May’s 90+ birthdays

Methodist Temple Friends,I want to thank you so much for the outpouring of love I received over the last several months. I was so pleased and happy to receive an Easter card from the pastors, communion delivered to me, flowers from the altar and cards from the UMW & Sunshine Table. It has all touched my heart.

~Nancy Chumbley

Thank You

New Lifeby Andy Payton

I enjoy the changing seasons. I may be weird, but I like the slow cooling of fall which leads into the prolonged chill of winter. I ap-preciate the new life of spring which leads into the warmth of summer. Underneath this rhythm of change there is an important lesson we all should embrace: death leads to new life. To say it another way, for every Good Friday, there is an Easter.

I admit this is a hard truth to embrace. Dying isn’t easy and birth is a challenging process. It’s hard to let go of those moments, experi-ences, and people which, for a time, were life-giving. Yet, the hard-cold truth is we must be willing to do this if we are ever going to experience the new life which is always com-ing into being and freely offered to us.

There is an ancient parable that illustrates this vividly. The story is told of a young ap-prentice who went to a master in search of spiritual truth. To prove himself, the young seeker started to tell the teacher all his ac-complishments – the books he had read, experiences he had had, and even the other great teachers he had sat under. As the young student continued, the old master gave the young man a cup and started to pour him a cup of hot tea. While the student kept talk-ing, the wise teacher kept pouring. Finally, the cup overflowed and burnt his hand. He exclaimed and asked why the teacher had let this happen, to which the old master ex-plained that to make room for the new, we must also let go of the old. The student’s problem was that his cup was too full.

I don’t know about you, but many times my problem is that my cup is often too full and even overflowing at times. The season of Easter, in many ways, is about responding to this issue. It is a time in which we have al-ready let go of the past in the season of Lent and are now open to the experience of new life. This is reflected in the flowers we put on the altar, the new paraments on the pulpit, and even in the songs we sing.

One simple way we can increase our capac-ity to experience the new life of Easter is, like the two Mary’s on Easter morning, seek to share good news. It starts with taking note of the good things that are happening within our lives, our church, and our world. Next, we seek to share the good news of these experi-ences with others. Finally, as we do this our capacity to experience these gifts actually be-gins to increase. It is biologically proven that by sharing our good news with others, out ap-preciation for life also increases. This Easter Season, my hope and prayer is that our joy might be complete as we seek to celebrate all the gifts of new life God is giving us.

The Methodist Temple Board of Trustees would like to inform the congregation of a couple of exciting sights we plan to see in the next couple of months.

First, in honor of Ray and Mae Arensman, and courtesy of a generous donation, we plan to have the rose window lighted soon. [The rose window is the large circular window on the south wall of the Sanctuary above the organ.] Once this project is completed, the rose win-dow will become a spectacular sight during a sunny day and will serve as a true testament to the faith of the Arensmans.

Second, once the rose window project is completed, we will no longer use the screen that currently hides the window. We would like to install two wide screen televisions on both sides of the sanctuary [in front of the speakers that are currently installed]. These television screens will provide clearer images and, in the long run, be less expensive than the current projector / screen combination. Also, the expense for the screens will be cov-ered by a donation.

Finally, we would like to see these projects completed this summer. If you have questions about these projects, or any other Trustees issues, please contact Eric Eades (Trustees Chairperson).

From the oFFice...We wanted to make you aware that we’ve had some changes to our administrative staff over the last couple of months.

* Kim Cullison resigned from the Finance Office.

* Ryan Mickens resigned as the Director of Com-munications.

We wish Kim and Ryan well in their future endeav-ors! Resumes and applications are currently being accepted to fill the Communications position. In the meantime, Wendy Moore and Jenny Farthing are taking care of the important communication pieces, such as bulletins and newsletters. We ap-preciate your patience and understanding as we fill the position and acclimate our new employee when the time comes.

“During this 2017 Annual Conference we will gather and declare ‘Together: We Are More!’ Let us remember that we are more capable of being faithful as Matthew 25 Christians: feeding the hun-gry, welcoming the stranger, tending to the over-looked, and more capable of bringing people to Christ, while we bring the love of Christ to people.”

I n this article called “Meet Our Team,” we feature a different staff member each month, so you can get to know the folks

who work hard behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly! This month, we’ll meet one of our newer employees, Cathy Witte, our Director of Children’s Ministries.

What are your areas of responsibility? “I’ve been serving as the Director of Children’s Ministries at Methodist Temple for a year now. My biggest responsibility is organizing Sunday programming for Children’s Church

and Sunday School. I organize all the volunteers who teach each Sunday and make sure they have all their materials ready to go. I also coordinate any event at church that involves children, such as Vacatin Bible School, Open Com-munity and Summer Camps.”

Who makes up your family? “I have been married to my husband, Steve, for 36 years. We have one daughter, Lind-say, who is 25 and is currently living in Atlanta, GA.”

What do you like to do when you’re not working? “When I have free time, I love to cook, go to the movies, and go on get-away weekend trips with my best friends.”

What do you like best about working at Methodist Temple? “What I love best about working at Methodist Temple are the people. The office staff is so much fun to work with and they are so supportive of each other. Also, after teaching for 30 years, I can get coffee whenever I want and make color copies, too!”

If you could have a meal with anyone (living or dead), who would it be and why? “I would love to have dinner with my mom. She’s been gone for over 20 years and was my closest friend. I would love to have one more meal and catch her up on what she’s missed in our family.”

What is your favorite verse of Scripture? “Philippians 4:13 - I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.”

Stay tuned next month to meet another member of our team!
