The study showed choosing indul-gent dessert first may lead you to eat lower-calorie meals later. “Diners who chose the indulgent dessert as their first dish, followed by a healthier main and side dish to make up for their high-calorie des-sert. Diners who picked the healthier dessert may have thought they already had done a good deed for their bod-ies so they deserved higher-calorie food fur-ther down the cafeteria line,” says a study. For the study, researchers included 134 diners aged between 18 and 60 with an average age of 32. Vehicular traffic has been closed on one side of the service road near the Thirumangalam flyover on the Jawa-harlal Nehru Salai, popularly called as the 100 Feet Road, due to pipeline laying works. The service road had been dug up and one can seek huge trenches with pipelines near the junc-tion of the Mogappair-Thirumangalam Road.

Due to the ongoing civic works, vehicles proceeding towards Thiru-mangalam from the Anna Nagar West Bus Depot end are unable to use the service road. Only drivers of vehicles proceeding towards Koyambedu Ring Road are able to use the flyover and commute without any hassles.

Inquires reveal that the civic works have been commissioned by the Chen-nai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), which is known in common parlance as Me-trowater, for laying of underground water pipelines. Consequently vehicle drivers have been urged to proceed to their destinations via the 17th Main Road.

Due to this motorists are forced to take a long detour to reach their respec-tive destinations. Incidentally, for many months traffic on the stretch was di-verted when the work on the Chennai Metro Rail was undertaken and it was only some months ago that traffic on the service road was restored.

“I usually take the service road be-sides the flyover to take a right turn to

the Thirumangalam-Mogappair Road to reach a restaurant near the Tamil Nadu Housing Board complex in Thi-rumangalam where I work as a waiter. But now that the service road is closed, I have to ride via the 17th Main Road, proceed to the Thirumangalam-Roundtana Road and then take a right turn at the junction before I could head to my restaurant. This is quite a long route and a detour of over 1.5 kilome-tres. Considering the escalating cost of petrol, this is a luxury for those like me who earn poor wages,” said Muthura-man, who resides in a bachelor’s ac-commodation on a by-lane off Anna Nagar West Main Road.

An alternative route to some desti-nations can be taken via School Road and Park Road, said locals. However, residents and motorists hoped that the civic work is completed quickly and a new service road is laid to make their commute easier.

Civic works on near Thirumangalam flyover

Higher Secondary schools run by the Greater Chennai Cor-poration have crossed 90 per cent pass for the first time by securing 90.41 pass percentage in the recently con-ducted Class 12 public examinations. The civic body maintains 32 h igher secondar y schools.

Of the total 4,841 students who wrote the examination, 4,377 students cleared the exam. As previous years, girls outshone boys by 8.28 per cent. Of the total 3,045 girls appeared, 2,843 stu-dents passed, which is 93.73 per cent.

Meanwhile, Out of 1,796 boys, only 1,534 cleared the exam,

which is 85.45 per cent.During the 2017-

2018 academic year, the Chennai Corpora-tion schools registered a pass percentage of 88.74. In 2016-2017, the civic body had reg-istered 88.74 per cent.

In another achieve-ment, four Chennai Corporation schools -- namely Koyambedu Chennai Higher Sec-ondary School, Sub-burayan Street Chen-nai Higher Secondary School, Nesappakkam Chennai Higher Sec-ondary School and N u n g a m b a k k a m Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School -- recorded 100 per cent result. The four schools have 300 students in total.

The motorcycle of Dev Kumar (26) of Mogappair, which was stolen, was found by his friend in front of a Tasmac shop on Padi Mogappair Road recently. When his friend saw the bike parked outside the Tasmac shop, he called him over the phone and waited near the bike. They waited for an hour and saw a person come and take the bike. He was caught and handed over to the Nolambur Police. The thief was identified as Aravin-dan of Mannurpet. He was remanded to judi-cial custody. The Po-lice are investigating.

An ambitious proj-ect to provide last mile connectivity to com-muters of Chennai Metro Rail in the neighbourhoods of Anna Nagar and Mogappair through bicycles has ended up posing hurdles for pe-destrians at several lo-cations.

The Chennai Met-r o R a i l L i m i t e d (CMRL) had tied up with an agency to pro-vide Smart Bikes (cy-cles) at some of its s ta t ions in Anna Nagar and also at stra-tegic locations in and around a radius of about five kilometres. The idea behind the initiative, as reported by Mogappair Mail earlier, was to help commuters reach their nearby destinations after alighting from Metro Rail. The bi-cycles could also be used to ride to the

nearby stations from various parts.

However, more than three months af-ter the service was in-troduced in the neigh-bourhood, it is posing challenges for pedestri-ans. And the reason for this is that many of these bicycle stands are located on the plat-forms that are actually meant for walking.

“On the Shanthi Colony road, two cy-cle stands have been set up on the elevated road sidewalks. The cycles have occupied almost the entire space on the platforms. The irony is that the Great-er Chennai Corpora-t ion has actual ly placed a notice board at one spot on the road warning that parking vehicles on the elevat-ed platforms is an of-fence. But now a proj-ect initiated by a Gov-ernment agency is blatantly violating the restriction on parking

of vehicles by estab-lishing cycle bays there,” points out Mu-kundan, a resident of an apartment in Shan-thi Colony, Anna Nagar.

Likewise, on the Park Road in Anna Nagar Western Exten-sion, a Smart Bike stand has been estab-lished on the pedes-trian path. “Now pe-destrians are forced to walk on the road on this stretch. As it is at many places plat-forms are encroached upon by vendors and illegal constructions. Now you have legal-ised this by parking bicycles there. This is something that needs to be stopped immedi-ately as pedestrians have an absolute right of way in so far as footpaths are con-cerned,” argues Anan-dan, an activist and resident of Welcome Colony in Thiruman-galam. Pedestrians were of the view that the authorities con-cerned must find alter-native spots for the cycle stands.

The equivalent of one bacon rasher or lamb chop a day, on average, raises an indi-vidual’s risk of bowel cancer by around 20%, the University of Oxford researchers said. Processed meats, like ham, bacon and sausages, have been classed as cancer-causing carcinogens by the World Health Or-ganisation, which suggested the same is very probably true for red meat. While cancer risks have previously been shown to increase above 50g of processed meat a day, the latest Cancer Research UK funded

study found sizeable increased risk at lower levels. The findings, published in the ‘Inter-national Journal of Epidemiology’, show those averaging 76g of red and processed meat a day saw their risk of bowel cancer rise by a fifth compared to peo-ple eating 21g a day.

The onset of summer has brought with it woes for the bus commuters in the neighbourhoods of Anna Nagar and Mogap-pair East and West. At many places in the neigh-bourhood, there are either no bus shelters at all or the

shelters have been dam-aged forcing commuters of Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses to brave the sweltering heat.

"Doctors have advised that people should be wary of heat because it could lead to sunstrokes and sometimes these could be fatal as well. But while

travelling by bus, we have very few shelters at bus stops. In many other places in the Anna Nagar and Mogappair neighbour-hoods, we are forced to wait in the open unmindful of the merciless sun rays," complained Radhika, a young executive who pre-fers to take the public trans-port to commute to her workplace and back.

For instance in Mogap-pair East there are no bus shelters at the Velammal School bus stop and J J Nagar Police Station bus stop. Mogappair Mail had highlighted this on a few occasions in the past three years but there has been no concrete action from the authorities concerned so far.

Commuters point out that the bus shelters must be constructed either by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation whose bus fleet is operated across the city or the Greater Chennai Corporation. "Ironically bus stops with less patron-age in areas like the Eri Scheme First Main Road have good bus shelters but at bus stops with high vol-umes of passengers such as

Thirumangalam and Col-lector Nagar, we do not have proper bus shelters. I hope the authorities con-cerned will examine this and address the problem before the dog days or Kathiri season begins in a few days," said M Ramesh Iyengar, an elderly citizen of Mogappair East and a regular bus commuter.

At the bus stop in Thi-rumangalam, ahead of the Thirumangalam Metro Rail Station, a steel struc-ture exists. However, the structure does not have a roof. “What use is this bus shelter when it does not have a roof? We can’t even afford to sit on the steel rod seats as it gets hotter in the afternoons. At least the authorities can intervene and install a roof so that this shelter will serve its intended purpose," said Satya Krishnan, a house-wife.
