The Magnificat High School Archives exists to procure, evaluate, preserve and provide access to materials of enduring historical value to Magnificat High School, thereby enriching scholarship about and appreciation

for the school heritage and the living endowment provided by the Sisters of the Humility of Mary.

April Spotlight – Spring Sports

At Magnificat High School, the spring sports program includes track and field, softball, and lacrosse; many students participate with enthusiasm, energy, and skill. Their reward has sometimes been a state title, but it has always been an opportunity to nurture friendships, encourage teammates, and promote team spirit. As Miss Gloria Polzer, softball coach in 1982, stated, “An athlete must be able to accept defeat and victory graciously. She must learn to play fairly and honestly at all times. She must also learn to play as a team member – to show cooperation!” (The Magnificat, June 4,1982 “Sports Develop Character,” page 6)

The May 30, 1980 edition of The Magnificat gives an example of the team spirit exhibited by the softball team. “Softball Team Slides into Victory,” page 4 “Short center Colleen O’Brien commented at a recent game against Holy Name, ‘Our success was due to our team unity and enthusiasm and willingness to work as a team to win.’”

Track and field teammates also exhibit team spirit as shown in the May, 1989 edition of The Blue Print. “Varsity and Junior Varsity Streaks explode out of starts for record winning times in track and field,” page 6 “The team spirit is something we have a lot of. Our senior co-captains this year (Jill D’Amico, Moe Whitford, and Debbie Flaherty) are great motivators, and they always put some humor and fun into everything we do.”

The June 1, 1959 edition of Magnificat shows that there was a lot of interest in the Cleveland Indians that year, especially in one player, Jimmy Piersall.

“Baseball, Babies and Sardines Provide Challenging Schedule for Jimmy Piersall,” page 4

“Jimmy Piersall, centerfielder traded to the Cleveland Indians from the Boston Red Sox this season, was adopted as Magnificat’s favorite ball player by faculty and students when he visited the school Friday, May 1.”
