Message from the Founder President

Dear Students,

I am very happy to present to you this year's college magazine, published by MIT School of Management.

When we set out on any endeavor in life we are always faced with a dilemma – To do the task or not to do it. Therefore, the theme for this year's Vihaan - “To be or not to be” couldn't have been more appropriate.

The times we are living in are one of the most crucial stages of mankind; it's a turning point, when we can prove to the world and to posterity, that when it counted the most, the people of India and particularly the youth proved their mettle. It's time to show the world what we are made of.

And thus I think it should not even be a question anymore for the youth – To Be or Not to Be. You just HAVE to BE, to carry on the good work started by your fore-fathers of building this nation into one of the strongest and prosperous nations of the world. Which means to strive for excellence in whatever work you may undertake. To be honest and hardworking citizens of India. To be innovative and be able to question the status quo, so that new ideas which can effectively solve our problems can flourish. To be enterprising in the field of business. To be ever thirsty for knowledge. To build strong, inclusive and lasting public institutions which bring communities together. To be so strong in our beliefs that we can build national assets which will serve many generations to come.

Lastly, I would like to whole-heartedly congratulate and thank all the individuals - members of the Aakriti club, teachers and students, to have brought out this magazine for our students, which is a pleasure to read and at the same time very enlightening. The text you are holding in your hands right now is the fruit of their labors of the past few months.

Dr. Vishwanath Karad.Founder, Executive President and Managing Trustee,

MAEERS group of institutions, Pune, India.

Message from the Executive Director

“Take risks in your life If you win, you can lead! If you loose, you can guide!” -Swami Vivekanand

Dear Students,

It has been a personal mission of mine to empower the youth, because of the belief that you are the creators of tomorrow.

At MIT School of Management this is practiced, a lot has been put into making the students ready to face the outside world and bring about change. I believe that the youth of today should be well equipped with knowledge to bring about a change for the betterment of society.

I am very ecstatic to see how the students have contributed to this issue of 'Vihaan' and I want to congratulate the 'Aakriti' team for their efforts. I wish the students immense success in whatever they choose in the course of their life.

Mr. Rahul KaradExecutive Director,

MAEER's MIT School Of Management, Pune, India.

Message from the Director

Don't be afraid to stand for what you believe in, Even if that means standing alone...

Greetings to one and all!

It gives me immense pleasure to present you with this year's college magazine Vihaan. First of all I would like to appreciate the efforts of our student-managers who have successfully brought out this magazine. This magazine provides students with a platform where they have the freedom to express their thoughts and explore their creativity.

When a student enters a management school he/she is a manager from day one. So, you are a manager, and that should be evident from your actions in everyday life. Being Management students, you are now on the verge of entering into the corporate world. The world is changing fast. The technologies that were once new are being modified rapidly, to such an extent, that new inventions and innovations are coming up every day. This is the result of the hard-work of a few smart people who dared to think differently and who have made our lives easier!

Tomorrow you all are going to face a world full of challenges and full of options – some may be right, some wrong. Selecting the right option will be a tough task. Do what you love to do. Living a fulfilling and relevant life is an achievement and not something that will fall into your lap. You will have to work hard for it. So dream big and start working towards realizing your dreams from today onwards.

It is my firm belief that if one has ideals like innovation and leadership, no one can stop you from being different from others. It is your duty to perform the tasks that are entrusted upon you efficiently and it is your right to change what needs to be changed. I would also like you to step forward and see the world from the shoes of a leader and not limit yourself only to a manager's perspective.Don't just follow the system; make the system follow you instead!

Brig.(Retd.) Dr. R. K. BhatiaDirector,

MAEER’s MIT School of Management, Pune, India.

Message from the Head, Editorial Club

The theme of this year's issue of Vihaan 'To be or not to be', is one of the most famous lines in English Literature. It brings to the fore the juxtaposition of alternatives that we face in the day to day course of life. An alternative or choice is something that we face irrespective of our origins, upbringing and social class. Choices bring change and a chance to be happier and content. Nothing deprives a man of the chance to embrace change, a chance to live a better life and a chance to make other's lives better. 'It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities'

One would say that we face situations where we are forced to take the middle path instead of one of the extremes as restrictions imposed by our culture and society act to limit our choices. However, strength of character and integrity of an individual go a long way to explain why some people like Swami Vivekanand, Bhagat Singh, Martin Luther King, B.R. Ambedkar, Verghese Kurien, Anna Hazare and several others were able to make choices that led to great social good and upliftment of the people. As students and young professionals, we must endeavor to move above the banal and embrace the unique, higher path. We must strive to become responsible citizens of the country and contributing members of the society.

Our annual magazine, Vihaan - beyond the horizon, is an attempt to empower the students to express their thoughts, on the 'multiplicity of choices' through articles, poems and pictures. Other highlights of the magazine include reports related to various events, clubs & forums, placement department, courses, achievements etc.We hope that you enjoy this magazine as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Life With Demands!!!

My life demands an answer from me... Why am I here? To be or not to be?

I have some reasons to be happy...

I have some problems to see...

Why I forget to bear a smile on my face?

Why am I running an infinite race?

Why things around are changing so fast? Can’t they maintain a rhythm, a pace?

I have hope in my heart...

I have strength in my arms...

But don’t know why, I am losing the grip... Life is escaping just like sand...

My life glides and runs on its own... My thoughts are dead, not blown...

It’s my way, It’s my path...

Why should I care about the stones thrown?

Where is the innocence that we lost?

Where is the ocean that we crossed?

Why so many complexities to think about?

Why am I so weak? Why I often shout?

What am I looking for? Where is the key?

Why am I here? To be or not to be?

With wide eyes I looked on few things... Decoding life, discovering new things...

Life is all about exploring...

Do all you can, do more and more... Trials and obstacles will come together...

Then happiness will lead us forever...

TO LIVE OR NOT TO LIVE THE WAY I WANT

Yes I want to live the way I want…but can I? Do I really want to live the way I want? Do I have

the guts needed to live the way I want? Can I be so true to my instincts, to my feelings that I will

go with them every time? Is there a doubt in my mind as tox what if I live the way I want?

When I was a child I was told that I had to do certain things and I was punished on doing certain

other things. It was very seldom that it was explained why exactly I was not allowed to do those

things….why were certain things right and certain things wrong? Who classified things? Aren’t

right and wrong very relative terms? Certain things which are normal for me may be obscene for

someone else and vice versa. How can we generalize things?

If I want to live the way I want there should not be any hindrances. But still if I can’t then who is

to be blamed? What all things restrict me from living the way I want?

Let’s deal with all such factors one by one.

Caste system- who am I? Does my caste define me? Does my caste make me superior or

inferior? My caste doesn’t allow me to do certain things...if I am a Brahmin my caste does not

allow me to consume non-vegetarian food...If I am a Jain I cannot eat tubers…if I am a Muslim I

need to be on fast during my roza…does these change the person I am…does this change my

thoughts? Not completely but yes it has a strong influence for sure…but then what is education

for? Aren’t I taught not to be racist? Then if I want to follow Buddhism or Hinduism it has to be

my decision as a person. Not something which was decided for me by virtue of my birth.

Gender inequality- the way I am being brought up hugely depends upon my gender...especially

in India. There are different rules for the boy and girl of the same family. Gender equality is a

term which is used and followed very conveniently. So if I am a guy it’s easy for me to live the

way I want but not the case if I am a girl.

Social status- just to maintain my social status I have to behave in a certain way. Or it will be

more apt to say that I am taught to behave in a certain way.

Social taboos- these restrict me from doing certain things….thus encroaching upon my freedom.

Same is the case with religion and religious beliefs…a Hindu family won’t eat meat. This isn’t

out of choice many a times. It has been a tradition. Every generation followed it just because the

prior generation did.

Page 17: MAEER’s ESTD.:1987 MIT SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT · PDF fileSarang Chafekar Prerna Chadha Neha Jadhav Varun Vaze Rucha Kulkarni Vishwambhar Kokare Kalyani Joshi Vaibhavi suryavanshi

Education- education is all about making me more aware about myself and my beliefs. But still I

am not completely free from other constraints. Thus I am in a fix. I find myself caught up

between my heart and my mind.

And the biggest hindrance is me…my thinking…sometimes my cowardice….inability to go

against the current….addiction to safety and security…fear of unknown.

When I wish to live the way I want to, I need to search for things which I find are right….but

does this mean those things are right? Aren’t right and wrong both terms very relative? One that

seems to be normal for me may be obscene for someone else.

If I live the way I want…everyone is going to criticize me…..and if I live following all the rules

and regulations, I still can’t escape criticism. Then why should I care? As long as I think and

believe that whatever I am doing is right, I will always continue to live the way I want.

Wish not so much to live long, as to live well...

The beauty of ugliness:

The beauty of life lies not in its purity or perfection

The beauty of life stands tall and with great attention

The beauty of life moves in all directions, always forward,

Some times in contradiction

The beauty of life drives man to survive with all of the power horses can contrive

The beauty of life jumps to all levels of delight

Great and ornate to a very placated state

The beauty of life flies with weightless wings

Dreams that keep us aflight because of their

Reality and possibility to become means.

The beauty of life rises after every fall, always

Towards the end of the farthest star in the

Most distant constellation, infinitely far.

Waking up one fine morning to notice in the mirror, a large pimple on your face protruding out as

if saying “hello there!”. The next instance you find yourself exclaim with all the eeeww’s and aww’s how

silly and ugly it looks. When that happens try out paradigm shift! It’s very comforting! Paradigm shift implies

the process of changing perceptions, preferably in a more optimistic light. We all, though we may not have

confessed to it, have suffered a breakdown –be it due to stress, burden or simply hormonal imbalances! These

processes are thought to be natural! For some it’s a strongly rooted belief system, that, stress, burden is so

natural, very human! Have you ever noticed a newly born baby??? Does it look stressed to you? NO! It’s

always smiling with glee, ready to take on what life has to offer to it! Then why do we get stressed???It’s

definitely not natural!!

Our lives revolve around the dualities of life: good and evil, white and black, beauty and ugliness,

right and wrong, happy and sad and so on. What if we could look at life and just see what’s in front of us,

without putting a label on it. When the labelling machine is turned off you start to notice life in a different

light and your life is a little more laid back. When you stop labelling others you will stop labelling yourself as

well. You will become – just you!

The major creator of stress is expectation! We all expect perfect lives-with the perfect looks, oodles of money,

perfect families, perfect job, perfect homes, perfect EVERYTHING! Have you realised in the course of

expecting so many humanly impossible things, you yourself are piling on your levels of stress! Time to

change!! Nobody is perfect! That’s true! If you try to make your life like somebody else’s when will you enjoy

being YOU??!

Moral of the story: accept the imperfections and move on, you cannot be perfect at all times! Cause trying to

achieve the latter is like banging your head against a stone!! Bear in mind, a stone is a stone, was and always

will be! Likewise are certain imperfections.

To be or not to be...

Awaiting a decision to be made,

So bold yet ethical and righteous,

Based on three devoted pillars,

The ghosts of the past,

An illusion of the present,

A vast untouched and yet a visible future,

All entwined and similarly demoralizing,

The demons of the past,

Gods and the Idols of today,

Kings, Queens and the Rulers of tomorrow,

All the forces combined,

Coaxing you to take a step small for me but a big leap for them,

It is a leap of destiny and I must take it,

To prove my strengths and overcome my weaknesses,

It feels like I am stranded,

On this forsaken island of thoughts,

Alone in despair I wait for help,

Yet none arrives and none will,

As it is my predicament that they await,

Feels lonely and without a direction,

This is a mysterious phase,

Something never thought of,

That i wished never existed,

Always prayed for a place where serenity was at its best,

A place destined for you and your thoughts alone,

Did not know it would be so dreadful when responsibilities engulf you,

Yet I have to bear the burden,

To take a decision that will be wise,

A thought that will make the impossible perish,

The one that will help me ground my feet,

A decision that will conquer all the critics and negatives,

Have to come on the top as a leader,

Should reach the moral pinnacle,

Hold a force that can make me earn respect,

To make me look capable and virtuous,

A decision personified and the repercussions justified,

Should not be self adhered yet be ambitious,

The dubious mind has a turmoil of its own,

Heart is emotional tethered to its wandering prejudice,

There is a mere arrogance of the self centered thoughts,

The crumbling of faith and the cherishing of fear,

Thus the tricky part starts,

Duel between self and the universe arises,

To give rise to a demon or a saint in you,

Which rests on one and only one fettered decision in this ambiguity,

The answer to the whirling thoughts and spiraling ego,

Many self sustaining thoughts provokes a typhoon,

Which upon resting will help me make a provocative end to the question,

TO BE OR NOT TO BE....

RISK OVER CERTAINITY OR NOT - Entrepreneurship or Employment

Indian history is replete with many incredible stories of men having exceptional knowledge and vigour who established their own business empires. The credit of this can be traced back to our ancestors, who always had an entrepreneurial streak. Time and again we have heard of stories about how a son took the family business well ahead of his father’s expectations. Many a son has surpassed his father’s abilities. An excellent example would be that of the late Mr. Dhirubhai Ambani and his sons. Today, Reliance Industries Limited stands where no one could have ever thought possible. Companies today offer job opportunities in abundance; this solves the problem of unemployment to a certain extent. This brings new talent into the company; the company then uses the intellectual abilities of these employees for its own benefit. Here a problem arises - that of conflicting objectives - on the one hand, the company wants to maximise its profit and wealth and on the other hand, the employees look at their own personal interests of salary and personal growth. Today we see many companies offering hefty salaries, sometimes to avoid brain drain, sometimes to attract the best talent. With a job comes security of salary at the end of the month, long hours and a rigid framework to be followed. An entrepreneur is an individual who organises and operates a business. Entrepreneurship is concerned with opportunity recognition and exploitation. This requires certain traits, like, risk-taking, good leadership, innovation etc. which only a few possess. Some people dare to step out of the shadows. These are the ones who have an entrepreneurial spirit and a strong desire to have a business of their own by using their talent and skills. Steve Jobs (Macintosh), Bill Gates (Microsoft), etc were pioneering minds that chose freedom over security. The way up the ladder though, is difficult. Long hours, low returns, uncertainty, high risks, etc are all constant companions. Capital required to start up is another major hurdle that entrepreneurs face.

In reality, not all passions match with the realities of the job market. In fact, the people who get to do what they love, for a job, are the lucky ones; they're not the majority. A better goal is to find work that you can do and it's not for everyone. It's not as easy as just having a skill and selling it. You have to have a product that people want to buy from you rather than your competitors. You also have to be able to market yourself, deal with financial uncertainty reasonably happily; it doesn't need to be your passion. Starting your own business is hard, have some savings as a launch pad and overcome plenty of other challenges. So which is better? Entrepreneurship or a job? No one can answer that question but you. It all depends on your drive, your capacity to take risks and your goals in life. You may be ideal for one at one stage in your life and shift to the other at a later stage. “Choose a job that you like and you will never have to work a day in your life”

Selflessness vs. Selfishness

Humane or Human?

Am I a selfish or a selfless person? Am I human or humane? How many times have you asked

this question to yourself, either standing in front of a mirror or while going to sleep after a hard

day’s work? The answer for most of us perhaps, would be that we rarely get the time to

introspect about such things in today’s fast-paced world, where people do not have the time to sit

back and give a thorough thought about these words which are perceived as unimportant or

trivial.

From the point of view of the corporate world, a person is required to be thick-skinned and

professional in order to stay ahead of the rat race or as they say to ‘SURVIVE’.

The concept of SELFLESSNESS: In simple words, selflessness means to be considerate about

the needs and comforts of others before your own and to perform noble deeds without expecting

anything in return.

The concept of SELFISHNESS: It is the other side of the same coin, which means that it is

expressed negatively or has negative connotations.

Given the above concepts, referring to an individual as being Selfless or Selfish in its absolute

meaning would be incorrect. No person can be absolutely selfish or selfless. The extent to which

a person is selfish or selfless depends upon his overall up-bringing. The social background of a

person defines a person’s reaction to different situations, which in turn, brings out his selfish or

selfless attitude.

As explained above, a person cannot be absolutely selfish or selfless, as too much of any one of

these attitudes is harmful for a person. It is said that being selfless or having a sense of altruism

is important for a human being to become humane. However, selfishness is also a necessity,

especially in today’s world where there is immense competition present in the respective trades.

Selfishness in a way maintains or retains a person’s individualism or identity. It also helps in

maintaining a person’s ego state. Selflessness and selfishness are two sides of the same coin. A

person needs to have hinge of both the attitudes.

Count not the cost of giving, give of yourself with love,

The secret of all true living is reaching out all the while...

Humane in the real sense:

Let us talk about some well known personalities, who in the real sense of the term are the epitome of selflessness.

The first name that comes to one’s mind is MOTHER TERESA, her noble endeavours and vision

of making the world a better place to live in, through love and affection towards others.

The next personality in the list is Mr. Warren Buffet, Founder and Chairman of Berkshire

Hathaway, who has helped the world through his altruistic nature. He himself leads a very simple life and is a strong adherent of selflessness.

The list continues with personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., etc who have put the welfare of mankind before their own comfort and helped in making the world a better

place to live in.

Having said that, these renowned personalities also had a hidden sense of egocentricity or self-

interest, which explains that a human cannot be humane in its absolute sense, but has the selfish hidden somewhere within him.

T o B e P ol it i ca l or A pol i ti ca l

Since the time when man gave up nomadic existence and organized society began and the concept of government came into being, politics has been the single most important area which has captured his imagination. It has become a part of our DNA. Aristotle also said, that, “Man is by nature a political animal”. Thus, it is in our very nature to be po litical. We can demonstrate the importance of politics by just looking at the sheer no. of political thinkers throughout the ages in various countries across the globe. Right from the time of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, etc in ancient Greece to the medieval European political thinkers like Machiavelli, Thomas Aquinas, etc to the post renaissance philosophers like Baruch Spinoza, Immanuel Kant, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Edmund Burke, John Stuart Mill, John Locke, etc, politics has been the single most important area of man’s concern. Similarly, In India, we have had many important political thinkers like Kautilya who wrote the arthashastra and the ancient Vedic philosophers who wrote the manusmriti. But since the time of the two world wars, there has been a significant decline in the field of political philosophy with no major school o f thought emerging in recent years. With the establishment o f democracy in most countries of the world and the emergence of a huge middle-class population across the world after world war-2, people have been more concerned with their personal consumerist attitudes and the interest in po litics in the minds of the public and particularly the youth has been on the wane. This is a very bad sign and it is extremely important for the preservation of the freedom and independence they so love and cherish, that they should actively participate in politics. As the Greek philosopher Plato said – “One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors”. And that is exactly what is happening currently across the world. Just an overview of the quality of leadership in var ious countries will bring out this fact clearly. As an example, when the recent US presidential elections took place, most Americans were searching for the names of the nominees for the election on the internet on the day pr io r to the voting. This shows how careless we have become. Also, the quality o f debates that took place between var ious nominees has also declined, as compared to previous elections. Talk ing about our own country, here also, the level of public d iscourse has hit rock-bottom. Main reason for this is the entry of many illiterate persons against some of whom there are serious criminal charges in courts of law and the ignorance and apathy of the public to politics. The individual may belong to any section of society or he may be engaged in any profession, it is vital to be aware of political developments taking place around us. To take an example from the world of business, any entrepreneur or marketing executive has to do a PEST analysis before he can develop, market or launch a product into the market. Here P is the first factor that he has to consider , which stands for ‘Political factors’. Therefore, an individual may or may no t actively get involved in politics, but it is extremely important in any modern society, rather, indispensable for his survival, to at least be aware of the po litical developments taking p lace in the county.

“Distances” The distances between you and me..

and the mere absence of milestones

still walking towards you

as once I swore...

But someone is playing with my weak nerves ...

meanwhile inability of my blood to go beyond the curbs..

who is it..?

Its the rain...

OH! please not again

the pointed tip of my pain

ready to pierce it again...

what is it...?

My eyeballs..

beneath my eyelid

they failed to crawl !!

the ripples of my breathe

caused quivering of my lips

my shoulders are laid beneath

the self mounted heaps!!

the heaps?

The heaps are of

uncountable dreams ...

unstoppable screams...

of it and but of my ailing heart!!

strange showers of tears,

trickling down the eyes

creating 'crest' and 'trough'

of ‘rise’ and ‘fall’ !!

Boundaries are taking you far away

leaving me in a restricted zone

the distances between you and me...

Is 50 the New 60?

We are in the best phase of our lives in our 20s. Learning to earn soon. And what is it

that is keeping us on our toes? Is it just our passion, ambition and zest for life? Or is it also

the pressure to sustain in the competition for survival and responsibilities that will come our

way? Sharing family responsibilities is just one of the facets of the gem of a person you ought

to be. The others, I’m sure, are here to welcome you with open arms. But hey, life is not just

about worrying, or is it?

Gone are the days when ‘young at heart‘was a phrase that referred to people in their

second innings of life. Employees are retiring early, planning their career and sculpting it

time to time, with the most minute details, as to how and when should they retire after all

their present and future demands are met. Also, early retirement is now considered as a

‘bonus’ to your ‘quality life’! The ‘young at heart’ life starts right here! This life has the

satisfaction of money, satisfaction of the time spent with your family and a general feeling of

self-contentment. And how is it so?

Imagine a person in his/her late 50’s working in an environment that he/she has not liked

much. Being in such an age group, many of them refuse to accept challenges and new

techniques in their routine kind of work. Be it a Government service, a private job or an

owned business even! The only motive behind somehow completing those ‘compulsory

working hours’ is to earn money. And why do you think that is so? That’s because they are

not yet secure about the amount of money they have, to spend the rest of their lives, post-

retirement.

Enough of blaming on the person now! Don’t you think the overall ‘job’ environment that

existed till late emphasized more on the ‘honorary retirements- working till the very last day

of your eligible employment’, the much applauded ‘extension periods- creating a niche for

yourself by offering more dedicated service’ and the mental calculations of your ‘well-

deserved pension plans’. Nobody stressed on the quality of work, the individual’s

productivity for the company, the team efforts and not even their grievances. The company

policies were too rigid to be bent. Hence, the employees often, if not rarely, faced the

challenges and many a times, were congratulated for their work.

Found the sole reason for such a thing to happen? The answer lies in the difference between

two words- Job and Career! When we take a look at the ‘Career’ aspect of the current trend of

15VV

Page 29: MAEER’s ESTD.:1987 MIT SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT · PDF fileSarang Chafekar Prerna Chadha Neha Jadhav Varun Vaze Rucha Kulkarni Vishwambhar Kokare Kalyani Joshi Vaibhavi suryavanshi

any employee, such drawbacks are immediately noticable. How exactly does the ‘Career’

path affect the number of years that an employee works? Firstly, he/she educates

himself/herself to suit the requirements of the work that he/she wishes to dedicate his/her

professional life to. Secondly, he accepts new challenges, goes through various training

programs and quenches his/her thirst for knowledge. He/she sets up his/her own levels of

expectations that he/she has from his/her Career and after achieving each one of it, he/she is

completely satisfied to have succeeded in that level. If such a well-defined structure of one’s

road to success-within a specific time period is set, there is absolutely no need for the person

to work till 60! Such a person shall obviously retire happily, in his 50s and spend time for

society, family and self!

Yes, with such a career-oriented lifestyle, people may ignore health-related issues.

Workaholics tend to disregard their family matters. Also, fulfilling additional responsibilities

is an additional strain! Agreed that the career oriented lifestyle, in every way, is capable of

planning a great future ahead, the ‘present’ is much ignored. Whereas, people at their ‘jobs’

were excellent at balancing their ‘work-life’ successfully. They always welcomed quality

time to be spent with their family, accepted additional responsibilities and used to relax often.

Which one is better then? And does the better one make the other one look dumb? Well,

that’s for every individual to decide! This decision resembles the concept of the ‘Time value

of money’. The perception of this decision may depend upon the ‘Time value of your life’!

50 may be the new 60. But with time, it will either recede more or get back to the aura of

sweet sixties! Who knows? Only time can tell!

Ayurveda -A Trustworthy Treatment?

Ayurveda, which means “science of life”, is probably the world’s oldest system of natural medicine. It originated in India about 5000 years ago and it stems from the ancient body of spiritual teachings known as the Vedas. Some historians believe that Ayurveda was the original basis for Chinese medicine. In our country, Ayurveda deals with eight main branches of medicine: pediatrics, gynecology, obstetrics, ophthalmology, geriatrics, otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat),general medicine and surgery. The main goal of Ayurveda is to achieve optimal health on all levels: physical, psychological and spiritual. This is achieved via theories and techniques that focus on diet, exercise, meditation, yoga and massage. Ayurveda emphasizes the use of plant-based medicines for treatment. Some animal products are also used such as milk and bones. Moreover, minerals such as sulfur, arsenic, lead, copper sulfate are also prescribed. This is known as rasa shastra. Ayurvedic practitioners deal with diagnosis by using all five senses. Ayurvedic doctors regard physical and mental existence together with personality as a unit, each element having the capacity to influence the others.A vital point to be noted here is that Ayurveda is principally a “person-specific” approach. This means that two individuals, even though they may have the same symptoms, might be treated very differently in terms of herbal remedies, diet, exercise, etc. It is this very individualization that makes it difficult to design Western-style clinical trials of Ayurvedic treatment regimes. However, progress is being made in this area. It is believed that an estimated 80% of Indian population uses Ayurveda in some form, although it is often clubbed with conventional medicine. There are over 100 colleges which offer degrees in traditional Ayurvedic medicine and more than 250,000 Ayurvedic practitioners in India. At the beginning of 1960’s, Ayurveda had begun to be considered as “alternative medicine” in the West. However, due to the diverse nature of laws and medical regulations around the world, the unregulated practices and commercialization of Ayurvedic medicine had raised ethical and legal issues. The individualistic approach along with absence of an adequate amount of research, has questioned the reliability of this field of medicine. In some cases, Ayurvedic practices have been adapted specifically for Western consumption; this has unfortunately led to active fraud on the part of some advocates of Ayurveda, in an attempt to falsely represent the system as being in conformity with the standards of modern medical research. For example, Abana is a combination of herbal and mineral formulation that has been traditionally used in Ayurveda for improved heart health. Abana may improve heart function but further research is needed before a recommendation can be made. Ayurveda emphasizes that whatever is present in the universe or Macrocosm is also present in the individual body or Microcosm. Man is a miniature of nature; hence, basic components of man and the universe are the same. Thus, the use of Ayurvedic herbs for treatment of ailments does not create any side effects. On the other hand, as a traditional medicine, many Ayurveda products have not undergone rigorous testing. As a result, there is insufficient evidence to determine whether they are effective

17VV

Page 31: MAEER’s ESTD.:1987 MIT SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT · PDF fileSarang Chafekar Prerna Chadha Neha Jadhav Varun Vaze Rucha Kulkarni Vishwambhar Kokare Kalyani Joshi Vaibhavi suryavanshi

and whether they result in any long-term side effects or health concerns or not. According to a 1990 study on Ayurvedic medicines in India, 41 percent of the products tested contained arsenic and 64 percent contained lead and mercury. In 2012 the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that Ayurvedic drugs have links to lead poisoning on the basis of some cases presented, where some pregnant woman had taken Ayurvedic drugs and toxic materials were found in their blood. What is even more worrying is the fact that reliable information on herbal toxicity is not readily available. Despite all this, Ayurvedic practitioners are unwilling to admit that herbs could be toxic. Thus, a communication gap exists between modern medical practitioners and Ayurvedic practitioners. Hence, even though Ayurveda as a field of medicine may be trustworthy, a lot more scientific research and study is required to definitively prove the same.

Darjeeling is located in the sub-Himalayan belt of Eastern Himalayas. To reach Darjeeling we had to go from New Jalpayguri by local tourist vehicles. The culture of Darjeeling is quite diverse. The Tibetan ethnic groups like Lepchas, Bhutias, etc celebrate New Year called “Losar” in January to February. A popular dish in Darjeeling is the “Momo”, a steamed dumpling containing mutton/pork/beef/vegetables, and served with a watery vegetable soup. The main occupation of the local population is hospitality and selling warm cloths. The localities are very polite, honest and loyal. Buddhist monasteries showcase the Pagoda style of architecture. It is also regarded as a centre of music. The notable places to visit include Tiger Hill, Zoo, Monasteries and the Tea gardens.

Gangtok is the Capital and largest town of the Indian state of Sikkim. It is located in the eastern Himalayan range, at an altitude of 5800 feet. The population comprises of different people like Nepalis, Lepchas and Bhutias. The climate is very cold in winter, falling up to 2 degree Celsius below zero. The city is flanked on east and west by two streams namely Rorochu and Ranikhola. The city is very clean and is under the care of the Military. The main occupation of the people is hospitality. Finance Forum

INDUSTRIAL VISITNATIONAL STOCK EXCHANGE (NSE) – MUMBAI

The industrial visit to National stock Exchange (NSE) was organised by th

Finance Forum on 12 October 2012 in Mumbai. All the senior members of the forum, which was a mix of students from finance, marketing and HR participated. The entire batch of forum members was accompanied by Prof. Vinita Ahire (Club-mentor) and Prof. Sunil Adhav.

Apart from students of MITSOM, there were students from four other colleges present for the sessions. The entire program was divided into two knowledge-filled sessions.

The first session conducted in the auditorium was about capital markets (equities cash) i.e. listing of securities, types of transactions on stock exchange, norms of NSE for transactions, so on and so forth. The information disseminated in this session was quite useful and interesting as it dealt with the practical implications of theoretical knowledge which students already have. After the session, students resolved their queries regarding the capital markets, in particular, equities cash. The second session dealt with the basics of derivatives (futures and options) and their trading on NSE. Also, students got an opportunity to see live trading of derivatives on screen in the auditorium which made understanding derivates easier.

Overall, the visit turned out to be a perfect combination of learning and enjoyment, which was possible only because of enthusiastic students and encouraging faculty members.KNOW-IT-ALL Finance Forum conducted a general quiz

thnamed “Know-it-all” on 27 Feb’12, for all the forum and non-forum members. This was the first event organized by the MBA Semester-II members of Finance Forum. The general quiz had two rounds – 1st question answer round and 2nd was concentration video round. Winning team members were Tanmay Jadhav and Arpit Deshpande.

HR FORUM

The zeal of HR forum was evident as its members were prompt in organizing events for students.

Know yourself… better! Was the first activity conducted by the HR forum. It was basically the inaugural activity for the forum. The activity was a great success with huge participation from MBA juniors, MPM juniors and seniors from both the courses. The activity was about personality analysis with a systematic assessment of understanding behavioral styles” with rating each behavior as A, B, C and D. The behavior pattern of each personality was described in detail. Also strengths and weaknesses of each personality were

given. The participants were also given directions and suggestions of converting their weaknesses into strengths. Most importantly this activity clearly helped the participants in knowing “what motivates each personality?” so that they can always keep themselves motivated. The duration of the activity was 1 hour and 30 minutes and “it definitely was worth the time” as stated by one of the juniors.

The huge response f rom the participants with a total strength of 87, including 60 juniors was definitely worth the efforts that each member of the HR forum's core team had put in. The huge response and encouraging feedback from the participants acted as a catalyst for the HR forum team and motivated it to conduct more such intriguing activities in future.

The HR Forum screened the popular film The Secret as the second activity. It can be described a self help film which uses a documentary format to describe the “Law of Attraction”. The film focuses on leading examples of life coaching, personal development and success which are very important for every student. The film screening was attended by more than 30 students from MBA and MPM courses. Everyone gave a positive review about the movie.“HR Forum Mini Activity”

th HR Forum mini activity was conducted for MBA juniors on Friday, 19 October. This activity was aimed at conducting an interactive session with the HR forum members. All the forum members were divided into groups and each group was given a topic for role play. This activity was aimed at checking presence of mind of the members and to check how they would react to unexpected situations.

Apart from role play, a quiz based on recent affairs was conducted. It is very important that students have knowledge about all the important events that are happening in the country and around the world. This was aimed at testing the knowledge of the members. There was lot of enthusiasm among the members and we got a positive response from the participants.

MARKETING FORUM

The academic year of 2012-2013 has been pleasantly eventful for the Marketing Forum. With newer and more innovative activities carried out, the Marketing Forum has proven, yet again, to be a dynamic platform for students to showcase their dexterity and skills, which otherwise go unnoticed.

The Big Brand TheoryThe first event of the Marketing Forum was “The Big Brand Theory”. As the name

suggests, the event was a quiz competition which was based mainly on knowledge of popular brands worldwide. The event was judged by Prof. Umesh Nath, Prof. Girish Mude and Prof.Neelam Raut. The Big Brand Theory was conducted in three rounds. The first round was a Questionnaire round in which a set of questions was given to the participants. The questions were of General Category and the top scoring teams proceeded to the next rounds. Round 2 and 3 were based on guessing the Brand names from visual and textual clues respectively. This event showed an unprecedented participation from MBA as well as MMM students.

The winners of the event, Siddhesh Palsule & Aniket Pingale were awarded Certificates by the judges.Field Work at 'Big Bazaar' & 'Food Bazaar at Pune Central' Retail Stores:

The members of Marketing forum were given the opportunity to understand the different retailing activities involved in sales of goods at two major retail chains 'Big Bazaar' and 'Food Bazaar at Pune Central'. The major purpose was to understand the overall concept of Sales Promotions by participating in the sales promotions strategies used by Future Group. The Marketing forum of MITSOM had approached the retail chains with a formal proposal for deploying 15 of its members as temporary workforce for their biannual sale of '6 Din Maha-Bachat' during the sale-time rush during Independence Week in August. The experience was highly rewarding and gave students a firsthand experience of store management, customer handling and product placement in stores. The efforts put in by students were recognized by the Retail Managers and Certificates of Appreciation were also awarded to them.

The Marketing Forum also arranged a screening of the movie “Glengarry Glen Ross” on 25th October, 2012.The movie is very relevant in today's scenario when it comes to ethics & selling unwanted goods to customers and therefore a must-watch for every student aspiring to be successful in the field of Marketing and Sales.

INDRADHANU ’13……. The colors of creativity

The performing art club organizes different programs, competitions in Music – Singing, Playing Instruments, Classical and Western, Dance – Classical and Western, Drama – Stage and Street Plays. This year also students organized many events & also participated in different competitions organized by various colleges.

The different events organized under the club during the year are:EINSTEIN:

The play Einstein, written by Gabriel Emanuel a Canadian writer, is a 30 year old celebrated script. The play is about Einstein’s life, told by Einstein

himself. He recounts his journey from childhood to his rise to a figure of authority in science and his eventual surrender to the political tyranny of the Germans."

“A scientist belongs to science in times of peace, but to his country in times of war.”The play makes us compulsory to think about the relevance of virtues even in the rational field of science and the dilemma of a scientist. Will he give up his pacifist views only to save himself from being ostracized? Or will he surrender, like others in the testing times of war?

The act was performed by Mr. Jitendra rd

Wankhede on 3 September 2012 at 5.30 pm in Room no. 506. The duration of the play was 72 Minutes.

Swar sangam -Swar sangam was another activity conducted by the “Indradhanu “-

The huge response and encouraging feedback from the participants has geared up the club and we are all set to conduct best of activities and help INDRADHANU be a great success. MITSOM Rangers Trek Tikona Gadh

Tikona is the dominant hill fort in Maval in western part of India. It is located near Kamshet around 50kms from Pune. The village nearest the fort is called Tikona- basement village. The 3500 ft high hill is pyramidal in shape and the name Tikona means "triangle". There were total of 50(32 girls + 18 Boys) MITSOMIANS and 5 NCC Trekking Experts. We boarded the 8:15am local train from Pune station and reached Kamshet railway station at 10am, followed by breakfast and tea. We hired Jeeps from Kamshet station via Kale colony (near Pawna dam) to Tikona basement village. Tikona is a pyramid shape fort near Pawna Dam, Lonavala. A Medium Level trek

needs around 2 hours to reach to the top as well as to descend. The views from the fort were extremely beautiful (one of the best lake views in sahyadris) as one can see the huge Pawna Lake in its full glory. Trekkers also praised the view of Pawna dam as well as the nearby Tung, Lohagad and Visapur forts.

It was a wonderful experience. All the trekkers were amazed by heavenly weather and scenery. The new trekking members were very happy and enjoyed a lifetime experience which was unprecendented for them.

Sports Club

‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy'

This proverb assumes great significance in the life of students given the pressure that they have to endure during their academic lives.

True to the meaning of the proverb, students at MIT School of Management had arranged sports day on March 09, 2013 under the guidance of respected Director, Brig. (Retd.) Dr.R.K.Bhatia and sports mentor Prof. Swapnil Undale.

The organizing team led by Aditya Pachpor and Sahil Janorikar displayed their management acumen by organizing the event which saw participation

from around 150 students from MBA, MCA, MMM, MPM courses.

Sports that were organized included- Cricket, Table Tennis, Football and Basketball. MBA juniors won Cricket and Basketball tournament whereas the Football tournament was won by MBA senior course students. The event also witnessed participation from women in Cricket.

As Michael Jordan has said “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships”.

Even though the main objective of "The Sports Day" was to organize a fun filled day for the students, but it also inadvertently provided valuable learning like task allocation, team building, leadership and discipline. It provided a platform for the students to show their talent in sports.

The prize distribution ceremony was arranged on March 14, 2013 to felicitate the winners in each sport. The winners were given medals and certificates by Director, Brig. (Retd.) Dr.R.K.Bhatia. A few of the students shared their experiences about the event. The umpires and referees were also felicitated for their great work that made the event memorable. As Heywood Broun says, “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.”
