It is so crazy and exciting to think another year has come and gone. Wealiterally seen it all this year. We started 2013 in the midst of one of the worst droughts in state histor years of above-average temperatures and below-average rainfall had of hurt. Then came the spring rains, and our lakes, ponds and rivers fistate actually turned lush and green again. Thankfully that three-year dscreeching halt for most of Oklahoma. The added moisture, along with temperatures well below average into the summer and fall. What a nicompared to the previous years, like 2010 - the hottest summer on recordweather season was one of the most catastrophic in state history, with destructive tornadoes tearing right through the heart of our state. May 2we all pray we will never see again. On to fall now: We had several showinter precipitation overtake the state. We wrap up 2013 with below-atemperatures and have had enough rain to place the year in the record b

wettest since the late 1890s. No one knows what the New Year has in store for us all here in the Sooexcited to watch it unfold. The weather is sure to keep us on our toes, andforecasting in 2014. May you stick to your resolutions, may our Sooners beat Texas and may Southwest Oklahoma. Have a safe and Happy New Year, everyone!

We are minutes from entering a new year, and we are allsitting around talking about our list of resolutions that we willundoubtedly break by spring break. I’m in the same boat, but for some reason I always jot down “Get in shape” on mylist. Every year. I am not one to exercise. As a matter of fact, exercise makes me break out in hives. Even just thinking aboutexercise makes me break out in hives. I haven’t legitimatelyexercised in several years due to a knee injury I endured eight years ago. As I get older, the injur y gets worse. Welcome toadulthood.

When my friend suggested I try a yoga class with her, Iscoffed. Balancing? Touching my toes? Twisting myself in apretzel-like position? No thank you. I hurt myself enough inmy home. But I relented, and I showed up on a Monday nightto attend a level one class at Ashtanga Yoga Studio. I wantto say I felt super out of place and vowed to never go back, but I would be lying. It was one of the best workouts andexperiences I have ever had.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a practice that focuses on deepbreathing and structured yoga sequences. There are a fewreasons why this style is so great.

1. You are using deep breathing to heat your body, whichallows you to practice yoga safely without injuring yourmuscles.2. You go at your own pace and you work around anyphysical ailments you might have, so no one is left behind.3. If you are consistent in this practice, you can quickly feeland see the changes in your body and mind, making youwant to keep coming back.

Let’s take myself, for example. I am a young female; I am nota size zero, and I am very tall and have very long legs. I alsohave chronic knee problems. For this reason, my hamstringsare too tight, I cannot physically straighten my knees and Icannot touch my toes. I was worried that I wouldn’t be ableto keep up in class.

When I go to class, I try to follow my teacher’s instructionto the best of my ability. There are some poses I cannot dobecause I cannot put pressure on my knees. My instructorunderstands and shows me a different sequence so I cancontinue with the practice and get as much out of it as anyother person. There are also poses I caught onto very quickly, and once again my instructor showed me the next level so Icould work on expanding my practice.

Two months later, I am just two inches from touching my toes,my hamstrings are very slowly stretching out and I can feel adrastic difference in the muscles all along my legs and lowerback. I don’t dread going to this class. In fact, I look forwardto it, which is something I haven’t experienced when it comesto physical exercise. On top of all the great physical changesin my body, I feel less wound-up and more in tune with mybody than I was before I started.

All of the instructors are very helpful at Ashtanga, and theywill go out of their way to help your practice get better withevery session. If you’ve done yoga before, they have levelstwo through four as well, along with meditation classes,Mysore and Hot Vinyasa Flow, where you practice yoga in a90-degree classroom. Consider this a New Year’s resolutionfor you, to experience a new form of exercise and get in touchwith your mind, body and soul.

I’ve been thinking, which is never a good idea. But I’ve been thinking nonetheless. What are yourNew Year’s resolutions? Are they to eat better orto exercise more? Is it to wake up early every dayand do something productive? Is it to find a newhobby? What is your most important New Year’sresolution?

I know we all say we want to eat healthier andexercise more, yadda yadda. I can’t tell you howmany times I’ve said that. But since I’ve star ted yoga in September, I really have no need to makeit a New Year’s resolution to exercise. As for eatinghealthier? Well … I run a food blog, so that’s notgoing to happen.

So then I thought, Why don’t I try new things?  Ican accomplish so much if I just try new things!Like working with yeast, trying new bakingmethods, trying new recipes and maybe tastingnew cuisines.

My biggest challenge in the kitchen is workingwith chocolate. I’ve had too many bad e xperienceswith horrible, tasteless chocolate cakes and nastychocolate buttercreams. I have a tendency to stayaway from anything claiming to be “chocolate”because it’s usually disgusting.

So with that, I wanted to tr y my hand at makinga fudge buttercream. I was quite impressed, as itturned out to be one of the best chocolate frostingsI’ve ever had! You can layer this buttercream ontop of a chocolate cake, a vanilla cake, a devil’sfood cake or cupcakes – you name it!

Here are some tips to help you achieve a perfectbuttercream:

• Sift your powdered sugar. It will remove alllumps from your frosting and you won’t bite intochunks of powdered sugar.• Cream your butter at room temperature. Set out your butter an hour before you need to make thefrosting. It helps things mix more smoothly. Trustme!

• Make enough to cover what you made. Youdon’t know how many times I’ve had to makea second batch because I didn’t have enoughfrosting in the first round.

Sift the powdered sugar andcocoa powder in a small bowl.

Make sure there are no lumpsbefore continuing. Beat in thebutter and cream until smoothfrosting forms. Add in vanilla.

>> I used this frosting on aChocolate Buttermilk Cake. Checkout my blog for the recipe!

As the Sooners head into their matchup in Stillwater to take on the Oklahoma StateCowboys in the annual Bedlam Game, the possibilities are still up in the air for the Sooners’bowl trip.

One thing I think we can rest easy about is the fact the Sooners will not be playing in theBCS Fiesta Bowl and representing the Big 12. That is probably a good thing. It seemsthat the Big 12 winner will get a matchup that will not entice anyone in the country. It wasprojected that the Fresno State Bulldogs could land in the Fiesta Bowl, and that would besimilar to the Sooners playing Boise State. If you win, you were supp osed to; if you lose, itmakes you look bad. So, it’s a no-win situation for the Big 12 winner. Yes, the money is a

good thing, but would Sooner fans want another trip to the desert? The Cotton Bowl is still a place the Sooners could land, and people are talking about thepossibility of the LSU Tigers being matched up with the Big 12 at Jerry’s World in Dallas. The Sooners against the Tigers would be very interesting: the battle of coaches Bob Stoopsand Les Miles, the two styles of play, the Big 12 against the SEC a nd the meeting of the fansagain. Most Sooner fans that attended the National Championship game in New Orleansdid not enjoy being around the LSU fans.

The bowl that seems to be most likely for the Sooners would be the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas. This game would pit the Soonersagainst the PAC-12. This brings a few different teams as possible opponents for the Sooners. According to a few sources, the Soonerscould be playing in the Alamo Bowl against the Oregon Ducks or the USC Trojans. Most Sooner fans enjoyed the series with the Ducks, all except the PAC-12 screw-up job in Eugene, and the other side has the Sooners against a team they have not had ver y much successagainst as a program. The Sooners are 6-1 against the Oregon Ducks, including a win in the 2005 Holiday Bowl. Now, when it comes tothe men of Troy, it hasn’t been so great for the Sooners. The Sooners are 2-6-1 against USC, with the last matchup in the Orange Bowl forthe BCS National Title when the Trojans blasted Oklahoma 55-19.

USC and Oregon both pose different problems for the Sooners, but I don’t know whom I’d rather see the Sooners play. It would be thefirst time the Sooners would play in the Alamo Bowl, and that makes the matchup even more interesting.

The other possibility is that the Sooners would fall to the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in Arizona. It was known as the Insight Bowl previously, and the Sooners have a victory in that over the Iowa Hawkeyes. One projection even has the Sooners playing Minnesota. Still, I feel it willbe the Alamo Bowl for OU. Time will only tell!

The Norman Tigers football season started with a big performance bythe team defense. The Tigers hassled, pressured and sacked Alabamarecruit David Cornwell to the tune of nine sacks and also had a pick-sixon the night with a big momentum swing in the game.

The Tigers have had a great tradition of defensive players in the storiedprogram’s history. Just bring up the name Tyrell Peters around Norman, and people will tell you that Peters was a man among boys that led theTigers to a state title in 1992.

Under head coach Greg Nation, the Tigers have had talent on thedefensive side of the ball from Jamie Meyers to line backer GreggOffenburger, but Cade Parker has something none of them will ever be

able to take away.Cade Parker and his record-setting season started with five sacks onagainst his rival, Norman North. Everyone was talking about thetalented David Cornwell leading the North offense; many peoplequestioned how the could Tigers stop them. The Tigers responded byspending the entire game in the Timberwolves’ backfield.

Cade Parker set a school record with 19 sacks on the year – that numberis crazy to think about considering the Tigers only played 10 games.Cade Parker was this year’s record-setting MVP.

As the football season began for the Norman NorthTimberwolves, the big question was: Who was going to stepup and take a leaders hip role for the young T-Wolves? Gonewere 32 seniors that helped lead the team to the state titlegame against the mighty Jenks Trojans.

There were a bunch of candidates to take the leadership roleas the reliable guy that makes plays. Big-time college footballrecruit David Cornwell was a strong candidate but injured hisknee early in the year and did not finish the season.

So the question remained: Who was the T-Wolves MVP? Forme that was an easy choice. It was Nick Basquine. Basquine

made plays all year and was the best receiver on the team.Basquine was one of the top pass catchers all year with 64catches for an 18.5-yard average and 13 touchdowns.

It was more than the catches, though. The timing of some ofthem gave Basquine the moniker of MVP for the T-Wolves.Nick continued to show how much he meant to the team latein the year, as he was playing offense and defense as well. Most of the time at corner back, he drew the opposition’s bestplayer and won most battles.
