HISTORYHISTORYsponsors.

Barclay works tirelessly throughout the year to organise sponsors, families to billet players and run the event.

1983 - the event was renamed the Leanne Pietzner Memorial after the tragic loss of one of Mackay's most promising players in a car accident.

1985 - the AIS chose to support the event to give their squad of talented juniors an opportunity to get more match play as part of their preparations for other events on the professional circuit.

In that year Philip Larmer won the mens championship whilst 1981 World Champion Rhonda Thorne won the women's title.

1987 - the women's final was played between Sarah Fitz-Gerald and Michelle Martin.Fitz-Gerald won that encounter but as history would testify it was only the humble beginnings for these two absolute legends of the game.

In 1993 Martin won the first of 3

consecutive world titles and then Fitz-Gerald followed with 3 of her own before winning 5 in total. In 2012 Martin won the World Masters Championship Over 45 event and in 2014 Fitz-Gerald won the same event.

1993 - saw John White from Townsville at the time win the event. He went on to become World No 1 and represented Scotland. White was known as the hardest hitter of the ball in the sport of squash.

1999 - Tully’s Lisa Camilleri won the first of her 5 titles. Also in that year Mackay’s Brad Hindle was the men's winner. He now represents Malta.

When home, Hindle visits family and still takes the time to visit his old club to help coach our up and coming juniors.

2003 - Rockhampton's Craig Rowland won the the first of his two titles. In 2012 and 2014 Rowland won the Over 40 World Masters Championships.

2004 - the event became known as the Mackay Open once again.

1978 - The Mackay Open was established by the then owners Henry and Sharon Trindorfer.

They were encouraged by Ian Carlisle who was new to Mackay and a top player from Wales. Carlisle quickly established there was need for a tournament given the pool of talented players in North Queensland.

1979 - Kay Barclay won the women’s title. She continues to this day to be the driving force behind the success of the Mackay Open.

She has transformed the Mackay Open into a PSA and WSA endorsed event offering valuable world ranking points to young professional players.

The event now attracts rising professional players from all over the world. This creates not only a wonderful spectacle for squash enthusiasts but helps to improve the standard of local players.

The event would not be possible without the incredible support from a large number of local

England’s Eddie Charlton has maintained his good form from the Queensland Open to clinch the 2012 Mackay Open.

In the process he denied Mike Corren a hat trick of Mackay Open title wins.

Ironically, it was Charlton who put the evergreen South Australian out of the Queensland Open when he won their semi final clash in 5 after being down 0-2.

This time Charlton was

Norway’s number 1 woman squash player Lotte Eriksen has broken through to win her first WSA tour title.

The 25 year old defeated training partner Victoria Bell from England in the final of the Mackay Open.

The tropical conditions of North Queensland didn’t seem to phase these two northern hemisphere raiders as they battled for 45 minutes.

A slight edge in experience at vital times helped Eriksen, ranked 75 in the World overcome Bell who is currently ranked 86.

Currently ranked 82 in the World, Charlton won his 3rd title on the PSA World Tour.

Jan won the 67 minute battle in five after being down 1-2. The World # 74 with a career high of 39 was too strong in the end for the World # 118.

Koukal’s win was full of merit considering he was pushed to five in the semi final against Switzerland’s Lukas Burkhart.

It was the 30 year old’s 27th title on the professional circuit.

Jan has now won the Queensland Open, Caboolture Open and the Mackay Open.

It wasn’t like their previous match up where Lisa dominated and won the Q Open 3-0. This time she had a real battle on her hands.

Milou won the first two games 12-10 and 13-11 before Lisa began a sustained fightback winning the next 3 games 11-8, 11-8, 11-6.

The 30 year old has spent the last 10 months rebuilding after incurring a potentially career ending injury in 2011 to win the 21st professional title of her career and her 3rd title in 3 weeks!

Everything has just fallen back into place for Lisa winning the Queensland Open, Caboolture Open and the Mackay Open.

20142014In the all Argentinean final #3 seed emerged victorious after 73 grueling minutes to become the 2014 Mackay Open champion. “I'm very happy to have won” said a beaming Pezzota.

nd31 year old Pezzota has now won his 2 PSA Tour title with a tough 3-0 victory against #2 seed Gonzalo Miranda 11-2, 13-11, 13-11. It was certainly a case of hot courts and two strong retrievers!

stIn early August, Pezzota won his 1 PSA Tour event taking out the Tauron Ponta Lagoa International Challenger 10 event in Brazil. On that occasion he battled it out for 92 minutes so he is no stranger to a tough fight.

Having just broken into the World Top 100 at #99, Pezzota got off to a brilliant start taking the first game before some Argentinean pride bubbled to the surface. Miranda wasn't going to go away that lightly and the two began grinding it out and keeping the referees on their toes!

It was Pezzota's second final in as many weeks but this time happiness replaced disappointment!

2015 Preview2015 PreviewQueenslander is the highest ranked to enter the PSA M5 event.

The former WN 36 will be a short-priced favourite to lift the Mackay Open trophy for the first time.

Alexander underwent hip surgery in August 2013 and is slowly but surely rebuilding his world ranking.

Recently, the 26 year old WN 84 won his first title for 2015 defeating Douglas Kempsell from Scotland in the final of the NSW Open 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 in 50 minutes.

The #2 seed is ACT’s Josh Larkin who is currently enjoying the best year of his career on the tour.

The 25 year old has now reached four finals in 2015 winning two.

In late May, Larkin was simply sensational winning his first two tour titles: the Western Australian Open and Kalgoorlie Golden Open.

Recently, the WN 118 was runner up in the

Bendigo International and the North Coast Open.

The North Coast Open saw Larkin battle it out with Douglas Kempsell for 80 minutes before losing narrowly 11-5, 8-11, 6-11, 11-13.

The top 2 seeds look set to make the final but the #3 seed Adam Murrills from England will be doing his level best to prevent an all Aussie final.

Keep an eye on the #4 seed to cause some havoc. NT’s Rhys Dowling upset Josh Larkin in the NSW Open 10-12, 11-6, 11-8, 5-11, 11-4 (60m) to reach his first tour semi for 2015.

Dowling lost the semi to eventual winner Zac Alexander 7-11, 6-11, 7-11 (32m) but it was another positive step forward for the 20 year old..The WN 163 looks set to break into the World Top 150 in the not too distant future.

Aussie Sarah Cardwell female to enter the PSA W5 event.

The talented Victorian was runner up in the 2014 Mackay Open.

Cardwell is striving to win her second tour title and break into the World Top 50.

Her highest World ranking was #51 achieved in December 2012.

Cardwell is an ultra consistent performer and reaching the 2015 final is well within her grasp despite her immediate threats being ranked between #64 and #71.

Standing in her way is a host of players including #2 seed Vanessa Chu from Hong Kong, #3 seed Cheyna Tucker from South Africa and former Mackay Open champ Lisa Camilleri (seeded #4).

20 year old Chu (WN 64) has already won two tour titles this year. Her 3-2 win against Christine Nunn in the quarter finals of the Bendigo International was full of merit and suggests Chu is in form and will be a serious threat in this year’s Open.

South African Tucker (WN 66) will be hoping to recapture the form that helped her reach the final of the Tasmanian Open in July.

Back then Tucker beat Cardwell in four 7-11, 11-8,

Interestingly the top 7 players in this year’s open have Top 100 World rankings. It will be highly competitive with all 7 players ranked from 61 to 86.

One player who is more than capable of upsetting the top 3 players is Lisa Camilleri.

The former WN 28 has the skill and experience to bounce back and win her first tournament for 2015.

Camilleri knows exactly what it takes to win a title in Mackay having won the Mackay Open on 5 previous occasions.

Keep a look out for rising star Lakeesha Rarere. Australia’s best junior is beginning to make her mark on the senior tour and pushed Cardwell all the way in the South Australian Open in May.

Cardwell eventually won that battle 11-3, 9-11, 12-14, 11-5, 11-7 (51m) but Rarere has improved since then.

Recently, Rarere pushed Milou van der Heijden (2013 Mackay Open Runner Up) all the way in their quarter final match up at the NSW Open 6-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9 (44m). Milou van der Heijden went on to win the title.

THE CALVERTSTHE CALVERTSNot often a family of siblings hit the World Squash Tour. Often you see two or more brothers or two or more sisters making their mark but a mixture of sexes is rather rare.

The most successful Australian family of siblings would most likely be the Martins with Michelle and Rodney becoming world champions and brother, Brett reaching World #2.

Whilst not famous ... (yet) the Calverts are well on their way to enjoying impressive squash careers.

The oldest, Tom has already represented his country having been selected as a member of the 2012 Australian Junior Men’s team.

Younger sister Samantha followed suit representing Australia at this year’s World Junior Women’s Championships.

It was Sam’s proudest achievement: “It was something I had worked towards for a few years so to tick a major goal off the list was a great feeling”.

Now the pressure is on young Nick to follow in Tom and Sam’s footsteps. His goal is to do the same and knowing Nick he will most likely achieve what he sets out to do.

Currently, Nick enjoys a National junior ranking of #2 in Under 17s.

The Mackay Open will be the first Tour event in which the three of them will compete.

WN 189 and #5 seed Tom joined the Tour in November 2010 and received an initial ranking of 425.

He has steadily improved his ranking and reached the quarter finals of a tour event for the first time at the 2013 Mackay Open.

This year Tom has reached four quarter finals being the South Australian, Western Australian,

Tasmanian and the recent North Coast Open.

Sam is currently ranked 115 in the World and is seeded #8 for the Mackay Open.

Sam joined the tour in July 2012 with an initial ranking of 216.

Her best results so far have been two quarter final appearances in 2015 at the Australia Day Challenge and South Australian Open.

This will be Nick’s first Tour event and has made the main draw of 24 players.

With an initial World ranking of 455, Nick will be very keen to get that down and even better the achievements of his brother.

Both on and off court this family strives to be successful and ultimately, make a difference. Off court both Tom and Sam are studying toward becoming Sports Scientists.

Sam best explains what it is about squash that keeps her playing “I love everything about the sport! The competition, the friendships, the travel, the enjoyment, and it keeps me fit!”

The involvement of the Calvert family in our sport has made it so much richer. They all have great attitudes, a genuine friendliness and a desire to help squash grow by giving back.
