Airport parkingrates to be cut

In a relief for air passengers, car parking rates will be significantly re-duced at the Chen-nai airport to ap-proximately one-third of the present rates.

The decision was taken after they re-ceived a lot of com-plaints from the people using the airport car parking facility.

Car parking rates will be reduced on a par with other cities and will be slashed to Rs 50/- for 0-30 minutes and an ad-ditional Rs 40 for parking upto two hours.

The current rates for car parking in-clude Rs 150 and Rs 160 up to two hours for private and com-mercial vehicles re-spectively. The exact date of implementa-tion of new rates will be announced soon.

West Chennai Sahodaya Cluster Schools conferred The Best teacher Award to Mrs. Latha Vishwana-than, music teacher of Sindhi Model SSS, Kellys in recog-nition of her merito-rious service to-wards music. She is a resident of Appu Flats in Mogappair. Dr Ganeshan of Vi-vekanandha College handed over the award.

With a sports loving and basketball fanatic, Mr Marie Wilson at the helm of affairs of the Jeppiaar Institute of Tech-nology, Sriperumpudur one just cannot ask for more as their boys won the Anna university Inter Zone Basketball Champi-onship for the record seventh time. By doing so they emu-

lated the girls team who are also having a pretty good run in basketball.

JIT boys thrashed St Jo-seph’s Engineering College, Chennai 75-32 in the final. Ju-nior India star Daniel Richards spearheaded the attack with a gallant display and was ably supported by Anand, Shelton,

Varun and the lanky Vishesh. In the semi finals, JIT de-

feated Kumarasamy College by a 51 run margin.

This title triumph did give JIT a pride of place as seven of the boys have been selected to represent Anna University in the All India Inter University tournaments to be held later.

Pending storm waterdrain work resumes

Work orders for undertaking pending storm water drain work across a length of 117 kilo-metres have been issued and work commenced three days back, using the Chennai Mega City Development funds.

According to a release, Corporation officials discussed the progress in the construction of missing links in storm water drains across the city and the safety aspects while undertaking construction.

The local assistant executive engineers have been instructed to track the areas where work has been undertaken. On safety aspects, the Corporation has asked contractors to create temporary pathways with railing in areas which are dug up and to clear the silt and debris then and there, in order to minimise inconvenience to the public.

Contractors who do not comply with the instructions will be issued notices following which work may be stopped, added the release.

Ola rides to get saferOla a private taxi hailing app. launched a

real time monitoring system name ‘Guardian’ to make rides safer to its customers. Pilot ver-sion were released in Bangalore, Pune and Mumbai as a part of Ola’s Street safe pro-gramme. The feature will be introduced in other cities including Chennai by the end of the year.

By Our correspondent

A cross-section of resi-dents of Ori Salai in Mogappair East is con-cerned over possible dam-age to underground elec-trical and OFC cables as a contractor engaged by a civic agency has begun to undertake digging up works on either side of the

road that serves as a con-necting path to Nerkun-dram.

Only a few months ago residents of the street were put to hardship following the digging up of roads in their locality. The road has not been re-laid since then and the monsoon is also around the corner. “The digging up of the road in

the past had resulted in heavy dust pollution in our area. We had to clean our cars twice and the floors of our house using water everyday. We were just hoping that new road will be laid when a contractor began undertaking fresh digging operations last week,” lamented Arif Khan, a resident of Ori Salai.

Last week residents were woken up at night by sounds of JCBs being op-erated. “Around midnight, I woke up on hearing the noise of movement of heavy vehicles and saw some flash lights. I peeped through my window and found a JCB stationed right outside my house. Immediately I switched on the lights and opened the door and gate and stepped out to inquire what was happening. The JCB op-erator and some workers said they were digging up the side of the road for some project,” recalled Subramanian, another resident of the locality.

“My sleep was spoilt

and I remained outside the gate to supervise what work they were doing as I feared that accidentally the JCB operator might end up damaging the un-derground electricity cable that is connected to the main fuse board of my house,” he added.

Residents wondered why the operation was carried out at night. “The risk of the underground Optic Fibre Cable and electricity cable getting damaged accidentally is high at night because of poor visibility despite hav-ing flash lights.

What if they damage the cable? Then we will have to run around to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Compa-ny (TANGEDCO or for-merly called Tamil Nadu Elect r ic i ty Board or TNEB) office to get them repaired. It would be quite a hassle,” added Khan.

Some residents said such operations must be undertaken during day time so that they can be supervised better. How-ever, a worker engaged by the contractor said, “We can’t use heavy vehicles on this street in the day time as there is heavy flow of traffic.”

Madurai girl having a splash

The last thing one would expect in a gangster film is a melodious num-ber on raga Dharmavati. And the placing of a song - in between the confronta-tion between a gangster and the cops - gave it an even weird note. But then, singer Swagatha Krishnan pulled off the ‘Kannanin Leelai’ with stunning ease to give another face to the number.’

Easily the pick of the

four numbers of composer C S Sam’s album in ‘Van-jagar Ulagam,’ the singer has gone bonkers on the adulation. “Though ‘Aa-laliloo’ (Diya) brought in her instant fame, this one looks to be the talk of the town, going by the de-mand at FM radio and the overall buzz it has gner-ated.

“The instructions was to render it at an easy pitch but the emotions had to be brought out in ‘Kannanin Leelai’ soaked with clas-sical krithis to bring out the allure of Lord Krish-na. For any song, the fine tuning had to be perfect and Sam gave it a new feel with his distortion of gui-

tar. I could not check the emotions when the appre-ciation poured in from the knowledgeable quarters.”

Swagatha was in for a pleasant surprise to know her Telugu debut number ‘Aala Aala’ in `Lakshmi’ fell in the range of un-charted melodies to rock

the industry.”For the engineering

graduate, moving over to Chennai from Madurai meant coming into contact with Sam. And things had never been the same for Swagatha, right from the time she came up with that pleasing ‘Nee Thane En Too Vaanam’ for com-poser Santosh Dayanidhi in the due-for-release ‘Lisa.’

Though early days yet, Swagatha said whatever happens to her career lines, she will ever remem-ber the ‘Aalaliloo’ effect on her. While in the US on a musical journey, Sam gave her a call and she had to rush back to pitch per-

fect the dream song. “What gave the special status was in bringing to light the mother-daughter bond where the feel of the mother reflected so well on the catchy lyrics.”

A musical supervisor for Sam, the onus is on Swagatha to set up plat-form for the emerging talents, coming in all hues. “I must say it is an embar-rassment of riches to pick the ones from the varied talent scouting channels. Each singer is gifted and my job is to suit the style with the advantage of knowing as to whom the song will be picturised. These are days when every aspect is dwelled unlike

the past when the singer is not even aware as to whom the number is meant for.”

Melody numbers look to be Swagatha’s forte but the truth is in not getting tested in varied mode. The versatile tag is still to sit on her and hoping to set that equation right is the singer in the next few songs. “I am not supposed to let slip those till the release of the album.”

Set to release her first independent album in ar-rangement with World Symphony, Swagatha said a surprise is in store for her legion of fans, which has taken a fast forward mode. Thanks to ‘Kan-nanin Leelai’.

Vijay Deverakonda is set to be back in the theatres yet again. After the back-to-back success of his films Pelli Choopulu, Arjun Reddy and Geetha Govindam, which became trendsetters respectively in terms of content, style and box office moolah, the actor is now going to be seen in NOTA.

With this film the actor is set to notably venture into Tamil cine-ma, an arena he has wanted to step in to, provided a good opportunity comes up.

Directed by Anand Shankar, the film is a Telugu-Tamil bilingual

that notably has Vijay dubbing for himself in Tamil, after putting in a great deal of effort to learn the language.

The movie also comes in a time when there’s a lot of political dis-cussion going on around the Telugu speaking states of Telan-gana and Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu too. And this has garnered a great deal of attention around the film.

Also, the trailer of the film man-aged to impress several people with everyone talking about a pos-sible game changer. Well, Vijay is

surely the latest sensation of south Indian cinema with an interesting choice of films and we are glad to be associating with a versatile actor like him once again after we had brought Pelli Choopulu to the US. The film releases world-wide on October 5.

Yet again, for the audience in the US, Freeze Frame Films – the overseas distributors for the flick – has planned a grand release, with premieres a day ahead on October 4.

The political thriller stars Meh-

reen Kaur Pirzada as the female lead in NOTA while Sathyaraj and Nassar will be playing key sup-porting roles.

‘Bad food habits can lead to cancer’

Green tea, for example, inhibits the spread of breast and prostate cancer cells, while curcumin and pomegran-ate slow the growth of prostate cancer cells. enrich your diet with green tea, curcumin, pomegranate, and broc-coli, rich in polyphenol to keep cancers at bay, a nutrition-ist said, cautioning that unhealthy eating habits leads to cancer. “The key could be in the food we eat and in its antioxidant properties, especially regarding polyphenols,” he added. “It has been scientifically proven that foods rich with polyphenol content have antioxidant and anti-inflam-matory effects, which lead to less neurodegeneration, slower ageing, anti-carcinogenesis, among other benefits,” he said. She said that is why a diet poor in polyphenol is related to a higher risk of cancer including breast cancer, pancreatic, ovarian, skin, prostate, intestine and esopha-gus cancer.

“Green tea, for example, inhibits the spread of breast and prostate cancer cells, while curcumin and pomegran-ate slow the growth of prostate cancer cells,” he said. As for broccoli, the specialist said that it is rich in isothiocya-nate and sulforaphane, which inhibit the growth and promote the apoptosis of cancer cells. Source: internet

ebutant film-m a k e r M a r i Selvaraj’s Pari-yerum Perumal

is one of the best Tamil film made on caste dis-crimination and the pain of the oppressed people. It stands out, not preachy and the filmmaker has not thrusted the message on your face.

Mari Selvaraj has visu-ally represented the cruel practice exists in the soci-ety and leaves it to the audiences to take the final call.

The film begins with a bunch of youngsters from the oppressed community moving around a village pond after another gang from upper caste coming near the same place. One guy from the oppressed community says that they should give a tough fight to the opposite camp but his friend says things will not change until they stop working under the upper caste. Then, we see a brutal murder of Karuppi

(dog) of Pariyerum Pe-rumal (Kathir) who be-longs to the lower caste. Later we get to know that director Mari Selvaraj draws an analogy be-tween Karuppu and Pari-yerum Perumal.

Ranjith’s Madras and

Attakathi authentically represented the working class community but with Kabali and Kaala, he became a propaganda filmmaker and lost his charm of telling poignant stories without forced

messages. With Pari-yerum Perumal, Ranjith is back to form not as a filmmaker but as a pro-ducer! Mari Selvaraj shows a lot of promise with his exemplary direc-torial skills. Despite hav-ing a great scope to

preach audiences, he pre-fers a subtle approach.

If Kathir’s character has been represented as the face of all the young-sters from the oppressed community, there is an old man who executes

honor killings as suicides and deaths, he has been portrayed as the face of the heartless animals in the society.

Kathir has given his heart and soul to the film, some of the scenes where he gets beat up look very

real. There are scenes where Kathir addresses important topics on op-pression but it doesn’t sound preachy mainly because of his realistic performance and solid writing of Mari Selvaraj.

Anandhi looks pretty and homely as a small town girl, there is a bril-liant emotional scene in the pre-climax where she scores extremely well as a solid performer. The old man who comes as the pride upper caste guy who converts honor kill-ings as murders and sui-cides is menacing and create shivering mo-ments. There are many shock values in Pari-yerum Perumal, the death of the dog, the scene where Kathir gets beaten up and the revelation of his dad.

Looks like keeping the fringes of the roads clean is a Herculean task in the neighbourhood and would remain so for years to come. How else could one explain the scene at the entrance of Seethakathi Salai close to the V3 JJ Nagar Police Station in Mogappair East?

Some weeks ago Mogap-pair Mail had highlighted with photograph how a portion of the Seethakathi Salai has been used to dump dozens of motorcy-cles that were ostensibly seized by the local police for various reasons such as

involvement in accidents or absence of valid vehicle documentation with the rider. The vehicles that were haphazardly parked there and chained had eaten up the motorable space.

Now the motorcycles have been removed from the spot in response to the report. However, the spot where the motorcycles were earlier kept has turned into an unauthorised dumping spot for all sorts of waste by domestic households and commer-cial establishments in the locality. A visit to the local-ity showed that a huge pile of waste has been dumped

by people who do not care for any displaying any sort of civic sense. "Some con-struction activity is going at the ground right at the spot. However the wastes such as thermocol and cardboard have been dumped by passersby over the past few days. It has now piled into a heap and strikingly stands out as an eyesore to anyone," said Mari, a trader who oper-ates in Seethakathi Salai.

Locals say that because there is a pile of waste even those who are taking some materials to discard them in dustbins throw it here upon seeing the dump spot. "The irony of the whole

matter is that just a few yards away we have three huge garbage bins that have been placed by the private company engaged by the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion to clear the city's wastes. But since people spot this first, they dump everything here instead of placing them in the garbage bins. Even tree and plant wastes are thrown at the spot," complained Senthil, another trader at a complex opposite this spot.

People of the locality said they hoped the Great-er Chennai Corporation would step in and take some action to clear the garbage pile.
