To: Dr. Simmons and Jenni Hubbard From: Madeline RiemanDate: April 21st, 2014Subject: Usability Research Report for Farmers Market Project

Introduction/Description of the usability study:This project will highlight the branding and marketing materials for the Hamilton Farmer’s Market. Through the editing and revising of the current marketing materials, the farmer’s market should significantly find that Jen-ni’s main objectives are met; raising awareness, increase of attendance and focus on the three major demo-graphics (young adults, adults with children and the older generations). My focus on readability, anticipation, consistency and emotional engagement for my usability study allows me to distinctly identify current problems with the marketing materials and branding. Once I had identified the major issues with the marketing materials, I was then able to revise the current standing materials to produce new marketing techniques that are the most optimal for the market.

Overview of the aspects you researchedFocusing on three major aspects for this project has brought light to the issues involved with the current promo-tional materials available to the users and community. With my interest in design as well as my knowledge of branding materials, I chose to focus on creating a new innovative way to promote the market.

· The Market Itself: Taking a look at the market allowed me to get a better idea of how the promotional materials should be used to create the most optimal concepts and designs. Becoming familiar with the market also created an emotional connection between me, and the community that I live so close too. Bringing the community closer through emotional engagement is important to our community partner as well as the city of Hamilton.

· The Market’s Facebook Page: Observations conducted on the existing Facebook page allowed me to find suitable revisions to help Jenni meet her goals of the overall increase in attendance. I also focused on how to get the users to come back to the market’s Facebook page on a regular basis. This is an im-portant step for the optimization of promoting the farmer’s market; this will allow the users to gain specific knowledge about the market on a weekly basis.

· My Specific Project: Since there is little promotion done for the market, I took a look at how other markets and businesses are able to inform the public of their services. Though a small study of other promotional materials, I found that the tailoring materials to each demographic is a good way to entice the public to come to the market in such a way that makes them feel special and important. Again, this meets one of Jenni’s objectives of increasing the attendance of the three major demographics she had indicated at our meeting. This also allowed me to find that different forms of materials are pertinent when informing the public of the market.

Methods and ResultsUsing two different systematic strategies, I was able to successfully evaluate the Hamilton farmer’s market’s Facebook page. First I created an evaluation heuristic which enabled me to collectively find problems and rate each category based on specific rules and values specific marketing materials should obtain. During this step of the process, I noted the principle that was significantly troubled for the materials, I then gave it a precise defi-nition, rated it on a scale from 1-5 (one being almost none existent and 5 being a successful application of that principle). Once I was able to rank the materials specifically on that principle, then I took a screenshot that eas-
