With the summer season in full swing Natalie & I are super busy performing 7 days a week. We are working resorts, county fairs, company picnics, family reunions, school shows, graduation parties and library shows all over. This means all work and almost no play, but Natalie & I love our job and even though we are working around the clock right now and miss out on all the fun summer activities like cook outs and get togethers with friends and family we are so thankful to be doing what we love for a living. We have lots of shows on the books this month. Natalie & I first met Aldo a few years back at Magic Whirl (A small magic convention) in Northern Va. Then again the next year at my local magic club while he was lecturing on magic. He was very funny and had lots of great ideas on magic. Aldo and his wife Rachel split the lecture bill at the lecture I most recently saw. He would do a trick then teach it then she would do a trick and teach it. The lecture was very good and they were both very good at teach-ing magic and breaking down the effects where even the newest student of magic in the room could keep up with them. If you ever get a chance to see Aldo perform you need to check him out, He is very funny and just as talented. He also has several videos on youtube.com just search Aldo Colombini.

As I was doing research for this article I found out that Aldo’s wife Rachel is in a bind and is reaching out to the magic community for help. It seems that she needs a heart valve replaced and the procedure and expenses could exceed $200,000.00. She has had this condition since she was a kid but it has now be-come a major concern. In this month’s video I decided to show a quick card trick in front of a live audience to show the reactions close up magic can get. This video was filmed in May 2010 at an after prom party. This is one of my favorite close up card tricks right now. This trick is fun to perf orm because it can be done as a gambling demonstration or as a straight magic trick. After a domestic dispute which led to a gun being discharged in the home of Jonathan & Charlotte Pendragon, Jonathan spent some time in jail and the couple are now seperated and are perform-ing separately. Jonathan is not allowed within a certain distance from Charlotte and in a recent interview Johathan said that can be difficult sine the magic community is so small. Charlotte was scheduled to perform at a magic convention and although I have not heard any reviews of her on her own I am told she is very smart, knows a lot of magic, and if anyone can pull it off it would be her. Jonathan is also working on a solo show where he will be mixing the TV character Monk with a mentalist. It sounds interesting, I guess we will have to wait and see how it turns out.

The last week in May on the David Letterman show featured some of today’s top close up magicians. Each night that week a different magician performed a routine. The line up included : Michael Ammar, Steve Cohen, Johnny “ACE” Palmer, John Carney, & Jason Randal. You can search youtube.com to see perform-ances from all these performers. It is so cool that David Letterman would showcase magic like this, especially since Jay Leno is known for not liking magic. A few years ago you were not a big name in magic unless you did an appearance on the Johnny Car-son show, now I guess it is the Letterman show. David Letterman and Craig Ferguson both have a magic week with magi-cians stopping by and performing illusions or a signature trick but this is the first I have heard of a close up magic week. Thanks David for keeping magic alive in Late Night!


Natalie & I perform at several Relay for life events each and every year and they run the gambit from our big Illusion shows to just having us come out and perform for the kids. This year The Relay for Life from Culpeper, Va hired us to perform at the survivor’s dinner and we had a blast. There was probably 300 people at the banquet and there was no stage. I performed my adult stand up show in the corner of the cafeteria and everyone enjoyed it, the show was so much fun. After the show was over we spent another 15—20 minutes meeting a large portion of the audience who all wanted to come up and tell us how much fun they had. We did several comedy routines and by the end of the show adults were volunteering each other to help. Here are a few pictures from that event:

Graduation Parties

Performing for Libraries

Natalie & I were hired to perform at UVA’s graduati on ceremony after a banquet event at the business school. This show was for the families of the graduates. This show was a lot of fun!

We were also hired by several families to perform at a high school graduation party. I only performed close up magic at this event.


Libraries all over hire us to perform magic and help promote their summer reading programs. We work libraries all over Virginia, from Alexandria to Norfolk. We really enjoy these shows because it is a real change of pace for us. Some libraries use us as a reward for the children who have completed their reading quota and some Libraries use us to help advertise the program itself to boost the numbers of children who sign up. Some libraries have us perform at schools, parks and recs, or even at the libraries themselves. We are also scheduled at several libraries this summer to teach our magic classes to anyone who wants to attend. These shows and classes are open to the public and are abso-lutely free. Effect: The magician has 2 spectators choose a card and put the cards back into the pack. The magician then looks through the pack and figures out which cards were chosen. Supplies: all you need is a regular deck of cards. Secret: The deck is split in half; all the red cards are on top and all the black cards are on the bottom of the deck. The first spectator will choose a card from the top of the pack and the other spectator will choose a card from the bottom of the pack the second card is placed back somewhere near the top of the pack and the first card is put back somewhere near the bottom. Now all the magician has to do is look for the cards that are out of place. Tip: As the magician you need to make it look natural and make them feel they have a free choice on where to put the card all the while making them put the card where you want it.
