VETERAN BALLPLAYER KEEPSCOMING BACK

by Gary Bedingfield

Circling the pitcher's mound, the rotund left-hander poundsa fresh white baseball into hisglove. He steps onto therubber, looks towards thecatcher for a sign, and aftergiving a barely noticeable nod, begins a slow, deliberate windup that sends a lazy curve-ballon its journey towards homeplate.

This quintessential fragment ofeveryday American life couldbe taking place anywhereacross the United States, butthe accents of the chatteringinfielders are distinctly AngloSaxon; and the game is,indeed, taking place on one ofthe few baseball diamonds inEngland.

Although the pitcher, RobNelson (everyoneaffectionately calls him Nellie),is in his mid-40s and facingbatters half his age, he did toilbriefly in the minor leaguesback home, and what his

Brit-Ball

fastball lacks in pace he morethan adequately makes up forin experience and guile. Butwhat Nellie really brings tobaseball is dedication and asense of fun, fuelled by alifelong passion for the game.

Off the field, the blonde hairedNelson, a native ofMassapequa, NY, bares theappearance of an overweightCalifornian surfer. But do notbe fooled, he is a self-mademan with a sound businessmind. As a struggling minorleague pitcher in the Pacificnorth-west he created "BigLeague Chew", the bubblegum equivalent of tobacco thathas become an essentialingredient for young Americanswanting to emulate their majorleague heroes.

When Nelson sold the idea toWrigley's with his businesspartner and former team-mateJim Bouton (Of Ball Fourfame), he had an income forlife - a comfortable one, thatallowed him to pursue hisdreams and pitch competitive

..

Brit-Ball

baseball around the world.SUbsequently, Nelson hasplayed for teams in SouthAfrica, Zimbabwe, Australiaand since 1991, the EnfieldSpartans in England.

Clocking up a mass of"frequent flyer miles", Nelsonspends the summer monthsbetween the north Londonsuburb and businesscommitments in the States, and declares there issomething special aboutplaying the game here. "Britishbaseball is fun to play", hesays, "Some of the games areragged, others are well played. But the fact that these gamesreally matter to the players, coaches, fans and umpires is awonderful thing".

During his first season inEngland Nelson's 12 winshelped guide the Spartans already a competitive teamwith a 22 year history - to thenational championships. His

•baffling curveball has sincebeaten the best teams fromMerseyside, Humberside andall across the south ofEngland, but each game is anew challenge and, as heexplains, a special experience

Page 15

"Everyone in life should getthe chance to feel as good, and as proud, as I do when Iwalk on to the ball field on ashining Sunday morning. Tome it's Christmas every time".

Last year, the Spartans hopesfor an appearance in the finalsended at RAF Menwith Hill, aremote US Air Force base onthe wind-swept moors of NorthYorkshire. It was meant to beNellie's final year in Englandand he displayed iron-mancapabilities, hurling all 18innings of a double header but lost both games.

No career should end that wayand Nelson will be back thissummer. In addition, he hasdecided upon one more goalbefore hanging up his glovefor good. "I want to win ahundred games as a Spartan,"he declares. If he makes it, itshould coincide with his 50thbirthday and the newmillennium.

The South London Ravens Pony league team were used in a film shootfor NBC/Chrysalis program about MLB stars last month. The programwill be shown on Sky Sports 3 in the UK over the first weekend of July.

Filming took place in the back streets of London and the set looked Iik~downtown Chicago or New York. The Ravens acted out the role~ 0

current MLB players when they themselves were young and dreamlmgof playing major league.

Filming took a whole day to complete but w~s a day all"-rlF:7i1'!' players enjoyed and will remember for some time.

It was rather strange that Frank'slast letter to Brit-Ball was aboutthe old St Louis Browns. Frankused to listen to the games on theAFN from Germany, and was ableto give you all the scores.

Since I moved to London I haveonly seen Frank at the BaseballClinics. He always greeted youwith a warm smile, then it was onto "baseball talk".

Frank was a good man and he willbe missed in the baseball world, but he has left his mark in theTigers and his teams in Preston.

He will not be forgotten.

Dear Editor

It was with great sadnessthat I heard of the deathof an old friend, FrankCaunce.

Reed, of the St LouisBrownes (Frank's favouriteteam). He was doing hisNational Service. In 1953 I

• was picked to play for aMerseyside All Star Team

L....__-, against the US Sealand AirI first met Frank about 1949, not Force Team at Edinburgh Pak,long after he came out of the Liverpool. John Reed was theArmed Forces. He was catcher, and I had got to know himpassionately fond of baseball and quite well by then. I introducedalways wanted to have his own him to Frank, and at long last heteam. He sent off to the States for had met someone from hisa team uniform with Tigers written beloved "Brownies".across the front of the shirt, but tryas he could he never managed toget the team off the ground. Atthe time I was playing forLiverpool Robins, and Frank alsoplayed for the Robins for a while. He mentioned to the Manager,Alan "Pop" Robertson that he hada new team uniform for sale, andhence Liverpool Robins becameLiverpool Tigers thanks to Frank.

This season Liverpool Tigers havebecome Lancashire Tlgercats, soa part of Frank still plays on in theJigers, as indeed it does with hisPreston teams.

In 1952, I was working near toSealand Airforce Base nearChester, and after work I would goover to the Base and watch themtrain. Eventually I got to knowthem and would train with them.Being a catcher, I asked if I couldhave some expert tuition fromtheir Major Legue catcher, John
