Open access to depot, absence of wall causes concern

By N Rathi Chithra

The absence of a com-pound wall on one end of the Mogappair East Bus Depot is becoming a cause for concern for both crew of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation as well as for regular bus commuters who board public transport from there.

The bus depot, which was previously an open ground, was renovated a few years ago with good infra-structure. However, one side alone no compound wall was constructed for reasons best known to the authori-ties concerned. This side can now be accessed easily by anti-social elements through an opening in a broken com-

pound wall of an adjacent plot that is located on Church Road.

The absence of a com-pound wall on one side has posed another problem. The bus depot’s ground surface is at an elevated level about a feet above the adjacent plot. As a result of this when the bus crew steer the vehicle in the reverse direction to park the bus they are facing hassles. A misjudgment for a split second would cause the rear wheels of the bus crashing into the open ground.

“It is quite a task to park the vehicles in the reverse direction. The conductor has to be cautious in giving signals to the driver and alert him when the rear wheels

are at the edge of the elevat-ed surface. At night time, this task becomes even more arduous. We are forced to take a big risk while parking the vehicle in the reverse direction at this slot,” said a driver of a Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus. He did not want to be identi-fied for this report as talking to the media is prohibited as per service rules governing the bus crew.

The elevated surface pos-es risk to the passengers who come to the depot as well. Sumathy, who takes 7H from this depot every day to go to Kilpauk says, “It is really a risk. The bus depot is in an elevated position. We don’t know why they have left the space open.

Had they built a compound wall it would have even re-stricted the movement of cattle to this place.”

Sundaram, who stays on the Church Road in Mogap-pair East, said, “I come here regularly to drop my daughter who works in a private concern. I will be worried if there is no power. She goes to office early morning at 5. She usually takes the first bus. If there is no current, there are pos-sibilities of people acciden-tally slipping and falling to the ground at the edge of this side. This place is not safe for kids who while waiting for the bus, may end up falling down if they are too playful,” he pointed out.

With a portion of the road been dug up for laying high power cables and not relaid properly, motor-ists are finding it difficult at the 100ft road, near the Thirumangalam junction. Hope the authorities concerned set right the issue at the earliest.

Wednesdays are for Non-biodegradable WastesBy N Rathi Chithra

Along the Park Road in Anna Nagar Western

Extension, which branch-es off on the left at the junction where the Padi-kuppam Road ends and merges with the Mogap-pair - Thirumangalam Road, the Greater Chen-nai Corporation has put up a banner that you could miss while in a hurry. The banner put up along the wall near the entrance of the Millen-nium Park announces in Tamil that on every Wednesday non-biode-

gradable wastes alone would be collected.

All plastic materials and products made of glass and wood are clas-sified as non-biodegrad-able wastes as distinct from the waste generated from kitchens in house-holds that degrade easily.

"Since October 2 last year, we decided to col-lect non-biodegradable wastes from households only on Wednesdays. The idea was to encourage segregation of biodegrad-able and non-biodegrad-able wastes at source i.e. from the households where it is generated.

This would help us to handle our wastes better considering that in Chen-nai only 38 per cent of the solid waste is biodegrad-able," explained an offi-cial of the Ambattur Zone of the Greater Chennai Corporation.

However, many resi-dents in the Anna Nagar neighbourhood claim that they are unaware of the directive. To this day they have been mixing up kitchen waste with plas-tics and disposing them in a haphazard way that

makes source segregation of waste difficult.

"I was not aware that all plastic and wooden wastes have to be kept at home and deposited with the conservancy worker on each Wednesday. In fact, even the kitchen waste in my house is dumped in polythene bags and thrown in the garbage bins outside," admitted Prasanthi, a housewife living in an apartment on Park Road.

Residents feel that there is a need to inten-sify the awareness cam-paign on this. "Only on World Environment Day,

there appears to be thrust on cleanliness and reduc-ing plastic waste. We tend to go back to our habit of dumping everything to-gether the very next day. The civic agency must launch massive and sus-tained campaigns to make source segregation of waste successful. When that happens, they can expect to collect loads of non-biodegrad-able wastes on Wednes-days alone," felt Radhika Varma, who identified herself as a resident of Shantiniketan Colony in Anna Nagar Western Extension.

Free hostel facility for BC students

The Tamil Nadu government has invited applications from stu-dents ailing from back-ward classes, most backward classes and minority communities for free accommoda-tion and food in 14 hostels run by it in Chennai.

Students pursuing undergraduate, poly-technic and ITI courses can apply. The dead-line for filing the ap-plications is July 25. Five of them are wom-en hostels. Students whose parents’ annual income is less than one lakh are eligible for get-ting admission in these hostels.

Strewn garbage has become a com-mon sight at the 4th block in Mogappair West, near St An-

thony’s Church. Mogappair Residents say that their surrounding has not changed much after the merger with the corporation and are grappling with various issues related to sanitation and basic facilities.

They are forced to dump the garbage in vacant plots and roadsides in the absence of adequate dustbins. The garbage dumped in the few bins avail-able are also not being cleared fre-quently resulting in the waste to spill

around the bins which creates sanita-tion issues for the people living nearby, added residents.

It is a usual sight to see the cattle and dogs making the place messier. The poor handling of garbage attracts more dogs that feed on the waste. As it takes time to clear them, bad smell emits from it.

When contacted, an official said that it is hard to maintain cleanliness with-out the cooperation from the residents. Many dump garbage in nearby areas as they do not want to take the trouble of going to the bins, he added.

StreWN garbage continues to be a menace

Sherif goes globalChoreographer M Sherif is a re-

nowned name in the Tamil film industry having worked on several films and real-ity shows over the years. But the talented dancer, who holds immense respect for traditional dance practises in Tamil Nadu now has gone a step further in his craft by collaborating with others in the field globally to launch an initiative called the Global Dance Council. choreographers from across Europe for this venture at the UK House of Parlia-ment in Westminster.

DO’S AnD DOn’TS THiS SuMMERDitch oily food for cold soups,

sorbets and fresh vegetables to combat the harsh effects of sum-mer on your body, say experts.

Here are a few do’s and don’ts to combat the harsh summer heat.

FRESH FRuiTS, VEgETA-BlES AnD SAlADS: Summer heat could lead to dehydration

and dehydration could lead to electro-

lyte loss, which could leave you feeling lethargic, nauseous, ex-hausted and may even cause diar-rhoea and constipation. Up your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables in ways that are creative and yum like finger foods or fun salads so that you beat the heat.

liquiDS AnD SORBETS: Invite divine drinks into your life like kokum water, coconut water, chaas, fruit slushes and also frozen iced sorbets - the healthiest way to make this is to simply slush your fruit by lightly beating it and then freezing it.

These foods work well to restore

electrolyte balance and also pro-vide healthy and interesting ways to pack in those nutrients.

WATER AnD inFuSED WATER: Apart from increasing your water con-sumption to about 10-12 glasses per day, why not try killing two birds with one glass by infusing your water? Take care of both dehydration and nutrition by add-ing a small piece of fresh fruit like kiwi or strawberry or even basil to your water with a pinch of Sugar Free.

SAuTEED gREEnS: Give a nod to sau-teed greens this season because these are light, can be made very entertaining and always bring nice gifts with them like reduced cho-lesterol, cancer-fighting abilities, anti-ageing benefits, powerful vita-mins and tons of energy.

COlD SOuPS: Team up fresh salads with the perfect escort: hearty cold soups that include gazpachos, cold cucumber soups, tomato soups for that full flavour and for that feeling of being full.

ExCESS PROTEin: Pro-teins are harder to digest in general and coupled with

heat and dehydra-tion, could leave you

feeling uncomfortable and possi-bly nauseous if consumed in ex-cess. The recommended daily in-take of protein is one gram per kilo of ideal body weight (the appropri-ate weight for your height). So, no matter what you currently weigh, if your ideal body weight is sup-posed to be 57-58 kilos, your pro-tein intake should not exceed 57-58 grams per day.

Oily FOOD: When bodies are not hydrated, they are not always able to expel all by-products of heavier, oilier foods through the kidney, which is why urination is not as frequent when you are dehydrated. To counter this, the load of excret-ing oily food comes on to the skin - the second largest excretory or-gan - which will make you sweat more, dehydrate you further, kick-starting a vicious cycle.

The heat is here and if you’re wondering how to make those dry patches on your face very smooth, just make sure of follow-ing some basic routines.

HERE ARE A FEW TiPS FOR A HyDRATED HEAlTHy Skin:

u It is always impor-tant to apply sunscreen to your face before going out in the morning. Even if it’s not too sunny outside, the sun’s powerful rays can damage your skin.

u It is never good to use direct hot water on skin as it washes away the sebum that is required by the skin to retain moisture. A good way is to use luke-warm water for washing your face.

u Using the right kind of moisturizer is the key to skin hydration. During summer, you should opt for moisturizers which are water based instead of oil based.

u Drinking adequate amount of water (at least 8 glasses a day) is an es-sential one as water helps in digestion, circulation, absorption and getting rid of skin toxins. If your skin is not getting sufficient amount of water, the lack of hydration will present itself by dry and flaky skin.

u Hydrate your skin with a hydrating mask at least twice a week. This will not only help in hy-drating the skin but also in removing excess oils and other impurities. This is a must-do to improve the appearance of your skin.

u Toner therapy is something that is over-looked by many. For glowing and hydrated skin, add toner therapy to your beauty regime. It helps reduce open pores seizing maximum dust, dirt and pollution leading to acne.

Driving a two-wheeler on the Vandi Amman Koil Street near Mogappair East has become literally a shaky affair as gravel has been spread out on the road and no tarring has been done. The Vandi Am-man Koil Street connects Mogappair East with Pa-dikuppam and beyond.

While good tarred roads have been laid on one section of the road, another section is filled with gravel and there has been no indication of the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion taking any steps to

pour tar on it to make it a concrete motorable road.

“This gravel path starts right at the beginning of the road near the newly constructed Tamil Nadu Housing Board (Anna Nagar Division) apart-ments. For at least 500 metres there is no pucca road,” points out Arasan, a local auto rickshaw driv-er and resident of Vandi Amman Koil Street.

The gravel creates a lot of noise as tyres hit the surface and it also kicks up dust causing pollution, locals contend.

“Many people who are going to office or to drop

their children in schools take this road on a daily basis. Most of them do not travel by cars and their preferred mode of trans-port is a scooter or motor-cycle. But riding a two-wheeler is the most diffi-cult task on this road. Balancing is not easy and riders have to strain every nerve to ensure that the scooters don’t end up skid-ding on this pathway,” says Kanthimathi, a resident of an apartment situated alongside the Vandi Am-man Koil Street.

Residents point out that presently there is hardly any occupancy at the new-ly constructed Tamil Nadu Housing Board apartment. “But once the 236 Lower Income Group residential flats are occupied the traf-fic on this road is bound to increase. When that hap-pens this sort of a loose road will cause more ac-cidents especially that of vehicles skidding due to poor balance. The authori-ties must wake up before that and realise that there is urgent need for proper tar red roads on this stretch,” said another resi-dent, who did not want to be identified. “We wonder why only gravel has been dumped on a part of Vandi Amman Koil Street. It serves no purpose at all and is as good or bad as a kuchcha road. We need only concrete motorable roads to avoid skidding of scooters and motorcycles,” added Arasan.
