ESTIVALSCOTTDALE F Welcome to the 2019 Scottdale Fall Festival. The Scottdale Fall Festival has been around for 45
years. Although the festival has had many names over the last 45 years, the principles have never changed. The festival has always been a community event in Scottdale. The idea started with Scottdale’s 100th-anniversary celebration. A group of local citizens created the celebration for the 100 year anniversary of the town. This group of people then decided to have an annual event called the Scottdale Coke Heritage Festival. The year was 1974 when the fi rst event was held. The festival would change names several times over the decades until its present-day name, Scottdale Fall Festival, which has remained for the past 22 years. This is one of many events that the citizens of Scottdale can enjoy throughout the year. This festival was created by the community of Scottdale, for the community of Scottdale. Over the last 45 years, the festival has attracted people of all ages and helps promote local businesses in our community. This three-day celebration has many events such as a dog show, live entertainment, a race, ethnic foods, children’s area, and much more. A list of events, food, and entertainment can be found on pages 4-10 and the festival menu can be found on page 11. The Scottdale Fall Festival committee thanks you for attending and making this event bigger and better each year! The 2019 Scottdale Fall Festival Theme will be “All Roads Lead to Scottdale.”

The Bricks‘The Bricks’ is actually the fourth iteration of ‘3 Bricks Shy’. Individually we have both been performing since the late 70’s as solo artists in various duo, trio, and band configurations. It wasn’t until 1999 that 3 Bricks Shy was launched, and it wasn’t until Sam joined the band in 2000 things started to take off. 3 Bricks Shy, which included Tim, Sam, and bassist Randy Miller, gained popularity as a result of the song selection, solid instrumental work, and really sweet three part harmony vocals. We had the pleasure and privilege of opening for local recording artists The Poverty Neck Hillbillies, and National acts such as The Marshall Tucker Band and Dave Mason. We also shared the stage with Pure Prairie League and Hootie and the Blow Fish. We performed all around the Laurel Highlands/Westmoreland County area until December 2007. In early 2008, Sam and Tim decided to try it as audio, and so far, so good. “We are having a hell of a good time carrying on the tradition of classic acoustic music and promoting the consumption of alcohol. Team Drink!!!”
Aubrey BurchellAubrey is 18 years old from Irwin, Pennsylvania and her interests are in Singing, Art, Poetry, and Drama. Her vocal influences are Adele, Fiona Apple, Amy Winehouse, Otis Redding and many more. Aubrey was in the top 70 contestants on American Idol during the first season on ABC in 2018. Aubrey loves to entertain and is currently involved in singing engagements at wineries, festivals and bars performing 3hr sets. She also performs for charity events such as Clean Water Kenya, Jamie’s Dream Team, and Relay for Life. She has had vocal appearances on 100.7 Star on the Bubba show as well as Y108 on Broadway’s Backyard. Aubrey was voted Best of the Burgh 2019 in Pittsburgh Magazine.
Stage Right Will be performing a Broadway medley featuring songs from our upcoming Season which will include Little Mermaid, Newsies, Cabaret, etc. Founded in 1998 with just 12 students, Stage Right! currently has an enrollment that averages 200+ students year-round. The school is based on the tenet that professional artists, instructing, mentoring, and working alongside student actors profoundly affect their development. Our students are taught by professionals and then are given the opportunity to work with them on stage. This synergy creates highly successful graduates. Our students range from 4 years to 18. They provide the musical theatre component in selected elementary and high schools, staffed by professional actors who can teach full time. The project involves developing a curriculum to fit Propel’s needs and Stage Right’s! resources. They then adapt what we consider our product to an inter-city school system.

This recipe of rock and funk is baked to perfection to satisfy your musical appetite. Let’s start with the “Funk Fathers”, a rock solid rhythm section that makes up the foundation of this delicious cake, add to the recipe a 3-piece horn section called the “Heaven’s Gate Horns” to fi ll up the layers, and fi nally, the icing on the cake, not 1 but 4 talented vocalists that will get you out of your seats and heading up to the dance fl oor, for a heapin’, helpin’ of rock and soul goodness. So if you want a deliciously good time with zero calories, come out to see Street Level and get served!
The 80’s & 90’s Band The 80’s & 90’s Band knows how to get a crowd going by keeping everyone on the dance fl oor singing all night long. You will know that the energy is real because the musicians pride themselves on

For over fi fteen years, JJF has entertained thousands - young and old alike - performing at top music venues across Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and Ohio. With always musically faithful renditions of the Stones’ prolifi c catalog spanning fi ve decades. JJF delivers the raw power, energy, and fun of the World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band. Rain Drops Perspective Join Annie Quinn, Executive Director of the Jacobs Creek Watershed Association for a tour of the town from a Rain Drops perspective. How has Scottdale Borough worked hard to address fl ooding. Learn about the “beloved” bump-outs and their real purpose! Learn about porous concrete, silva cells, bioswales, and more! It might surprise you to learn that Scottdale Borough is one of the greenest boroughs in PA! People travel from all over to see these engineering devices. The watershed knows that not everyone in town feels the same and if you have strong opinions about the Bump-outs, now is your chance to learn all about them. The downtown change in 2015 was a big adjustment and the watershed is ready to have a conversation directly with the community about the changes and why they were important. They have a purpose and each year we get better at keeping them beautiful. Join us to learn and walk!

This BIGFOOT chassis is the newest member of the Team BIGFOOT fleet. It was completed on December 24, 2014 and did its first live event in Southaven, MS (Memphis, TN) on January 9th and 10th, 2015, winning a race and freestyle that very first weekend out with legendary driver Dan Runte behind the wheel and even winning the Toughest Monster Truck Tour Championship that first year (and again the next year). It employs many of the features that made the earlier BIGFOOT #18 successful, with some tweaks and improvements. It has a low center of gravity chassis, long-travel shocks, and an even longer wheelbase than the earlier BIGFOOT trucks. This BIGFOOT also utilizes “zoomie” headers, giving it a very loud and unique sound as compared to other BIGFOOT trucks. Veteran driver Larry Swim won the 4-Wheel Jamboree Series in 2016 and the Toughest Monster Truck Tour in 2018 in this truck. They are currently touring the U.S

Scottdale Public Library “The heart of the community” is a phrase we have often heard when de-scribing the much loved, Scottdale Public Library. Through the last twenty-three years the library has seen many changes under the leadership of library direc-tor Patricia Miller. Miller has seen the library evolve into more of a community center and service center in the last few years. Our Pre-school programming under the leadership of Mrs. Rhonda Allison, who has constructed a weekly event based on Pennsylvania early learning standards, has been a draw to both those in the community and visitors from outside our service area. The addition of Kristin Smith to the staff brought renewed social media and web based focus to the library with daily posts and up to the minute information. Smith’s Great Scottdale Read Program, based on the PBS’ Great American Read, brought the resources of WQED to Scott-dale communities. We reached a zenith point in 2018 when we were the fi rst library in Westmoreland County to receive Gold Star Library status by the state and in 2019 when the library was named an Inquire Within Library by WQED, bringing amazing resources to area children. We believe our seeking out partners to aid our efforts is key to our success and much gratitude goes out to the Scottdale Borough Council, East Huntingdon Supervisors, WQED, Mid Penn Bank, our Southmore-land Teaching faculty and administration, Private Industry Council and so many more. While much focus is targeted toward our youngest patrons, we have in the last two years brought unparalleled resources to our adult community. Twice weekly we have GED classes in our community room in partnership with the Washington and Westmoreland intermediate Units. Once a week we host a representa-tive from State Representative Ryan Warner’s offi ce to bring hands on help to our citizens with a multitude of issues. New Robotics clubs, sewing classes, chess classes are available as well as writing and reading clubs for Middle School students. Adults enjoy knitting, book clubs, computer classes, and educational as well as entertaining programming. There is literally something for everyone at the Scottdale Public Library. Our staff is top notch and our board of trustees is led by president Clyde Stoner who is a hands on leader. We hope when Scottdale, East Huntingdon, Everson and Upper Tyrone count their blessings, they count the li-brary as one of them.

Scottdale Historical Society All roads lead to Scottdale, and under some of those roads lie old trolley tracks. Between 1891 and
1952, Scottdale passengers could catch a ride on the streetcar and get off all over southwestern Pennsylvania. They made commutes affordable and simple, and helped to connect rural communities throughout the region. The circa 1900 image below shows a trolley at the intersection of Pittsburgh St. and Broadway St.. Hopping on a streetcar was much more convenient than the other means of transportation also depicted below: horse and carriage. It was also cheaper and more effi cient for short trips than a steam locomotive. The biggest and most memorable streetcar company in the region was West Penn Railways. The company was chartered in 1904 and at its peak contained 339 miles of track. West Penn serviced transportation to not just Scottdale but also McKeesport, Latrobe, and Trafford through Greensburg, Mount Pleasant, and Connellsville, on to Uniontown, Fairchild, Martin, and Brownsville. Because the streetcars required power, residents along the trolley tracks were able to tap into the lines and enjoy electricity for the fi rst time. West Penn saw this as a business opportunity and marketed the access to their power. Before long, electricity overtook trolleys in revenue, perhaps an early sign of the end. As cars became increasingly common in the 1900s, fewer people used the trolley service. By the 1920s, state and federal government programs were building thousands of miles of new roads every year. Although the streetcars’ days seemed to be numbered, they proved invaluable during the Great Depression and World War II. Public transportation relieved the burdens of car maintenance and fuel, making the blow of the Depression just a bit easier on Scottdale. During WWII, the trolleys helped to conserve critical wartime goods like rubber, steel, and gasoline, and made the necessary rationing of those goods easier to bear. Following the war, an economic boom allowed consumers to buy new cars and governments to build new roads. After 60 years, the day fi nally came. The local trolley ran its last run on August 9, 1952. To see the differences between 1900 and today, stand across Broadway from Carson’s Premier Catering, and look north. The Broadway bank on the right in the photo has been replaced by the PNC drive through. And where the Scottdale House hotel once stood on the left, you will fi nd Standard Bank. And in the center, Broadway St., a Scottdale road once traveled by trolley.
We invite you to share your memories of Scottdale and time spent traveling via trolley with us at [email protected].
We also encourage you to become involved the Scottdale Historical Society and other community organizations so that we can preserve our history and grow our future. For more information about the

Geyer Theatre History The Geyer Performing Arts Center was originally built in 1900 and operated by Andrew Geyer as the
Geyer Opera House. In 1912 the building was sold and renamed The Scottdale Theatre. In the early years, the main entertainments produced were minstrels, operettas, and vaudeville acts. A 1926 major reorganization changed the focus from live performances to movies. The new marquee read “The Strand” and John Bixler was appointed as manager of the movie house. Our theatre was one of the first in the area to be equipped with a Vitaphone system for the new talking pictures of the era. In 1942 Mr. Bixler became the owner of the theatre and continued to show movies until 1969.The Lights were turned off in 1971 and the building sat dark and quiet for over 16 years. Then in April of 1987 a group of citizens formed The Scottdale Showtime Inc., purchased the building, and began renovations. In 1988 the Actors and Artists of Fayette County produced the first show, Man of La Mancha. In 2005, Showtime reorganized and drew upon its history for a new name – The Geyer Performing Arts Center. The Geyer Performing Arts Center, a 501c3 non-profit charitable organization & an EITC eligible charity, remains the owner of this building, which is a tangible like to the area’s prosperous past.
