Message from the Headmaster

As the seventh Headmaster of Mount Albert Grammar School I am delighted to present the Prospectus of the MAGS Foundation.

After nearly 100 years of serving the families of our local community and beyond, Mount Albert Grammar School enjoys an enviable position as a premier school on the national educational landscape. There exists a real pride in the breadth of achievement of our young people. The outstanding academic success of our students extends far beyond schools of a similar type. Furthermore, our school is recognised as the premier sporting school in New Zealand with no fewer than 16 national titles gained in recent years across a diversity of codes. Strong performing arts and service programmes complement the educational experience – it’s a great time to be a MAGS student!

Fundamental to this success is the daily emphasis on values expressed through the MAGS Way. Students have a genuine respect for each other and for the historical legacy they build on each day at school. Our young people understand that they stand on the shoulders of the many Albertians who have gone before them – that they are part of something unique and honourable.

Mount Albert Grammar School enjoys a strong partnership with its alumni and wider community. I am grateful for the work of the MAGS Foundation in drawing together this network of support with the intention of providing resources critical to the success of current and future students of our school.

The MAGS Foundation is the result of remarkable foresight by previous members of the Old Boys’ Association, now the Albertians Association. In 1972, when the School reached the age of 50 years, the Association formed the Mount Albert Grammar School Golden Jubilee Trust. In 2009, the name of the Trust was changed to the Mount Albert Grammar School Foundation and, in mid-2013, the Foundation employed Tim Kay as Director of Advancement, its first full-time employee. I have been Chairman since early 2015.

Under Tim Kay’s directorship, the Foundation has established itself as critical to the future of the School. As explained in this Prospectus, significant funds are being raised for special purposes and also for the general purpose of establishing a substantial endowment fund for the School.

Also, the Foundation has been delegated by the School Board to work with ASB Bank to develop and manage a substantial upgrade of the School farm, now named the ASB Bank MAGS Farm. Included will be the addition of an Experience Centre designed both to provide for the School’s curriculum and also to permit the agricultural and horticultural industries to display their technology and create greater urban awareness of career opportunities in their sectors.

More recently, in anticipation of the School’s centenary in 2022, the Foundation launched an ambitious project to expand, enhance and modernise the FW Gamble Memorial Hall. The School will be provided with a modern and versatile Centennial Centre that will be remarkable for its strong heritage quality.

Most importantly of all, however, the Foundation under Tim Kay’s directorship is working hard to create an enduring culture of philanthropy among Albertians, the School itself and the wider School community. As a State school, our funding is inevitably constrained. To continue to be successful and compete with both private schools and other State schools, MAGS needs greatly increased financial support from its entire community.

So there is much ahead. Because the projects upon which the Foundation has embarked will be of obvious long-term benefit to the School, investing now in the Foundation in the ways set out in this Prospectus will truly be to invest in the future of our School and to propel it into its second century assured of building upon the success of the first.

The aspirations of past MAGS students have shaped our history and today our students aspire to shape our future. A central focus for me is to build a fully integrated, world-class fundraising and advancement programme. This programme will enable the Foundation, in an increasingly competitive fundraising environment, to raise the funds necessary for the development of the School’s facilities, the growth of its scholarship programmes for both staff and students, and the general advancement of the School.

MAGS Foundation GovernanceIn 1972, when the School reached the age of 50 years, the then Mount Albert Grammar School Old Boys Association formed the Mount Albert Grammar School Golden Jubilee Trust with objectives that included “the advancement of the School, its teachers, pupils and old boys … as well as to provide for the School buildings, amenities, materials and equipment”.

In 2009, the name of the Trust was changed to the Mount Albert Grammar School Foundation. In mid-2013, the Foundation employed Tim Kay as Director of Advancement, its first full-time employee, and, in late 2015, Lorraine Robinson as his assistant.

Originally registered under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957, the Foundation is now registered as a Charitable Trust under the Charities Act 2005 with Charities Commission number CC 46943.

MAGS Foundation Projects• Establishment and management of a $10 million Endowment Fund. The income from the

capital fund is to be applied to the benefit of MAGS

• Raise funds for and manage the construction of the Centennial Centre for the MAGS centenary in 2022. The project involves the expansion, enhancement and modernisation of the FW Gamble Memorial Hall so as to create a modern function centre with a capacity of over 1600, in a manner which preserves its heritage features, including all of its Honours Boards.

• Raise funds for, upgrade and operate the ASB Bank MAGS Farm. The Foundation, pursuant to delegated authority from the MAGS Board of Trustees and a Charter of objectives, is working closely with ASB Bank and other major industry stakeholders to upgrade and expand the agricultural and horticultural facilities of the farm. A technologically current Experience Centre including new teaching facilities is to be built to serve increasing numbers of Agri-Business students at MAGS and also students visiting from other schools. Industry participants will support the farm with funding and product for display for both students and industry customers. The overall aim is to increase the awareness among urban students of the range and quality of opportunities in the agricultural and horticultural sectors.

MAGS Foundation Trust FundsThe following Trust Funds have been established to support the development of the School and our students in the future:

General FundThe General Fund comprises gifts to the Foundation that do not have any specific purpose and can be used by the Foundation at its discretion. The General Fund supports the $10 million Endowment Fund, the Centennial Centre project and the ASB Bank MAGS Farm project.

Special Purpose FundsThe Special Purpose Funds contain gifts to the Foundation for specific ongoing purposes. They are generally managed so as to preserve the capital and spend only the income on the specific purpose of the fund.

The following Special Purpose Funds have been established and are managed by the Foundation:

Vivian Family Cricket Endowment FundTo support the development and growth of cricket at Mount Albert Grammar School.

Bryan Williams Rugby Endowment FundTo keep MAGS at the forefront of Auckland Secondary Schools First XV Rugby.

Greg Moyle Art Scholarship FundTo support the development of the Visual Arts Programme at MAGS.

Academic Endowment FundTo deliver excellence in education by both attracting and retaining high quality teaching staff at MAGS.

Kerry Ashby Rowing Endowment FundTo assist MAGS students who have the ability but not the funds to take up rowing.

MAGS Foundation Investment PolicyThe Policy developed by the Foundation’s investment committee is:

• Keep a cash float to meet working capital and scholarship needs

• Set aside funds for specific scholarships

• Invest the balance in a balanced portfolio according to specific target asset allocations, reviewed regularly

• Use reputable independent financial advisors to recommend specific investments

The MAGS Foundation is registered with the Charities Commission, CC 46943. All donations are fully tax deductible as a result and the MAGS Foundation is also GST registered.

Donations can be made to the MAGS Foundation as follows:

PledgesDonations may be pledged to the MAGS Foundation once a year for a period of time, ideally five years maximum, so as to enable the donor to spread the total donation to suit cash flow.

Cash DonationsOne off cash donations may better suit a donor.

Advertising, Sponsorship and Naming RightsAdvertising opportunities for businesses and individuals are available in The Lion, the MAGS magazine published twice annually and distributed throughout the wider MAGS community.

A range of sponsorship opportunities is also available to enable sponsors to create mutually beneficial partnerships with MAGS.

A number of significant naming rights opportunities are available.

Goods or ServicesWhile money donations are the most useful for the MAGS Foundation, donations of goods or services may also be of benefit.

Bequests A special way to invest in the MAGS Foundation is by making a bequest. Any cash or other assets may be left in your Will to the MAGS Foundation, including a specified share of an estate, a specific amount of money and items of personal property or real estate.

Upon making a bequest to the MAGS Foundation the donor will be honoured by becoming a member of “The Augusta Society”, which is the means by which donors by bequest will be recognised and thanked during their lifetime.

Bequests are particularly suitable for the Endowment Fund project.
