Dear Margate Families, We are proud to say that our first round of FSA testing is completed. Our fourth and fifth grade students have successfully taken the FSA Writing portion of the ELA exam. We are all very proud of them for their hard work and dedication in demonstrating their skills on this assessment. We applaud our fourth and fifth grade teachers for all their hard work preparing our students to meet success on this exam. Our next round of assessments will take place immediately following our Spring Vacation. Please make sure to review the testing calendar located in this edition of Panther Pawprints. Important resources regarding these exams can be found at http://fsassessments.org/. Here you will find practice exams and details regarding the administration, utilization and interpretation of our high stakes tests here in Florida. Spring is an important time here at Margate Elementary. In addition to our testing season, we are also seeking your input regarding the operation of our school. This year, the entire district will participate in the AdvancEd Survey which provide us feedback regarding our accreditation standards. You can access the survey electronically and as a measure of gratitude of your participation in the survey, your child will receive 20 HERO points and the opportunity to win a $50 Gift Certificate. Your feedback is critical to our school and helps us to perfect the programs we have here at Margate Elementary. You access the survey at http://www.advanc-ed.org/survey/public/9805149 or by visiting our website at www.margateelementary.net and then clicking on the link. The AdvancEd Survey will conclude on Thursday, March 17th. Additionally, we will be asking for your input regarding our Title One Programs. This survey is separate from the AdvancEd survey and is also available electronically. To access, this survey, please visit

Each family who participates in the survey will receive an additional opportunity for a separate drawing of a gift certificate. Students will also
receive 20 HERO points. The final date for our Title One survey will be on April 1st. Please continue to help support our school through our Spring PTA fundraiser. This is a great opportunity to purchase some great items while giving back to our school community. The Spring Fundraiser will begin on Monday, March 14th and run through Tuesday, March 29th. An additional way to help out our school and have a fun-filled free afternoon is to register for the Annual Monarch Hill Energy Day on
Saturday, April 7th. The school with the greatest number of registrations and highest attendance will be awarded $3,000. Our school can win based on the attendance of our third, fourth and fifth grade students. The entire event is free and there will be food, tours, rides, etc. Please register your third, fourth, or fifth grade student at www.monarchhillearthday.com. The entire family is welcome to attend. Finally, please join us for our upcoming Spring Fling and School Advisory Council Meeting on Friday, March 11th at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. This is a great evening and all who attend have a fantastic time celebrating with our community. Please continue to support your child’s education by ensuring they complete their homework each evening, read for at least 30 minutes and access our extra electronic support programs. May each of you have an enjoyable and restful Spring Vacation. Together, working as a family, we can and will attain success. Have a super month!

Tips for Students Preparing for a Test
Remain Calm: When you have uncomfortable feelings about whether you will do well on the test, remind yourself that you can do it. Take deep breaths while trying and find an attitude of calmness about the situation. Do this in the days leading up to the test, right before and during the test.
Address the what-if questions: A lot of times before we have to do something like take a test, much of the anxiety we feel is a build-up from negative “what-if’” thoughts. Try writing a what-if question that is positive and can help you take the big deal out of the situation and begin to see things in a different way.
Think good thoughts: Science is showing that good feelings like appreciation can actually help your brain work better. When you feel nervous or anxious, try this. Let yourself feel that feeling for 10-20 seconds or more. It’s important to let yourself really feel that good feeling all over again.
Get enough sleep: Big tests require a lot of energy and stamina to be able to focus for several hours. Make sure you get at least eight-10 hours of sleep the night before the test.
Eat a hearty breakfast: The brain needs a lot of energy to maintain focus on a big test for several hours. Foods such as eggs, cereal and whole-wheat toast help energize your brain to think more clearly and much longer compared with the fast-disappearing bolt of energy from drinking a soda pop or eating a cookie for breakfast.
