regularly commute on the route, to identify if a particular route bus would stop there. “I wonder why the bus route numbers are not prominently displayed at some bus stops. Look at this bus stop, there is no clue as to which route number buses would come here. How could people be able to plan their travel? Many are forced to depend on other commuters to know about the bus route numbers. But during after-noon or early morning times, when there are not much commuters, we suf-fer without a clue,” said Thanthoni, who was wait-ing at a bus shelter in Anna Nagar which did not have the bus route numbers dis-played anywhere.
