The pollution of the Cooum River, an impor-tant water body, is continu-ing unabated along its course in the Nolambur and Mogappair neighbour-

hood, especially at the Rail Nagar Bridge area.

Environmental activists and volunteers in the neighbourhood complain that waste water is being let into the river, which is al-ready heavily polluted

through its course in Chen-nai city, on a routine basis.

Apart from raising sus-picions that some indus-trial units could be illegally discharging effluents in the river, the activists and vol-unteer allege that waste

water from many house-holds are being let into the Cooum near Rail Nagar Bridge, close to Mogappair East and the Maduravoyal-Koyambedu highway road.

"Spotting white foams generated by chemicals and detergents are a very common occurrence along the river course near the Rail Nagar Bridge. The discharge is heavy during afternoons and evenings. We suspect that these are let out by some apartments in the neighbourhood, which do not have under-ground sewerage connec-tion. This needs to be probed by the authorities concerned and fixed," said Ranjith Kumar, an envi-

ronmental lover and resi-dent of Mogappair East. "I have volunteered with other environmenta l groups in the city for clean-ing up rivers where we es-sentially remove polythene bags and weeds from river beds. But the kind of pol-lution we are witnessing in the Cooum in Rail Nagar area cannot be cleaned up unless the source is de-tected and plugged," he adds.

Ranjith Kumar's friend Amaresh, who is also a volunteer with a non-gov-ernmental organisation that focuses on environ-mental protection, points out that cattle reared by milkmen in Padi Pudun-agar and Padikuppam are

usually allowed to graze along the Cooum river bed in Rail Nagar area. "These cattle – cows and buffaloes – can often be spotted ei-ther grazing along the Co-oum river bed or rolling in the slush. It is most likely that the cattle quench thirst from this polluted water. Imagine the threat of the milk getting polluted due to this. This milk is sup-plied only in the Mogap-pair neighbourhood and we cannot eliminate the threat of likely health risks," he adds.

"I only hope that this issue of pollution of the Cooum River in our neigh-bourhood is addressed quickly by the authorities concerned," he says.

One smart card for all metro rail networks

The Centre plans to launch a smart card that can be used across all Metro rail networks for limited number of trips. The card will be helpful for those who are visiting a city or the country for limited period.

The cards can be taken by showing pass-port for foreign visi-tors, and Aadhaar card or any other proof for

Indians. The cards will have to be charged at counter since states have different fare rules. Currently, smart cards issued by metro-rail can only be used on the specific net-work. The government has recently launched the “One Nation One Card” which can be used for any mode of transport and even for retail purchase.

In a strange issue, the presence of a trans-former, installed on

the Panneer Nagar road by the Tamil Nadu Genera-tion and Distribution Company (TANGED-CO), formerly called the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) has re-stricted the movement of cars from one of the gates of an apartment complex.

The Krishna Nahar Apar tment complex, which has about 72 hous-ing units, was constructed around 15 years ago. It has access from two roads – the

Spartan School Road [that branches off from the end of Pari Salai] and also from Panneer Nagar Road – as gates are located on both sides.

Right outside one of the gates, the TANGEDO had installed a huge transform-er some years ago. Over a period of time, partially due to the change in eleva-tion of the road surface from the apartment sur-face, the transformer’s height has come close to the height of the gate. Due to this, only two-wheelers can be taken outside this gate and not cars as the vehicle’s roof may hit the

transformer.While office bearers of

the apartment complex residential welfare associa-tion could not be reached for comments, a few resi-dents, who did not wish to be identified, said though there are other gates, if the road is paved deeply or the transformer relocated, it would help them to use the gate optimally.

“We have other gates right now. So there is no immediate issue of our ac-cess being affected entirely due to the presence of the transformer. But nonethe-less, our right to freely ac-cess this entrance gate from

Panneer Nagar cannot be appropriated for posterity. In future we may need to have free access from this gate. Therefore authorities concerned must ensure that we have absolute ac-cess to our apartment from this entrance as well,” said, a 50-something gentleman who was stepping out for his evening walk when this Correspondent visited the area recently. Another resi-dent said that in ideal solu-tion to this would be to relocate the transformer to some other place. Alterna-tively, the road has to be paved deeply to an extent that the surface levels of the road and the apartment complex match and then we may be able to fully use this gate as well.

When contacted an of-ficial of the TANGEDCO over phone said, “Shifting of the transformer is al-most ruled out. It involves huge capital cost, you see. The residents can use the other gates.”

Tiny rods embedded in concrete at sidewalks in some places in the Anna Nagar neighbourhood are posing a risk for pedestri-ans. These iron rods – as seen in the accompanying photograph – were origi-nally a part of iron fixture that were erected to put up signage, bus stands or some civic utility structures. Lat-er, when the fixture were removed, the poles were not uprooted in entirety and instead merely cut leaving tiny rods embedded on the concrete surface.

On the Fourth Avenue Road in Anna Nagar (Shanthi Colony) near the AC Block, for instance, one can spot two short iron rods jutting out on the surface of the footpath close to a tea and snacks outlet. Residents said it is the responsibility of au-thorities to ensure that when iron fixtures are re-moved, it is done perfectly. “Such rods must be up-rooted entirely. After all that is not a difficult task as you just need to dig up the surface a bit. But it is iron-ic that the workers who
