There, minutes earlier, a terrorist went on a rampage, stabbing anyone in his vicinity and leaving a trail of carnage in his wake. “It was chaos, absolute chaos,” she said. Anwar Srkaoi, another MDA volunteer, arrived within minutes of being dis- patched to the Jaffa clock tower, slip- ping through Tel Aviv’s notorious rush hour traffic on his well-equipped Emergency Medicycle. The Jaffa attack killed one man and injured ten others. There were similar, albeit less deadly attacks that day in Jerusalem and Petah Tikvah, a stark reminder that no place in Israel is im- mune from violence in the current cli- mate. These attacks are part of the wave of stabbings, car-rammings and shootings that have plagued Israelis since September 2015, killing more than 40 people and injuring 500. While thwarting all these attacks is nearly impossible, responding to them is not. MDA, having developed world- renowned expertise in mass casualty responses, has saved hundreds of lives. It has done this by embracing efficient and tech-savvy innovations. In an effort to “see” the scene of an emergency and dispatch the most ap- propriate vehicles and personnel, MDA has up-graded its smart phone app in order to provide a live video feed from the scene, adding another capability to what is already the most sophisticated phone app for summo- ning EMS help. Users can mobilize MDA paramedics with one touch and enable dispat- chers to see their exact location and the scene so that critical medical de- cisions can be made even as the pa- ramedics are being dispatched. “The app allows callers to obtain im- mediate help and provides dispat- chers with critical information,” said Eli Bin, MDA Director General. “It is all about providing a better and faster response and ensuring that we have the best equipment and the best-qua- lified medics for a particular injury or ailment. Once they arrive, their training is what ultimately saves a per- son’s life.” MDA is constantly refining and improving its training and protocols, making it a sought after authority in the medical community, frequently training other Red Cross societies and first responders from around the world. Emergency medical techni- cians who responded to the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 cited their training with Magen David Adom a year earlier as instrumental in their ra- pid response. MDA’s cutting-edge training continues to save lives with its Life Guardian Program. This adds another layer of responders by training and/or recer- tifying everyday Israeli citizens in CPR. Depending on their location, these Life Guardians receive notifications of an emergency on their mobile app and can rush to administer CPR or first aid until an MDA ambulance or medicycle arrives. Donor support is critical because MDA does not receive Israeli govern- ment funding. Yoni Yagodovsky, MDA’s Director of International Affairs, commented, “As Israel’s only national emergency response organization, it is our responsibility to provide Israelis with the best, most professional treat- ment possible, and we can’t offer that without the support from donors.” In this era of unpredictable and unprovoked attacks, the unique com- bination of innovatin, MDA training, and donor support is helping to keep Israelis alive. Holiday greetings from Michael I. Levine, National President

Passover is a celebration of freedom from slavery and the rebirthof a Nation, over three thousand years ago. Our festivities takeplace during this time of year when the earth awakens and lifeemerges into full bloom. This celebration of life is apropos to theTalmudic principle;" Whoever saves a single life is as though hesaved the whole world”.

Magen David Adom was founded on this principle and, 40 years ago, CanadianMagen David Adom became the sole authorized fundraising organization inCanada, dedicated to supporting the lifesaving efforts of MDA in the State of Israel.

As Israel’s official national rescue and blood services organization, MDA providesemergency medical services and blood services, as well as humanitarian aid to othercountries in times of crisis. Every day, thousands of paramedics, medics and volunteerswork together to provide medical care to the people of Israel. This requires a vastamount of resources, vehicles, equipment and supplies. Emergency vehicles mustbe maintained, medical equipment and supplies need to be replenished.

Our organization directly and actively saves lives and mitigates the suffering ofhuman beings affected by violence and the human condition.

All of MDA's equipment, medical and blood products are supplied solely by theDiaspora, us! That is why MDA cannot exist without us.

Israel cannot survive without Magen David Adom.

Michael I. Levine, National President

In honour of the 90th Birthday of Mark Bernstein, the Zita and MarkBernstein Family Foundation hasdonated an ambulance and a scooter to Magen David Adom. This generous gift was made inmemory of Sara Bernstein, Mark’smother, who was the first NationalChair of Magen David Adom inCanada under the Hadassah-WIZO umbrella.

“I come from a very strong Zionistfamily,” said Mark. “For as long asI can remember, my mother wasactive with Hadassah-WIZO. What

I was not aware of until she passedaway in 1986 was that she was also involved with MagenDavid Adom.

Asked why he chose to donate anambulance and a scooter, he said,“because I can and I felt the needto do it. The survival of Israel is deeply engrained in me… MagenDavid Adom is an organization thatsaves lives.”

“Learning of my mother’s involve-ment gave me the push to makethis donation in her memory…It isa gift to the people of Israel andthe State of Israel. The survival ofIsrael and its people is a very im-portant part of my life.”

A group of 25 physicians fromCanada and France recently spenta week in Israel taking part in theMDA "International Unit" - AdvanceCourse. They attended lectures, courses and participated in traumaclasses, Mobile Intensive Care Unit(MICU) shifts, and extreme drillsthroughout the south of Israel.

Leader of the Canadian group wasDaniel Amzallag, CMDA’s NationalMedia and Volunteer Coordinatorand himself a trained MDA Para-medic.

The course commenced with aconference at the Jerusalem Sta-tion, “MDA and Emergency Med-ical Innovations”, and included top-ics on technological dispatch, instruction methods, how to utilizevolunteers and medical innova-tions. An emotional personal storywas shared by Michael Kosovskiwho was saved TWICE by thesame Paramedic, Israel Wein-garten. Michael sustained a car-diac arrest while playing baseballand, thanks to the MDA dispatcherwho was able to instruct by-standers to perform CPR until theMDA team arrived, he survived.

Two years later, while in the gym,Michael went into yet another car-diac arrest and as fate would haveit, the SAME paramedic was on calland saved his life again!

A Challenging Medical Champion-ship was set up that included tendifferent medical emergency sce-narios specifically arranged for thephysicians. They dealt with awoman giving birth, a child suffer-ing from heat stroke, a penetratingwound, even a tiger bite and more. This Championship could not havebeen the success it was without

the cooperation and assistance ofour friends from MDA Negev Re-gion, MDA’s Paramedic School,Canadian Magen David Adom’srepresentatives as well as our"Maguen David Adom France" rep-resentative, Victor Wintz.

Time was also built into the pro-gram to allow for a climb upMasada and an emotional cere-mony at the top of Masada in Eng-lish, French and Hebrew with thepicturesque sunrise in the back-ground.

One event that was definitely notbuilt into the program was an ac-tual encounter with two severe caraccidents on the way back toJerusalem from Masada. Thephysicians were able to put theirskills to work when they treatedfour people – two with life-threat-ening injuries, one with moderateinjuries and one with mild injuries.

Are you a Physician or know one?Want to join our Team and be partof an unforgettable experience? The Third Basic Course of the International Unit will take placeNovember 16th to 26th, 2017. Forfurther information and to register, please contact Daniel Amzallag [email protected].
