We’ve come full circle. Now that George
graces the cover of this fine magazine, it’s sort of remarkable that it
was a PawPrints cover that led us to him in the first place. That cover
from August 2013 featured Rambler, a
hound dog with a sweet face. Turns out Rambler was a recent
graduate of the Pawsitive Partners
Prison Program, the wonderful offshoot of
Monty’s Home that places shelter dogs in local correctional institutions, where inmates train them in
basic obedience.
Since Rambler bore a striking resemblance to our then recently departed Rhodesian Ridgeback, Kizzy, a friend
suggested we look into adopting him.
While that didn’t work out, my wife, Mindy, and I fell in love with the prison program and wanted to support it. Soon we had our eye on a Redbone Coonhound who had just started his training. We attended an Adoption Fair and fell in love with “Sherlock” immediately. Mindy filled out a form and handed over a deposit, and all we
had to do was wait for our boy to graduate (we later found out that Sherlock/George was the fastest adopted
dog in the prison program - 10 days).
George came to us on Halloween Day, 2013 and our lives have been so filled with love since. Cover Dogs
are cool, but Rescue Dogs rule!

URGENT, URGENT! My Time Is Running
Out! I do hope my sad eyes are melting your heart - you see, I’m a fantastic girl and I’m running out of time at the shelter.
My name is Boo and I’m a brindle/white Terrier
mix who is just 2-years-old. I once lived with a family, but they moved and couldn’t take me. I
keep a very clean kennel which suggests I’m
house-trained or crate-trained and I’m soooo very friendly to people! I get along fine with other dogs and they say I have such a sweet de-meanor that I’d probably have no problem with cats. I can sit on command, too, as my photo clearly shows. Won’t you give me the second chance I deserve? Dogs arrive
every day at this shelter and there’s just not enough room for us all, so I hope you’ll hurry to come meet me! My
adoption fee includes Distemper/Parvo vaccine, Kennel Cough vaccine, Rabies Vaccine, deworming, and 30 day flea/tick treatment. The shelter is now open on Sundays,
from 1pm to 4pm, in case you can’t come during the week. It’s also open on Saturdays from Noon to 4pm. For more information, please call Pender County Animal Shelter at
910-259-1484 or email [email protected].
I am sponsored in loving memory of Hank Harrington.

My name is Madilyn and I’ve come a long way
since I first came to res-cue. I was full of youthful exuberance that I didn't
know how to channel very well. For about the past year, I’ve been in a foster home and my foster par-
ents have done a wonder-ful job. I’m a beautiful
Chocolate Labrador Re-triever mix who gets along great with the other foster
dog here. I’m an easily trainable girl who is house-trained, eager to please and food motivated. I need plenty of exer-cise but also love a good snuggle on the couch. My ideal home would be an active one as either an only dog or a sibling for another large dog. I love all people, large and
small, and I really love dog toys! I have such a loving heart and would be a great buddy for an active person or
family. Please call Carolina Poodle Rescue with any inquiries at 864-489-3559 or go to our website at
www.carolinapoodlerescue.org.
I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!
Hi! I am Momma
June. I just showed up on some-
one's door-step. It was thought that I had been hit by a car since I was only using three of my legs. I also had ticks,
fleas, grain mites, intestinal parasites, and heartworms!!! I am
currently undergoing treatment and would love to have a family who will love me as much as I would them! If you would like to donate toward my care, please go to
www.carewilmington.org and click the donate button. For updates on me and my friends, please like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/carewilmington. You can also call
910-256-2624.
I am sponsored by Atlantic Animal Hospital who supports Coastal Animal Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.).
Hi, my name is Fudge and I am
a very affectionate
Siamese girl with beautiful
blue eyes. My human mommy went to
heaven and a neighbor lady found
me starving. She started feeding me and getting me healthy again. I am spayed and I’ve had my rabies vacci-
nation. I currently live in an outdoor cage, but I'm an older girl and would really love to be a house kitty. I deserve nothing
less! I promise to keep your lap warm if you will just give me a home. Worried about your furniture? Well, I don't mind having my nails trimmed. I mean really, what girl
doesn’t love a manicure? If you’re smart and would like to meet me, grab that smart phone of yours and call
Shay at 910-512-0652. You won't regret it!
It’s me, PePe, the Shar Pei mix! Pardon me for
looking at you so intently, but I need to ask you some-
thing: will you adopt me? I’m a 6-year-old boy who is already
neutered and vac-cinated. And they
don’t come any friendlier than me! I’ve grown up with
kids and adults and we were all very happy to-gether. I even
lived with a male Pit Bull and we got
along great! Sadly, my family had to give me up, but you can be the
lucky one to take me home. I’m house-trained, I come when called, I listen well and I sit on command. (Check out my
photo for proof.) I enjoy car rides and am a playful lover of toys. I enjoy going for walks and being outside as well as living indoors with my family. I just may be the one you’ve been searching for! For driving directions or adoption info,
call Pender Humane Society at 910-259-7022.
I am sponsored in appreciation of everyone who has rescued a homeless animal.
Just look at me! I’m absolutely gorgeous and intelli-
gent to boot! You just can’t beat that special
combina-tion! My name is
Duchess (A081871)
and I’m called a ‘Tortie’. I have short hair so I don’t make much of a mess in that regard. I am spayed and come
with great feline etiquette. I’m declawed, so I won’t tear up your furniture and I’m litterbox-trained so you have no wor-ries about accidents around the house. Also, I’m used to
other cats and even those crazy dogs that people seem so attached to! We all know that “cat’s rule” - not dogs.
However, I’ve been here at Onslow County Animal Shelter way too long now so y’all need to come and bust me out of
this place. I will be eternally grateful. I’ll keep you com-pany for the rest of my days whether it be sitting on your lap or giving you those ‘sandpaper licks’ and lots of con-
tented purrs. I’m the purrfect cat! Onslow County Animal Services is located at 244 Georgetown Road in Jackson-
ville. To adopt me, please call 910-455-0182.
I am sponsored by Dan and Sue Tuman in honor of all the cats who are waiting for homes at the shelter.

SOUTHERN REPTILE SAVIORS RESCUE
My name is Dixie. I’m a female iguana and probably close to 4-years of age. I am definitely an alpha fe-
male and I do not get along with smaller iguanas. I was
adopted out once before to a nice couple. I loved it there
but something happened between my parents and I had to come back to the rescue. I’m very social and love to free roam the house. I have a huge appetite and as you can see, I like to pose for the
camera. I’m looking for someone to take me forever this time. To learn more, call Nicole at 910-470-6299. View other available iguanas at www.thepamperediguana.com
or check out our rescue on Facebook.
ONSLOW COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES
My name is Carolina (A081290) and I’m 4-years-old. They tell me I’m called a Border Collie mix but all I know is that I have lots of love and kisses to give to my human family. I have
great qualities that you will truly appreciate. I am
spayed and vaccinated, and I’m very loving and
gentle. Yeah, I have an ID # but I’d truly like to be more than a number; I’m sure you know what I mean. Come on by and give me a try. You will be delighted with who I am and the happiness I will
bring into your life. This isn’t an empty promise - just pure fact! I’m a people pleasin’, truly lovin’ canine. The shelter is located at 244 Georgetown Road in Jacksonville. If you
would like to adopt me, please call 910-455-0182.
ALL 4 CATS
Hi! My name is Ruby. In case you couldn't tell, I am a girl. I love, love, love to play. I know someone will appreci-ate my sense of humor and
endless talents with a mouse on a string. You can't tell in my profile photo, but I have cute little white socks on my paws - I stole them from my foster mom while she was
folding laundry (snicker). I am not fond of little humans, they
scare me (don’t they scare you, too)? I am spayed, vacci-nated and microchipped. To adopt me, call 919-710-3872
or check out www.facebook.com/all4catsrescue for upcoming events where we can meet.
OPERATION TOPCAT
My name is Maya and I’m a very beautiful
female Siamese who is 2-years-
old. I really know what I like
and that is to be admired and pampered! I love to be the center of attention and would be best as an only cat. I love being petted and like my comfy beds and treats. I also love a tall cat tree to play on. I tested negative for FIV/FeLV and I’m vaccinated, spayed and microchipped. If you can pro-
vide me with the lifestyle I desire, please call 910-200-0612 or email [email protected] to schedule a visit with me.
I will return your love!
PENDER ENDANGERED ANIMAL RESCUE
Hello, will you give me a sec-ond chance? My name is
Rosebud and I am an Ameri-can Staffordshire Terrier. I am a young lady and just as
beautiful as I can be. I love to be around people and am full
of energy and love. I was dumped here at the rescue, just thrown away like I was
nothing. Luckily, the rescue wanted me and now I am
safe. I am up to date on all shots and ready for my new family. I won’t take up that much room and will give you
lots of attention in return. Please email my friends at [email protected] or call them at 910-675-0867.
FUREVER FRIENDS ANIMAL RESCUE
My name is Valentine and
I’m a 3-year-old girl who weighs 40 pounds. I’m
a loving and calm Shepherd mix who enjoys being around humans and other dogs. I
required surgery to repair a dislo-
cated hip after I’d been hit by a car. I’ve healed nicely and I’m feeling great now. I was diagnosed with heartworms but Furever Friends Animal Rescue will take care of and
pay for my treatment. Sure would be nice to have a family to love. I promise to never leave you alone on a busy
highway. Please call 910-383-2100 for more info.

A SHELTER FRIEND
I plan to win the lottery this month - when you realize
that we belong together and take me home. My name is Cooper and I am intelligent and affectionate - in fact I
crave human contact! I am happy and healthy. I have SharPei in my heritage and when people meet me, they always comment about how gorgeous I am. I’ve had pro-fessional obedience-training and want to show you how proudly we can walk together for our daily exercise. Of course, I am neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm
preventative. Please call or text Emily at 910-862-1806 to learn even more about me today! You can visit A Shelter Friend online at www.AShelterFriend.org or on Facebook
at www.facebook.com/ashelterfriend.
PAWSITIVE PARTNERS PRISON PROGRAM
Spice up your life with some Paprika! Yes, my name is
Paprika and I am a beautiful, 1-year-old female Shepherd
mix. I am currently part of the Pawsitive Partners Prison Pro-gram where I am learning all
my basic obedience com-mands and good doggy man-ners. My friends say I am en-ergetic and playful, but also
quite gentle. For adoption info, visit Monty’s Home online at
www.montyshome.org, email at [email protected], or call 910-297-1338. “Like” Monty’s Home on Facebook at

PET FRIEND OF DUPLIN COUNTY
I'm Gray, a 15-year-old, declawed girl and this is my 10-year-old sister, Cheeky (pictured below me). We were the much loved pets of a couple who passed
away within one years time. We're now looking for homes and we can be
adopted together or sepa-rately. We are heartbroken over losing our parents and are eager to start loving on
our new families. We're affectionate, quiet girls who are both spayed and up to date on vaccinations. The vet has given us thorough examinations and we’re
very healthy with no medi-cal conditions. We have a
lot of wonderful years ahead of us. If you would like to adopt one or both of us, please call Pet Friends
of Duplin County at 910-285-4155.
COASTAL ANIMAL RESCUE EFFORT (C.A.R.E.)
Hello! My name is Hope and I am ready to go
home with you! I am a sweet, playful girl who likes activity. I love to play with toys, chase
strings and investigate new things. But I also like to curl up for a good nap!
If you are interested in adopting me, please call
910-256-2624. For updates on me and my friends, please like us

COLUMBUS HUMANE SOCIETY
Allow me to introduce myself - I am Booker T. Dogg and I have
been in foster care for over a year. I was
once returned from an adoptive home be-
cause I jumped up on the 3-year-old and
accidentally scratched him. I am a muscular guy and I didn’t do it
on purpose. I am sexy and muscular and chicks dig me - but my exuberance is a little too much for small children. I love them, though - I
really love humans great and small. I am capable of great, warm emotion when it comes to people. I love to run and chase balls, and I am crazy about big old chewing bones. I am better behaved when I am sufficiently exercised but I love me some snuggling on the couch and watching col-
lege basketball, too. I just love that Georgia bulldog, don’t you? Anyway, I am happy and healthy and crate-trained and I’m heartworm negative and up to date on shots. Be-cause I have been in foster care for a loooong time, my
adoption fee has been reduced if the right family will step up to take me. For information, please contact my Colum-
bus Humane Society foster mom, Jennifer, by emailing [email protected] or by calling 910-619-3015.

URGENT, URGENT! My Time Is Running Out! I’m a happy, friendly and
playful boy - how can some-one who loves life so much be running out of time? I once was part of a loving family, but the landlord
wouldn’t allow me and my owner brought me here in
tears, telling everyone what a fantastic boy I am. My
name is Diesel (A015687) and I’m a 2-year-old Terrier
who is ready to brighten your life and make your house a home. I get along great
with everyone - adults, children, dogs and cats - and I love to go for walks. My former owner said I am great with the
neighborhood dogs. I’ve been melting the hearts of all who meet me because I have such a light-hearted and playful approach to life and I enjoy meeting everyone. Won’t you please give me a second chance at a loving family? Dogs
arrive every day and there’s just not room for us all, so please hurry! My adoption fee includes Distemper/Parvo
vaccine, Kennel Cough vaccine, Rabies Vaccine, deworm-ing, and 30 day flea/tick treatment. The shelter is now open on Sundays, from 1pm to 4pm, in case you can’t come dur-
ing the week. It’s also open on Saturdays from Noon to 4pm. For more info, call Pender County Animal Shelter at

Adopt-An-ANGEL
►My name is Laney and I am a real doll. I am an older Walker Hound who weighs
about 40 pounds. I do well with kids, dogs
and cats. I am super lazy and low mainte-nance. I have been
with Adopt-An-ANGEL for almost 5-months
now, but being rescued by this group was the best thing that ever
happened to me. When Animal Control picked me up at the dump at 421, I was dying. They had to carry me since I was too weak to walk. I was in borderline kidney failure due to starvation. I was handfed small portions over the next few weeks. Adopt-An-ANGEL continued to meet my vet care
needs over the next few months. They helped me gain over 15 pounds, have done several bloodwork exams to monitor
my care, treated me for internal parasites, treated me for heartworms, had two teeth extracted and provided me with a dental. I am independent and don’t seek out attention. I am content to be quiet and next to my people. I find all kinds of
cute places to make nests to sleep in. I sleep in laundry bas-kets, car seats or anywhere cozy since I am a survivor and this is what I did when I lived as a stray on the streets. I am full of personality that will make you laugh. I am what a real rescue story is all about - and my story is still not finished. It
waits for that happy ending that only you can provide.
◄My name is Bella and I am 4-years-old. My mom is Precious
and she is 7-years-old. We are a bonded pair of Chihuahuas who
absolutely cannot be separated. We sleep together, eat together, cuddle together and
lost our home to-gether. Our mom is
88-years-old and recently went into a
nursing home. She would be devastated (and so would we) if we were placed with separate families. There have been lots of people willing to take one of us, but that's not what
we need. We are dainty, little dogs who are afraid of small kids, so we need a home with kids over 10. We were very afraid and under-socialized when we came into rescue, but that's all behind us now. We are really friendly and wag our
whole little bodies when we see people we know. We do well with other animals and are house-trained, spayed, and heartworm negative. Is there anyone out there who could
adopt the two of us? Our adoption fees have been reduced to keep us together.
►My name is Lou and I am a brindle Boxer mix. I am very sweet, but would be
best suited in a home without other pets. I am a bossy girl who wants you all to myself. I am house-trained, spayed and up to
date on my vaccinations. I am about 2-years-old and
weigh 55 pounds. I ran out of time at Pender Animal Shelter and a foster home
stepped up and took me in. I have an out-going, friendly personality and I aim to please.
◄My name is Blue and I am a purebred pale-blue Pit Bull. I am absolutely gorgeous. I weigh 65 pounds and I am very strong. I will need a home with a strong
person who can handle me. I am a love and am super friendly. I
was found running loose in Duplin County, was picked up as a stray
and then ran out of time at the shelter. I am neutered, heart-
worm negative and have all my vaccinations. Since I am so pow-erful, the rescue group would like
me to be an only pet. They do not know my history and can't be sure if I was raised with other pets or not. A home visit
will be required and the adopter must have previous experi-ence with my breed. Local adopters only (Wilmington, NC
area). You can come see me at Petco on weekends.
◄My name is Belle and I am a vision-
impaired Black Lab/Pit mix who is
homeless. I’ve had a rough life so far, having lived my life in a junk yard, but
you can help change that. I can’t see very well so I
can't find my family. Please share your eyes with me and help me. I cannot
see out of one eye and I only see shadows out of my other. I am a gentle, funny, easy dog who gets along with cats
and dogs. I do need a patient, stable, quiet family because of my rough start. I need someone who doesn’t have a lot
of company in and out. I like to carry tennis balls and hoard toys! I am house-trained, fixed, vaccinated and
heartworm negative.
Hello there, my name is Pepper!
I have a sad story to tell you, but I’m sure one day the ending will be a happy one! You see, I was found aban-doned in a ditch in Hampstead. When I got to
the vet’s office, they discovered that I am also
blind. But wait! Just like they say, there is a silver lining to every cloud. Mine is that I can still see
shadows and I can walk around just fine. I tilt my head in order to see better and sense what’s around me. I am a very sweet boy who absolutely loves all people. I do well with other dogs, too (girls especially), as long as we are introduced slowly. In fact, I would probably benefit from another dog in the home to act as my ’seeing eye dog’. I
am young, between 12 and 18-months-old, and I weigh 40 pounds. Contact Pender Humane Society if you are inter-
ested in adopting me! Their number is 910-259-7022.
I am sponsored by Mr. Peanut and Ginger Snap.

◄Howdy! My name is Kramer (A077604) and boy, oh boy, do I have some good news for you! I am available for adop-tion! This is cause to celebrate as I am a sweet puppy, just 6-months-old, and I’m smart as a whip if I do say so myself! If you’re in need of some puppy love, hurry on over today!
◄Hello, friends! I’m Jasmine (A077435) and I am a 70 pound Golden Retriever mix, just 3-years-old. If you are looking for a smart young lady with high ambitions and eagerness to please, then look no further! Every-one knows what great companions Golden Retrievers are, so I can’t quite figure out why I’m here. Come on over and let’s see if we’re a match!
◄Looking for a lover boy to fill your days and nights with purrs and cuddles? Well, come meet me! Hi guys! I am the handsome and friendly Johnny (A073564). My fur is a silky grey - not short and not long - just a nice medium length perfect for stroking. I would love to see your face at my door today. Come on over, please!
◄Hi, everyone! My name is Sam (A077339) and I am looking for a warm window sill to lay in and a friendly pat on the head from time to time. Can you do those things for me? If so, let’s have a get-together at the shelter real soon! I’m a 2-year-old orange Tabby boy who is already neu-tered. Let’s go!
►Hello there! I’m Princess Gloria (A077488) and if
you're looking for a silly young woman to keep your days youthful, look no
further! I’m a 2-year-old Calico beauty with stun-ning green eyes
that go so well with my multi-colored
coat! I hope you’ll hop in the car and come meet me. You won’t regret it!
►Hey! My name is Karma (A077216)
and I am a 45 pound German Shepherd mix.
I’m just 2-years-old and fully grown, so if
you’re looking for a ‘petite’ girl with the
look of a German Shepherd, I fit the bill!
As you can see, I come instilled with a lot of good qualities
but my best quality is my ability to impress everyone I meet with my attentiveness and
beauty. Come see me!

Dachshund lovers, rejoice! I am right
here waiting for you. My name is Hershey and I’m a little sweet-heart, just 7-years-
old. I once was part of a loving family, but my human mom is in
the hospital and is hoping a very kind
and wonderful person will give me a new
home. I’m a little girl who is spayed and
vaccinated. I'm great on a leash and I love to go for walks. I’m very friendly to other
dogs and I even lived with a kitten named Luna. That’s her pictured on this page. (We can be adopted together or
separately.) All I want is to be held and loved. That’s not so much to ask, now is it? So when are you coming to
meet me? Please call Pender Humane Society at 910-259-7022 and let’s see if we’re a match.
I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange
in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!
Adorable Kitten Alert! My name is Luna and I’m a
petite, 6-month-old Tortoise-shell girl who is - quite sim-ply - a lover. I adore people so very much. My purring motor gets started as soon
as you walk through the door. I was purring when this photo was taken! I
once lived in a loving home, but my human mom is now in the hospital. It’s her most
fervent wish that I find a wonderful person or family
to give me the forever home I deserve. I get along well
with dogs, too! In fact, I lived with Hershey, the Dachshund who is pictured on this page. (We can be adopted together
or separately, we’ll be happy either way.) I’m already spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. All I need is a lap to cuddle in, arms to hold me and folks who will cherish me forever. Can we get started soon? Call Pender Humane
Society at 910-259-7022 today!
Sponsored in memory of Milo, the big black dog who stole our hearts! Mommy and Daddy miss you every day!

◄I'm Bert, a 7-month-old boy. Ernie, my brother, is pictured
below. We're best buds. Of
the two, I'm the more
playful one, but I'm also
sweet and loving. I'm a bit protective of Ernie because he's still a little shy. Please adopt us together! It would make me so sad to leave my brother behind. Will you
make a little space in your home for the two of us?
◄Black and white and cute and sweet. They call me Oreo. I'm a 1-year-old tuxedo female. I am a very sweet and friendly girl with excellent grooming habits. My fur is soft like a bunny. I get along well with others, too. I've been spayed and vaccinated, so I'm ready to go. If you're interested, please stop by Petsmart in Wilmington soon and take me home with you before someone else falls in love with me!
◄Hi, my name is Ernie! I'm a
7-month-old boy. My brother,
pictured above, is Bert. He's
basically my best friend and protects me just like a big
brother, so it's really important to
me that you adopt us together. I'm still really shy, but I was starting to come out of my shell in my foster home. I'm a very calm lap kitty, and I love taking naps! If you can be patient with me, you'll quickly see how very sweet I am. Hope you're ready to let two sweet boys into your life!
◄Hi, I'm Maggie! I'm a really playful girl with character. I'm not too
much of a snuggler, but I'm sure to keep you
entertained. I've lived with cats and dogs and have been around chil-
dren, too, but I'd do best in a home with children
ages 10 and older and no other pets. The volunteers here tell me
that it's about time that I get my forever home where I can receive all the love and attention I deserve! Let’s go!
►Hey there, I'm Silver! I'm a gray Tabby girl, about 1 to
2-years-old. I'm kind of
shy, but with lots of love, I can become
the wonderful cat the
people here know that I am. I also love playing and appreciate being petted, but I would
probably do best in a more mellow environment where I can warm up to you and your family at a pace that feels comfortable to me. If you want to see just how pretty
and lovely I am, visit me at the adoption center!
◄Hi, my name is Maddie! I'm a
3½-year-old white and brown Tabby. I'm extremely sweet and would love snuggling
with you on the couch. I also love playing and lying in the sunshine.
I'm a bit shy at first, but I'll warm up to you in no time! I'm a little sensi-tive to certain foods, so
I'll need you to pay a little extra attention to my diet. Just ask the friendly people here and they'll be glad to help. Also, being stuck in this
cage day after day is turning me into one sad kitty. I hope you're the one who will give me a home soon full of love,
warmth, and happy times!

My name is Banjo, and I am a proud graduate of the Pawsitive Partners Prison Program. That means I
am more than just a handsome, 1-year-old
male Plott Hound - I am also well-behaved and know all my basic com-mands, and I have a di-ploma to prove it! My in-mate trainers and the vol-unteers at Monty’s Home have all pitched in to get me ready for my forever
home. Want a top dog who graduated with top honors? Then I am the dog for you! For more information on adoption, please contact Monty’s Home online at
www.montyshome.org, email [email protected], or call at 910-297-1338. You can also “like” Monty’s Home on
Facebook at www.facebook.com/montyshome.
Special thanks to Connie at DogSpeak for helping me find my forever home!
Hello there! My name is Tripod Jack. I’ve not had an easy 5-years of life, but you would never know it by
my sweet disposition! I was living as an indoor/outdoor kitty when I was
attacked by a coyote! Un-fortunately, the doctors
were not able to save my back leg which had been
mangled in the attack. Also, while at the doctor’s office, it was discovered that I’m FIV positive. But all this is no problem for
me! I get along just great on three legs and I can live a long, normal life with FIV, just like any other kitty who is treated well in a loving home. I’m
just a big ol' love bucket who loves to play and get head rubs - so please come out and meet me! For driving direc-tions or more information about adopting an FIV cat, please
call SOAR at 910-457-6340.
I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of all their wonderful, furry friends who made it
safely to the Rainbow Bridge.

Cat Tails
◄Sid Vicious was so outra-geous, but I am the exact opposite, I’m quiet com-
posed, some say timid. But look out; be-cause once I get to know you there is no stopping
me! I am a bit of a prima donna and
like to be the only cat. I am
a youngster at just 5-month-old and even if you can’t see in a black and white picture, I am a ravishing shade of orange.
◄You would think with a name like Garnett that I would be an orange kitty, but nope, you’d be wrong. I am a lovely tuxedo female. I used to hang around with my sister Gussie, but she got too possessive of me, so I moved away. Now I am flourishing and everyone sees how friendly I really am. I am just 1-year-old so there is a lot of time for us to be together.
►Don’t confuse me with a chicken ‘cause all we have
in common is a name, Perdue. Chickens have feathers and I
have fur, chickens have beaks and
I have a cute mouth, and chick-ens don’t like to
snuggle as much as I do! I am a
9-month-old, white skinny kitty, who is
very playful and loves people but I’m not crazy about other cats. So leave
the other cats and chickens elsewhere.
◄Watson, come quickly I need you. That’s what Bell said but in reality, you need me. I
am a 6-year-old male who is black and
white, tall and thin, very
active and playful. I’ve been waiting
around quite awhile to find a home. I keep waiting for the phone to ring. Won’t you be the one to phone me home?
►Elvis has left the building, but I
really haven’t. I’m sitting here shak-ing, rattling and
rolling, singing my heart out! I’m a younger Elvis, before the fat days, a cute
self-reliant Tabby, once again before my over indulgent stage. I love at-tention, but like
Elvis, only when I want it. So at 30-months-old we have quite a bit of time to spend together.
►It’s spring-time so you should be
thinking of me, Buttercup.
We come out in the spring
and if you hold one of us un-der your chin
the orange will reflect onto you. Okay,
maybe since I’m a cat that won’t work, but you could try. I am a 6-year-old, female Tabby with white patches. Living with these other cats
stresses me out and so I occasionally pluck some fur out, but don’t worry it grows back. And if I get out of this
place, I promise I’ll stop.
URGENT, URGENT! My Time Is Running
Out! There’s something not
right with the world when a well-behaved girl like me
finds herself running out of time! I mean, just check
me out. This is what I look like when you ask me to
‘sit’ for a treat. That’s why my tongue is out - I really
wanted to taste it! My name is Misty (A010012)
and I’m a 2-year-old, blue and white Terrier girl who is al-ready spayed. I used to live in a home so I am also house-
trained! I am friendly to children and other dogs and I’m great on a leash. The shelter workers say I am also a
quiet, sweet girl. Won’t you come to the shelter and meet me? Bring some treats so you can see what a great lis-
tener I am. I will take them so gently from your fingers, too! But you must hurry - dogs arrive at the shelter every day and there is not enough room for us all. My adoption fee
includes Distemper/Parvo vaccine, Kennel Cough vaccine, Rabies Vaccine, deworming, and 30 day flea/tick treatment. The shelter is now open on Sundays, from 1pm to 4pm, in case you can’t come during the week. It’s also open on
Saturdays from Noon to 4pm. For more information, please call Pender County Animal Shelter at 910-259-1484
or email [email protected].

◄My beauty will take your breath away! You’ll see what I mean when you come visit. My name is Sampson and I’m a 5-year-old Samoyed who is house-trained and friendly to children. I’ve never lived with a dog or cat. I’m used to sleeping inside with my family and playing in the fenced-in yard. I know basic commands, too. Let’s get together in the play yard real soon!
Please call about our low cost spay/neuter program.

►Hello! My name is Penny and I'd love to have the chance to
meet you. I’m a 3-year-old, 76 pound, Rottie
mix girl who is already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm preven-tion. I’m still getting
used to shelter life, but one thing they’ve no-ticed is I sure do love
stuffed squeaky toys! I don’t tear them up - no,
no - I’m very careful with them and treat
them gently. I would do well in a home with adults-only or teenag-ers (I’m a little big for small kids) and I have a special fond-ness for women. I like to keep my kennel clean, I do not dig and I play nicely inside a fenced-in yard. Bobby, pictured on this page, has become my best friend - we play together a
lot. I’ll be glad to take some time out to meet you, however!
►I’m ready to settle right in because I’m so well-
trained! My name is Bobby and I’m a 5-year-
old Walker Hound mix boy who is house-trained,
friendly to children, friendly to cats, friendly to
dogs and I’ll even sit for treats! I play nicely in a fence and, if you adopt
me, I have two beds, some heartworm preven-
tion pills and some flea prevention stuff that
comes with me. Nice!
◄Yes, this is what a talking cat looks like. My name is Lily and I was so happy to see folks at my cage door that I couldn’t stop giving sweet little mews. I’m a 2-year-old, spayed girl with beautiful gray fur. I am such a good girl - I like other cats, I like children and I even get along with friendly dogs! As for my health, I’m spayed, litterbox-trained and up to date on shots. Visit me and let’s fall in love, okay?
►Hello! My name is Candy
and I’m a 5-year-old, spayed girl who is ready to
find a loving home with
wonderful folks. You see, my
owners moved away and
brought me and my brother, Panther, to the shelter. He’s also pictured on this page. I’m used to being inside-only and lived with a 12-year-old child. I sure would like to show you what a terrific new family member I would be. Visit me today!
►I’m a sleek, handsome,
black-haired boy so it’s no wonder
my name is Panther! I
arrived at the shelter with my sister, Candy,
also pictured on this page. Our owners had to
move away and couldn’t take us with them. I’m used to living indoors-only and I get along well with other cats and older kids. I purr and purr while being petted. Won’t you come visit me?

◄Would you be interested in adopting an inside-only cat who is spayed, vacci-nated and has lived with other cats? My name is Frannie (A319197) and I’m 6-years-old and ready to move in with you today. My owner surrendered me because they could no longer afford a pet. I’m a sweet and loving girl and I really enjoy being held. Please consider opening your heart and home to me. I really need you.
►My name is Charlie (A318990) and I’m a Chesa-
peake Bay Retriever mix with a huge list of fabulous qualities.
I’m good on a leash, I’m a great listener, I will sit and lay down on command, I’m kennel-trained, I’m already neutered and vaccinated, and I’ve got a wonderful disposition and gen-tle nature. When I came to the
shelter, I had an infection in one of my toes. The wonderful
staff took care of me for the past several weeks, even giv-ing me foot baths and massages. I’m all healed up now
and ready to find a forever family. I’m a happy fellow who is good with other dogs and cats, I love playing in water, I
enjoy showing off in agility courses and I’m quite the enter-tainer. I’m also what some folks call a ‘leaner dog’ meaning
I will sit next to you and lean in for love. Call the shelter and tell them you’re the one for me.
► My name is Golden (A319864) and I’m a 1-year-old
orange Tabby. I’m a playful, spunky and handsome guy.
My family had to surrender me because they could no longer afford to care for a pet. They brought me here to the shelter with the hope that I’ll be able to
find a forever home. I love playing with toys and having
fun, I’m goofy and very entertaining, and I’m a social
butterfly who loves to be rubbed. I’ve only lived as an inside cat and I’m familiar with dogs. If that all sounds
good to you, I hope you will come adopt me!
►My name is Kori (A319596)
and I’m the mother of
Bowie (pictured on the left). I
had a home but was left to fend
for myself when everyone moved away. I’m a beautiful Calico who’s
3-years of age and I’ve been spayed and vaccinated. Unfortunately, I’m having a much harder time than most abandonded pets.
I’m so upset by it that I pulled some of the hair off of my tail (insert sad face emoticon here). When I do feel safe, I’m a purry girl and expert biscuit maker. I’m also one of those
kitties who will lift up to meet your hand to be petted. Please save me and help heal my broken heart.
►Please don’t overlook me because I
have black fur. That
would be very shallow and unfortunate
because you will be miss-
ing out on one amazing com-
panion. My name is
Edgar (A319722) and I love to be petted. I’m laid-back and cuddly, I’m a pro at making biscuits, and I’m a handsome love bug. I’m a purr machine and the kind of kitty who will
seek you out to show you love. At only 2-years of age, we’ll have lots of time to love on each other.
◄Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes. My name is Bowie (A319599) and I’ve had some pretty big changes in my life. To sum it up, I was abandoned and it sucked but I haven’t let it stop me from being the uber friendly and playful guy I was meant to be. I love to be rubbed and will lift my head up to nuzzle into your hand. I’m a 1-year-old boy who’s a very nice guy. If you can provide me with love and lots of kitty toys, let’s make this adoption happen.

My name is Molly Girl. Do you see the sadness in my eyes...it’s because I just don't understand why I do not have a home any-
more. Situations change, I guess, and my family preferred a new puppy along with a new baby over having me in their lives. I am a
beautiful girl of 7-years and 25 pounds who is calm, house-trained, leash and crate-trained, fully vetted and a top of the class graduate of Petsmart Training Center. I get along with other dogs and all I want is to be your devoted loving companion. If you love Cockers, you will certainly love me! Call my foster mom, Laura,
at 910-467-2756. Professional Photography by http://flashphotostudios.zenfolio.com/
My name is Snuggles and I'm looking for my forever home! My previous owner abandoned me when I was injured and I had no food or shelter. Thankfully my foster mom was able to work with OCPAW
to get medical care for my sprained leg that is all better now! I'm neutered, tested negative for any feline diseases, and up to date on all my shots. Despite all I've been through, I'm such a sweetie! The veterinarian who treated me couldn't stop bragging about how, even
though I was hurt, I never tried to scratch her or got upset. I was even calm during all my shots and tests! I just kept purring! I'm very affec-
tionate, and at close to 2-years of age, I like my naps! Don't let my sleeping fool you though, I still love to play and I even like riding in the
car! To give me my forever home, contact Kyla at 662-372-1427.
Sato is a Puerto Rican slang term referring to a mixed breed dog. Due to a combination of economic, social, and cultural factors, Puerto Rico has a terrible problem of animal overpopulation, abandonment, abuse, and neglect, meaning that abandoned satos can be found everywhere, struggling to survive on the streets, beaches, and commercial centers. Because of satos' out-of-control numbers and people's view of them as
a public menace and are sometimes the victims of abuse such as burning and drowning. Myra adopted Jennifer, a certified & licensed therapy counselor who was living in Puerto Rico for the past year, but
will be coming back home to New Jersey in a few weeks with her adopted Sato Angel. She is doing all she can to help this other dog Mya who has been abandoned and will have no hope if not adopted. Can you help us help get her find a forever home here where she will be loved and safe from harm? Myra is a sweet 7-month-old, 45 pound female Red Dobie Mix who is regal, friendly, happy, and has shown no aggressions. She is spayed, crate-trained, leash-trained, house-trained and on flea and heartworm preventative. She is highly intelligent and
learns commands quickly. She loves to run in big open spaces and gets along well with other dogs. She is thriving with lots of love and companionship and will make a super companion.

Hey there! My name is Haley and I’d like to tell you a little bit about my-self. Brunswick
County Sheriff’s De-partment came and rescued a bunch of dogs from a hoard-ing situation and I
was one of them. I then came to Paw’s Place with several
other dogs. The vet places my age at about 5-years-old.
Since my arrival I’ve had my teeth
cleaned and I’ve been microchipped and spayed. I’m a small Shepherd mix
girl who loves people and other dogs. It is so wonderful to romp and run around after being in a crate most of the time. I
have beautiful coloring and a very soft coat. I know a loving family is out there looking for me – they just need to
come to Paw’s Place to find me! The shelter is open every day from 9am until Noon. You can also call 910-
845-7297 for driving directions or more info on me.
I am sponsored in loving memory of Grace Harrington.
Three Orange Tabbies and One Calico Need
Loving Homes!
We are Dog Lovers, Cat Lovers, Kid Lovers…
there’s practically nothing we won’t cuddle with! We are Tang, Naval and Sunkist,
9-month-old kitten boys who are laid-back and affection-ate. Confetti is our sweet Calico friend. Our foster mom has had us spayed/
neutered and vaccinated. If a friendly, purry, family lap cat is what you’re looking for, call our foster mom Jackie at 910-389-3540.
She’ll be happy to tell you even more about us!
I know you have not seen anything cuter than me - my foster
mommy tells me so all the time! I am Poppy and I am 10-years-old. I had a really rough life
before the rescue found me. I was skin and bones and had to get some teeth pulled - but I am so happy now. I like to talk (I don't call it barking - I converse if
you will listen!), eat treats, sleep in the sun,
and run around the house. Recently, I developed a cough
and did not feel well. My foster mom found out I had congestive heart failure. I
was put on medication and have never felt or sounded better. I have a new ‘leash on life’ and I will enjoy every
moment because I’m moving and shaking better than ever. Okay, so maybe it wasn't the greatest news but I
won't let that get me down - and it shouldn't stop you from meeting me! To adopt me, call Carolinas Russell Rescue at 910-821-3504 and leave a message or you can send an
email to [email protected].
I am sponsored in loving memory of Oscar and Madison Pour, two very special,
life changing Jack Russell Terriers.
My name is Bella and I am a wonderful cat. I am calm, low-key,
and will be a little shy until I gain confidence
in my new home. I am playful but don't
demand to play. I like to be petted and to cuddle, but I won’t
demand your atten-tion. I like to spend much of my day in a
comfortable spot look-ing out of the window,
especially on nice days when there are birds and lizards and bugs to watch. For a while, there was an-other cat in my foster
home. He thought that we should play and roughhouse together. I was really happy when he found his forever
family. Even though I would rather be an only cat, I do OK with well-behaved dogs. It took me about 2-weeks to get comfortable being around the two big dogs who live in my
foster home. Now I am pretty sure that I’m the boss of them. If you’d like to know more about me, give Adopt-An-
ANGEL a call at 910-392-0557.
I am sponsored in honor of all the wonderful foster mommies and daddies who care
for homeless animals.

I’ve got a heart full of love and
I’m ready to give it to you! My
name is Danny Boy and I was picked up by
Animal Control as a stray.
Everyone was so surprised to see an adorable dog like me wander-ing the street all alone. They tell me I’m a Cocker Spaniel and Poo-dle mix - quite a beautiful combo! Pender Humane Society now has
me and we’re looking for my future family. I’m a 3-year-old boy who is
neutered and vaccinated. I walk well on a leash, I haven’t made any messes in my kennel, and I love people. I may be a tad shy for about a second, but then I’ll climb up in
your lap if you let me. I’m quite the show-stopper with my Poodle-like hair and my Cocker Spaniel face. Wouldn’t you
like to take me home? Call Pender Humane Society at 910-259-7022 and tell them you’re coming to meet me! A groomer has volunteered to spruce me up, so you can see

▲Everyone loves puppies, right? We are Oreo and Romeo, two adorable boys waiting for puppy-loving
adopters. We’re not sure what we’re mixes of, but we’re darned cute! We are microchipped, neutered, vaccinated
and ready to go! You can come visit us any day from 9am to Noon. Just ask for the cute black and white pups!
▲These kisses could be for you! I’m Valentine and another Valentine’s Day has come and gone and I still don’t have my own family. I’m a 4-year-old Hound who loves frolicking around with other dogs, but I really love people. I have soooo much love to give, if I would just be given a chance. You can visit me any time at the
kennel between 9am and Noon, every day!
◄My name is Anna and we think I’m a Feist mix. In case you are not sure what that is, it’s a similar breed to a Jack Russell or a Rat Terrier. I was found on the streets with my sister. I’m less than a year old and
weigh about 25 pounds. I probably won’t get much
bigger. I love it when I get lots of attention. My sister
has found her forever home and now I’m hoping
that I won’t have to wait too much longer for my forever
family. Please come visit to find out more about me!
◄My name is Dudley and I came to Paw’s
Place in a round-about sort of way. A family rescued me from a county shelter and
brought me home to be part of their family. But
the other 4-legged animals in the house
wanted no part of me. I was very sad because I thought I now had regular play-mates. I am about 4-years-old, less than 25 pounds and still quite playful. I do get along with other pets, but the
people at Paw’s Place recommends that we should meet first. So what do you say – should we set up a play date?
◄Hello Dolly! That’s what everyone says when they meet me. I’m back at
Paw’s Place through no fault of my own. You see, my family went through a divorce and now I need a
new family. I’m about 5-years-young. I love
people, other dogs and I adore kids – I was even dressed in a tutu for a
birthday party once. So if you think I am the right match for your family,
come on out to meet me and sing the words to the song, “Well, Hello Dolly!”
◄Hi, folks! I’m Lady, a 1-year-old Beagle mix. My owner went off to school and real-
ized that she didn’t have time for me, so here I am at Paw’s
Place. I’m smallish, about 30 pounds, and I can be a cuddler as well as having lots of energy. I get along with most dogs, but I’m not too thrilled
with cats. Of course, if you have another
dog and you think you might want to adopt me, it would be a good idea for us to meet first. So come on out and
ask for the little Lady. See you soon!

even talk to you when you pass by. Adopt me!

longer and I needed to have a dental and get all my vac-

and up to date and I can't be happier! I am 10-years
young and a zippy, spirited and joy-filled boy! I love to run and if it squeaks, it is
MINE! I love my Kong, my chewies, treats - did I say
treats? Can you take me for long walks and snuggle? I love to snuggle! I do tricks to get my food, and I know
how to sit. I am a true Jack, so don't fault me for my en-

may not have had the best experience with men. I can't wait to find my forever home! If you would like to know

Thank you!
When my own-ers in Hamp-stead moved
away, I was left behind! Luckily, one of the volun-teers at Pender Humane Society saw my situation and fed me for several weeks until there was room for me at
the shelter. (She would have
loved to keep me, but her house was
already full.) They call me
Sweet Charlie because I have
the most laid-back and friendly personality that anyone could hope for in a kitty. It’s quite obvious that I’m used to
being taken care of and would be quite comfortable being a member of the family again. How anyone could leave me behind is a mystery! I am a boy, about 4-years-old, neu-
tered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I get along with the other cats at the shelter and I enjoy snuggling in cozy cat
beds and being petted. To find out if you and I are a match, call Pender Humane Society at 910-259-7022.

◄Pet me, pet me! My name is Jasmine and I’m a true sweetheart. I prefer to sit in your lap or be held while you do your work. You don’t mind, right? I just love getting attention from humans. My purr does not stop! When I was a stray kitten, I walked up to a lady and began rubbing against her leg. Turned out she was a volunteer at the shelter! I’m now 9-months-old and cannot understand why I haven’t been snatched up.
◄My name is Levi and I’m a very loving boy, just 1-year-old. I weigh in at
a perfectly sized 45 pounds - not too big and not too small - and they tell me I’m a Shepherd/
Lab mix. I just know that I will make you happy because I’m friendly,
calm and I listen to com-mands, such as ‘sit’. I
play well with other dogs and enjoy taking walks in the sunshine with volun-teers. Please come to
the shelter and meet me today. We can get to know one another and fall in love!
►Talk about close calls! I was rescued on the very day I was
about to be euthanized at an Animal Control in another county. That
was a very lucky day for me, and now I’m hoping
for another fortunate day, the day when I meet my new family! I’m Cinnamon and
I’m a very sweet and friendly girl. I’d be great
in a home with kids ages 10 and older
(since I’m playful like a puppy) and I’m happy to be with other medium to large dogs. I’m just 1-year-old and ready to start my new life!
►Looking for a sweet
cuddle partner?
Ask for me, Ruby! I’m a 2-year-old spayed girl who is up to
date on shots and litterbox-trained. I just adore people, even though I was abandoned by my owner. A great neighbor kept me fed and warm until I could come to the shelter. I love
to be petted and enjoy meeting new people. I also interact happily with the other cats here. Won’t you be my next visitor?
◄They call me Champ! I’m ready to enjoy Spring with my new best friend. Are you? I’m a 1½-year-
old Shepherd mix who never meets a stranger. I am very friendly and I love to run and play. A
fenced yard would be great! I’m a big boy,
about 70 pounds, and I’m already neutered
and vaccinated. I know how to sit and stay on command and I learn very
quickly. I’ll be such a wonderful companion for any lucky person or family. Come to the shelter and meet me!
◄I’m a darling Calico kitten girl and my name is Sunshine! I’m a precious beauty who loves to play and be held. In my foster home, I adored my foster dad and would jump in the recliner with him for some lap time. Do you have a cozy spot in your house where we can cuddle? I’m healthy, friendly, purry and ready for home life again!

The Judges’ Decisions Are In: Winning Cover Dog and Runners-Up
Winning Cover Dog “George”
Submitted by: Ranald & Mindy Totten George’s View: I was languishing in a Pender County shelter, all pent up energy and eagerness, when I saw an official looking woman with an experienced eye for saving pups like me. I knew immediately to be on my cutest behavior, which is not difficult for me because I am blessed with a face that melts hearts. She picked me to be one of two students in the Pawsitive Partners Prison Program at New Hanover County Correctional Facility. But first something awful happened: I tested positive for heartworms! I thought I was a goner, but that nice woman arranged for treatment. The shots were okay, but I wasn’t allowed to run around because dogs can die if they exercise too much after heartworm treatment. That was a serious bummer because I’m a hunter, and after food, running and sniffing are my favorite things. I’m a survivor, though. I made it through, and off to prison I went. Even though I was in a crate a lot, the program was great because my trainer worked with me for hours at a time. He taught me to sit, stay, come, and even to roll over in both directions, to fetch my leash, and to only eat a treat off my paw when he said so. Shortly after beginning the prison program, I went to an adoption fair, and became the fastest adopted dog in the program – ever! I was deliv-ered to my new family on Halloween Day, 2013, and I’ve been in heaven ever since. Dad’s View: About six months before George arrived, we had lost our best friend, a Rhodesian Ridgeback called Kizzy. Though George is a Redbone Coonhound, he reminded us a lot of her. When we calculated the timing of Kizzy’s passing and George’s ordeal, we started referring to Kizzy as ‘She Who Sent You’.
I love to play tennis but couldn’t immediately after Kizzy died because of a shoulder injury. Miraculously, the pain subsided enough to play again right after George arrived (never to underestimate the power of mind, body, and spirit, and an awesome dog). Mom’s View: We call him George, but his full name is Chicken George Sherlock Dixon Boo Totten. When we went to the adoption fair, our eyes met, and I immediately knew -- George had found us. Second chances come along so infrequently, and George’s second chance had tremendous impact on so many: his prison trainer with whom we still stay in touch; us, his adoring parents whose lives have been so enriched by his sweet face, silky fur, and gentle and playful manner; and most important, George himself, who now has a loving home after a rough early life. Why should George be on the cover of PawPrints? Not only is he smart, athletic, and a total clown, all in one, he is also a wise old soul, which you can see from his photo here. Anyone who looks into those eyes will know that everything is going to be just fine.
1st Runner-Up
“Princess Daisy” Submitted by: Daniel Tilgner
I am writing to submit my sweet bearded girl Princess Daisy. When my wife and I started dating she already had a dog named Yoshi who was just amazing. We often talked about getting a second dog, but decided that we would wait until we bought a house and had more room than our small one-bedroom apartment. Well, a few years later we got engaged and moved
into a new home but we didn’t decide to get another dog right away. After a few months, my wife came home from work one day and told me that they had gotten a rescue dog in at work (she works in a vet hospital) and that she “is just so cute and sweet!” She just kept repeating that phrase over and over through the course of our conversation, regardless of what I asked her. “Do you want to adopt this dog?” I would ask. “She’s just so cute and sweet!” was her reply, which is really no answer at all. Eventu-ally I just said that I would stop by work the next day and meet this cute and sweet dog that she wouldn’t stop talking about. So I went in and she brought out Daisy for me to meet and, just like she said, she was just so incredibly cute and sweet. She was very timid about meeting me though. You see, Daisy was about a year old and had spent the first year of her life locked up outside in a small pen with many other dogs and fed basically nothing but table scraps. We decided right then we would adopt her and brought her home that very same day to meet her new brother. They got along great, although they didn’t play much together because Daisy didn’t know how to be a dog. She was frightened by everything (not least of all the small squeaky toys Yoshi was playing with). Luckily though, Yoshi was able to teach her everything he knew about playing and using the bathroom outside. She took after him so much that she now lifts her leg to pee like a boy dog because she saw him do it. Daisy was the flower girl at our wedding a few months after we got her and we’ve been an extremely happy family ever since. When we lost Yoshi last June, Daisy was sad and lethargic and lost her appetite for a while. Eventually we decided to look for another dog for our family and after several weeks of looking for the right one we found a new brother for her. Tyrannosaurus joined our fam-ily, her new little brother. They instantly took to one another, and just like Yoshi did with Daisy, Daisy taught Ty (for short) everything she knew. They play and wrestle all the time, and love each other. Daisy has brought so much joy to our lives and we couldn’t be happier.

2nd Runner-Up “Ellie”
Submitted by: Jenny Moore
This is Ellie, a Corgi/Shepherd mix who was found abandoned on an isolated, dirt road. A good friend picked her up on a hot August after-noon in 2011. Ellie was very pregnant (belly dragging the ground) and 3 days after she was found she had 9 puppies in an empty stall at the barn. Over the course of the next 8-weeks my friends found homes for all the puppies and Ellie then came to live with me. When we took Ellie to be spayed the vet esti-mated her age at 5-years and said this had been at least her second but possibly her third litter. Despite having such a rocky start in life; Ellie is one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet. She gets along with dogs, cats, horses, cockatiels and even a raccoon that was being rehabbed on the farm. She does well with all types of people, too. She is one of those dogs who could fit into just about any type of family. She is a laid-back girl who loves to ride in the car and snuggle on the couch. I am entering Ellie in the cover model contest because I believe she is an excellent example of how wonderful rescue dogs can be. I think peo-ple sometimes view rescue animals as damaged or in some way lacking. They may be afraid to adopt an adult dog because of the perceived baggage that comes along with them. Everyone who meets Ellie sees that this is far from the truth. She came from a tough background and fit into my life effortlessly. There is NOTHING wrong with this little dog. She has been a dream to train and has no vices. Wherever I take her people always comment on her cute looks and joyful personality. The irresponsible person who abandoned her thought of Ellie as a disposable problem but to me she is a once in a lifetime dog. A lot of people have said they would like to find a dog like her. I always tell them to check out their local shelters/rescues and publications like PawPrints because there are so many more won-derful, one of a kind pets out there in need of a good home.
3rd Runner-Up
“Grady” Submitted by: Lin Edelen
Ahoy Mate! This is Grady, rescued (without a day to spare) through Friends of Lincoln County Rescue when his owner's home was foreclosed and he wasn't welcome in her temporary housing. Rehoming him proved impossible because Grady had been isolated in a crate for much of his 5-years and totally lacked socialization. No one wants to adopt a potentially aggressive dog, and Grady snarled at everybody and everything. Having just retired and recovering from can-cer, I wasn't really looking for a dog...but I heard his story, thought Grady deserved a chance, and drove the 200 miles to Charlotte to get him. With a trainer and over many months, we learned communication and trust; and through lots of walks and outings, I introduced him to the world outside his crate. Once lunging in fear of pine cones and falling leaves, gradually Grady learned how to be a dog. He now eagerly sniffs the ground during walks, happily trots alongside as I ride my bike, and enjoys the breeze out the opened car window. Wherever we are, Grady attracts attention and I inevitably hear "that dog oughta be in pictures." I'm frequently asked about his "pedigree" and though Grady easily passes as Portuguese Water Dog, he's likely English Water Spaniel and American Cocker Spaniel mix. He's very protec-tive while with me, but when his leash is handed to a stranger, Grady responds to commands like he's their dog. He has high energy and performs lots of tricks (for treats, of course), recognizing both voice and hand signals. With impeccable house manners, Grady can't hide his excitement for the rustle of a potato chip bag, playing fetch, or discovering just what makes a "squeaky toy" squeak! Whether he cocks his head to the side to listen, invites you to play with a well-chewed tennis ball, jumps into a lap for hugs and reassur-ance, or runs fast circles to go out, Grady is a lovable dude with a boatload of personality!
Facebook Favorite #1 “Walter”
Submitted by: David & Sharon Luther
I rescued WALTER from Friends Fur Life K 9 Rescue in late October. Our previous rescue dog passed away in March and obviously it was devastating. We have a tour boat and pirate ship in Surf City and Tiger (my previous dog) entertained the passengers by jump-ing through hoops and doing tricks. Not bad for a puppy mill dog rescued at 6-years-old! Anyway, I have had Jack Russell's and my husband used to have Basset Hounds and one day while searching we found the perfect compromise, WALTER! We were told he is a mix of the two breeds. He is 2-years-old and is ex-tremely affectionate and hopefully can take up where Tiger left off. He is currently in training, but it is a little complicated as we have three parrots (rescues) and while I say "Sit" the one bird tells him to "Roll over”. Although the bird does say, "WALTER, sit...good boy". As I said with Tiger I will repeat again. We did not rescue him, he rescued us!
Facebook Favorite #2 “Bentley”
Submitted by: Melissa Baldi
This is Bentley He is almost 9-months-old and my husband and I rescued him from the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office Animal Services unit in Wil-mington, NC when he was just 7-weeks-old in August of 2014! Him and his siblings were neglected for the first few weeks of their lives and then left on the side of a highway in a cardboard box. I've always had a dog so my husband promised that after we got married and I moved to his duty station, we would get a puppy so I wouldn't feel such a void from leaving behind my entire life. Rescuing has always been very important to me, so I refused to look anywhere but the shelters. It was love at first sight! Mr. Personality here has made every day such a joy. His love for everyone, whether 2 legged or 4 legged, is so heartwarming. I believe he would be the perfect cover model because he LOVES the camera, and does his infamous head tilt whenever he see's one! He's become the star of our neighborhood and he just bright-ens everyone's day, including mine!! I hope that he can help brighten up some more lives and put smiles on more of the worlds faces!!!!!

Hey! Would you like to live with me? My name is Daisy and I'm only 8-months-old. I'm a lovely
black and white kitty who reminds every-one of "Daisy" the

adopted, but I didn't like being in a cage-

mom and dad around and sit in their laps. The other cat members of the family are jealous, and that's why I need a new home. I

8-month-old female Boxer mix, on the small side and with beautiful markings including my white “boots”, who just
graduated from the Pawsitive Partners Prison
Program. Of course, I am up to date on shots, neutered, and house-trained. Bet-ter still, I know all my basic commands, walk well on a leash,
and have good doggy manners. Not many puppies can make that claim! Here is a photo of me wearing my mortar-

►Hello, everyone! I’m Lyla, a 3-year-old female Boxer mix. I am very
athletic and don’t mind going to a
home with humans who like to be ac-tive. A home with another friendly
dog like me would be right up my al-ley, too! I am also very smart – I can sit, shake and give kisses. All these
qualities and sweet to boot, yet over
two years here and nobody seems to want me. I don’t get it. I’m truly a gem waiting to be found!
►My name is Addison but my friends call me
Addi! They say I am a sweetheart! I love to play ball but I also love to snuggle. I'm a

am FUN! 2) I enjoy your company. 3) I am EAGER to learn anything you are willing to teach me!

adopter. If you just give me some TLC and time to ad-just, I am the kind of dog who will blossom. For more

My name is Stache and I’m a 7-month-old boy. You might rec-ognize me from my
Cover Model appear-ance on the March
issue! I’m still waiting for a loving family, which is quite per-plexing considering my loveable and af-fectionate nature. I just LOVE to cuddle and be held and will start purring as soon as I see you. I am on medication for a heart condition, but I’m doing so well that I may one day come off of it! Come by and see me during business hours or

PUPPY KISSES AVAILABLE HERE! The volunteers say my name should be Honey because I’m so sweet, but since I’m a boy I suppose Max (A077603) will do! I’m a friendly and playful Terrier
mix puppy, just 4-months-old. I am a pretty simple guy who enjoys a car ride with the win-dows rolled down, toys to play with,
and active compan-ions who can teach me new tricks so that I can impress all of my friends. Come on over to the shelter and give me a
cuddle. We might be destined to be best friends for life! My adoption fee includes a physical examination, heartworm test, a rabies vaccination and neuter surgery. For driving

RescueConnect’s Annual Yard Sale It’s that time of year again! Beginning at 8am on Sat-urday, April 18, RescueConnect will be holding its next charity yard sale at 6042 Wrightsville Avenue in Wilming-ton! RescueConnect is very excited to announce it is now a registered 501c3 Federally recognized non-profit organi-zation! If you are interested in donating items before April 17, the group will be providing receipts for tax deductible donations. Volunteers will be available for local pick-ups for larger items you would like to donate. Items that sell very well are gently used clothing, kid’s items, home and holiday items, furniture, and outdoor/garden. No donation is too small! RescueConnect has been grow-ing over the last year and is thrilled to be a resource in the community for animals in need. Its success is only possible by its ability to step up and fill the gap for animals in need. This often-times means financial assistance for dogs and cats who would oth-erwise be too expensive for a res-cue to commit to help. Rescue-Connect is assisting several ani-mals right now, but Simon, a Corgi/Shepherd mix on page 39, needs some financial assistance currently beyond the group’s funds. Money earned at this sale will help provide much needed assistance. If you prefer to make a donation directly to Simon’s care, they can be made via PayPal to [email protected] or by mail to RescueConnect, 6042 Wrightsville Avenue, Wilmington, NC 28403.
Paw’s Place’s 2nd Annual Golf Outing Save the Date! April 25, 2015. Join Paw’s Place in its effort to raise funds to support its organization. Paw’s Place’s 2nd Annual Golf Out-ing will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at the Oak Island Golf Club with a 9am Shot-Gun Start. Please contact Rick Mazur at 910-253-7662 or via e-mail at [email protected] to play, be a sponsor or to donate a product or service.
Adopt-An-ANGEL Seeks Volunteers Do you have some spare time? Would you like to help Adopt-An-ANGEL find homes for homeless animals? They are looking for some energetic, responsible, committed, passionate people to help out at
adoption fairs. They hold adoption fairs every Saturday and Sunday at Petco on South College Road in Wilming-ton from 10am to 6pm. Volunteer shifts generally run from 10am to 2pm or 2pm to 6pm one day on the week-end. You can sign up weekly so come when you can. It does require some manual labor such as lifting cages, cleaning cages and walking strong dogs. There are also a few weekly shifts open for cage cleaning at various pet stores throughout the week and some transport options, too. It can be very meaningful and rewarding to help a homeless animal find its forever home. For more informa-tion, please call Art at 203-994-3765. You may only be one person, but you can be one person who makes a differ-ence. Life is too short, do stuff that matters!

Are you ready for two teenage boys who will bring lots of fun and love into your life?! That’s me, Kyle, in the chair
and facing you. My brother, Pip, is showing you his hand-some profile. We look a lot alike, don’t you think? We're
1½-years-old with white and gray Tabby fur. I love playing and getting attention. Feel free to pick me up and cradle me! My brother Pip is a little more shy than me, but he's the biggest snuggler. We're both very loving kitties who would appreciate our forever home where we can relax,
play, and receive lots and lots of love. Come see us soon at Petsmart in Wilmington and get to know us! We’re
there seven days a week. You can also call Cat Adoption Team at 910-792-9014 for more information.

My name is Pandora and I am the most well-behaved and loving little lady! I have soulful eyes that I use to get belly rubs and treats!
I am around 9-years-young, in perfect health, heartworm nega-tive, spayed and fully vaccinated. I never leave the house without my pink blingy collar and leash - after all, doggie fashion is every-thing! I do love to snuggle and
give kisses and will let you know when I am in need of attention! I am crate-trained and house-trained. If you would like to know more about me or how we can become best friends, please call Carolinas Russell Rescue at 910-821-3504 and leave a mes-
sage or you can send an email to [email protected].
I’m Maggie, and this is my brother Max, and we need
a loving home. We are 8-years-old, healthy, house-
trained and very well be-haved. Perfect little Minis!
We are also spayed/neutered, heartworm nega-tive and up to date on vac-cines. We used to be well cared for by our family but, due to hard times, we are up for adoption. I weigh 8 pounds while Max weighs 11 pounds. We are bonded and must be placed together. It would be pitiful to separate us. Life can be hard anyway, please help us stay together! To fill out an application, visit www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org.
Call 919-723-7145 if you need one mailed or faxed. Mention this ad in PawPrints and get $50 off our adoption donation!
I am Einstein, an 11-year-old male Jack Russell mix living in a
foster home with canine siblings. I’m a loving little man who is house-trained. When my mother lost her home (she had cared for me since I was a puppy), Russell Rescue took me in. I am diabetic but my
foster mom worked very hard to get my insulin reduced by 50%! I would love nothing more than to find my forever home where I can run in the yard and sun in the grass.
Call 910-821-3504 and leave a message or email [email protected] for more info.
CAROLINA BASSET HOUND RESCUE
My name is Annabelle and I’m an extraordinary lady hound. I love naps and any and everybody.
I'm very sweet and cannot wait to meet you. My foster mom has got-ten me all spruced up so
now I can begin the search for my forever
home. Call CBHR and find out more about me today. Could you be the one I’ve been looking for? To make me a mem-
ber of your family, please call 919-708-4247 or visit our web-site at www.cbhr.com. Also, we are always short on foster homes! If you have ever thought about fostering, please
contact CBHR for more details.
BOSTON TERRIER RESCUE TEAM CAROLINAS
Hi, my name is Tux and I’m a 5-year-old Boston Terrier who is
blind. I have a heart of gold and a personality to match. I am neu-tered, I’m up to date on all my vaccinations, I’ve already been
microchipped and I tested heart-worm negative. I love to play with
other dogs and snuggle on the couch. I need a family who un-
derstands I will bump into stuff at first while I map out my location
but once I have it down - no wor-ries! If you would like to adopt
one of the sweetest guys around, please send an email to [email protected] or call
828-778-2045. You can also visit us online at www.bostonrescueteam.com
My name is Bandit and I am a thief of hearts and sofas. I am a devilishly
handsome and wise fellow who is looking for a for-
ever home to call my own. I am about 9-years-old so I am past all that trouble-some puppy behavior. I love to hang out with my
foster mom on the front porch and soak up the sun and watch the world go by. I love going for long walks and hav-ing deep conversations. I am really friendly with other dogs and people and I am a great listener. If you are looking for a Super Senior guy to hang out with then look me up. To adopt
me, please call 919-708-4247 or visit www.cbhr.com.

Hello there, my name is Glitter

would love to be

My name is Max and I am an 8-year-old Boxer mix. I am just so loving
and I get along with other dogs. I was found in horrible shape. I still
look a little rough around the edges but my time to shine is just around the corner. I need to gain a
little more weight but none of that really mat-
ters though because it’s what’s inside that
counts. I am very mel-low so if you are looking for a calm, cool and col-lected boy then I'm your man. If you give me a chance, I will melt your heart. I am fully vetted and weigh just under 60 pounds. Please call R.A.C.E. at 910-579-0407 to adopt me or
visit us online at www.raceshelter.org.
I am sponsored by Levi Donovan. Everybody wins with adoption!
