Good afternoon, and welcome toWalton Lane for today’s SouthernCombination Football League Division Twofixture against Roffey. We extend a warm welcome to the visitingplayers, officials and supporters who havemade the journey from the Horsham areafor today’s game, and also welcometoday’s match referee, Paul Barratt, fromMidhurst.Three League games remain for Andy andthe boys – today could be the day that allour season efforts come to fruition tobecome SCFL Division Two champions - butwe’ll need to chalk up a win, and look forour neighbours, Sidlesham, to getsomething from their visit to second-placedJarvis Brook. We’re well aware of Roffey’s strengths inthis our third meeting of the season – witha 2-1 Sussex FA Intermediate Cup semi-final defeat followed up by a 0-0 draw lasttime out in the League, and expect today tobe another difficult fixture. Our last two games we’ve played without arecognised goalkeeper, with centre-halfCallum Fewell stepping in and keepingclean sheets against Montpelier Villa andRoffey – also testament to the back four hehas in front of him.Callum’s now on holiday in Australia andwill be a miss in the final run-in, howeverwe have regular shot-stopper, KieranMagee back between the sticks today andhave the presence of Nick Edgington in thesquad who can marshall the back, as he didso well at Roffey.Roffey are one of the form sides in theLeague with three wins and three draws
from their last six, however they have atorturous April to complete their campaign, with eight league games to squeeze in aftertoday, and that Intermediate Cup finalagainst Cowfold on Tuesday night atLancing, a run-in which will surely test theresolve of Tim Penlington’s squad. Our final home outing of the season is onBank Holiday Monday, April 17, with a localderby against Sidlesham (11am) – pleasemark your diaries if you are about over theEaster period, and hopefully making it anoccasion to celebrate. There are an additional run of reservegames on the remaining Saturday’s in April(all 3pm’s) – Frank Antony’s side without agame today, but chalked up their firstvictory of a challenging WyvernCombination season with a thumping 7-2scoreline against Alresford Town here, lastweekend.Rick Kennett’s u16’s also just need to wintheir final home game against lowlyBarnham Trojans Reds on April 23 (10.30amk.o) to secure the Arun & Chichester ‘C’Division title – all support welcomed, andhopefully more to celebrate come the finalwhistle. Great to see likes of Tommy Venessand Harry Spicer already stepping up intothe reserves.END OF SEASON PRESENTATION - TICKETSTickets for our end of season presentationare now on sale at the bar – this is amandatory event for all players, both seniorand youth – who are also encouraged toinvite friends and family to the evening, taking place at Southbourne Club on May20 (7-11pm). Tickets are £5 for a single, or£10 for a family (two adults, two children). There will be a special guest presenter onthe night, which the club are currentlyfinalising, alongside bar, buffet and raffle.Remember the clubhouse bar is openserving hot and cold refreshments, withscores on the TV! Enjoy the game and thankyou for your support.Front cover: Artwork by Ant Scott, photoby Simon Roe Photography

Bosham boss Andy Probee is calling on thelocal community to get behind the club as theyclose in on the SCFL Division Two title. The Robins need a return of four points fromtheir remaining three fixtures to guarantee thehonour – with Probee keen to see a healthycrowd at Walton Lane as his side face back-to-back home games against Roffey thisafternoon, followed by a big local derby againstrivals, Sidlesham, on Easter Monday, April 17(11am k.o). A trip to Cowfold concludes theircampaign on April 22.Bosham will also finish top of the pile shouldthey beat Roffey, and Jarvis Brook fail to win athome to Sidlesham in a battle between secondand third. The player/ manager, said: “We’ve had a greatseason so far, but Roffey and Sidlesham will betwo really testing games for us – seeing somemore local support could really help lift us overthe line.“Since Neil (Redman) any myself took over,we’ve been successful in winning the DivisionTwo Cup twice, but this year the League hasbeen our primary objective, so to win thatwould really be the icing on the cake.“The last couple of games have beenchallenging at times as we were without arecognised goalkeeper, but Callum Fewell – ournormal centre-half – has stood in and beentremendous keeping two clean sheets."Nick Edgington’s also been brilliant whencalled upon - strength and experience ingetting us through games away at Westfieldwhen we were down to the bare bones, andagain last week at Roffey – it’s these sorts ofgames that end up making the difference."He added: “We’ve kept the same spine to theside for a while now, and they all work hard foreach other – experienced players at this levellike Matt Docherty and Bradley Miles, who hasbeen phenomenal for us this season with his(17) goals from midfield.”Leading scorer, Marco Giambelardini has beenamongst the headlines in hitting the net 32
times from 29 starts, however the side haveimpressed in sharing the goals about, with justtwo more needed to bring up the century inthe ‘for’ coloumn. So often with grassroots clubs, the managerwears many hats, and Probee is no different –also taking the mantle of groundsman inpreparing the excellent Walton Lane pitch –and is once again up for the Sussex FAGroundsman of the Year award (Step 7) – anhonour which has bestowed Probee for the lastthree years.Bar for spells managing Sidlesham andChichester City’s reserves, Bosham has been areal labour of love for the 37-year-old, havingstarted as a youth player himself in the lateeighties, managed by father Bob – now theclub President; with late grand father, Dennis, the former club Vice President.Winning the title would be bitter-sweet for thevillage side, as they are unable to meet Step 6ground grading requirements, somethingProbee is philosophical about:“We know we can’t go up without lights and astand, which is a shame, but we’ve got a greatbunch here and a great little set-up. We’veseen the likes of Kieran Hartley (now atChichester City) come through, and we’llcontinue to develop players and do things theright way – the lads deserve this (League title)for their hard work on the pitch as much as thecommittee do for their efforts off it.”Those efforts include a recent grant for £1,500from West Sussex County Council’s ‘CommunityInitiative Fund’ to provide storage for theirride-on mower, in addition to renewing theirFA Charter Standard status for a thirdsuccessive year.Meanwhile, the outlook’s bright for RickKennett's u16’s, who just need a victory athome to struggling Barnham Trojans Red onApril 23 (10.30am) to lift the Arun & ChichesterYouth League ‘C’ Division title. Promisingstarlets Tommy Veness and Harry Spicer havealready been involved in Frank Antony’sreserves – who won their first Wyvern game onSaturday - alongside u18’s top goal scorer,Harry Lidster. The club also host their inaugural six-a-sidetournament over the summer, for age groupsbetween u7-u15, and are inviting entries forthe competition (£25 per team), which takesplace on July 22-23 at Chichester High Schoolfor Boys playing fields.
