Commuters in Thirumangalam are beating the heat this summer with an innovative solution. Green shades put up above the signal lights are providing relief to the commuters from the swel-tering heat of Chennai. It looks like a temporary solution but one that defi-nitely works.

Rotary club members have come forward with this idea as a special project this summer. While the Green shaded nets provide relief, some people think it’s a good ploy to stop the viola-

tors from jumping the lights. It’s a welcome move which shows that there are good samaritans in the city who care for their fellow citizens this year. This was made possible with the sup-port of the Commissioner of Police, the Traffic Police from Thiruman-galam and certainly the Rotary Club members who spent a lot of time to-wards the installation.

Chennai Metro linked to Central Station

After six years of con-struction, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) on May 25 opened two un-derground stretches, Ne-hru Park to Chennai Cen-tral and Saidapet to AG-DMS from the Chennai Egmore Metro Rail sta-tion on Friday. These two are the fourth and fifth stretches to be opened in the network.

The Masudi Bus Stop on Pari Salai in Mogappair

East is in a state of des-pair. The bus stop, which gets its name on account of its proximity to a mosque (masudi in Tam-il), is used by dozens of commuters on a daily basis to board buses ply-ing on the routes 7H, 27N and a few other

services. These buses connect the people of Mogappair East to plac-es such as Broadway and Anna Square. Besides, many people who com-mute by share auto rick-shaws also use the bus stand to board the pri-vate vehicles.

Commuters point out that the concrete roof of the bus shelter is weak with cement falling off at quite a few places expos-

ing the iron beams that lie beneath it.

“This bus shelter was constructed atleast seven years ago. It was inaugu-rated in February 2011,” says Vasuki, a commuter pointing to a plaque unveiled on the occa-sion. “But over the years there has been no proper upkeep of this facility. As a result of this, con-crete has begun to fall off every now and then bringing into sharp focus the lack of safety for commuters like us,” she adds.

A section of bus com-muters says it is not even clear as to who is in charge of maintaining the bus shelter. “In Chen-nai city if you notice some bus shelters have been put up by the Met-ropolitan Transport Cor-poration (MTC), which operates the city’s bus fleet, while some of the bus shelters have been

constructed and main-tained by the Greater Chennai Corporation. In the latter case, some of the bus shelters have been constructed by erst-while Chennai Corpora-tion Councillors using a part of their local ward development fund. But in the case of the Masudi Bus Stand, we do not know if it was construct-ed by any of these two agencies. In any case, it needs urgent upkeep,” says Basheer Ahmed, a resident of Mogappair East and a regular bus commuter.

“I was once standing at the bus shelter when suddenly some concrete gave way and fell on my head. Mercifully, I did not sustain any injuries as the quantity of con-crete that fell was less. Instead of waiting for some tragedy to happen, the authorities must act swiftly and carry out re-

pair works at this bus shelter,” says Sarala, a bus commuter.

TNEA extends deadlineThe last date for registering online for

Tamil Nadu engineering Admission (TNeA) through single window counsel-ling for undergraduate courses has been extended to June 2. According to a re-lease from the TNeA, the deadline was extended due to non-availability of inter-net connection in the districts of Thoothu-kudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari.

earlier this week, the government

suspended internet services in the three districts in the wake of Sterlite protests. Anna University had announced online counselling from this year and had also set up facilitation centres in the districts. The TNeA has four centres in these dis-tricts and the link with the facilitation centres could not be established since Thursday morning. Until 6 p.m. on Friday, a total of 1,16,003 candidates had regis-tered of which 11,348 had registered through the TNeA Facilitation Centres.

After many months, the Maraimalai Adigalar Salai in

Mogappair East, was dug up again for undertaking civic works. The road, which branches off the Ori Salai, connecting people to the Padikuppam Road, Nerkundram and Rail Nagar, now covered with rubble used by workers engaged by a civil engi-neering contractor who has bagged the tender for executing underground works.

Residents complained that the road digging op-erations have been under-taken for a second time on the street in many months now. “The road was never re-laid after the previous civic work exercise. And now they have dug it up again and covered the trenches with rubble and we wonder when we would get proper motor-able roads on this stretch,” said an elderly resident of

Maraimalai Adigalar Sa-lai, who preferred to re-main anonymous.

A cross-section of resi-dents of the locality felt that there is hardly any coordination between vari-ous civic agencies to ensure that road digging works are undertaken in synchronisa-tion to prevent frequent excavation of roads.

“In fact, many years

ago the State Government had realised this problem and formed a coordina-tion committee involving officials of the Greater Chennai Corporation, Chennai Telephones, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Compa-ny (formerly Tamil Nadu Electricity Board) and the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewer-

age Board (CMWSSB or popularly called Metrowa-ter) to ensure that there is synchronisation in under-taking digging operations. But the committee ap-pears to be defunct and the various arms of the government appear to be working independent of each other causing fre-quent digging up of roads,” said Srinivasan Iyer, a retired State Gov-ernment official and resi-dent of Thirumangalam.

Work on con-structing a re-tention wall

along the banks of the Cooum River near the new Maduravoyal bridge abutting Mogappair East has been suspended mid-way for many months now.

Local residents recalled that a work to construct a retention wall along the banks of Cooum River was undertaken by a contractor engaged by a public agency many months ago. The contractor had raised pil-lars – each separated by a distance of a few metres – along the banks of the river ostensibly to con-struct the retention wall. However, there is no sign of the work being com-pleted with only the pillars remaining at the site.

"I don't even recall when these pillars were erected. But going by the looks this must have hap-pened sometime last year. We have been demanding a retention wall at this place both for safety and

aesthetic reasons. However now the work here has been suspended and we are not aware when the con-tractor would resume op-erations to finish the reten-tion wall," said Sekar, a resident of Mogappair East.

Residents living in an apartment complex about a kilometre away from the site said leaving the work midway has resulted in the waste of tax payers' mon-ey. "Usually at sites where public works are under-taken, the contractor has to put up a signboard ex-plaining the nature of work that is being pursued and provide the tentative date of completion of the project. This is to ensure that the public, whose tax money is being used for the infrastructural develop-ment works, are aware about the ongoing projects. However, here at this site you don't find any such signboard. So we have no information whatsoever about when this project was scheduled to be com-pleted or why it was aban-doned," said Rajesh, a

resident.According to locals,

there has been no accident near the banks of the Co-oum River at this stretch so far. Hence there is no real worry about an acci-dental fall into the river considering that its banks are fairly wide and is cov-ered with earth. "However, from an aesthetic point of view a retention wall would cover the debris that lies on the banks and pro-vide a visual appeal. Therefore, it is better that the retention wall is con-structed quickly. Besides, the retention wall would prevent flooding during heavy monsoon period," argued Lakshmi, a local resident.
