The Seventh Main Road in Anna Nagar has turned out to be a favourite spot for abandoning heavy
construction machinery such as concrete mixers and bulldozers on one side of the road.
A visit to the locality shows that several such
machinery and vehicles used in construction of buildings and lying of roads are gathering dust along the roadside. And from the rusting parts of
the concrete mixers and bull dozers it appears that they have been at the spot for many months.
Incidentally even bull-dozers and concrete mix-ers that are in regular use are also parked there. In-quiries reveal that some of the vehicle operators could be living in small apart-ments in the locality and therefore some of them have parked them on the roads. But there is no clue on the ownership of the abandoned machinery and bulldozers.
“These are heavy vehi-cles and therefore, occupy much space on the road. I do not live in this neigh-
bourhood but I have been passing through the Sev-enth Main Road in Anna Nagar for quite some time, while on my way back home on 13th Main Road. It baffles me as to why such expensive machinery and vehicles of heavy built have been left to rust,” says Mukul Raj, a resident of Anna Nagar.
A closer examination shows that some of these heavy vehicles are covered with a layer of dry leaves that have fallen from the trees under which they have been parked. “Actu-ally it looks like people who want to hire a con-crete mixer need not look
any further beyond the Seventh Main Road as you have so many of them lined up here. But in real-ity many of the machinery lying here are static and there are no signs of them having been put to use in the immediate past. That’s indeed strange and makes one wonder who would have a spare concrete mix-er or bulldozer with him/her,” says Selvam, who runs a petty shop in the neighbourhood.
A section of the resi-dents says there have been no complaints from any-one about these heavy duty vehicles being parked or abandoned there.
Velammal Main School students S Vishal (Std VII) won the first prize
in the National Level Science Olympiad and M Arun Kumar
(Std VIII), secured the 2nd rank in the National level Maths
Olympiad organized by National Teachers Council.
SCERT to start coaching classes for TET candidates
In a move aimed at helping candidates clear the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), the State govern-ment has decided to start coaching classes through the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). The council will prepare 2,500 students in their second year at the government-run District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) centres. The SCERT has planned to conduct TET coaching during the weekends.
The students will be selected based on their performance in their current DIET course, it is learnt.
In addition, model question papers have been uploaded on the website to enable students to write the mock examination at their own convenient time and then assess their achievement level.
Vishal, actor and President of Tamil Film Producers’ Council (TFPC) cuts the ribbon to mark the opening of V Square Sports Arena at Panneer Nagar in Mogappair on Jan 20. He is being sandwiched by actors Ajay Rathinam (right) and his son Dheeraj Vishnu Rathnam. To the extreme right is Mr S. Haridass, Managing Director, Aqua World Exports Pvt Ltd.

Pedestrians walking along the Thiruman-galam - Mogappair Road near Collector Nagar are being put to a great deal of inconvenience not just due to the absence of a footpath but also the lack of an even surface on which they could walk. This was not the case always. Over two years ago, a concrete pedestrian path existed on the stretch in Collector Nagar though it was partially encroached upon by platform vendors and some flower sellers.
However, the scene changed when contrac-tors engaged by a civic agency dug up the plat-form for laying some underground pipes. In the process, they razed the platform to the level of
the road and the footpath was never re-laid. Worse still, the dug up sidewalks were simply covered with earth in a haphazard manner de-priving pedestrians of their precious space on the side of the road. Now all that remains for the pedestrians for about a 100 metre distance is an uneven muddy surface that does not even resemble an apology of a sidewalk leading to utter frustration for those walking on the road.
"The Collector Nagar bus stop is bang here at this spot. So hundreds of people have to wait her to board a bus and they disembark at this spot. And after that they are literally left to fend for themselves in their search for a safe place to walk to the Bazaar Road or to the apartments on the same side of the road," points out Joshna,
a college going girl, who resides in a street off Bazaar Road at the beginning of the entry to Mogappair East. Office going executives like Mahadevan have another problem to contend with. "Being a sales executive, I have to be in the most presentable attire to win the confidence of my clients. But when I walk on this muddy surface to avoid being hit by speeding vehicles, I end up with dirtied shoes. Dust simply settles on my black shoes. It is quite an ordeal to avoid the uneven surface and safely walk on the road instead" he complains.
Mahadevan says he hopes the authorities concerned take these things into account and quickly begin work to lay a concrete sidewalk in the location.

It is natural for parents to protect their children from any harm, including the endless array of germs they are exposed to every day. As children grow up, they are continuously ex-posed to various germs, especially in places such as daycare centres and pre-school. Children with low immunity are highly sus-ceptible to various types of infections. The high inci-dence of infections has led to an increased and inap-
propriate use of antibiot-ics, which has further re-sulted in antimicrobial re-sistance.
Antimicrobial resis-tance, a widespread prob-lem, takes places when microbes build resistance against the medications intended to kill them due to overuse. It is one of
the world’s most press-ing public health problems. The best way to tackle this is to build a strong immu-nity, which naturally pro-
tects your child from infec-tions.
Here are a Few tips tHat Can Help Boost your CHild’s iMMunity.
HealtHy diet: A healthy diet that comprises all fundamental components like proteins, minerals, vitamins, micronutrients and unsaturated fats in optimum quantity, helps build the immunity re-quired to fight against
various infections or dis-eases in children. Citrus fruits, carrots, green leafy vegetables, beans, straw-berry, yogurt, garlic, and ginger help build immu-nity with their immunity-boosting properties.
adequate sleep: Sleep de-privation suppresses the functionality of the im-mune system, which makes children susceptible to infections. Adequate sleep is an absolute neces-
sity to rejuvenate the body. Newborns need up to 18 hours of sleep a day, tod-dlers require 12 to 13 hours, and preschoolers need about 10 hours of sleep.
Hygiene: Maintaining hand hygiene before and after each meal, after playtime, handling pets, blowing the nose, using the restroom and arriving home from daycare helps prevent in-fections in children.
HerBal solutions: Despite taking proper care, chil-dren’s immunity may be affected. Consumption of herbal dietary supplements can help children stay healthier as they help build immunity. A combination of herbs may be a safe and effective adjuvant to antimicrobials in the management of re-current infections. When co-prescribed with antibi-otics, herbs may have a role in faster recovery, reduces the duration and cost of therapy, besides preventing reinfections. Source: Internet

While many interior roads located in the neighbourhoods of Mogappair East, West and Nolambur have been laid in the past few years – notwithstanding the fact that some of them were subsequently dug up by various civic agencies – the Nolam-bur Phase II First Cross Street has been crying for attention for rather too long.
This road in the fast developing Nolambur remains as a kutcha road, unlike many other streets within its close proximity which have fairly better roads.
The Nolambur Phase II First Cross Street branches off on the left side of the Nolambur Phase II First Main Road, which is an im-portant link to Mogap-pair East and West.
Inquiries with locals revealed that one of the reasons why the First Cross Street remains in a battered state could be that there are few hous-es on this stretch. “Un-like the neighbouring roads which have a few houses – though there a r e m a n y va c a n t grounds – on either side, this one has houses built only after a stretch of about 50 metres or so. Therefore, I can only

hazard a guess that the authorities of civic agen-cies have not bothered to have a proper tar road laid on this stretch due to its under utility as of date,” felt Walter S, a resident of First Main Road in Nol-ambur.
“May be in a few years from now, houses would be constructed on the va-cant plots on either sides of the First Cross Street. And after that the au-thorities would be spurred
to act quickly and lay concrete road,” he added.
However, it is not as if the road is not used by vehicle drivers. One can actually spot cars and two-wheelers using the road on a daily basis to reach inte-rior areas.
“I am not sure if as Walter says the authorities feel that laying a road now would only have under-utility value. But in my view irrespective of how many people live on this
street, the authorities must fullfil their duty of con-structing a proper road. Otherwise, the area would look under-developed and would certainly be a deter-rent for those wanting to explore the option of con-structing a house here. Roads are a good sign of development and could attract people to consider the location more habit-able,” reasoned his friend Isaac, who stays a few houses away from his.
