of the storm water drains at 5th Main road, Phase I, Nolambur Scheme in February, new roads were laid last month. But to the surprise of one and all, the new roads were dug open again to lay metro water pipe lines on March 8. However work was completed and the dug up area was covered a couple of days later. Poor planning and certainly it is the public money that is going for a toss!

I am a XIth standard student residing at Sakthi Nagar, Nolambur. It has become a common sight to see over speeding vehicles on this stretch. The drivers do not understand that they are putting to risk the lives of many people. Apart from this there are more than 50 stray dogs in the locality and every week 3 to 4 dogs get hit by the speeding vehicles. The other day a puppy was overrun by a vehicle and it died on the spot. Many a time people ignore such incidents and very few take pains to clear it. The need of the hour is speed breakers and speed limit sign boards.

Drivers need to curtail their speed. It is a request and of course it is a concern of safety for the little children as there is play school nearby.

‘Best out of waste’ has always been our concept in leading a better life. How-ever, several tonnes of do-mestic kitchen waste being generated daily have been dumped as waste in the land fill yards. Segregating these waste properly and extracting best out of it for the benefit of human be-ings is a great challenge and it has been successfully addressed by the Greater Chennai Corporation in Zone 7, Ambattur.

A dumping yard in Athipattu at Ambattur has got a Bio Methane Plant through which the food waste is converted into ef-fective methane gas which provides economically vi-able energy source. The methane has been used in electricity generation, claims, an assistant execu-tive engineer, Solid waste Management, Greater Chennai Corporation.

“Through methane re-covery systems installed at land fill sites, we can re-duce the gas emission to a

major extent. Senior Scien-tist from the Baba Atomic Research Centre trained the workers of the Ambat-tur Zone in handling the plant successfully. He inter-acted with the staff mem-bers and clarified all their doubts. He also motivated them to carry out the proj-ect successfully,” said the official, who requested anonymity.

Deivanai, an environ-mental activist says, “The efforts of Chennai Corpo-ration has to be appreciated and it has to be extended to all the zones in Chennai. Turning food waste into a resource is the need of the hour as it is considered as the second largest category of solid waste. More we waste and dump more we get our environment pol-luted, especially ground water. Hotels and other eatery shops should coop-erate with the Corporation in this noble cause. Instead of dumping the waste in the bin if they join hands

Residents of Ori Salai and Electricity Board Road of Mogappair East have been facing in-convenience due to the ongoing storm water drain work that has led to the blocking of two roads. They don’t have access to their houses through Pari Road end and the EB Road end. So people are forced to use the congested Maraimalai Adigalar Street to commute on most days. Even the road towards Golden George Nagar has been intermittently blocked, making it difficult for them to access the Maduravoyal New Bridge.

“First, the Pari Road was blocked and so ac-cess to Ori Salai via Pari Road was cut off. Look at the heaps of mud kept to block the road. We used to take EB road to go to Pari Road but now that is also blocked.

“Literally we have to go around looking for

alternate routes to reach our destination” says Santhanam, who lives on Ori Salai. People who reside on EB road are also facing difficulty. One side is fully blocked and the other side that is via Ori Street a small portion is left free and the four wheelers find it difficult to pass through. “My kid is studying in a school situated in this road. Now school buses are not able to take this route due to the road block and so we have decided to drop them in our car until this work gets com-pleted,” says Samadharman.

Now travelling on the Pari Road has become a nightmare. I used to go to grind rice and chilli powder in the machine kept in a store in the Road. I am scared to go as lot of vehicles are rushing and many vehicles are not following the one way rule and they end up causing traffic chaos most of the times. Literally there is no place to walk. It is better for the pedestrians to avoid that route, says Prema, a home maker.

skin Care: A high SPF sunscreen is an absolute must have, that needs to be ap-plied before you enter the colour mayhem. Preferably 60 SPF, the sunscreen must be water-resistant and contain the wonder ingredient Tamarind in it. Loaded with antioxidants, tamarind protects your skin from hazardous radicals. It also is known to have enzymes, Vitamin B, Vitamin C and alpha hydroxyl acids that remove dead skin cells.

This will provide both hydration and smoothness and alongside protect the skin from the harshness of the chemicals. Make sure you use a generous amount of cream and get it all over your body to combat the harmful effects of the UV-A and UV-B rays.

The access to Dr Ambedkar Statue bus she l t e r on

the Eri Scheme Road in Mogappair West was cut off for many days due to ongoing storm water drain works, which led to the dig-ging of the road adjacent to the bus stop. Bus com-muters were put to a lot of inconvenience during

the period as they had to wait under the sun to board buses. Finally, the caved in road was filled with debris and the access was restored only on Friday last.

“Under this scorching summer heat, we have been forced to stand under the hot sun. We have no choice as we have to board a bus to reach our working places. There are also no share auto rickshaws on

the road and as it is only a few buses ply on this stretch according to fixed frequency,” complained Nandini, a passenger, who was waiting on the road for a bus on Wednesday last.

“We are happy that the storm water drain work is being carried out suc-cessfully in many parts of Mogappair but, it also causes lot of inconvenience to the general public. There is no other bus shelter near-by for the commuters to wait. In other bus stops at least trees will be there or else some petty shops or houses will be there so that commuters can wait under the shade there until they get their buses. But in this bus stop you can’t see anything other than open space,” says Girija a resi-dent of Mogappair West.

“We get 7H and 77J bus-es coming from Mogappair West. We don’t get share autos. We have to wait for the buses and they do not have that much frequency too which ultimately in-
