Notes from Terrie Berensten, Executive Director, Madrone Hospice, Inc.
As we all know, life is about change. Change can be viewed as positive or negative, dependent upon the mindset of a person or
situation. We here at Madrone have become masters of change; primarily due to the nature of Hospice.
Recently we have a wonder change in our Board of Directors. With great honor and respect, I would like to introduce you to Nancy Barnes, a long time Siskiyou County woman who accepted the boards offer of becoming a member.
Nancy Barnes, Board member, Madrone Hospice, Inc. 2013
In August, Madrone Hospice, Inc. welcomed new Board Member, Nancy Barnes. Nancy lives in Scott Valley with her husband, Rick, where they have raised commercial beef cattle on Limerock Ranch since 1974.
Nancy earned her Bachelor of Science degree and teaching credential from the University of California at Davis and taught Science and Physical Education in grades 7 -12 at Etna High School. Later she taught clothing construction for College of the Siskiyous and was a sewing leader and community club leader for Etna 4-H Club while she was raising her two children.
Currently Nancy spends her time gardening, quilting, doing genealogy, working on her 1905 farmhouse and traveling with her husband. She is a member of the Scott Valley Quilters, Friends of the Etna Library, Native Daughters of the Golden West and the Siskiyou County Cattlewomen.
Nancy was impressed by the quality of care and family support that was given to her mother-in-law during the final weeks of her life while she was living in Madrone Hospice House and is pleased and honored to be a part of this valuable organization as a Board member.
A message from Catey Olivolo,
President of the Board
Hospice and Palliative Care: Making a Difference
A hospice nurse was recently asked, “How can you work in hospice? It must be so sad!”
She answered, “I love providing highly-skilled, compassionate care because I know I make a huge difference in the quality of a person’s life. Hospice isn’t about dying, it’s about living as fully as possible despite a life-limiting illness. I love that I can use my training as a nurse to bring comfort and dignity to my patients and seeing the relief on their faces and on the faces of those who care for them. I love being a part of a professional hospice team that works together to offer individualized, holistic care to families when it is critically needed. I love that I can offer practical solutions to patients and families at one o f life’s most challenging moments.”
November was National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, a time to draw attention and raise awareness of this special kind of care. We want to continue in this quest for awareness year round.
What is Hospice Care?
Hospice care provides pain management, symptom control, psychosocial support and spiritual care to patients and their families when a cure is not possible. The nation’s hospices serve more than 1.5 million people every year, along with their family and caregivers as well.
Hospice care is fully covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and by most private insurances and HMO’s.
Many people only consider hospice care in the final days of life, but hospice is ideally suited to care for patients, families and caregivers for the final months of life.
What is Palliative Care?
Palliative care brings the same interdisciplinary team care as hospice to people earlier in the course of a serious illness and can be provided along with other treatments they may still be receiving from their doctor.
Hospices are the largest providers of palliative care services and can help answer questions about what might be most appropriate for a person. Many hospitals also have palliative care teams available to provide services. Hospice and palliative care are available to people of all ages with any serious or life-limiting illness.
Hospice and palliative care combine the highest level of quality medical care with the emotional and spiritual support for patients, families and caregivers. Hospice and palliative care can make a profound difference and help maximize the quality of life for all those they care for.

Hospice Informational Forum
Have you ever found yourself wondering what hospice really is? Is hospice care an uncomfortable
conversation to bring up? Are you not sure if you can afford it? Will your insurance cover hospice
care? You are not alone with these questions. There are many people in our community with the same
inquiries.
Listen to personal stories from people who have utilized hospice care and how it effected them and
their family; hear from those who have graduated from hospice. Have your questions answered by a
panel of hospice professionals. Our goal is for our entire community to understand hospice is a place
to turn to when you don’t know what to do. We offer understanding, compassion, quality care and
dignity for loved ones when end of life is near.
If you would like to understand what hospice is, please join us Wednesday, January 22, 2014 (location
to be determined), for our upcoming public forum regarding hospice and benefits we can provide for
your family. This forum will begin promptly at 5:30pm. For more information, please call 842-3160.
Voices for Hospice
We would like to extend a warm thank you
to everyone that helped make this year’s
Voices for Hospice a great success. Once
again we have been amazed by the talent
in our wonderful community. The generosity
among everyone that participated was
astounding, whether it was generosity with
their voice, or generosity with their baking
skills; you all made this a most pleasurable
evening. We look forward to seeing you all
again in October of 2015!!!
Thank you to all of our church community who participated
in this year’s Hospice Sabbath, November 10, 2013.
Every November is National Hospice Awareness Month. During the Hospice Sabbath, we
offer our churches the opportunity to take a moment during their sermon to speak about
hospice services and the benefits we offer. We also provide them with inserts for their
church bulletins and white roses as a symbol of remembrance. During this time, they may
even have a moment of silence to remember those loved ones that are no longer with us.
~ Breakfast Club ~
Please join us at the Purple Plum Restaurant
every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month. This is
a group for people who have had a loss. While
the group does not focus on loss, they do offer
companionship and friendship. Please call
530-842-3160 for more information.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!

and to volunteer for the shops, please pick up an
