Welcome to our favourite time of year! The Jeep Magic Millions January Sales and Carnival on the Gold Coast.

This year sees the Jeep Magic Millions Carnival get bigger and better with the introduction of the Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo – kicking off tomorrow at Doug Jennings Park at The Spit from 11:30am.

For us, Magic Millions is the perfect platform to attract national and international visitors to the Gold Coast as both a travel and trade destination.

The Polo is the perfect fit for the week long Jeep Magic Millions Carnival. Our week of equine sport and entertainment now begins and ends at a flat gallop.

The Jeep Magic Millions Raceday and the Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo are both fast-paced live sporting events; elite athletes competing in unison with the horse.

We spend most of our time holding our

breath – watching the best jockeys and polo players in the world compete at full pace.

We look forward to seeing you over the course of the week – whether it is at the Polo, watching the horses run on Surfers Paradise beach for Barrier Draw, checking out more than 1000 yearlings at our sales complex at Bundall, or trackside next Saturday at the Gold Coast Turf Club for the Jeep Magic Millions Raceday.

Take your pick – there is something for everyone. We love every minute of the week ahead so we will be there to welcome you.

Thank you so much for being a part of the Carnival.

LET’S CELEBRATE

Not so long ago the Jeep Magic Millions Carnival simply consisted of a raceday and horse sale but now it’s a week-long event that is renowned as

one of Australia’s greatest racing carnivals. We caught up with Magic Millions co-owner Katie Page-Harvey to talk all things Magic Millions and share the secrets of her success with husband Gerry Harvey.

Firstly Katie, you’re the CEO of Harvey Norman with more than 200 stories in eight countries, how do you fit organising a $10 million racing carnival into your schedule?Harvey Norman has grown organically in eight countries from 1982 and we’ve got great teams around us. At the end of the day, when you’ve been doing it for a long time you make sure you’re organised. With the Magic Millions, we’ve had that business now for over 20 years and it’s the same thing – it’s not about Gerry and I, it’s about the teams we have in place.

But seriously you two must make an almighty team?People say to us how do you do it, you are working together and married and this is 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We are not sure how it works either because we have horrific blues and they’re famous. We are hardest on each other but somehow we can do what a lot of people can’t, which is respect each other’s opinions even when it gets a bit heated and then still go home and have a glass of wine together.

Any famous blues you wish to share? There is no specific one. We take each other to task all the time and we are so hard on each other. We’ve been doing this together since 1983 so we are going into our 34th year of working together and living together, so I think we have got it down pat now.

Who wins, you or Gerry?Gerry will tell everyone I win all the time but I have to dispute that. He tells everyone he just gives in which he does not do and he fights to the end. I wish it was that simple.

What’s Gerry like behind the scenes?Everyone loves my husband. What you see is what you get. He is a genuine, good hard-working Australian. He is a great business person, great people person and he is one of those people the media can go to and he will talk to them without fear. You have to

remember he is 77, he plays A-grade tennis three times a week, he fits in golf when he can and mentally he is as sharp as ever.

The Magic Millions Racing Women’s Bonus was launched in 2013 and sees the first four all-female owned horse across the line in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic each year share in a $500,000 bonus. Has this concept turned out the way you expected? It has exceeded my expectations by so far it doesn’t matter. By that I mean it has happened so quickly and when you do something like that it generally takes time to grow. But it took off from year one and just shows you there were so many women out there who wanted to be involved in racing as far as breeding or choosing the horse, choosing the trainer and just running the whole process. I think incorrectly it appeared as if it was a more male sport than it really is. What I am doing with things like Racing Women is to get that balance back because the women are there and want to do this and you just need to open that door.

The inaugural Magic Millions Polo Tournament will take place at the carnival this year, tell me about this new concept? That’s another really exciting event. About three years ago I started to talk to Rob Archibald, who is Francesca Cumani’s husband and Rob as you know has played at the highest level in polo globally for a long time. I said I want to do something with polo because a lot

It’s not about Gerry and I, it’s about the

teams we have in place.

of the families have interests in racing and the synergy is really good and it is authentic. I just know this will work really well on the Gold Coast and it will add enormously to the carnival. Rob helped me put it together and for our first year we will cap it about 2500 people because I want to make sure it is fantastic. I want to grow it to be one of the best polo tournaments in the world.

You have introduced the Barrier Draw on the beach, the Magic Millions Racing Women’s Bonus, Australia’s first $10 million raceday and a polo tournament. What’s next for the Magic Millions carnival?Every year people say what are you going to do next. This year the big thing is the polo, last year it was the $10 million raceday and before that it was all the women trouncing the guys in the 2YO race. We always manage to do something different each year but you will have to give me a month or so to work on the next thing!

I want it to grow to be one of the best polo tournaments in the world.

The 2017 Carnival will include the addition of the Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo Tournament, which will be held on Sunday January 8, 2017. There will be two games, the first including the World Cup Polo team, and the second will include the Magic Millions ambassadors alongside an international line up of polo players.

Joining the ambassador team will be: Team Manager Zara Phillips, MBE Patron

of MMRW; Francesca Cumani, International

Racing Commentator and Jeep MagicMillions Spokesperson;

Alejandro Novillo Astrada, Magic Millions Polo Representative;

Rob Archibald, Magic Millions Polo Representative;

Jack Archibald (brother of Rob) a world-class player;

Michelle Payne, Melbourne Cup-winning jockey.

The surf, punting and horse sales … it’s an enticing trifecta for a horse racing enthusiast who loves having a bet and riding a long board.

A few years ago, Katie Page-Harvey invited me to work alongside her across the Jeep Magic Millions Carnival. It’s fair to say it was a very quick response from me. And it’s been a lot of fun since.

Before getting involved, I naively thought that the Magic Millions was a raceday with a Yearling Sales attached – or vice versa. I wasn’t really sure which. Either way, I was wrong. Each year, Magic Millions grows in some way, and every year the activities of the week-long Carnival exceed my expectations.

I am a betting man, I always have been. So with the addition of the Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo this year, I challenge anyone who will let me put my money on this year’s Magic Millions being the most fun yet. Let me know, as I’d like to have a wager!

Katie had an idea over the winter that the Jeep Magic Millions Carnival should be launched with a polo game featuring some of the world’s best players. So, after finding an area by the water that could be turned into a polo field, it is happening!

Katie and Zara Phillips MBE, Patron of Magic Millions Racing Women, announced the addition of the Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo while they were in Paris this year. Katie chose The City of Lights for the announcement because it was playing host to the Longines Global Champions Tour, the world’s premier five-star show jumping event, with equine lovers from all over the world gathered there.

The inaugural polo game will be played on Sunday January 8, and will see Argentina’s top players Alejandro Novillo Astrada and his brother Ignacio Novillo Astrada, flown in for the event where they’ll compete against some of our best home-grown talent. It is fair to say Katie thinks big!

The Polo is the perfect example of how the team at Magic Millions come up with a brilliant idea, and then bring it to life. The whole Carnival is like that – it is a week-long flurry of well executed, magical concepts!

As a result, the Magic Millions has become a world-class carnival that will this year launch with Pacific Fair Polo on Sunday, continue to hold the now-iconic Magic Millions Barrier

Draw on the Surfers Paradise foreshore on Tuesday morning, stage a $10 million raceday on the Saturday, and through it all, run a Yearling Sale that will see $130 odd million dollars of horse flesh traded. If you haven’t watched the theatre of the auction, you should – just be careful to keep your hands down!

Katie and her husband Gerry (arguably the owner of the driest sense of humour on the planet) are constantly working on promoting Magic Millions on an international scale. They have developed a great team around them, and they keep trying to raise the bar every year. As a result, Magic Millions is now considered a leader in the equine and thoroughbred industry.

I was with Katie in 2015 when she took a contingent of guests to Keeneland, Kentucky, to the largest thoroughbred auction in the world. I was surprised to learn how many of America’s racing royalty were planning to travel to the Magic Millions to purchase thoroughbreds to

race back in the USA. Magic Millions has also made headlines

thanks to Katie’s passionate work for women in the industry. This year marks the fifth year of her initiative Magic Millions Racing Women, which rewards horses in the 2YO scamper who are owned or leased entirely by women. Since its inception, registrations of female-owned horses have increased by about 60 per cent.

If you haven’t been to Magic Millions before, we would love to see you at one of the week’s events – trust me, you’ll have fun. If you have been before and you’re returning, welcome back and we hope you have as much fun as we do!

and linen with simple extras like a straw hat to keep the sun out.

The Women in Racing lunch allows the chance to explore the more feminine side of race wear in lady like silhouettes and refined accessories.

Whichever event you attend – or if you attend them all – conduct a quick review of dress codes.

Simple rules like checking on skirt hems (it’s best to stay just above knee-length at the absolute shortest), staying away from traditionally autumn-appropriate felt for headpieces and sticking to one trend at a time to keep things on track.

Follow these rules and you’ll be set for a photo finish.

The arrival of the New Year on the Gold Coast heralds not only a fresh start, but the beginning of one of the most anticipated events on the

Australian racing calendar. As the Jeep Magic Millions Carnival takes

place there are a series of events that attract a crop of racing and fashion followers alike and offer the chance to get dressed up – one of our favourite things at Vogue, and we rarely need an excuse.

To compete in the style stakes a look to the newest, albeit race-appropriate, trends is required.

Raceday offers the chance to experiment with fashion – where you can have half the fun before you take your place trackside at one of the Carnival’s many events.

We’ve seen a resurgence of trends like ruffles and lace, while pleats and perennial favourite, florals, still have a place in our racing wardrobes.

The newest offering of headpieces – from elegant crowns and pearl headbands, to cleverly cut out leather pieces – all feel fresh for an event held in the height of summer.

The stars came out on the Gold Coast and shone brightly on and off the field during the long days of summer, 2016. Strapless dresses, and linen and lace all proved popular among the punters and party-goers as champagne was sipped and conversations shared.

MY ULTIMATE TIP IS

TO KEEP YOUR ENTIRE

LOOK IN THE SAME

COLOUR THEME. SO IF

YOU HAVE A SIMPLE

BLUE SUIT, TEAM IT

WITH A BLUE TIE.

Two things I love in this world are Australia in summer, and racing carnivals. With the Jeep Magic Millions Carnival becoming such a huge attraction on the

Gold Coast in January, I’m now blessed with being able to enjoy those two things at the same time. Being in high-summer and in a northern state, the carnival requires a little bit more thought and fun when it comes to your wardrobe choices – and I’m here to help.

Now, if you decide to go for a whole week, there are plenty of opportunities to show your stylish side and impress the crowds. New to the Carnival is the Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo on January 8. Stylishly, the Polo is a more relaxed affair and you can really have some fun with your look. Go preppy rather than suited up for the Polo and take cues from American heritage brands such as Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Gant. Essential to this look is a light-weight sports jacket and polo teamed with coloured chinos or shorts. Suede loafers or simple leather trainers, aviator sunglasses and a pocket square will set you apart on the field. I don’t have the head to look great in a hat, but one is a must on ‘the Goldie’. If you’re like me, slip-slop-slap as there’s nothing worse than a face that matches your red chinos at the end of the day.

On January 11, the Magic Millions Sparkling Ladies & Gents Luncheon is the place to be seen and do so by looking the goods. For this, I’d be inspired by scenes from Out of Africa or The Talented Mr Ripley on the Italian Riviera (hey, it’s the Gold Coast, think big). Linen suits are a bit of a rage at the moment and have the perfect weight and breathability for the heat of high summer. Brands such as Hugo Boss and MJ Bale have a great selection in Myer stores now. Go for beige, cream or even white if you’re feeling brave. I’d team this with

a brown leather or suede monk strap shoe or loafer and matching belt to add some serious class to your look. For something different, try an olive linen shirt. Add a spotted olive pocket square and Matt Damon and Jude Law will have no chance.

Then comes the Jeep Magic Millions Raceday on January 14 and it’s time to bring out all your sartorial might. They say the devil is in the detail and that’s the key to raceday dressing. You can turn any of your everyday suits into a winning look with this advice – keep your entire look in the same colour theme.

So, if you have a simple blue suit, team it with a blue tie, pocket-square, straw hat with blue trim and blue socks. Your shirt can be blue too (or white if you’re after a crisper look.) You then have the option to be as outrageous as you want with the patterns in your outfit – checked shirt, striped tie, spotted pocket square – believe me, it will work and will match your personality be it understated or over the top. Same goes as above for a grey suit, beige suit or even a green suit. If only I had a tip that was foolproof on the tote.

Enjoy the carnival.

RACEWEAR DO’S Express your sense of racing style – focus

on the appropriateness of the outfit for the raceday and the individual;

Demonstrate you understand fashion trends;

Display attention to detail with accessories and millinery;

Focus on your personal presentation – superior grooming and deportment are essential with any great outfit;

Consider the suitability and appropriateness of the outfit for the climate.

MYER RACEWEAR FASHION GUIDELINES

RACEWEAR DON’TS Don’t wear new shoes – ensure they have

been worn in; Don’t wear an outfit that is too revealing.

Remember the races are about elegance and sophistication;

Don’t wear millinery so over the top it gets in the way of the other patrons. Pointy and oversized millinery can take out an eye when you’re standing in a queue;

Don’t forget to be aware of the racing club’s dress regulations – be sure to review before planning your raceday outfit.

Mackay-born Jodi Anasta knows how to dress for a Queensland summer – and the style standard won’t be slipping on her watch. The Myer ambassador and

actress is the glamorous guest judge for Fashions on the Field.

“Magic Millions is definitely more relaxed, but that doesn’t mean you can get away with mini skirts and spaghetti-strap tops. When you go to the races it’s about honouring tradition – that elegant dress code.”

This will be Anasta’s second appearance at Magic Millions. “It’s always so nice to be home and I love seeing how Queenslanders embrace fashion with so much personality and colour.”

While Anasta says it’s worth doing some research into how different fabrics handle the heat, she’s

tipping all trends bright and beautiful. “Florals, jumpsuits, off-the-shoulder tops, feminine ruffles and shades of blue are all really stunning for summer. I’m obsessed with Alex Perry, By Johnny, Asilio, Cue, Aje and Talulah are all really good for racewear too. I think crowns are a cool addition to an outfit, or try a leather headpiece or big beautiful hat. It’s a balancing act.”

It’ll take originality and personality to grab this judge’s attention. “It’s not about wearing the most expensive dress, but about having your own thing going on,” Anasta says.

When it comes to her own wardrobe, the Logie-winning actress is surprisingly low-maintenance, but has one non-negotiable pre-race ritual: coffee.

“My outfit will be all planned, so I just chill out and get ready for a big day. I can’t wait.”

ANYONE CAN BECOME A PART OWNER IN A RACEHORSE. AND IT’S EASIER THAN YOU THINK

atmosphere of the sales and see a great array of Australia’s top young horses. And, if you are really interested you could buy one, or at least a share in one of the potential champions of the future.

The great Winx – which has amassed a staggering $9 million in prizemoney – was bought for just $230,000 from the sales in 2013. Not a bad return for its owners.

While not all horses are like that, Vin Cox, Managing Director of Magic Millions, said if you enjoy racing the thrill of owning a horse makes the race meetings even more fun.

“You may meet up with other owners and there are privileges on raceday,” Cox says. “You can meet the jockey and meet the trainer.”

And anyone can become involved.“A lot of people aren’t sure of where to go

and what to look for but the first step is to come to the Magic Millions office. We can show you the horses and then it’s a matter of being introduced to the bloodstock agents and trainers,” says Cox.

You don’t need to buy a whole horse, you can be part of a syndicate, like Cox’s wife who took a $5000 stake in Global Glamour at the 2015 Yearling Sales.

The horse, owned by a group of 40 women, has won $648,500 in prizemoney and is a hot favourite for this year’s Carnival.

“It’s a fun thing to do and it’s very social,” Cox says.

“A lot of syndicates will get together and have a dinner to decide the name of the horse,

The 2017 Jeep Magic Millions Carnival, Raceday and Yearling Sale features 10 days of fun, excitement and horse powered action on and off the track.

For first time visitors and those completely new to racing and breeding, Magic Millions offers a dazzling entry into a unique world populated with fascinating characters from all walks of life.

The sport of kings may be dominated by the wealthy and famous but you don’t need to have a fortune or be a trackside identity to own a racehorse.

The Magic Millions Yearling Sales have the glamour that comes with being part of this great carnival but is open to everyone.

That means you can come and soak up the

its colours and who will be the trainer and things like that.”

A good trainer will charge between $35,000 and $50,000 a year to keep and train a horse.

And a horse could cost anywhere from $10,000 to $1.5 million.

“Agents and trainers will put people together in syndicates,” he says. “Someone might want to put $10,000 on a horse and someone else may want to put $5000 on a horse and they’ll piece it together.”

Once you start, it is a steep learning curve but it is also rewarding, even if you don’t manage to buy a champion.

“When you buy a horse there is a lot of emotion, angst and a lot of decisions to make – it’s like taking your kid through school to the HSC,” says Cox. “You put a lot of time and effort into it and you go along for the ride.”

The first raceday is like the first day of exams, but once you get there it is a great feeling.

Only Magic Millions horses can enter the carnival so purchasing a yearling at the sales provides access to one of the richest racedays in the racing calendar.

“It’s richer than the Melbourne Cup and you have the right to race on the day whether you have two-year-old, three year-old, gelding, mare, whatever.”

The best thoroughbreds in the country inspire us mere mortals to dream big and for the uninitiated we’ve put together a beginner’s guide with all you need to know to pass muster at Australia’s premier equine event.

Pictured above: Winx with Ben Cadden. Left: Vin Cox and the Yearling sale.

Auction is how these horses are sold. Raise your hand, place your bid. Highest bid wins.

Bid Spotter. He’s the guy or gal taking your bid. It can be fast and furious, so commit to the cause and stick with your choice, but if you meet your match and come up short, do not despair – horses are like taxis, there is always another one coming.

Colts are young male thorough breds from the age of foaling until they turn four and become known as stallions or entires. If you buy one of these, chances are you will soon need to know about gelding, so see G.

Dam is the mother of a horse and ‘sire’ is the father. In theory a mix of these two is what should be in the resulting yearling. It would be nice to think that two plus two equals four, but in thoroughbreds that’s not always the case.

E xperts abound at yearling sales and everyone has an opinion. Bloodstock agents from all over the world converge with the common goal of finding the fast horses. Some appear to be better at it than others!

Fastnet Rock, Redoute’s Choice, Snitzel, Not a Single Doubt, More Than Ready (USA), I Am Invincible, Sebring, Choisir, Lonhro, Written Tycoon, Hinchinbrook, Exceed and Excel … these are all outstanding sires whose progeny will be on offer.

Gelding can be a noun or a verb in the horse world. The unruly colt is frequently gelded (castrated) and goes forward as a ‘gelding’, quite often to better racing success than he would have achieved as a mischievous colt. Kingston Town famously ran an appalling last on debut as a colt before being gelded and going on to become the best horse in the country.

Hot weather. Packing for a visit to the Gold Coast in January is easy, it’s always hot and humid. Bring your swimmers and a sun hat.

Insurance is something you will need if you buy a yearling. These are flighty young creatures not known for putting thought before action, so better to be safe than sorry.

Jeep are the current sponsors for Magic Millions which has become a global event taking in a stellar race day, a whirl of varied social engagements, an actual yearling sale and now in 2017 we can add world-class polo.

Kolivos – Greg and Donna have experienced one of the ultimate Magic Millions dreams as owners of Champion 2YO Colt Pierro, purchased for them for $230,000 at the 2011 Magic Millions by legendary trainer Gai Waterhouse. An unbeaten Golden Slipper and Triple Crown winner, Pierro retired with $4.5 million in earnings and was subsequently sold for a squillion to global breeding giant Coolmore with his first two year-olds racing this season.

Luck is needed at the Magic Millions barrier draw held on the beach in the heart of Surfers Paradise – this is where the surf quite literally meets the turf.

Magic Millions raceday at the Gold Coast is worth $10 million and features events for horses of all ages over all distances.

Nicks and clicks – a particular affinity between two sires - are something the pedigree gurus will be spruiking, so if you wish to sound knowledgeable throw in a positive comment on Fastnet Rock/Galileo/Redoute’s Choice/Last Tycoon or Choisir/Encosta de Lago and you too will sound like a pedigree expert.

Owning a racehorse can be a life changing experience akin to winning the lottery, but way more fun and with a far greater chance of actually winning. See K to see how it is done.

Pedigree page is what every yearling has and what you want to see there is the BIG BOLD BLACK TYPE, which denotes stakes-winners. These are the superior performers that come from the same family as this yearling.

Question, what is BOBS? BOBS and similar logos on the pedigree pages such as Super VOBIS and QTIS are incentive schemes that this yearling is eligible for. As an owner it means extra cash in your pocket when this horse starts winning!

Reserve price is what the vendor wants for his horse and passed in is what happens when the market thinks otherwise.

Scoping is a veterinary procedure your yearling will have done following his purchase to check his airways and make sure his breathing is all that it should be. If a horse can’t breathe, he won’t be running very far.

Trainer is the person you need to find after you have purchased a yearling. He or she is the one who is going to mould your baby into a racetrack star. There are so many good trainers in Australia you are spoiled for choice, but if you’ve bought a nice horse … chances are the trainer will find you!

Under-bidder. He’s the guy that missed out. Everybody that has ever attended a horse sale has an under-bidder story to tell. They either know one, were one or ultimately wish they had been one.

Vin Cox is the Managing Director at Magic Millions and while others create ‘Magic Millions the event’, Vin creates the actual yearling catalogue and it’s a cracker.

Winx is the best horse in the country – two Cox Plates and over $9 million in earnings – and she was bought right here on the Gold Coast in 2013 for $230,000.

X- rays are presented with each yearling to prove it does in fact have four good legs.

Yes is what you say when someone offers you a share in a yearling. You do not want to return here with a sorry tale of would’ve, could’ve, should’ve.

Z oustar has written a chapter of Magic Millions success, having been bought here as a yearling in 2012 for $140,000 before going on to win six of nine starts and $1.4 million with Group I wins.

Above from top: Mare and foal relaxing in the paddock; Trainer Gai Waterhouse celebrates another win by Global Glamour.

A horse can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $1.5 million.

FIVE TO WATCH

Well, we just don’t know how talented this Written Tycoon colt is but one thing for sure is his $67,500 price tag as a yearling was an absolute bargain. Winning Rupert showed what he was made of when he won a Group 2 race in Brisbane at two, but it wasn’t until he returned to the track this summer that he made everyone stand up and take note. Winning Rupert broke the Eagle Farm track record when he won the McInnes Wilson Lawyers Plate by 5 ¾ lengths. Interestingly, Winning Rupert’s sire Written Tycoon, standing at Woodside Park Stud in Victoria, is also the sire of Capitalist, who won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic-Golden Slipper double last year. Winning Rupert shot to the top of the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas market following that dominant first-up win at Eagle Farm and he will be a serious player in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas this year.

Trained by no other than the Queen of Magic Millions, Gai Waterhouse, Global Glamour is an absolute beauty and is the perfect example of the ‘magic’ that can come with buying a horse at the Magic Millions. Owned by 40 women from seven different countries, this large group has already been on the trip of a lifetime with the two-time Group 1 winning filly. Global Glamour won her first start over 1000m by a commanding 6 ¼ lengths last January. She went on to win the Group 1 Flight Stakes for three-year-old fillies over a mile at Randwick in September before claiming the Schweppes Thousand Guineas at Caulfield seven days later. She became the third filly since 1996 to complete the Flight Stakes-Thousand Guineas double and could yet provide her female owners with an even bigger pay day in the $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas.

The Magic Millions Yearling Sale and Raceday throws up some memorable stars every year — including Winx, this year’s Australian Racehorse of the Year. This year 2017 is no different. In fact, this year’s $10 million Jeep Magic Millions Raceday promises to be one of the best yet with the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas in particular shaping up to be a race to remember. Below we provide you a list of five horses that are all borne out of the Magic Millions Yearling Sale. All of these horses have made their owners very happy with the wins they’ve already claimed. These are the five beauties to keep an eye on at the Jeep Magic Millions Raceday.

BOOM TIME

The $1 million Magic Millions Trophy might not be the most prestigious race on the card but it’s still an exciting contest every year. One horse that is sure to be fancied in the race this year is Boom Time, a WA-bred horse who comes into the race with very good form. He kicked off his career in WA where he was a handy horse under Trevor Andrews before heading east to join the Hayes stable in Melbourne. He won over a mile at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day and then backed it up with another tough victory over 2040m at Moonee Valley. He is just a really honest horse and the new distance (2200m) of the Magic Millions Trophy in 2017 shouldn’t bother Boom Time at all. The Hayes stable also train Magic Millions 2YO Classic contender Madeenaty, so it could be a big carnival for David and Ben Hayes and their co-trainer Tom Dabernig.

Many believe the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas this year will be a match race between Winning Rupert and Global Glamour but you can’t rule out Speedeor. Trained by Victoria’s top trainer Darren Weir, Speedeor has built an imposing record, which includes victories at Flemington and in the Magic Millions 3YO and 4YO Classic at Ballarat in November. The good thing about this horse is he is versatile and can either come from off the speed with a strong finish or sit handy and still produce a good kick. He’s a progressive horse and one that can’t be underestimated even though he has a few very handy rivals to contend with at the Carnival this year. It also must be noted that the experience of Darren Weir counts for a lot. Weir produced Mahuta to win the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas last year, so he knows what it takes to win big in this race.

Madeenaty has been at the pointy end of the Magic Millions 2YO Classic market ever since her brilliant debut victory in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes at Flemington back in October. The speedy filly led all the way and coasted home to score by 2 ¼ lengths in slick time. She then went to Flemington again on Melbourne Cup Day where she was caught on the worst part of the track and finished third. Trainer David Hayes has always had a big rap on this filly and she is sure to have her admirers in the race this year. “We’ve got very high hopes. We really do like her,” Hayes said after Madeenaty’s Flemington debut, “And it’s good to see the expensive ones step out like that.” Victorian horses don’t have a great record in this race but this filly and her trainer have had their eyes on the Magic Millions prize for some time and may buck the trend in 2017.

There is something incredibly relaxed, refreshing and genuinely joyous about spending time at the Jeep Magic Millions Raceday.

The actual raceday, this year on Saturday January 14, became Australia’s first $10 million raceday in 2016, offering huge prizemoney on a nine race program with a staggering seven races worth $1 million or more.

Basically, every horse is a winner. With Australian racing, and the industries it supports

flourishing, the Gerry Harvey and Katie Page-Harvey-run event continues to go from strength-to-strength. And making the entire event even more equine this year, the Jeep Magic Millions Raceday crew has added a day of Polo onto the schedule with Pacific Fair hosting a day of chukkas on The Spit, the first ever on the Goldie. The Polo day will kick off on Sunday, January 8.

Dotted between the mega horse events is basically an entire week of fun and for some reason, I always end up coming home with a few new friends!

The Jeep Magic Millions Raceday has everything from high glamour and fashion to high stakes. Whether it’s attending to cheer a favourite horse or having a share in a runner on the day, not much compares with the experience.

The feeling is totally different to any other event on Australia’s racing calendar. Guess the fact the weather is a constant winner has something to do with that.

What started as a mega yearling sale event – hence the ‘Magic

Millions’ moniker – the entire week really has become a serious player on the country’s racing and social schedule. Having been a guest on the Goldie, I genuinely do love the whole vibe.

The fact it happens early January gives it a holiday kind of feel with people filling their day with all things equine.

Last year, I helped judge the Myer Fashions on the Field (how lucky to land judging the boys, hey!) and I loved it.

And when it comes to fashion, for us girls, it’s absolutely cool to throw on some bling, indulge in a spray tan, walk in those serious heels, go for bright colours and lots of hair. Oh, and don’t forget a hat!

There is so no argy-bargy during the Jeep Magic Millions Raceday fashion stakes but just a really calm approach to what has become one of the most popular parts of the Carnival. that’s how it rolls.

But hold on, have I mentioned the super-duper, simply exquisite Magic Millions VIP Marquee yet? I have never seen a marquee groaning with so much chilled Moët & Chandon served in huge gold goblets, together with mountains of prawns and a superb lunch buffet that looks like something from a grand movie set.

This year’s Magic Millions ambassadors are the simply sensational and always approachable Zara Phillips MBE (equine queen and granddaughter of the Queen, no less), her husband, former English rugby captain Mike Tindall, sports broadcaster Hamish McLachlan, racing commentator Francesca Cumani and her polo guru husband, Rob Archibald and newswoman Amanda Abate.

I can’t wait to get up there ... all in the name of work, of course!

BROADBEACH

Broadbeach’s best eats aren’t always where you’d expect – for proof, pop in to Pacific Fair Shopping Centre. The new resort area includes some excellent restaurants, among them the easy, breezy Rivea. Savour Italian classics in a chic semi-alfresco setting.

Jupiters Gold Coast is home to more of the suburb’s savoury stars, including Garden Kitchen & Bar, a foliage-filled, light-flooded space that sprawls out to a sundrenched deck and manicured lawns. Seasonal produce and herbs hand-picked from an on-site garden fuel the modern Australian menu. Fans of Japanese fare shouldn’t miss Kiyomi and the signature Goma Street dessert with tempered dark chocolate and black sesame ice cream.

Head into Broadbeach’s heart to be really spoilt for choice: Bistro Franc and the adjoining Franc’s Deli & Wine ooze Parisian style, The Loose Moose brings on the burgers in a heady prohibition-inspired atmosphere, while Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill seduces serious steak lovers with their wagyu rump roast. the pick of Broadbeach’s brunch bunch. The wildflowers on the tables are almost as pretty as the signature breakfast panna cotta. Orlando Bloom loved the breakfast salad so much he asked the chef for the recipe. Grab one of Elk’s strong, reliable brews over ice or splash out on a summer shake – the beach is only a short stroll away if you fancy a change of scenery.

I’m looking forward to being part of the Barrier Draw this year. The Draw is one of the single most important factors for trainers and owners ahead of the Raceday that weekend, and Magic Millions has created a fun event that is pretty spectacular. I’m an early riser, even when I don’t need to be up at the crack of dawn for track work, so I love the Gold Coast café culture. It’s really casual, friendly and the locals always seem to start the day early. No Name Lane on Broadbeach does great coffee.

MAIN BEACH & SURFERS PARADISE

There’s been a changing of the culinary guard in the Gold Coast’s traditional dining hub of Tedder Avenue, making way for a new, more casual crew. The bright breakfasts and nourishing smoothies at Local & Co. will set you up for the day.

But some things never change and champagne tastes are still well and truly indulged at Marina Mirage. The rich and the famous gravitate to Ristorante Fellini, which has been serving up its equally famous pasta for 20 years. There’s a luxe private dining room, but every table is treated to priceless views of the superyacht-crowded marina and waterfront sunsets.

Vanitas at the neighbouring Palazzo Versace offers one of the Coast’s few bona fide fine-dining experiences to match their wine treasure trove.

Surfers Paradise has its share of spots to splash out at too. Settle in at Seaduction on The Esplanade and survey the action between the red-and-yellow flags while talented chef James Fiske creates his impossibly intricate courses.

Also check out The 4217 for popular eateries Brooklyn Depot and Salt Meats Cheese (ask for The Black Lobster). Caffeine connoisseurs

will want to get better acquainted with the handsome Italian that lives at Paradox Coffee Roasters – a shiny red Brambati roaster. If you’re looking for something different, they make their own bottled cold-brew spliced with Nutella and salted caramel.

I’ve been fortunate enough to attend Jeep Magic Millions Carnival in the Gold Coast for a few years now, and I’m really looking forward to returning in January. There is something really genuine about the Gold Coast, the people are friendly and down to earth, and not to mention the fact we will be playing polo by the ocean, which always makes for a great combo. The Gold Coast is starting to become a hub for emerging bars and restaurants. One of my favourite cuisines is seafood, and I can’t wait to sample some of the freshest seafood at Citrique in Surfers Paradise.

You can also enjoy that blue view over the road at The Fish House, a seafood specialist that offers switched-on service and a sommelier. The menu changes at the whim of suppliers, but whole fish is a sure bet. Wait staff parade a selection through the restaurant and, after guests have chosen their favourite fish, the chefs work their magic. Think Cairns tropical coral trout steamed with ginger and shallots, or John Dory from New South Wales in a caramelised onion and white wine braise.

Maybe you’re in the mood for a pizza party? Justin Lane Establishment operates on the mantra “eat, drink and be messy”. While its pasta bar and dining rooms are great for groups, the rooftop bar with its built-in misting system is hot summer property. Grab a coconut colada or Aperol spritz, order big on the share plates and let the good times roll.

A couple of doors down, Jimmy Wah’s

promises to transport your tastebuds to the backroads of Vietnam with vibrant dishes spiked with lemongrass, chilli and lime. With people-watching potential from its stool-lined windows, it features a flashback of a soundtrack inspired by the ’80s hit movie Good Morning, Vietnam.

James Street is the centre of the suburb’s cafe culture. While away the hours on Finders Keepers’ comfy Chesterfield. Alex Zabotto-Bentley designed the French bistro-style interior, which is full of cool blues and lots of light from a big bay window. The theme of sharing and socialising extends to the food, with shareable signatures such as Middle Eastern lamb.

The Gold Coast has really grown into a foodie mecca. Miami Marketta delivers a diverse range of food and live music. We have Rick Shores in Burleigh Heads, while Hellenika in nobby is a favourite of mine for its Greek-inspired menu. Mick Fanning’s Balter HQ is great for a drink on the weekend. There is also Fellini and Fish House, both have delicious menus matched with an incredible view. For those who haven’t explored the all new Pacific Fair Shopping Centre in Broadbeach, it’s the perfect place to find outfits for the Magic Millions.

PALM BEACHIt’s a bit of a dark horse, but foodies are flocking to the once-sleepy southern suburb following a smorgasbord of openings. While it retains its easy, unaffected charm from bygone beach days, Palm Beach now claims some serious culinary cred.

If you’re all about atmosphere, join the cool kids on the breezy balcony at 8th Ave Terrace, a multi-level, Hamptons-inspired haven. With its strip-of-blue ocean view and relaxed tunes, it’s the perfect perch for sipping a local brew or Amaretto sour. Venture upstairs to sample the full menu. The light, golden sesame batter will give you a renewed appreciation for humble fish and chips, or try the slow-rendered duck breast with pomegranate salad.

Balboa Italian Restaurant is another recent addition to Palm Beach, housed in a beautiful red-brick building that matches the rustic mood of the menu – picture gorgeous old hardwood floors, a two metre chandelier, opera-worthy mezzanine level and ambient lighting. The hand-made pizzas are the obvious crowd pleaser, or sample chestnut gnocchi with ricotta and black truffle.

Make the most of blue summer skies at Wildernis, where a honeycomb sun roof floods the room with light. They grow their own lemons, limes and herbs in the indoor/outdoor garden space to use with locally sourced ingredients in a menu that bridges breakfast,

lunch and dinner. Tapas takes over after sunset, with the beer, beats and good vibes flowing.

If your appetite is more adventurous, make a beeline for Bstow – this after-dark venue is one for the real foodies. From fermentation to foraging, the effort that goes into every share plate belies the modest pricing.

Not sure what you feel like? Hedge your bets and head to The Collective, an alfresco playground for the palate inspired by Spanish food markets. With full table service, diners can choose from five permanent kitchens that cover everything from Asian fusion to all-American burgers and wings.

Named for the mysterious savoury sensation, Umami serves up chilli crab, miso and gyoza, with lots of wok cooking to keep indulgence on the healthy side. Make sure you

catch the spectacular hinterland sunsets over cocktails on the rooftop bar.

The Gold Coast locals are some of the friendliest people I’ve met. On my previous visits they have always welcomed Zara and me. We love Australia and feel right at home when we’re here for Magic Millions – and the weather doesn’t hurt. I’ve been to the sales before and always love getting back to them. Magic Millions has a reputation for having world-class horses. I’m sure I’ll be wanting to make a bid this year – although I know I’m not really allowed to! I also enjoy a hit of golf, so I’m hoping to get out to one of the Gold Coast golf courses if I can.
