What is a digipak

A Digipak style packaging normally the CD singles or special editions of CD albums. Digipaks typically consist of a gatefold (book-style)paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside the generic "digipack" came to be used to describe all soft CD packaging.

Josh RecordJoshua Peter Record born on 20th November 1987 is a British singer/songwriter who has released one album, Pillars, and one EP.

His album “Pillars” doesn’t seem to have any kind of digipak but a music CD cover. However from what can be seen it is a simple photo of the artist with a range of different effects placed upon it such as:-

• Fading• A increase of transparency (white )• A kind of wave of green and yellow.• A reddish, purple colour used on his neck

Although this isn’t a bad CD cover, it isn’t the kind of cd cover that I would personally do, for example I don’t think I would make white a dominant colour on my cover.

Childish Gambino “Because the Internet” is the second album by hip hop artist Donald Glover, under the stage name Childish Gambino. The album was released on December 10, 2013 by Glass note Records and Island Records. The recording process began in 2012 and ended in October 2013.

The cover is an animated .GIF of Glover staring at the viewer, which quickly fuzzes out after a few seconds (with strong brush-like strokes blurring his features to the point where he is unrecognizable) as if it had jumped at the viewer, in a process similar to zooming in. The .GIF format is a reference to the Internet, which made it popular and frequent. The physical version of the album functions with lenticular printing to mimic the animation effect.

GorillazGorillaz are an English virtual band created in 1998 by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett. The band consists of four animated members: 2D (lead vocals, keyboard), Murdoc Niccals (bass guitar), Noodle (guitar, keyboard, and backing vocals) and Russel Hobbs (drums and percussion). These members are completely fictional and are not personas of any "real life" musicians involved in the project.

The cover is drawn, which has no similarity to Josh Record’s album cover pillars besides the use of a side close up shot of each band member. What I like about this CD ad is the way it shows the characters in the band, for example it has them all with frowns on their faces showing the seriousness of the band. Which is interesting as the band’s songs aren’t all depressing songs.

MF Doom• Daniel Dumile born 9 January 1971 is

a British hip hop recording artist best known for his "super villain" stage persona and unique lyrics. Daniel Dumile has taken on several stage names in his career, most notably as Metal Face DOOM or MF DOOM.

• This album cover is another one which is drawn, it is a re design of the original cover which has the artist MF Doom. The cover shows a influence to sliver age comics which is unique especially since this genre of rap doesn’t really mention or appeal to the typical comic reader.

Music website research

Josh recordJosh Record has a very interesting website, in the fact that it lacks any real features on the site, for example, the only thing that is accessible is just social networks such as :-

• Facebook • YouTube • Twitter • Sound cloud • Spotify

The site does have the unique font for his name however not for much else and since this is the only page whether he is using constant colours is not clear.

Max frostMax Frost is a producer and songwriter of indie rock and pop music from Austin, Texas, signed to Atlantic Records. Max frost’s website from the looks of things has a very good site as it is loaded with tons of content from things like:-

• Tours• Music videos• Photos• Store

As well as all of his social networks where he can be found unlike Josh Record using also snapchat and Instagram.

Max Frost makes his website have a constant colour coding of black, white and grey. Having it remain that way as well as the unique font for his name at the homepage as well as for other parts of the site.

Black Sabbath

Unlike the other artists I have looked at they are quite new and don’t have a lot of history, however Black Sabbath being well known for an number of years use this to their advantage even on websites. Using old pictures of when the band was younger to give a retro vibe or nostalgic feel to the site.

Also having social networks and other parts of the site which use animation to look interactive through things like pictures of the old times in the band, a scroll to the left and right of the site and interactive buttons.

Black Sabbath also use the typical colours associated with the band which is black and purple used throughout the site.

Cee Lo GreenThomas DeCarlo Callaway born in 30 May 1974 better known as Cee Lo Green is an American singer, rapper, songwriter, record producer and actor.

Similar to all the other websites I have seen this one too has the use of a social network and has all of their icons on show, but unlike the other sites Cee lo’s shows updates similar to a blog about what has been up to and what is to come such as tours and performances he has done.

Music CD album poster

Page 13: Magazine digipak advertisements

Josh Record Josh didn’t really have a poster since he wasn’t advertised as much as say someone like Katy Perry or others whom I have looked at however I did find his tour poster. Which had the distinct font of his name which can be found on his site and a use of colours such as Black, white and grey.

It also has the top of a build, likely assonated with the name of his tour, the house tour.

Kasabian Kasabian are an English rock band formed in Leicester in 1997. The band's original members consisted of vocalist Tom Meighan, guitarist and vocalist Sergio Pizzorno, guitarist Chris Karloff, and bassist Chris Edwards. The band's line-up was completed by drummer Ian Matthews in 2004 after a string of session drummers.

The thing I like about this poster is that its simple, something that I would like to do with my own poster which is have a website named after the band, as well as naming a few songs. But also keep a gothic and dark tone.

Arctic Monkeys - AMAM is the fifth album by the English indie rock band Arctic Monkeys. The album was released in September 2013 through Domino recording company. The album received critical acclaim from music critics and featured in many end of year lists as one of the best of 2013. It was nominated for the 2013 Mercury Prize for best album, hailed the Best Album of 2013 by NME magazine, and featured at number 449 on NME's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Commercially, AM has become one of Arctic Monkeys' most successful albums to date, topping charts in several countries, and reaching top ten positions in many more.

The waveform depicted is characteristic of an am. What I like about this album poster is that everything in it is linked from the symbol to the name of that band and even the name of the album. Its something I would like to include in my own poster.

Justin Jones Fading Light is the album creased by Justin Jones and released nationally on May 8, 2012. Jones describes it as “some of the most intense, emotional, and personal work I’ve done to date.” The title track is about his grandmother, her aging, and the pain of the inevitable loss of loved ones. The term “fading light” refers to an experience he had when he was a child walking with her on a gravel road.

Fading Light has been received with positive reviews. Catherine P. Lewis of the Washington Post writes, “Jones’ greatest asset is the worldliness of his voice” and that Jones, “understands the importance of the spaces between notes to create poignant moments.”

What I like about the poster, is just the simple image on the poster of the skull as well as the connection of the flicker effect that is on the poster like an old film.
