Happy New Year Margate Elementary Community!

We want to welcome everyone back from what we hope was a relaxing and exhilarating vacation. This year may you enjoy the energy to pursue your dreams, the patience to wait for it, and the ability to embrace the opportunities to change your world. It is the hope of our entire Margate Elementary family that 2016 provides countless blessings to each of our families and that we have a successful second semester in which your child’s academic and social development reaches new heights.

It is hard to believe, yet January 11th marks the beginning of our third quarter. It is incredible how quickly our year is flying by and the outstanding progress our panthers have made. Our students have been busy learning so much and have truly been growing into productive citizens. Please remember to support them in all of their academic and social growth activities. We encourage you to utilize the multitude of technology resources that are available for home learning support. Our reflex math program (all grades), Achieve 3000 (fourth and fifth grade only), RAZ Kids (Kindergarten-Second Grade) programs all include home components. Additionally, we were able to purchase Accelerated Reader for our students. Students will only be able

to take tests at school, however, should be reading AR books at home. Should you have specific questions regarding classroom activities or your child’s individual academic progress, please direct these issues to the classroom

teacher who is most equipped to assist you.

As we continue to progress in this fantastic learning adventure, please be aware that the testing season will be quickly upon us. Our intermediate students will be taking a practice benchmark assessment developed by our district during the week of

January 18th. Your child’s teacher will be able to provide additional information regarding the assessment and the results should be available by the end of this month.

Finally, we invite all of our families to attend our upcoming Science Family Night with the Museum of Science and Discovery on Tuesday, January 12th starting at 6:30 p.m. We will be hosting a SAC meeting prior and will be discussing the upcoming state assessments. Please join at 6:00 p.m. for that meeting to learn vital information regarding these assessments. Have a Happy, Healthy, & Prosperous New year!

NO NAME CALLING WEEK January 18th – 22nd

If you are being called names or bullied, remember the four ways to stay SAFE:

Say What You Feel: Tell the person who is bullying you or calling you names the way their actions make you feel

Ask for Help: Sometimes you can’t handle the situation yourself, and it’s ok to ask for help. Find a teacher or other school staff member to talk to.

Find a Friend: Hanging out with people who make you feel good about yourself is important, and the person calling you names might think twice before picking on you when you’re with your friends.

Exit the Area: While it may feel like you aren’t doing anything at all, sometimes walking away from someone who is picking on you is the best way to end things.

Common  myths  about  children  who  bully.    According  to  research  (HRSA),  there  is  no  one  single  cause  of  bullying  among  children.

• “Children  who  bully  are  loners”  In  fact  they  are  not  socially  isolated  and  are  more  likely  to  have  friends  who  support  or  encourage  their  bullying

• “Children  who  bully  have  low  self-‐esteem.”    In  fact,  most  research  indicates  that  they  have  average  or  above-‐average  self-‐esteem,  so,  intervenEons  that  focus  on  building  the  self-‐esteem  probably  will  be  ineffecEve  in  stopping  bullying  behavior.
