Cisco AnyConnect VPN Home User Instructions

Introduction

This  guide  is  for  connecting  to  the  St  George’s  VPN  system  using  a  personal  pc  e.g.  Home  PC  or  Laptop. Access to services will be provided via a Virtual Desktop using VMware View Client.

The links provided should not be used for any other type of device e.g. trust PC\laptop or smart device such Apple IOS or Android

The Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility VPN Client is supported by IT on the following platforms:

Windows Versions

x Microsoft Windows XP (32-bit) x Microsoft Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit) x Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)

Though not supported by IT, there are VPN clients available for 32-bit and 64-bit Linux and for Apple Mac OS X

Apple Mac OS X versions

x Apple Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" , Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard", Mac  OS  X  “10.7  “Lion” and Mac  OS  X  10.8  “Mountain  Lion”

Linux Versions

It has been tested to work on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Note that VMware View client for Linux (required) currently only supports Ubuntu. It is possible it might work on other Debian based Linux distributions.

Prerequisites

x Make sure your mobile phone number registered with IT to use the service. Without this the SMS security password cannot be sent

x VMware View client is required to be installed before installing the AnyConnect VPN client. Access to all trust resources is provided via the VMware View clients Virtual Desktop

Follow link below and select and install the appropriate VMware View client for your OS:

VMware View Client installation

Microsoft Windows

Click  ‘Run’  to  and follow default prompts to complete installation

Apple Mac OS X

Double-click on the downloaded .dmg and open the mounted image

Linux

Follow instructions to install from Ubuntu Software Centre

Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility VPN Client Installation

To begin installation on all Operating Systems use the following URL:

https://webvpn.stgeorges.nhs.uk/remote

1. Enter your Trust Username and Password 2. The next prompt will ask for a One-Time Password. Enter the 6-digit password received on

your  mobile  phone  and  click  ‘Continue’

Please note that after the client installation the URL is no longer required to login

Follow the section below for your Operating System:

Microsoft Windows

1. The  next  screen  will  show  ‘Security  Options’  information bar at the top of the browser. Right-Click  and  select  ‘Install  This  Add-on  for  All  Users  on  This  Computer’.

2. After this  click  ‘Run  Add-on’  then  select  ‘Run’  at  the  next  Security  Warning. 3. AnyConnect should display Connected on the dialogue box and the AnyConnect icon should

be visible in the System Tray as shown below:

Note - If prompted to add the URL https://webvpn.stgeorges.nhs.uk/remote to be added to Trusted

Sites follow steps below:

1. Click OK to clear warning. On Internet Explorer menu select Tools, Internet Options then Security tab. In Select a zone to view or change security settings select Trusted Sites

2. Select Sites then click Add, Close then OK 3. Restart installation again by entering https://webvpn.stgeorges.nhs.uk/remote

Apple Mac OSX

1. Client will not install automatically. Use the link provided to download client (Mac OS X 10.5+ (intel) and manually install vpnsetup.dmg

Linux

1. The Cisco AnyConnect VPN client will try to install. Follow the link (Link i386) to download vpnsetup.sh script. Once done click Logout to disconnect.

2. Run the script from a terminal with root privilege (i.e. using sudo) and follow the prompts to continue installation.

Launching the AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client

After installing the AnyConnect Client for the first time the VPN connection might already be connected depending on OS. Continue to section Connecting to VMware View Virtual Desktop

If not continue steps below for your OS:

Microsoft Windows

1. The client can be launched by going to the Start menu ->All Programs ->Cisco ->Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client -> Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client or click the AnyConnect icon in the System Tray and select VPN Connect:

Apple Mac OS X

1. In the Applications Folder open the Cisco folder then Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client program or use Dock Area:

Linux

1. Click the Dash Home icon then select the Applications. The Cisco AnyConnect Mobility Client can be found in the Installed folder or Side Menu

Connecting  to  St  George’s  VPN

All Operating Systems

If the Connect to: field is empty type in the following address: webvpn.stgeorges.nhs.uk/remote

Once  the  client  is  launched  click  on  ‘Select’  button  to start login process and enter the same login details used previously.

The client will then will minimize to the System Tray (Windows), Status Bar (Max OS X) or Notification Area (Linux) and  display  a  “Lock”  on  the icon to show as connected. To show the client click on the icon in the appropriate area for your Operating System

Connecting to VMware View Virtual Desktop

All operating systems

1. Once connected to the AnyConnect VPN start VMware View client and in Connection Server field type view.net.stgeorges.nhs.uk then click Connect button

2. Enter you trust username and password and make sure STGEORGES domain is selected then click Login

3. Click Connect on the next screen to start Virtual Desktop 4. When finished logoff of Virtual Desktop from Start menu

Terminating AnyConnect VPN Session

On ending the VMware View session click the Disconnect button shown by left clicking the AnyConnect the icon shown in the System Tray or notification area depending on operating system.

Notes:

o The screenshots were taken using Windows XP. The interface on other operating systems may differ slightly

o When connected to the VPN web browsing using the operating systems native browser is not enabled. All access to trust resources and web browsing is done via the VMware View Virtual Desktop Client
