FALL/WINTER 2018 VOL. 10 MAIN SHEET Cmode’s Cments Hello friends –we bid farewell to the 2018 season, all the races are over and (most if not quite) all of the boats and lifts and docks are out. If you’ve already flown south for the winter, you missed the first snowfall of the season; Fred was excited to get out there and play and put together the year’s first snowman. Following the theme from my last missive, one of the ways we are nice to each other is by pitching in. To whit: Everyone that volunteered over the last year, in / around the club or out on the water. ose who stepped up and chaired an event, and particularly the 2018 regatta chairs; LBYC’s financial stability is highly dependent on revenue from those events (more on that later) and they can’t happen without someone taking the lead. As to the offseason: Greg omas and his merry band of helpers did a great job getting everything buttoned up at Work Day! Mary Schmitendorf on the adult side, and Brooke and Molly Brickler at the kid/family party, have some really cool new stuff planned in bringing holiday cheer to the LBYC – please head to the website and register and join in the fun! Lots of people do lots of work to make it all happen –schedules and yearbook and membership and registration – so we’ll be ready to go next spring. One of the ways we can be nice is in giving thanks – my hat it tipped, to all of you. ank you! Now for the ‘more... later’ part. I’ve heard said over the decades, more times than I can count, something to the effect of “all this club cares about is money.” Sometimes the context is dues and fees, sometimes regattas and sailing, sometimes social events. You’ve likely heard it. Heck, you might have even said it. You know what? One of the ways we can be nice is to recognize that the LBYC is about money. Certainly not ALL about money, since our founding documents don’t refer to money at all, but rather speak to the mission of supporting sailing. All the same, nothing is free. Uncle Sam and the WDR each take their slices right off the top of every dollar that comes into the coffers. East Troy sends us a bill every year for the building and the land upon which it sits. It’s all insured and maintained, and there’s a long list of expenses involved in keeping things running. On the revenue side, there’s a short list of sources: Dues, fees, food and drink. Beyond that, the LBYC has the huge advantage of paying for almost none of the labor required. As a volunteer club we all pitch in, evidence above. Boil it all down and the margins are thin. us we create a budget that puts it all in balance, and that definitely requires that we care about the money. If you have questions or suggestions or concerns about the ins and outs, by all means let us know! Please remember, we’re all in this together, let’s be nice. FALL/WINTER 2018 VOL. 10MAIN SHEETCommodore’s CommentsHello friends –we bid farewell to the 2018 season, all the races are over and (most if not quite) all of the boats and lifts and docks are out. If you’ve already flown south for the winter, you missed the first snowfall of the season; Fred was excited to get out there and play and put together the year’s first snowman.

Following the theme from my last missive, one of the ways we are nice to each other is by pitching in. To whit:

• Everyone that volunteered over the last year, in / around the club or out on the water.

• Those who stepped up and chaired an event, and particularly the

2018 regatta chairs; LBYC’s financial stability is highly dependent on revenue from those events (more on that later) and they can’t happen without someone taking the lead.

• As to the offseason:

• Greg Thomas and his merry band of helpers did a great job getting everything buttoned up at Work Day!

• Mary Schmitendorf on the adult side, and Brooke and Molly Brickler at the kid/family party, have some really cool new stuff planned in bringing holiday cheer to the LBYC – please head to the website and register and join in the fun!

• Lots of people do lots of work to make it all happen –schedules and yearbook and membership and registration – so we’ll be ready to go next spring.

One of the ways we can be nice is in giving thanks – my hat it tipped, to all of you. Thank you!

Thus we create a budget that puts it all in balance, and that definitely requires that we care about the money.

If you have questions or suggestions or concerns about the ins and outs, by all means let us know! Please remember, we’re all in this together, let’s be nice.

What’s Happening at the LBYCSat. 12-8 Christmas Party 6:00pSun. 12-9 Kids Holiday Lunch

From the Sailing CommodoreLake Beulah was greeted this week with an early snow fall but that does not mean our sailors are done sailing for the year. Al Haeger and Chris Kubicek have headed south for the Southeast Regional- triple crown event #1.

Congratulations to John Porter and Al Haeger who were awarded the William Hunt Trophy for their contribution to the ILYA Fair Sailing initiative. This is truly a well-deserved honor for both and a reminder of how well the LBYC is represented by its members in the ILYA.

I have been working on the sailing calendar, signal boat and PRO schedules and my goal is to have them done before Thanksgiving. If you know of any weekends or dates you are not available, please feel free to forward those to me to avoid having to trade weekends with someone. The LBYC board has approved the purchase of a new defibrillator, and

I am working with my wife Dawn to set up a day for CPR and defibrillator training in spring.

We have another busy sailing season ahead of us as we will host the C Boat MIR regatta, MC Wisconsin Championship regatta, the Dorn Memorial regatta, Lauderdale Exchange and the Nan Norris Beulah Challenge. The LBYC has also been awarded the 2020 ILYA Optimist Championship regatta. Thank you Dave Berg and Candace Porter for completing the application.

I would like to thank everyone for their support this fall and the many suggestions I have received for the club. Have a good holiday season and think spring!

Beulah ladies, Erin Sullivan and Caroline Sko representing WISCO in Chicago!

Socially SpeakingSummer wound up with two great regattas; The George Dorn and the NNN Challenge. The chairs of those committees, Mitzy Dorn and Kathy Will and Beth Kutschenreuter, exuded the spirit of volunteerism. Both events were successful in that participants enjoyed good sailing, camaraderie and delicious food.

Beth’s food was outstanding but what so many people took away from the regatta was her ‘green’ theme. There was food composting, recycling, and the best part for me was NO styrofoam plates, cups. etc. The net result after a weekend regatta was only three garbage bags in the dumpster. An exemplary example of a good steward of our planet. During the winter months I’ll be exploring ways to incorporate a more ‘green’ LBYC, Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thank you to everyone who sent me input regarding next year’s social assignments. As our club membership ages, the task of creating these duties becomes a bit challenging. Some time before Thanksgiving, these assignments will be sent out to the chairs of the committees, then after their approval, the membership. If you are unable to fulfill the date allotted, please plan ahead and swap with another member.

Do you hear what I hear? There are two fantastic Christmas events planned at the club this year. The Schmitendorfs have an event planned with dancing - what a treat! Will Pat and Greg Thomas continue to hold the ‘most time spent on the dance floor’ title or will the Mackeys waltz into the lead? The children’s Christmas luncheon, planned by the Brickler families, is a not to be missed event for families, What’s Christmas without the joy of those precious faces and their cherry cheeks? The earlier reservations are in, the easier the planning is on the committees.

As the holidays approach, I wish you all peace in the upcoming year.

Keep kind in mind,

Julie Haeger

Ultimate calm... beautiful, unless you want to go sailing.

House & Grounds Report by: Greg Thomas

Work Day

The weather co-operated providing a beautiful fall day for working and eating donuts on Saturday, October 13. This energized the many dedicated volunteers who readied the building for the winter not only providing a great work day but a great social event , one of the last all together events of the year. The club will be ready for the annual up-coming Christmas parties.

Tennis Courts

For a number of years now, the Northeast corner of the tennis courts has been roped off to prevent access to the playing surface because the clay surface is too soft (wet). The area suffers from poor water drainage caused by an accumulation of the clay surfacing along the perimeter acting as a dam to proper drainage of surface water. The dam build-up of clay is predominately along the entire fenced East edge of the courts and occurs on both sides of the fence. It is caused by regular use of the courts and weather conditions over time.

Dennis Smalley has accomplished some drainage remedial repairs at the Northeast corner reducing the amount of clay dam buildup along the fence line. Dennis has also contacted the playing surface maintenance company, Court & Sport, Inc., for additional work next spring.

Court & Sport has stated that the courts need to be rolled with a heavier piece of equipment to prevent the sub-base gravel from rising to the playing surface. They have a reconditioned machine they will offer to the club for free demonstration use next spring.

Other On-going Work

Conditioned Air Design - Air Handling Units preventative maintenance with cooling coil cleaning . October 1 - No preventative maintenance required after inspection and test.

Trester Hoist & Equipment - The crane hoist and traveling bracket were removed on November 1 for preventative maintenance and Storage for the Winter. The hoist and traveling bracket are dismantled, inspected, cleaned, lubricated, painted as required and load tested.

Fleming 1 – Range Exhaust Hood Maintenance occurred on October 26. The Fall inspection and preventative maintenance concentrates on cleaning the nozzles of the exhaust hoods fire extinguishing system and maintenance of the fire extinguishing chemical tank.

Budget

After the sailing season and fall preventative maintenance schedules it is time to begin looking forward to next year. As the Yacht Club building approaches its twentieth anniversary, original equipment may need to be replaced as they approach their serviceable life. The budget process begins in November and proceeds through the early winter months of 2019. The Board of Directors have asked for a prioritized list of possible projects with associate costs.
