The next trip was with my own team, Dundee Dragons.winners of the Scollish league with 7 wins and 1 lossThis put them into the National Playoffs round oneagainst Trafford Saints in Manchester on 17 August Asit happened, I went on holiday to Greece earlier In Ihemonth and had already driven down, coincidentally, toManchester airport before the flight. I came back on Ihe15th and met Head Coach, Jim Oullaw and the team Ihenext evening at the sports club hall they were kipping inSince my girlfriend flatly refused to share a hall with 10malcontents, we stayed in a Travel Inn! The game wasaction packed and very tense with first the Saints takingthe lead then the Dragons took the lead by capping in the3rd, 4th and 5th innings. Then, it was up to the Dragonsto hold their lead as the Saints closed the difference andentered the bollom of the 7th only 3 runs down First upto bat scored a home run making the score 13-15Second was caught out with a pop up to centre fieldThird bailer got a walk and made it home on a senes 013 wild pitches. 14-15. At this point my heart was beatingso fast I thought I was about to have a heart allack! Nexlbailer struck out, 2 outs. Next 2 walked. I knew thai IIthose runners scored, it would have been all over Thenext bailer hit a pop up to 2nd base. The moment theDundee 2nd baseman caught the ball, every Dragonjumped several feet in the air accompanied by aresounding yessss! My girlfriend claims I thumpedstraight past her, causing her to fall over. All I remembelis running to the mound where all the Dundee 101 were

Next trip was the England v Scotland youth and seniorgames at Hessle on Saturday 14 July. I travelled downwith the Dundee and Edinburgh youths by car convoy thenight before and stayed in a youth ..-------------------------'Ihostel. That was fun - I thought I wasgoing to wake up the next day with aneyebrow missing or something! Thefirst to be played was the youth game.Due to various hitches back home, theScollish side was was made up ofmainly Aberdeen Reds and DundeeDragons. They were jointly managedby Jim Outlaw, the Dragons Coachand Mike Bell, manager of the Reds. This proved to be a successfulcombination resulting in a 6-2 win forScotland. Both teams played a highstandard of baseball, but the bellerteam on the day won through with 9good solid hits and 15 strikeouts out of21 put outs. Dundee Dragons catcher,David Farr, was awarded MVP. Thesenior game was a lot different. KeithGraham's Scolland squad slaughteredthe English side by 25 runs to 5. I don'tthink the sassenachs quite knew what ... .1
First one was when Scotland youth played two games infreezing cold Preston on 14 and 15 April. Under theleadership of Craig Menzies, the Youth Team playedjuniors from the Bobcats and other nearby teams. On theSaturday the first game started half an hour after wearrived and the Scotland team were capped in the first 2innings, resulting in an 11-6 loss. The second game wasplayed the next day. Scotland took the lead quickly witha 1st inning cap of 5 runs and dominated the rest of thegame, resulting in a win of 17-8. After spending theaftemoon in Blackpool Pleasure Land (yes, I was madenough to go on the massive Pepsi Max Roller Coaster)we headed home.
The Scollish Teams have had it lucky in previous yearswith little or no travelling south of the border. Not so thisyear. Each national team fravelled 3 times to England, while Dundee Dragons Youth went twice. I felt obligatedto travel with the teams and was at 6 out of the 8 awaygames. I travelled to all the youth games, either in mycapacity as Commissioner or as the Dundee Dragonsmanager.
It's been a funny old season for me. I havedone a lot of travelling to far off places such asPreston, Hessle, Manchester, Leeds,Cambridge and oh - not forgetting Greece.

NORTHERN CONFERENCECHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Thanks to the umpire for the game TomRoddick.
As Bobcats manager I have to be disappointedat the outcome but can congratulate the Tigersteam and reflect on an otherwise successful andenjoyable season.
There is no substitute for experience. Tigersalways seem to have the ability to up the tempoas and when needed to control the game and toprove the old adage that a winning team oftenscores more runs in one inning than theopposition in the whole game.
Preston Bobcats 5Liverpool Tigers 23
In this one, after three closely contestedinnings, Tigers pushed across nine runs in thefourth to put the game virtually out of reach.
Liverpool's Bob Alger had a no hit shut-outgoing until Mullen singled home A Howarth forPreston with two out in the sixth to spoil it.
The Tigers response was immediate - a threerun homer by Bassey in the next frame whichwas to be applauded although not muchappreciated by the home side.
One final word to the GB Coach at the British YouthSeries who said that it was the presence of some of theAmerican team. Aberdeen Reds. that won us thattournament. can rest easy. I won1 make you eat yourcap. I would suggest however. that you carry on holdingtrials for your cadet team. Unfortunately. most of theDundee Dragons Youth will be eligible to play only in thesenior team next year. Is that a phew I hear fromeveryone?

The last visit to England was for the BBF PONY LeagueplaY-Off Final. The Dundee Dragons beat KevinMacadam's team. Hessle Apaches 8-3 in the semi finalgame at RAF Edzell on 31 August. This put the Dundeeteam in the final against Hemel Red Sox. The game wasplayed in Cambridge after Dundee travelled a"mammoth" train journey of 7 hours. We arrived thenight before (as Hessle did in the semi-final) and JimOuttaw and I took the kids to the movies. The rookiesand I went to see "Multiplicity" while Jim took the olderplayers to see "Eraser". The game started at 11 am withKevin Macadam umpiring. Other than his low strike zonewhich was consistent anyway. his umpiring wasexcellent. Chris Outlaw's 3 run homer in the 3rd inningbasically sealed Hemel's fate. Chris went in to pitch thelast 3 innings and gained 8 strikeouts compared toWayne Harvey gaining 7 strikeouts in 4 innings. Chriswas awarded MVP for the game but I must mention herethat all the other Dundee players fielded very wellallowing no (advances on) errors and offence wasequally good with 11 hits and 7 walks compared toHemel's 3 hits and 3 walks).

England and aUS Forces side played a round robin over two days inLeeds Ian Smyth did a marvellous job of organising it.However. we (the Scottish contingent) felt that full youthIlIles should have been followed rather than the changesmade on the day. The scores wouldn't have been so sillyand far apart if the capping existed and allowing theslealing of all bases was inconsistent with the rest of theseason. The first game we played was against our auldenemy the English. They made a fatal mistake. Theywore Great Britain unifonms and everyone knows howScottish people feel aboul an English team beingbranded ·British·. It gave our guys the .motivation to wipeIhe floor wilh their butts! Score was 24-7. Next weplayed the US Forces and won 19-8. The last game wasagainst the Irish team. The first 3 innings were close butin the last. the Scottish team scored 4 home runs and 6olher hits making it enough to demoralise the Irishdefence into making 7 errors. End resull was a third winof 30-13. I think it is easy to say that the Scottand YouthTeam of 1996 is a fonmidable team to beat. Jim Outlawmanaged the team in July and August. so thanks andcongrats to you Jim. all the practice plus the cooperationof the Dundee. Edinburgh. Aberdeen and Glasgowlearns definitely paid off.
q~thering and hugging each other. A win. A first forDundee and for Scotland That was definitely thehmdest and closest game of the playoffs.
The atmosphere at the final in Cambridge was great.Almost every BBF official was somewhere about. Theburgers at the BBQ were great. there was a BBF stall runby Wendy & Rachael Macadam and Keith Peskett wasmanning the FBI stall. Nice man. I would like to givethanks to all the organisers who made the above games

A remarkable feature of the game was the highstandard of pitching from Hales of Leeds andEverett of Windsor.
Overall this was an excellent final, withWindsor becoming the 1996 National SchoolsChampions
In the bottom of the seventh, Hales struck outthe first two Windsor batters, then walked thenext two. One run scored on a single, reducing the deficit to 8-7. Then Everett tt1eWindsor pitcher drove a ball down the nghtfield line driving in two runs, and winning thegame for Windsor 9-8.

I know what he did.
He did no more than to throw the ball in thedirection of the voice of command Then herealised his mistake.
The man on second took off round third andhome. The man on first was already in theprocess of stealing second and kept on goingvia second, third and home, when all calmcame. The one batter remained and he fliedout to left field. So the Flyers won 7 to 5
What of the pitcher. Oh he carried on for afew more years then moved to left field buthe never got over the ordeal and kept veryquiet about it all until now. And at long lasthas allowed his name to be printed and I canassure all who read this story that it is true, because I was that pitcher.

It was early September 1952, one Sundayaftemoon around 2pm when the new pitcherfor the Senators Baseball Team stepped onto the rubber for his first big game. And fornine innings he held the Beeston Flyers to a5 - 5 draw. His pitching had held up ratherwell although he was starting to feel twingesof pain, in his pitching he still felt good.

Then the bottom of the ninth, and once againhe found himself the centre of attraction.First batter up hit him and got to second. Thesecond batter he struck out. The third batterwalked to first. Just two more outs, that's all,he thought. The next one went down on threestrikes, then he thought just this one.Stepping on to the rubber he felt the tensionmounting. He could feel the sweat coursingits way down his back plus the tightness in hisstomach. Just one more that's all he said tohimself.
Stepping backwards on to the rubber heprepared to pitch again, when all of a sudden,
Then it started 'come on rubber arm you'vehad it'. Now that hurt, so mustering what littlestrength was left he let fly with the ball to thecatcher. Strike called the umpire.

Finally the only other criticism I have of thebook was the print font. Although it looks verypleasant, it actually made reading the workdifficult. However these are minor problems.and I urge anyone interested in the history ofbaseball to get a copy. Read and learn
Day through his research answered thequestions what, when, and how, but the key tohistorical research for me personally is why?Why did the game develop in Middlesborough.why not another similar sized town. Hopefullythis may prompt another piece of work from MrDay
For anyone interested in baseball research thisbook is a gem. Not only does it describe thestory in precise detail, by following Mr. Day'swriting, it lays down a blue print for conductingresearch into local history.
The main section of the book features baseball, but there is also information on local football aswell.

The Bandits wish the Warriors the best of luck.
Yours sincerelyM S Harrold
I would like to compliment the Warriorsorganisation on the presentation of the games. The field was ready - on time - and the gamesactually started a minute or so ahead ofschedule. I was really impressed with the factthat the Warriors started their pre-game warmup at the right time and finished at the righttime (a rare thing in my experience of travellingto play games). The games were played in afriendly, yet competitive manner. The Warriorshospitality make it a pleasure to play eventhough we were soundly beaten.
Last weekend (21/22 September 1996) theBirmingham Bandits travelled to London toplay the London Warriors in the BBF PremierLeague Play Off Semi-finaL We lost to thebetter team.
It would be interesting to know what became ofthe Ritchie's when their mission wascompleted; did they stay here or return home;could they still be alive at some great age?Presumably they were brothers or related.Certainly British baseball owes something tothem for their efforts whatever became of them.

Dear Brrt-Ball
Orr Saturday 20 July, the LondonWolves hosted two games of what Iunderstood to be prestigiousbaseball The mornrng game wasbetween the Great Britain under18's squad and the Old Timers ofwhrch the former won by a score of24 - 4 There was much tocommend thiS game, the youngsters turned insome very good performances and there arecertainly some senior squad starts amongstthem However, what a woeful looking bunchthey were - I counted five different arrays ofuniform, even some ordinary t-shirts andshorts featured With the financial helpreceived from the BBF's coffers the four teamoffiCials and the presence of Bill Arce, I wouldhave expected a dozen sharp lookinguniforms I was always told and have read inmany books, that your uniform should becorrectly worn to create the feeling of wellbeing and to promote the team spirit, It wasIroniC that the Old Timers, who do not playleague ball were, in contrast, correctly andUniformly turned oul. There were aconsiderable number of youngsters present onthis day, who were undergoing trials for theJunior squad and or course many of theirparents also - what must they have thoughtlooking at the under 18s squad, not to mentionany casual spectators???
