Mogappair West depotrenovation delayed

The ongoing reno-vation work at the Metropolitan Trans-por t Cor porat ion (MTC) bus terminus at Mogappair West has been delayed. Work was undertaken sev-eral months ago on relaying the surface at the MTC bus depot. However, the work still remains at a prelimi-nary stage.

Piles of debris and waste can also be seen accumulated at some spots inside the bus terminus from which the MTC operates bus services to different destinations including B r o a dway, A n n a Square and T Nagar. Consequently both crew of the MTC bus as well as commuters are being put to hard-ship on a daily basis.

Work on laying a concrete surface at the bus terminus was initi-ated several months

ago, according to regu-lar bus commuters. Since the COVID-19 lockdown was im-posed and MTC bus services were discon-t i nu e d f o r s o m e months, had the reno-vation been completed during that period, it would have saved the crew and commuters from hardship, they felt.

However, now bus services have resumed and the patronage from the commuters has also begun to pick up in recent weeks. But the lack of infrastruc-ture is putting off com-muters. “During the recent rains, water was stagnated at several places inside the bus terminus and the com-muters inc luding women were put to a lot of hardship. They literally struggled to navigate and board buses,” recalled one of the bus commuters Vidhya Dharini.

For the bus crew too it is quite an ardu-ous task to drive the bus inside the terminus and park it. “There is a pile of debris and we have to be cautious not to bump into it while turning the bus or parking the vehicle. It is unlikely that the debris pile will be cleared any time soon-er,” said a MTC bus crew member who was spotted sipping tea at a shop outside during a break time.

Both commuters and crew members said that the authori-ties concerned must ensure that the con-tractor engaged to un-dertake the renovation work completes it at the earliest. “This is a public utility service. Hence it is all the more important to ensure that the people are not put to any sort of hard-ship for a prolonged period,” said a com-muter.

Traffic on Poonamallee High Road between Padikup-pam causeway junction to Arumbakkam bus stop junction is now moving at snails pace due to damaged roads at three spots. Right from light to heavy vehicles enter the city via this road and one witnesses movement of thousands of vehicles every hour. Normally

it takes 10 minutes to cross the above stretch, but after the rains it’s taking more than double the time.

For the two-wheeler riders, in particular, this road poses danger as the crushed stones that are lying loose on the road get darted to-wards different directions when vehicle tyres move on them. Police personnel posted at various points are unable to do much and look mere spectators. It’s high time the Highways Department set right these problems at the earliest.

Velammal to host Digital

Margazhi UtsavCOVID pandemic has posed a

The Greater Chennai Cor-poration last week demol-ished an illegal building at Golden George Nagar in Mogappair.

The building was con-structed at the end of Erode

Jaganathan Street, Golden George Nagar, at Mogappair in 2007 when it was Ambat-tur Municipality. A com-plaint was raised by an adja-cent landowner against the illegal construction on the

street and the case went to the Madras High Court. The court directed the Corpora-tion to demolish the illegal structure as per the Town and Country Planning act and it was done so last Tuesday.

Book Fair to be postponed by a month

The Chennai Book Fair, which is usually be held in January, is likely to be postponed

by a month due to COVID-19.Due to the pandemic lockdown, there were

several restrictions, including on operating printing presses and conducting functions, due to which no new books were printed and book release functions were not held.

A few two-wheelers – a couple of motorcycles, a scooter and gearless vehicle – have remained aban-doned near the Boys High School run by the Greater Chennai Corporation in Mogappair East. The ve-hicles have been lying abut-ting the compound wall of the school, which is located on Maraimalai Adigalar Salai, closer to the Mogap-pair East Industrial Estate and Valayapathi Salai.

Residents of the locality in Mogappair East say that they do not recall who owned these bikes or when they were parked at the spot. “We do not know when these two-wheelers were abandoned at this location or by whom. In fact, we even wonder why would someone want to abandon scooters and mo-torcycles purchased with their hard earned money like this,” said a resident of Maraimalai Adigalar Sa-lai, who identified himself

as Boopathi.Some of the residents

said that such parking of vehicles is an eyesore of sorts. “The vehicles look ravaged as they have been exposed to the vagaries of nature for many months now. Definitely this is not a sight that you would like your locality to be identi-fied with. Also the Greater Chennai Corporation’s school compound was beautified a couple of years ago with paintings that spread awareness on social and environmental issues. Now these images of the abandoned scooter and motorcycles have overtak-en the essence of the paint-ed messages,” lamented another resident.

A local resident also pointed out that the vehi-

cles were parked close to what looked like an elec-tricity junction box belong-ing to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB but now called TANGED-CO). “What if there is a short circuit and it triggers a fire accident? The two-wheelers would also catch fire and unnecessarily pose a risk for all of us,” the residents, who too chose to be anonymous, said.

A cross-section of the residents of the locality was of the view that the Greater Chennai City Po-lice must step in and re-move these vehicles from the spot. The vehicles have remained unclaimed so they feel it would be best for the police to confiscate them and auction it off as junk.

Master Arnav Vijay in a Kids-centric film

Actor Vijaykumar’s g randson and Arun Vijay’s son Master Arnav Vijay will be debuting as an actor. He has been signed on to play the lead role in a Kids-centric film by 2D Enter-tainment, the film will be Produced by Suriya and Co-Produced by Rajsekar Karpoorasundarapandian along with S.R.Ramesh Babu of RB Films. This kids-centric film will be directed by Sarov Shan-mugam with Cinematog-raphy by Gopinath, Music by Nivas K Prasanna, Editing by Mega, Produc-

tion Design by Amaran and Costumes by Vinothi-ni Pandian.

Director Sarov Shanmu-gam says, “family enter-tainers featuring kids have been scarcely found in our industries unlike Holly-wood.” He continues, “Su-riya sir’s 2D Entertainment is ritually inclined to pro-duce beautiful family enter-tainers that provide valu-able entertainment for universal audiences. Tentatively titled 'Production No 8', the film is being directed by Sumanth Radhakrish-nan. He has earlier di-rected the film Sath-uram2.

The Venugopal Road in Mogappair is in need of repairs as potholes have begun to emerge at some places. The Venugo-pal Road is an impor-tant road that links Mogappair East [from Church Road] and M o g a p p a i r We s t [Near Vijaya Bank] and is used by hun-dreds of motorists on a daily basis.

While as it is the Venugopal road is

smaller in width and winds its way through curves at different places, the tar and bi-tumen has begun to wear out at some plac-es. The damage to the tar road was aggra-vated during the re-cent spell of heavy rains in the northeast monsoon season. At some spots, potholes have emerged and the surface has become uneven.

“Loose blue metal can be seen strewn around at some plac-

es. Two wheeler riders find it difficult to bal-ance while riding on some stretches. Ahead of the turning towards Mogappair West, the damage to the road’s surface is greater,” points out Pandian, a regular road user and resident of Mogappair East. At this spot, one can also see that the road’s surface is un-even posing a real threat of damage to the chassis of auto rickshaws and cars.

“Negotiating this stretch is difficult, es-pecially at night hours. Most vehicle drivers seek to avoid the pot-holes and drive on the edge of the road. The

drivers are always looking for proper motorable space to avoid damage to their vehicles. In the pro-cess, there is a mini-traffic hold up at this spot on some occa-sions,” says Muneesh, who works in a shop located on Venugopal Road.

Besides this, at some places, vehicles are also parked on ei-ther side of the Venu-gopal Road by not only local residents but also visitors. This further reduces the motorable space on the road. Nonetheless this is inevitable as there is no other dedi-cated space for park-

ing of vehicles on the stretch, point out local residents.

“Authorities of the Greater Chennai Cor-poration must under-take an inspection of such battered spots on Venugopal Road and take measures to do patch work so that motorists are not put to hardship. This needs to be done at the earliest as other-wise the damage could worsen,” said Pandian.
