IT'S BIRDING SEASON UP IN MACAW: JOIN US!

As the year starts, we expect more sun and wind rather than rain and humidity in Costa Rica's dry season. The blooming verbenas that surround the Eastern side of the Lodge project their purple 'foxtails' attracting all sorts of hummingbirds: Scaly-breasted, Charming, Rufous-tailed, Violet-headed, Blue-vented and Ruby-throated have been spotted around our grounds during this season. Walking towards the entrance, fruit attracts the beautiful, small and playful tanagers: Summer, Blue-gray and Golden-hooded are just a few types that come by. Cecropias are also a favorite food that will bring other species. Last but not least, our almond trees are ready for our iconic bird: the Scarlet Macaw. To the newcomer, sighting this bird for the first time is a very magical moment. The red wings contrast with the bright yellow and deep blue lines making their flight a magnificent sight. We have set up 5 artificial nests amongst their favorite food: the fruit from the almond trees. You can spot groups of them happily feeding, flying or just resting in couples. We fully pride ourselves in our name Santuario de Macao, which is inspired in this beautiful bird and the story of a species that almost was extinct and is now thriving.

The rain and wet forest surrounding us hosts up to 350 species of migratory and resident birds. Come join us this January on our birdwatching tour! We depart at

6:00 AM, prime time for birding, from the front desk. You can bird for 2 hours, all morning or all day with our expert guide Hugo who will guide you through our trails and paths identifying and showing you the birds that visit us this time of the year.

ES TEMPORADA DE PAJAROS: ¡ACOMPAÑANOS!

Al comenzar el año, esperamos mas sol y viento que lluvias y humedad a medida que entra la época seca en el país. Las verbenas florecen y rodeando el lado Este del hotel proyectan sus colas violeta morado 'de gato' para atraer todo tipo de colibríes: el de Cuvier, amazilia corona de berilo, amazilia de cola rufa, el cabeza violeta, el coliazul o rabiazul y el de garganta rubí son algunos de los que se pasean en esta época cerca de estas plantas o en nuestro bosque. Moviéndose rápida y silenciosamente, añaden color y magia a nuestros jardines. Caminando hacia la entrada, la fruta llama a las pequeñas y llamativas tangaras: la cenicienta, la roja migratoria y el capuchidorada. Las cecropias también son la comida favorita de otra gran variedad de especies. Por último, los almendros atraen a nuestro pájaro más icónico: la lapa roja, o Ara Macao.

Para el que observa este pájaro por primera vez en su vida, es un momento mágico. Las alas rojas contrastan con el amarillo brillante y el profundo azul de las líneas de plumas que la pintan; haciendo el vuelo una vista maravillosa. Hemos colocado 5 nidos artificiales y además reforestado con almendros a través de las décadas. Cuando estos árboles dan fruto, atraen a las lapas. Puedes verlas en grupos alimentándose felizmente, volando en grupos o sólo descansando en parejas. Estamos muy orgullosos de ser el Santuario de Macao, que se inspira en esta hermosa ave y la inspiradora historia de cómo casi se extingue a estar exitosamente presente en su habitat.

El bosque lluvioso y el bosque húmedo de nuestros alrededores son el hogar de 350 especies tanto migratorias como residentes. Acompañanos este Enero en nuestros tours de avistamiento de aves. Salimos de la entrada a 6:00 de la mañana, la hora perfecta para pajarear. Tenemos opciones de dos horas, la mañana entera o el día entero, todas con nuestro guía experto Hugo. Con su conocimiento, adentrarse en los caminos y senderos de nuestros bosques se vuelve una aventura, una búsqueda y un placer en lo que se avistan tantas diferentes aves.

NIGHTWALK: AMPHIBIANS AND OTHER CREATURES

If you have ever a sunset in Macaw, you have felt the magic. The sky's orange pink and yellow highlights are visible in the space that is surrounded by the rainforest. Quickly, the Night takes over and you can hear the cicadas' screaming, merging their calls into a buzzing chorus, with some lower and slower sounds that are not insects, but rather frogs. Rarely a toad. Our main lake has streams and rivers that flow into smaller and smaller areas that are home to 25 species of amphibians. In our nightwalk tour, we visit their habitat and we see all types of frogs and toads. We depart at 6:00 P.M. and walk around the botanical garden for one and a half hours. The most colorful frogs you will see are the yellow glass frog, the yello tree frog or Osteopilus pulchrilineatus, the leopard frog, the classic and iconic red eyed green frog, and some cane toads here and there.

In only 300 meters of distance, you can observe more than 10 frog species. Sometimes, you can see snakes! We recommend you use long pants and boots.

We provide flashlights and bug repellent. If you are excited and passionate about nature. this is an exciting tour you can not miss!

CAMINATA NOCTURNA: ANFIBIOS Y OTRAS CRIATURAS

El atardecer en Macaw es algo mágico. Los destellos del cielo y el cambio de colores amarillos rosas y naranjas son visibles entre el espacio que es rodeado, abrazado por el denso bosque lluvioso. Rápidamente oscurece y si no gritan a alaridos las chicharras, queriendo harmonizar su canto, se oyen ranas. Ranas y sapos. Nuestro lago principal no es único, sino que le siguen otras pozas, riachuelos y piscinas que son hogar a 25 especies de anfibios. En nuestro tour nocturno visitamos su hábitat y vemos todo tipo de ranas y sapos en estas lagunas. Salimos a las 6:00 PM y en una hora y media recorremos el jardín botánico y alrededores. Las ranas más coloridas que observarás son la rana de cristal amarilla, la rana de árbol amarilla o Osteopilus pulchrilineatus, la

leopardo, la famosa e icónica rana verde de ojos rojos, y algunos sapos de caña aquí y allá. En tan sólo 300 metros, se pueden observar más de 10 especies de ranas. A veces podemos ver serpientes. Recomendamos usar pantalones largos y botas, prestamos focos y también repelente. Si te emociona y apasiona la naturaleza, este es un tour muy emocionante que no debes perderte.

SUSTAINABLE LIVING TOUR

Another activity we wish to promote and talk about is our sustainable living tour. During this walk, we are not only observing animals. We take it deeper to understanding and learning about our interaction with the environment. It's fascinating because we share with you our story and talk about a broad range of topics: geography, ecosystems, biodiversity, society, social impact. From the day the land was purchased, Pablo and Andrei had 'sustainability' in mind, considering this word and concept has evolved since the 80's. Nowadays, Macaw is almost 100% self sufficient in terms of energy, water, food and materials used for construction of the structures. We walk and talk through the cacao plantations that represent the agroforestry systems, the botanical garden with exotic and native species, the secondary forest, the coffee and vainilla

plantations, and finally the vegetable and other plant for the kitchen. We also show you how we make our compost from organic waste, coal and earthworm. At the end, we relax and discuss what you have learned at our Green Corner. Sustainability is such a big and powerful topic and we hope to share our story and teachings with you in this 90 minute walk in our beautiful surroundings.

TOUR DE SOSTENIBILIDAD

Otra actividad que promovemos y hablamos bastante sobre es el tour de sostenibilidad. En esta caminata, no sólo observaremos animales. Es más profundo y tratamos de traer conocimiento y aprendizaje al participante. El

enfoque es la interacción del humano (nosotros) con el ambiente (el terreno, sus planta y todo lo que habita y ha habitado en los últimos años). Es fascinante y a la vez estimulante ya que compartimos nuestra historia, tocando temas grandes como la geografía, los ecosistemas, la biodiversidad, la sociedad y el impacto social. Desde el día que se compró el terreno, la palabra y el concepto de 'sostenibilidad' lo tenían en mente Pablo y Andrei Gordienko. Consideremos que ha evolucionado desde los ochentas.

Macaw es casi que 100% auto suficiente en términos de energía, agua, comida y materiales utilizados para la construcción de estructuras. Caminamos y hablamos de las plantaciones de cacao (nuestro famoso sistema agroforestal), el jardín botánico con especies exóticas y nativas, el bosque secundario, las plantaciones de café y vainilla, y finalmente el espacio de plantación y cultivo de los vegetales y otras plantas que van para los platos que prepararn con mucho amor en la cocina.

También enseñamos cómo se hace nuestro compost con materia orgánico, carbón y gusanos. Al final, nos relajamos y discutimos todo lo aprendido en nuestra Esquina Verde. La sostenibilidad es un tema tan grande y tan poderoso y esperamos inspirar por medio de nuestra historia y estos conocimientos que les daremos en los 90 minutos que caminamos alrededor de nuestro entorno.
